Please pay your dues. We are still holding meetings at the hall and at the regular times. Please plan to attend our meetings. They remain the same as always. Officers and Directors Meeting is the first Monday of every month at 7:30 PM. The Business Meeting is the second Monday of the month at 7:30 PM. And the BDBA Meeting is the second Tuesday at 7:30 PM. At the Business Meeting on March 10th we will auction off the Char-Broil Combo Charcoal/Gas Grill. You must be present to bid and/or win. The Tootsie Roll Drive made $ As you know, this money is given to the Diocese Deaf Ministry. Just so everyone is aware, BDBA has put the hall and grounds up for sale. Remember, Council 2813 is alive and well. Please pay your dues, attend the meetings, and help plan future events. I want you all to have a voice in what happens to the hall.

4 Community Brad Pierce I m very excited to announce that the St. Francis Village Parish has accepted sponsorship of our Presbyterian Night Shelter Sandwich Making Nights, and will fund and host them from now on, as of Tuesday, Feb 25, A big thank you to Jack Kearney for coordinating this, and a huge thank you to St. Francis Village Parish!! Presbyterian Night Shelter Sandwich Making Nights will continue to be on the fourth Tuesday of the month at St. Francis Village, at 7:00PM. Tell the guards at the security gate you're there for the Knights of Columbus Sandwich Night for entry. When you see the big pond on the left, the building immediately on the right is the place to find us. If you start seeing homes, you've gone too far. Hope to see everyone there to come by and meet a few new familiar faces! You might see some deer, too. Church Robert Myers The monthly Knights of Columbus Mass will be celebrated at Saint Bartholomew Catholic Church, 3601 Altamesa Blvd, Fort Worth, TX on Sunday, March 23rd, at 11:00 AM. We ask that all Brother Knights please sit together; seats will be reserved in the front of the church for Brother Knights and their families and please wear your Knights of Columbus name tag or shirt. Our next Pro-Life Mass for the Unborn will be on Monday, March 24th at Saint Francis Village. The rosary will start at 7:05 PM with the mass at 7:30 PM. Additionally, or next Corporate Communion on March 31st at St. Frances Village at 10:00 AM followed with breakfast at village. Sunshine Don Rejda Many of our Brothers and family members are in need of our daily prayers. Please notify me if you want me to remove or add someone s name to the bulletin's prayer list. Our Council has decided, if we don't hear from you after four months, I will start removing names and place them on our long term prayer list on the Council bulletin board at the hall. Call me at or me at kolaches1942@att.net. Also, notify me if you want me to send a Get Well or Sympathy Card to someone. Also, for our Brother Knights, their wives or their family members that have passed away, please notify me so a Gate Fold of Spiritual Union of Perpetual Adoration can be given to surviving family members. Get Well Cards were sent to our Chaplain Father Jim Pemberton and Brother Robert Huttmeyer. The power of prayer is strong indeed and we should wield that power often. Pro-Life Jack Kearney Russia signed a law banning abortion advertising. Some members of the Russian State Assembly are talking about going even further and banning the procedure itself. The Russian Orthodox Church, whose numbers are swelling with converts and reverts, is weighing in as well. One Orthodox prelate called abortion a mutiny against God. This is an amazing turnabout in a country which has long been known for its tragically high abortion rate. Until recently, the average woman in Russia could expect to have seven abortions over her lifetime. Even The New York Times, no bastion of Pro-Life sentiment, has been compelled to acknowledge that Russia's high abortion rate was damaging the health and fertility

