Grand Knight Larry Ruff hopes to have at least one person from the Ladies Auxiliary to Co-Chair this event, as well. Anyone interested can contact Larry Ruff to volunteer. Membership Drive Challenge Wouldn t that be wonderful if each and every Council Officer could recruit one new member in the current fraternal year? It may sound a little far reaching, but does challenge each and every Officer to get out and recruit at our upcoming membership drives. The Supreme incentive provides points to the council if they can achieve that lofty goal. The points allow us to purchase items from the Knights catalog to be used by the Council. Grand Knight Larry Ruff asked each and every Officer to help out with the membership drive and to think of someone they might know who might be a prospect. He asked them to come up with a name or names of prospects. Membership grows the council and our charitable works, so Officers and Brothers do look around for a prospect and consider helping out at our membership drives. Thank You Letters and Other Correspondence The Grand Knight acknowledged a thank you letter from GiGi s Playhouse for our ID Drive donation. GiGi s Playhouses are Down syndrome awareness and educational centers that provide resources, specialized teaching and support to individuals with Down syndrome, their families and community. Brothers Recognized and Certificates Presented Grand Knight Larry Ruff acknowledged Brother Ken Valenti who recently completed his 2 nd and 3 rd degrees. He also presented Treasure Rick Deyhle with the Knight of the Month Award. Congratulations to Ken on his degrees and Rick for his many years of handling the Council s treasury and banking!

Page 3 of 11 Ken Valenti, 2 nd /3 rd degrees Knight of the Month Rick Deyhle Grand Knight Larry Ruff presented District Deputy Jim Killigrew with a certificate officially appointing him as District Deputy for District 3. Congratulations to Jim on his appointment! Jim Killigrew, District Deputy Treasurer s Report Treasurer Rick Deyhle reported a checking account balance of $8, He stated liabilities of $4,368.71, leaving an overall balance of $3, He also read a number of vouchers for presentation to the Trustees for payment. A motion was made, seconded and voted on by the members. The members passed the motion unanimously and the bills were presented to the Trustees. Deputy Grand Knight s Report ID Drive Advocate Bernie Bojarski talked about dedicating this drive in honor of Bob Brown and about how Bob Brown worked tirelessly year-after-year on the ID Drive, which is the Intellectual Disabilities Drive or more popularly known as the Tootsie Roll drive. Bernie mentioned that ALL of the donations we collect go to help our local community, such as GiGi s Playhouse, other than the cost of the Tootsie Rolls. This year the drive was held on Friday, September 20 & Saturday, September 21. We had another successful drive this year. After some early Friday morning moisture and cloudiness, we were blessed with

Page 4 of 11 great weather for the drive. Bernie recently reported initial results of the drive. So far, we have collected over $20,000! The ID Drive Co-Chairmen and Council Officers wish to say thank you to all who volunteered to help make this a successful drive! Our Worthy District Deputy in Tootsie Roll Regalia Pancake Breakfast PGK George Tibus mentioned that he will send around a sign-up sheet next month for Pancake Breakfast volunteers. He asked for volunteers and encouraged members to come out for the breakfast, which will be held on November 3, 2013 at St. Thomas. Ultrasound Initiative Trustee Deacon John Breit provided an update on the ultrasound initiative to the Council from both parishes. Father Tim at St. Theresa has taken a pass on this initiative this fall since he is just learning about the parish and all of its needs. He agreed to take a look at it again in the spring. He also met with Father Tom and Ron Schaefer, parish manager, at St. Thomas to discuss doing the drive in October, which is right-to-life month. Father Tom agreed to do the drive and hold it the weekend of October 5 and 6. John will speak at all of the masses that weekend about the drive in conjunction with the Council s membership drive. Father Tom declared that weekend as Knights of Columbus Weekend. With the ultrasound initiative that weekend, we will also be recruiting members, selling Halloween candy (Tootsie Rolls) and Christmas wreaths. John is asking for volunteers to help with this drive. Please contact Deacon John Breit to volunteer to help out with this worthy cause.

