Our goal is to pass God s love for us forward with service to others and works of charity. But, we re just people. This past month I have witnessed several incidences where one of our members was not being respectful of a Brother Knight. This action takes respect away from all of us. What we do to one, we do to all. Let s take the time and effort to make all our fellow Brothers feel that they are important and needed members of our Council. The Monthly Bulletins Will Not Be Mailed The Council decided to stop mailing our monthly bulletins starting this month, October. The cost and time had gotten to be too much for us. From now on, we will the bulletin and post it on- line on our website: Click on Newsletters There will be a number of copies available at our hall. And, if someone has a special need, we will mail them a bulletin. In this case, we would ask for a $15 a year donation (if you can afford it) to cover mailing.

Community Brad Pierce Our next Presbyterian Night Shelter sandwich making night will be on October 23rd at 7:00 PM at the Hall (last about minutes). Everyone is welcome, so come on out and join in the fun. Tootsie Roll Drive: Need volunteers! So far we have more drop-outs than sign-ups. This is a very important fundraiser for our Council scheduled for 24 November. Sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board. Church John LaFleur The church activities for the month of October are the Pro-Life Mass for the Unborn on Monday, October 22nd, with the rosary starting at 7:05 PM followed by the Mass in the KC hall and the KC Mass at Saint Bartholomew Catholic Church on Sunday, October 28th, at 11:00 AM. Church activities are especially important in today s society with so many negative influences on our families, so attending church activities together as a family is truly a positive influence for all. Since there are many Catholic parishes represented in Council 2813, opportunities to add church activities at other parishes are welcome and at the same time all Council 2813 members and their families are welcomed and encouraged to attend the KC Mass at Saint Bartholomew Catholic Church. All Knights and Ladies Auxiliary members are highly encouraged to wear their name tags and Pro-Life wings to show our solidarity and presence at these activities with the power of suggestion possibly encouraging the recruitment of new members (imagine that!). Sunshine Don Rejda As I start my first article as Sunshine Chairman, I want to thank Woodie Hill for helping me get started and for all the outstanding work he has done writing this article for many years. I can't put into words my and our Council s appreciation of the many hours he spent, including bulk mailing the Council's Bulletins each month. Thank you Woodie!!! Many of our Brothers and family members are in need of our daily prayers. If you want me to remove or add someone s name to the bulletin's prayer list or send a Get Well or Sympathy Card, call me at or me at kolaches1942@att.net. Also, for our Brother Knights, their wives or their family members that have passed away, please notify me so a Gate Fold of Spiritual Union of Perpetual Adoration can be given to surviving family members. Brother Louis Paul Mix passed away last month. He was enrolled in the Spiritual Union of Perpetual Adoration and a gate fold will be giving to his daughter, Patty Mix. Get well cards were sent to Ann Kutach (her Son-in-Law, granddaughter and grandson were hit by a car), Pat Long (Wife of deceased Brother Ed Long) who was in the hospital for a heart problem and Ruth Phillips (Wife of Brother Gene Phillips). Many of our Brothers and family members are in need of our daily prayers. Remember to pray for those that are in most need of God s Blessing. Brother Paul Ayala Debbie Chalupa (Daughter of Brother Woodie Hill)