6 of Russian women. As the paper noted in a 2003 editorial, "Now the Russian government is attempting to slow the abortion rate. It is an admirable goal, given the toll that multiple abortions have taken on the health and fertility of Russia's women. Not to mention the toll that abortion has taken on the unborn, and on the population as a whole. Abortion was forced on the Russian people by the Russian communist party under Lenin, who upon coming to power in 1920 legalized abortion up to birth without any restrictions. Their goal was to destroy the family by encouraging women to get abortions, get out of the home and into the workforce. Russia was the first country in the world to declare war on the unborn in this way. In fact, it was the early Bolsheviks (Communist) who developed the abortion suction machine. Isn t it time we caught up with the Russians morally? Health Line Duane Oefinger, PGK Muscle Cramps - Most of us have experienced muscle cramps during our life. They are painful and can be brief, intermittent, or last a long time. The muscles knot up and bulge in the extremity affected. They can cause soreness which can sometimes last for several days. They can occur at any time and become more common as you get older. Muscle cramps are caused by many things but generally occur when a muscle or group of muscles involuntarily contract forcefully, don t relax and is sustained. The muscle groups are stimulated by hyperexcitability of the nerves that stimulate the muscles. Cramps can be caused by many things. Vigorous use of certain muscle groups, especially during sports or unaccustomed activities can cause muscle fatigue and cramps. Performing activities for long periods of time or sitting/lying in awkward or uncomfortable positions can cause cramps. Not warming up your muscles or not doing stretching adequately can also cause muscle cramps. Many people experience muscle cramps at night. The cause of these muscle cramps is not known but is often caused by pointing the toes down while lying in bed, causing the muscles in the calves to shorten. Dehydration can also cause muscle cramps - activities that cause a lot of fluid loss through sweating causes the loss of electrolytes such as sodium, magnesium, calcium and potassium. Sodium is the primary electrolyte lost due to dehydration. This is especially true during warm weather. A lack of adequate fluid replacement exacerbates the problem. Medications can also the loss of important electrolytes. Many people, especially the older population, take diuretics to control high blood pressure and don t drink the amount of fluids necessary to replace electrolytes. They are often placed on potassium supplements to help replace they potassium lost but the people don t do this consistently and thus experience muscle cramps. Certain medical conditions such as diarrhea, vomiting, inadequate diet, poor blood circulation, kidney disease, pregnancy, and Vitamin D deficiency lead to electrolyte deficiencies. If you don t monitor your lab values, and are taking dietary supplements you can cause medical problems to yourself, especially if you have any kidney problems. What can you do to treat muscle cramps? Stretching the muscles when you develop the cramp will usually stop the muscle cramp. Often you can accomplish this by standing up and

7 walking around. If you are near a wall, you can stand about 2.5 feet from the wall and lean forward while placing your forearms on the wall while keeping your back and back straight while keeping your feet flat on the ground. A gentle massage, use of a heating pad, warm/hot soak, gentle massage, or pulling the toes toward the head while lying down will help with muscle cramps. Adequate fluid intake before, during and after vigorous activities will also be beneficial. If drinking sports drinks for replacement fluids, check the sugar content because many of them have higher levels of glucose. Some medications used to treat muscle cramps include Paracetamol or motrin, quinine and mineral supplements, flexeril, norflex, Vitamin E and baclofen. Quinine has been a drug used for many years to treat and prevent abdominal cramps but is harder to find today. It decreases the excitability of the muscles. Recent studies have shown that it has caused birth defects, decrease in platelets, nausea, vomiting, headaches and deafness. Quinine can be found in tonic water and you can drink a cup of quinine water at bedtime. Anecdotal notes also discuss drinking 4 ounces of pickle juice with some relief. In addition, 4 oz of club soda was also reported to be effective. It is important that you include your MD when deciding how to treat your muscle cramps. Lab work may need to be monitored and you need to ensure there is no drug interaction between your medication and any of the treatments you decide to pursue. Ladies Auxiliary Georgia Miller The Ladies Auxiliary hosted a "belated Valentine dinner" on February 19th. Thirty-five ladies and guests enjoyed a great evening of fellowship and dining. The Ladies will no longer be meeting on the second Tuesday of the month, and due to circumstances beyond our control. Please watch for an or telephone call regarding future meetings. The meeting place for the Ladies Auxiliary, scheduled for Thursday, March 13, has had to be changed. Due to unforeseen circumstances - WE WILL NOT MEET AT ST. BARTS. The meeting will be held at the Community Center on Alta Mesa & Welch Avenue (across from Southwest High School). The center closes at 8:00 p.m. so we will start at 6:30 PM. This is a very important meeting - please make every effort to attend. Thanks for your continued support of our auxiliary. P.S. As you come into the Center, we will be in the meeting room on the right (across from the Reception Desk).