Page 5 of 11 Right to Life Bill Nicholson reported a number of upcoming dates and activities of right to life as follows: On Friday, October 4 and Saturday, October 5 there will be a Eucharistic Adoration at St. Theresa. Respect Life Fair and Spiritual Adoration at St. Theresa on October 5 and 6. Bill asked for volunteers to help staff the table after mass, especially the Kairos prison table. St. Thomas is hosting a movie night on Friday, October 11 at 7pm showing Sarah s Choice. On Saturday, October 12 at 12 noon at St. Joseph home praying the rosary on the grounds. Forty days for life will be from September 25 to November 3 where you pray, fast, and stand in front of a center doing abortions. There will be a retreat at Maryville the weekend of October 18 to 20. Vocations Update Church Director Steve Amidei relayed a personal story about three parishes in Wisconsin where he recently visited the Castle Rock area as part of a family reunion. He mentioned how blessed we are in our hometown parishes to have more than one priest at each parish. Near Castle Rock, he discovered that one young priest covered three parishes in that area traveling from parish-to-parish. With a declining number of priests it is important that we support our seminarians. He pointed out that these young men are serving an important role and do need our support. Finally, please note that the drawing date for this year s raffle will be December 7, All Brothers should turn in their raffle books at the November 11 business meeting in order to be eligible for the drawing. You may turn in your raffle tickets and donations to either Steve Amidei or Tom Nicholas. Website Development Advocate Bernie Bojarski reported that Tom Nicholas and he are moving along with the website development. Bernie has a home page established and will be adding to it over the next several months. Kairos Prison Ministry Outside Guard Bruce Alesi thanked everyone for making cookies for the retreat weekend of September 26 th to 29 th at Pontiac Correctional Center. Please keep the Pontiac residents in your prayers and do pray for a successful weekend. Newman Fund Chancellor Jim Arns, Jr. reported that the SIU Newman Center is celebrating their 50 year anniversary. They are having a gala to celebrate this significant anniversary and to raise funds for the center. If you are interested in donating funds to the SIU Newman fund to support this important fund raiser please send a check to payable to Holy Ghost Council 4977 to Jim Arns, Jr. Holy Ghost will write one check and send it on to SIU Newman Center. Please be generous. Christmas Wreaths Chancellor Jim Arns, Jr. let us know that wreaths will be distributed the weekend after Thanksgiving. Announcements will be going out soon in both parishes bulletins. He is looking for Brothers at St. Thomas for help in distributing the wreaths to St. Thomas parishioners. He needs volunteer help with wreath deliveries sometime in late November. Contact Jim Arns, Jr. to volunteer your help.

Page 6 of 11 4th Degree Patriots of the Trinity President, Jim Ciciora reported that there were eight Knights in regalia on Saturday, September 7 th at the 5pm mass with Cardinal George at St. Thomas to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the school. Jim congratulated recent 4 th degree Brother Rick Deyhle on joining the honor guard for the first time. Congratulations to Rick! Honor Guard for Cardinal George. Anyone you know? Jim also mentioned that he is still organizing and establishing lists of the 4 th degree members with regalia and their contact information. There were twenty honor (20) guards in attendance on Sunday, September 22 nd at 11:30am mass at St. Theresa with Bishop Rassas for the installation of Father Tim. Brothers, what a great way to support our new pastor at St. Theresa! Thank you to all of those who participated in the honor guard! Deputy Grand Knight, Jack McCarthy reported that there will be a 4 th Degree exemplification held on October 19, 2013 in Rockford. Please contact Jack McCarthy if you are interested in attending this upcoming 4 th Degree exemplification. Ladies Auxiliary There was no report this meeting. Council Directory Trustee John Breit said that the Council Directory will be available for either the October or November business meeting. He thanked Recorder Tom Nicholas s wife, Erin, for all of her help in putting the directory together and Bob Smith for paying the cost of printing. Thank you Erin and Bob for your contributions! Unfinished Business There was no report this meeting. New Business There was no report this meeting. Field Agent s Report Field Agent, Dave Peterson explained the Knights of Columbus insurance program and other benefits offered. He noted that the Knights started out in March 29, 1882 with no life insurance in force, seventy-nine years later in June 1961, the Knights had $1 billion in insurance, then hit $40 billion in the year 2000, and by