Brother John Freeman Brother Pete Gutierrez III Brother Woodie Hill Brother Don Haskins Rita Johnson (Wife of PGK Ric Johnson) Ruth Kemp (Wife of PGK Tom Kemp) PGK Dudley La Jaunie Shirley Maher (Wife of Brother Paul Maher) Brother Dan Metroka PGK Bill Miller Brother Raymond Ramos Carolina Withrow (Wife of Brother Nick Withrow) Mother of Brother Terry Walker PGK Charlie Valdez & Consuela Pray for our country and its leaders, especially our President and all our military and their families. The power of prayer is strong indeed and we should wield that power often. Pro-Life Jack Kearney You may not have heard of the Rachel Ministry, but you need to know about it. The Rachel Ministry helps women and families that have been affected by abortion. They give care and consolation to the woman and help her recover her peace of mind and her relationship with God. If you know someone that is hurting from abortion, please contact Rachel Ministries at: or call Life Chain - Annually Life Chain on Sunday, October 7th, invites the churches in each city and town across North America to stand on a designated local sidewalk and pray for 90 minutes, while holding one of the following approved Pro-Life sign messages: ABORTION KILLS CHILDREN JESUS FORGIVES AND HEALS ADOPTION: THE LOVING OPTION LORD, FORGIVE US AND OUR NATION ABORTION HURTS WOMEN PRAY TO END ABORTION LIFE - THE FIRST INALIENABLE RIGHT PREGNANT? Need Help? HELP During the Life Chain hour, idle chatter, frivolity, and both verbal and physical responses to motorists are strongly discouraged. Life Chain is a time for prayerful self-analysis, repentance, and serious commitment to helping end abortion in our nation. Contact your parish for more information as to time and place of the 2012 Life Chain.

Health Line Duane Oefinger, PGK This month I would like to talk about Upper Respiratory Infections (URI). This is one of the most common respiratory illnesses seen in the ER and Doctor s Offices. A variety of illnesses make up this class of illness. They range from the common cold to life threatening illnesses such as epiglottitis. They may be caused by viruses or bacteria. The viral UTI s are the most common. Common diseases are pharyngitis, laryngitis, epiglottitis, bronchiolitis, bronchitis, common cold and tracheitis. These diseases can cause inflammation of the nasal passages, bronchial airways, nasal passages, trachea, sinuses, larynx, tonsils and uvula and subglottic areas. The mucosal lining of the upper airways is usually invaded by bacteria or viruses. This is usually done by person-to-person contact by droplets form a person coughing/sneezing or touching a hand that is infected. The body protects you by trapping the bacteria or viruses in the hair lining the nose, mucus coating the upper respiratory tract, anatomy of the nose and pharynx causing large particles to be trapped in the back of the throat, and hair like cells in the lower respiratory tract trap the invading bacteria/viruses and move it up to the back of the throat allowing it to be swallowed into the stomach. The tonsils and adenoids contain immune cells that act against pathogens. That is why doctors are more reluctant to remove them today than in the past. The body defends itself in many ways, including a group of white blood cells that respond to specific pathogens, chemicals, normal bacteria that exist in the body and kill specific pathogens. Symptoms of a URI include swelling, redness, fluid collection, secretions, fever and an inflammatory response as the body responds to the pathogens and toxins released by the pathogens. The inflammatory response results in swelling of the airways, narrowing the passages and making it hard to breathe. This is especially a problem for small children who cannot tolerate the reduction in airflow and suffer respiratory compromise. The initial infection can result in inflammation of adjoining structures and cause sinusitis, otitis media, epiglottitis, laryngitis, tracheobronchitis and pneumonia. respiratory problems: Below are common symptoms of various Symptom Allergy URI Influenza Itchy, watery eyes common rare; conjunctivitis may occur with adenovirus soreness behind eyes, sometimes conjunctivitis Nasal common common common discharge Nasal common common sometimes congestion Sneezing very common very common Sometimes Sore throat sometimes very common (postnasal drip) Cough sometimes common, mild to moderate, hacking cough sometimes common, dry cough, can be severe

