3 Grand Knight P. J. Carter (No Report This Month) Chaplain Fr. Francis Cosgrove Dear Brother Knights, I m just back from three wonderful weeks in Ireland. The average temperature was in the mid 70 s. I spent my time, as I usually do, with my sister, an Ursaline nun, my brother and his wife and their four grown children. One of the joys this year was baptizing my newest grand nephew. Two of my nieces and one of my nephews are married with children. My other nephew is studying to be a Jesuit priest. He is beginning his second of four years of theology in Toronto. I volunteered for one or two weekend Masses in the home church where I was baptized, made my First Communion, First Confession and Confirmation and where I celebrated my first Mass on June 13, I celebrated daily Mass with the family, usually in late morning. I ate too much, probably slept too much and tried to pray a little more. My sister and I walked frequently in the picturesque countryside in the beautiful temperature when it wasn t raining. It was a very enjoyable, simple and restful vacation with my family and, as usual, I come back energized. Thanks to my brother knights for your support and prayers. Fr. 4 Fourth Degree John Harwell, FN The month of August has been a quiet one for the Assembly. The 4th Degree did share ($75), along with Council 802 in the cost of a full page ad in the 2014 Meridian High Football program. I had a chance to see the actual ad this past Friday at the first home game and it looks very good. I am thankful that we are in a position to support our local high schools in this manner. Upcoming events for September will include the Honor Guard participating in the Silver Rose Program which will be held at St. Joseph Church at 4:30PM on Sunday, September 7th. PFN Tom Zettler PSD is coordinating the overall program for the Silver Rose and it promises to be a beautiful occasion. I encourage all of you to try to attend along with your families. I hope you all have a great month. John Harwell Faithful Navigator 1 COR Family Bob Leo My congratulations go out to Otto and Inez Storr, for being selected as our "Family of the Month" for July. Otto and Inez are long standing members of our council and our church. They are both readily available whenever someone is in need of help, as was the case of Brother Joe Gomez. Otto and Inez were there to tends to Joe's needs while he was in the hospital and throughout his stay in the assisted living center. Also, they periodically kept the council and Joe's brother Knights up to date on his progress. Again congratulations to Otto and his lovely wife Inez. If you know of some family that meets the requirements to be a "Family of the Month" which are: Has the family made contributions to the Church, community, and/or council.? Does the family enjoy one another's company? Does the family share experiences? Does the family communicate openly and honestly? Does the family pray and attend Mass together? Does the family spend time together interacting instead of in front of the television set? If you know of a family that meets these requirements, please bring their names to the council's first meeting of the month and enter their names to be nominated in the "Family of the Month" selection. There will not be a Family Theme night dinner in August due to the Labor Day picnic. Our next Family night dinner will be on September 26th, at 6:30 P.M. 5 Bingo Bob Leo I'm sitting here drawing a blank, about what to say to you, about our Bingo Program. I think I've said it all, in past newsletters. I've talked about how strong our bingo is as it compares to other bingo halls around the state. I've talked about how the attendance of our customers is progressing; I've thanked many of our members and ladies for their support and help in making our bingo program the success it has become; I've pleaded and begged our newest members to get active in the program and with some success, I have reached some. So what is left to say except thank you, thank you, thank you, for all that you have done, and all that you probably will do in the future. Obama has reportedly been inspired by Pope Francis' messages of inclusion and equality, though the two disagree on abortion and contraception. Obama offers new accommodations on birth control: By JOSH LEDERMAN of Associated Press Even so, the accommodations may not fully satisfy religious groups who oppose any system that makes them complicit in providing coverage they believe is immoral. Effective immediately, the U. S. will start allowing faith-affiliated charities, colleges and hospitals to notify the government rather than their insurers that they object to birth control on religious grounds. Then the government will instruct a nonprofit's insurer or third-party administrators to take on the responsibility of paying for the birth control, at no cost to the employer. In a related move, the administration announced plans to extend an existing accommodation to some for-profit corporations that is currently available only to nonprofits. That measure would be available for "closely held" corporations that are owned by families or a small number of investors, and would transfer responsibility for birth control coverage away from the employer, according to a fact sheet posted on a government web site. The dual decisions mark the Obama administration's latest effort to address a long-running conflict that has pitted the White House against churches and other religious groups, sparking dozens of legal challenges. The Supreme Court ruled in June that the government can't force companies like Hobby Lobby Inc. to pay for birth control. Days later, the high court sided with religious nonprofits such as Wheaton College, an evangelical school, which argued that the existing accommodation required them to sign a form that violated their beliefs. The latest proposals, which were expected to be formally released later Friday, will likely run up against the same objections, because they still enable employees to receive contraception at no extra charge through their health plans one of a range of preventive services required under President Barack Obama's health care law. "We will be studying the new rule with our clients, but if today's announcement is just a different way for the government to hijack the health plans of religious ministries, it is unlikely to end the litigation," said Mark Rienzi, senior counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which has represented both Hobby Lobby and Wheaton. 6 Youth David Klutz FUND RAISER KICKOFF On Monday, August 25th, St. Patrick School held an assembly to Kick Off their Yankee Candle Fund Raiser Event. If you are interested in ordering from them please contact a St. Patrick student or the school office. The school is looking for Volunteers. Please contact the office if you are available to stuff green folders on Tuesday mornings. Other volunteer opportunities include: Coke Rewards, Box Tops for Education, Campbell's Soup Labels, helping teachers with some tasks, and many more Parent School Association activities throughout the year. SAVE THIS DATE Grandparents will be invited to join their grandchildren for lunch on Friday, September 12th. I haven't gotten any news from our youth groups so if you hear something please let me know. Creative Contraption Contest will be September 26th. I still need items, so if you have 50 items please get them to me the first week of September. I will need volunteers to act as judges. Dave Klutz Youth Chairman Seminarians Corner Nick Adam Brother Knights, A new school year has begun, and so have my Theology studies! My first days at Notre Dame Seminary have been filled with blessings and fun. The faculty and staff have been welcoming and inspiring, as have the returning seminarians that have helped us assimilate to our new surroundings. Four Jackson seminarians are in their first year of Theology: Aaron Williams, Mark Shoffner, Adolfo Suarez, and myself. Along with these four we also have Jason Johnston, who is in his third year of Theology, Cesar Fermin, who is studying English, and Joseph Le, who has joined the diocese after more than ten years as a Carmelite brother. To have seven seminarians studying for our diocese in one place is wonderful, and we also have three seminarians still studying at St. Ben s in Covington, so thank you all for the prayers and support! Bishop Kopacz is leading an evening of reflection for the seminary after the first day of classes, so the diocese is well represented here in New Orleans!!! - Nick