Page 7 of the Knights had $90 billion of life insurance in force. The Knights are the strongest and most secure organization in world and are AM Best A++ rated for over 38 yrs. Dave passed out statistics that show how many Knights policies paid out and cause of death. The point of the message is that you should not wait or procrastinate. Go out and make sure you have sufficient life insurance. For retirement, keep in mind that the Knights offer annuities, IRA s and Roth IRA s. The Knights also offer disability insurance, long-term care insurance, whole life insurance and term life insurance products. Please give Dave Peterson a call and let him do a review and make sure you are covered. District Deputy Report District Deputy, Jim Killigrew mentioned an upcoming district meeting to be held where councils can share information and coordinate 1 st degrees. He stressed how we want to hold degrees for candidates, and not hold candidates for degrees. He presented our Council s five charity goals for the fraternal year. Holy Ghost s goals are: 1. ID Drive $32, Newman Fund $1, Pro life $ Vocations $ General Assistance Fund $ Former Supreme Secretary There was no report this meeting. Chaplain s Report Our Assistant Chaplain, John Breit, discussed the importance of marriage. He emphasized the need to focus on the fundamental parts of our lives, which are family, marriage, husband, wife and children. He mentioned a story Cardinal George relayed last weekend about how well the Cardinal s mother knew the likes and dislikes of his father as they shopped. The point of the story was how well his parents knew each other and that the intimacy of their relationship brought to their marriage is something you can t just tear apart. In the September Columbia magazine, Supreme Chaplain Archbishop Lori talks about family values and how important marriage is. The below summary of this article read by John: In promoting the traditional definition of marriage, the Catholic Church is not against anyone and don t let anyone convince you otherwise. We are for marriage; we are for children; we are for families, and we are for preserving our God-given and constitutionally guaranteed religious liberty. An increasing number of people see the redefinition of marriage simply as a matter of equality. If two people of the same sex love each other enough to commit to each other, so the reasoning goes, why shouldn t they be allowed to marry and enjoy the benefits accorded to all married couples? Yet for thousands of years, people of diverse cultures and religions have regarded marriage as a complementary relationship of love between one man and one woman, pledged to permanence, fidelity and openness to the gift of new life. It is an all-encompassing relationship so complete that, by its very nature, it is capable of bringing forth children into the world and establishing homes where they can flourish. Marriage is now increasingly understood as a legally sanctioned emotional bond between any two consenting adults. We can readily see that this idea of marriage jettisons what is in fact unique to marriage: the one-flesh union of a man and woman open to new life and ordered toward permanence, fidelity and stable family life. Once marriage has been loosened from its conjugal moorings, it is on the path to extinction.

Page 8 of 11 In the face of these challenges, we must seek to recover, know, and share the beauty and truth of the Church s prophetic teaching, which is central to the new evangelization. It is necessary that programs of catechesis aimed at youth, families, those preparing for marriage or those already married be transformed by the Holy Spirit and allow people to encounter Jesus Christ, in whose light we see light and in whose love we find love. Pray, teach, witness live the vocation of marriage and family joyfully and robustly! This is what will open minds and hearts, defending marriage and religious liberty for the salvation of souls and the good of our society. Supreme Chaplain Archbishop Lori. As you pray, John encourages the Council to think about what Archbishop Lori, Cardinal George and Pope Francis continue to say about the sanctity of marriage and family. Food Pantry and Little Sisters of the Poor Grand Knight Larry Ruff reported that we raised $107 for the St. Thomas Food Pantry and $86 for the Little Sisters of the Poor this evening. As announced in June, we will temporarily use the 2 nd collection, normally for the disaster fund, to support the Little Sisters of the Poor. Another great example of our Council s continuing support of the needy brothers and sisters of our community. Trustee s Report Trustee John Breit reported that the Trustees reviewed the vouchers, approved and signed them, and has forwarded them on to the Treasurer for payment. Prayer Intensions Please remember to keep the following in your prayer: Ron Sowizrol, Roberta Sowizrol, Bob Heimlich, Bob Shonta, Paul Pasko, Master Paul Isherwood, Renee Foos, Barbara Simeo, Bruce Alesi s mother-in-law, Lorraine Busch, Joe Arns, and the unborn children. Let us remember Brother Vince Iuorio, and Tom Gross, Brother Tom Mullen s father-in-law, who both recently passed away. Please keep them and their families in your prayer.