Headache uncommon rare common Fever never rare in adults, possible in children very common, F or higher (in young children), lasting 3-4 days; may have chills Malaise sometimes sometimes very common Fatigue, weakness sometimes sometimes very common, can last for weeks, extreme exhaustion early in course Myalgias never slight very common, often severe Duration weeks 3-14 days 7 days, followed by additional days of cough and fatigue Many URIs are self-diagnosed and treated at home without problem. If the URI doesn t get better, visit your doctor or an Urgent Center or ED. Medications depend on what the cause is and may consist of antibiotics, antiviral, or supporting medications to treat the inflammation. There are other steps you can take to support your body while it fights off the infection. Examples are cool mist humidifiers for certain URIs, glucocorticoids, inhalers, taking the proper amount of fluids, and avoiding going outdoors in the evenings when the symptoms tend to get worse. Other things you can do are turn on warm showers, close the door and sit down and inhale the steam. Take long steam showers. Use nasal saline to remove dried secretions or crusting in the nasal passage. This is especially true of infants and small children. They are nose breathers and anything that blocks their nasal passages can cause a quick change in their breathing and get into respiratory distress. Drink 8 or more 8-oz glasses of water, juice, or noncaffeinated beverages daily to help thin mucus secretions and replace fluid losses during our illness. If you have heart failure, liver problems or kidney failure you will need to modify your fluid intake: contact your doctor for advice and treatment. There are other things you can do to make yourself comfortable. Go to the internet or contact your doctor for further advice. Ladies Auxiliary Genie Kearney The Ladies Auxiliary held their first meeting of the new fraternal year, September 11th. We did some planning for the coming year. The ladies will take a road trip to see the Chihuly glass exhibit at the Dallas Arboretum on Tuesday, October 16th. We will also visit the Dead Sea Scroll Exhibit here in Fort Worth on Tuesday, December 4th. Anyone interested in either exhibits should contact Genie Kearney at The Ladies have started planning for our Annual Brown Bag/Auction which will be held at the November s Family Night. If you have any connections with businesses that could donate coupons or items to the event, please contact the Ladies. Also, it isn t too early to start saving items you have/find for the event. Money raised from the Brown Bag night will go to purchase toys for our Council s Christmas Basket Program.

Council/Family Mark Reljac Much appreciation and thanks to Ernest and Jean Reid for cooking the delicious Jamaican chicken dinner for our Bingo Appreciation Family Night in September. Thanks to our Kitchen and bar volunteers: Paul Maher, Dick and Louise Beckrich, Martin Almendarez, Jack and Genie Kearney, John Freeman, John, Blanche and Lisa Malachi, Audrey Fedor, Diane Garcia and Bob Earley. As for novelty bingo volunteers that night, much thanks to Martin Almendarez, Jack Kearney, Giles Honeycutt, Lynda Burroughs, Ed Queza and Melissa Reljac. The Bingo was well received and we may try it again in the near future. It was a kick just to see Paul Maher playing Bingo! Our special August 29th carpet cleaning day was a success and I want to thank Dave Mazurek, Jack Kearney and Guy Bair for their hard work on that day and the pizza delivery woman. The carpet in the bar and meeting rooms got a thorough cleaning. The NFL Football Season Kick-Off was a great success and I really want to thank Ray and Diana Ramos, barkeepers Ramon and Yvonne Estrada and Tony and Victoria Zamora for taking the lead on this and offering a delicious BBQ Potluck. Everyone enjoyed watching Dallas Cowboys beat the New York Giants in NYC. Three more Football Nights are to come on specific Thursday nights and those dates will be available in the bulletin. I encourage everyone to attend, for a few hours the bar turns into our own private sports club and it was fun for Crazy Ray and I just to trash talk the other's team. Jack has informed me that New Orleans game will include Gumbo. Our traditional October Council Family Picnic will be on the hall grounds on October 6 th starting at 2:00 PM and last til', or inside the hall if there is inclement weather. Early thanks again to those busy guys, Raymond Ramos, Ramon Estrada, Tony Zamora and Ivan Lopez who will be the Grilling Crew for the picnic, with hot dogs and hamburgers. I want to thank Paul and Shirley Maher for volunteering to take the November Family Night. We still NEED volunteers to cook for the December and January Family Nights. Please call me at to volunteer. District Deputy Report Duane Oefinger, PGK This month I am going to present some comments from an article by our Supreme Chaplain Bishop William Lori in July 2012, just prior to the 4th of July. He wrote about our fight for religious liberty. He said that freedom is grounded in moral truth, not relativism. He pointed out that out liberties are protected by the U.S. Constitution and that the religious liberty is very much at risk in our increasingly secular society. When culture becomes disconnected from religion and claims of moral truth, our understanding of freedom itself becomes distorted. He wrote about the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services mandate we have been hearing about in our churches and on the news. He notes that the Catholic Church is not forcing anyone to do anything but instead defending the freedom to follow Catholic teaching in the workplace. The government allows an exemption if a religious organization hires and serves its own people. Bishop Lori points out that the Catholic Church does not look inward and only serve its people, but instead extends itself to all nations and serve the common good through schools, charities, hospitals, and other forms of social outreach. He stated there are two forms of freedom. For many, freedom is defined as the ability to do what one wants, to enhance one s life as one sees fit as long as it doesn t violate another s right

