2 Please stay current with Council Events at Meeting Minutes, August 4th, Roll of Officers Chaplain excused Grand Knight present Deputy Grand Knight TBD Chancellor present Recorder present Financial Secretary- present Treasurer present Lecturer present Advocate present Warden present Inside Guard present Outside Guard present Trustee 3 Year -present Trustee 2 Year present Trustee 1 Year excused Grand Knight s Report DGK Tim Mosholder: (1.) A visiting Knight, Joseph Burr, from North Platte, NE, who has moved to the area as a recent college grad, and who is thinking of transferring into our council, was introduced. (2.) Tim again announced that the Deputy Grand Knight position is open as Keith Lowry needs more time to balance work and family demands, but still plans on being active in our council. (3.) Tim opened the floor for nominations to fill the empty DGK position; Bernie Kuta nominated PGK Dan Lazzeri and his nomination was seconded. There were no other nominations. Our council will vote on this nomination or any other nomination at our September meeting. (4.) Recent K of C State Organizational Meeting was attended by Ed Belen, Keith Lowry, Tim Mosholder and Dave Stauber. (5.) Ed Belen got up and gave a summary of this meeting with two key points: (a.)our council needs to increase our bond coverage on our financial Secretary and perhaps the treasurer. (b.) Some councils give gift cards to different program managers to pay for different council events (food procurement and activities, etc.). This puts the onus on the council and not on the individual member who buys supplies for different events. For instance, knights who buy food or supplies for campouts would receive a council gif card for payment rather than using their own personal credit cards or checks. If we were to purchase these gift cards through the parish, St. Mark would get some money back. (6.) Bernie Kuta clarified that the financial secretary has the discretion to be in charge of starting a gift card program, not the treasurer. Ed mentioned that it is also important for a second council member be a witness for council purchases by the financial secretary.
3 -The minutes of preceding meeting were: Approved as published. Pennies for Heaven: collected Chaplain s Report (Fr. Frank): (none; Fr. Frank excused) Correspondence: none Notices of Application/Membership Director: (Chet Elder) (1.) Our; next First Degree hosted by our council will possibly be on September 1 st starting at 6:30 PM with a 6:00PM set-up. There are two possible candidates (Robert Gant) and Will Johnson, but neither candidate s proposers were in attendance. (2.) Chet proposed we accept the transfer of Brother Joseph Burr; his proposal was seconded and Joseph was accepted unanimously by those present. (3.) Chet passed around a list of members to those present, to help determine whether some of the members listed (and whom we haven t heard from or haven t paid dues), are known to be active or inactive. Chet will attempt to reach out to those knights identified and invite them back into the council. A brief discussion followed as to what constitutes an inactive member. Chet will send out an summarizing this plan to all council members. January is the month for our annual hoop shoot; he is also planning events for the youth during the Christmas holidays. Community: Ben Mottinger: No report this month. Council Director- Rusty Hogan- Our next pancake breakfast will be held on August 21st after the 8 AM Mass.
8 Bruce Allen gave a report regarding last month s pancake breakfast ($200 income; $240 expense but he restocked many items; about 40 folks attended. Standing Committee/Campout: Peter Hjelmstad: This year s campout July 28 th night -31 st at Lake Wolford, was very successful; he is looking for volunteers to research where to hold next year s campout. Lake Dillon is not available and the terms and incentives for stay at Wolford Reservoir are not as generous for next year. Pro-life: (Peter Hjelmstad): The Bishop s Respect Life Dinner will take place this fraternal year on October 17 th. Peter and his wife conducted a Rosary for Life at the campout which was well attended. This year s Gala: (John Park): If interested in serving on the committee for our next Gala/fundraiser in February, 2017, please contact John. Peach Sales: (Bruce Allen for JohnWhattam): sales close this weekend. Bruce reported that 9 sheets of orders are filled up. The Peaches will be delivered Friday, August 12 th with Aug. 13 th /14 th pick-up. Any peaches not picked up on those dates will be sent to Sedalia. Unfinished Business: none Old Business: Terry Sandrock: Terry reminded us of the Sunday, September 4 th - Hydrocephalus Walk at Redstone Park. Assistance is needed to serve and cook food at event; please Contact Terry Sandrock: (stsand1@comcast.net) to volunteer. New Business: Carlo Turchiano: Carlo attended the planning meeting last month and Ryan and Kayla Spor, who were missionaries in CA last year at different universities, will be fulfilling a 2 year missionary Commitment at the University of Mississippi. This young, married couple work for the FOCUS campus outreach program that pursues college students with intentionality and love, inviting them into a growing relationship with Jesus and the Catholic faith. FOCUS missionaries must raise money to fund their year-long trips. Carlo made a motion that our council makes a donation to Ryan and Kayla in the amount of $2,000. The motion was seconded and a brief discussion followed. The motion and vote was tabled until next month due to our bylaws restricting fund requests to $400, until discussed by the planning committee and officers. Bruce Allen mentioned that his wife (at one time) worked for FOCUS; that money donated to this organization is well spent with no overhead ; our council can well afford this donation request. Tim added that Knights can donate individually. PGK Rich Bowers: Rich and Cherise have a ministry of rescuing dogs. This year, they rescued 4 dogs of
9 which one died, and 3 are in very poor health. The vet who treats these dogs won t treat further until an outstanding bill of $7,500 is paid. Rich asked the council for $250 for help towards this bill; seconded by Ralph Anzur. Bruce Allen proposed we suspend our council bylaws temporarily for this request (due to the urgency of the dogs health)and he proposed a $500 donation; this was seconded by Kurt Haneke. A discussion followed along the lines of why we can propose suspension with this request and not the one helping FOCUS the missionaries. (Brought up by Robert Seydel). Bruce Allen s amendment to Rich s request was passed with one abstention. 4th Degree Report: (Dave Stauber): (1.) The Assembly s first meeting of the Fraternal year was on Sunday, July 24 th. (2.) Deacon Ed is planning to become a 4 th Degree Knight and join our assembly; Joseph Burr also plans to transfer. (3.) there are 2 opportunities to become a 4 th Degree Knight: September 18 th and October 22 nd (4.) Dave is looking for volunteers to join our assembly social committee; he proposes a periodic Corporate Mass, associated with a social event, such as lunch or dinner. He welcomes ideas or feedback. (5.) Our Assembly wants to recognize active military members and urges Knights to contact Rich Starr to post pictures and /or names of those serving our country. (6.) On November 20 th, there will be a Memorial Mass honoring our council members who have died. Dave requests 4 th Degree members wear social baldrics with tuxes or council shirts at this 10 AM Mass. Our next assembly meeting will be on Sunday, August 28 th at 7:00 PM at St. Mark. District Deputy Bernie Kuta: Bernie was given a standing ovation. (1.) He again mentioned importance of SET training for all members with annual recertification; we need to coordinate this, say, through the church director. (2.) He is hosting the District 9 meeting at St. Mark, this Saturday, August 6 th at 8:30 AM. Any Knights are welcome. (3.) The K of C State and Supreme organizations are urging all councils to take a more spiritual direction in all we do and Bernie specifically mentioned our Knights of Christ prayer book as one means of focusing on our spirituality. Building the domestic church is the phrase used by Supreme. (4.) Bernie stated he is here to help us; our State organization encourages us to do more recruiting. (5.) Bernie will invite other council officers to attend our meetings and he greatly appreciates our support!