to choose similarly (secular). One must not block the right of others to make the same choices. Moral law, on the other hand, is freedom from what is true and good, and from God, the author and giver of our freedom. The Catholic Church believes that it is free to run its own institutions according to its values, even when these are countercultural. Many in the present administration and new media believe that the Church s freedom only extends to worship, preaching, and teaching. He writes that any notion of freedom that links an individual s choices with a moral law is seen as bogus or phony because it is not consistent with the secular notion of freedom. Bishop Lori cited Dominican Father Servais Pinkaers ( ) who made the distinction between freedom of indifference and freedom for excellence. The freedom of indifference is the exercise of free will without regard for moral truth. Freedom of excellence is the use of free will in a way that looks toward what is true and good; it is the freedom to choose. In the elections this fall we need to remember what the Church teaches and what we as Knights of Columbus have promised to do in supporting the Church and our bishops. Address/Phone Number Change: Bober, John (Fox Run Estates) 2315 Little Road, Arlington, TX BRICK CROSS Visit the Memorial Cross on the east side of the hall. The bricks honoring our deceased Brother Knights are now in place. If you would like to purchase a brick for a deceased Brother Knight from Council 2813, the bricks are $25 and can have three lines, 14 letters each. Order forms are available at the hall. Christmas Basket Program Dear Brother Knights and Families, Summer is over and we are now into our fall season. Hopefully each of you had a great summer. Now that the kids are back in school, many of you will be involved in family and school activities - as you should be. However, don t forget your other family, the Knights of Columbus. First of all, I have some great news - at least for me. Paul Maher has stepped up and said that he wants to work with me, Tom Kemp, on the Christmas Basket Program this year with the potential to eventually take over my position as Christmas Basket Chairman. It is a welcome situation as after at least ten years of working this rewarding activity, I am ready to turn over the reins. Our plan is for Paul to work with me this year. I will work with Paul next year and then turn him loose. Although I have enjoyed this activity, my age, family situations and other considerations lead to a need for new blood. If only every Council activity had someone step in as a backup and eventual leader, the Council would have a very bright future. Now to the business of Christmas Baskets - the joy of the Christmas season will soon be upon us. This year as in the past we will be sponsoring the Christmas Basket Program that has become a trademark for Council Christmas can be a happy time of the year. It also can be a very trying time for others who are less fortunate, especially in these trying economic times.

Now is the time to start thinking about our commitment to our fellow citizens in need. There will be another change this year. Since the Council will no longer be mailing every member a printed bulletin due to extensive costs and manpower requirements, you will be getting the traditional begging letter, with a self-addressed return envelope, via a separate mailing. Look for this letter around the middle of October. As always, please prayerfully consider and budget to give the maximum that you can to help those folks in need. We will be planning to help between needy families again this year, so the need for cash and canned goods donations is great. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ, let us share with the less fortunate brothers and sisters of the Community. There will be more to follow in the November Bulletin. Thanks or your continued support. Tom Kemp, PGK Paul Maher, Chancellor Christmas Basket Co-Chairmen Insurance Andrew Wheaton Contact Andrew Wheaton at or andrew.wheaton@kofc.org.
