5 Church Robert Myers The monthly Knights of Columbus Mass will be celebrated at Saint Bartholomew Catholic Church, 3601 Altamesa Blvd, Fort Worth, TX on Sunday, May 25th, at 11:00 AM. We ask that all Brother Knights please sit together; seats will be reserved in the front of the church for Brother Knights and their families and please wear your Knights of Columbus name tag or shirt. In place of the Pro-Life Mass for the Unborn the Council will have the Annual Patriotic Rosary on Monday, May 26th at Saint Francis Village. The rosary will start at 7:30 PM. Sunshine Don Rejda Many of our Brothers and family members are in need of our daily prayers. Please notify me if you want me to remove or add someone s name to the bulletin's prayer list. Our Council has decided, if we don't hear from you after four months, I will start removing names and place them on our long term prayer list on the Council bulletin board at the hall. Call me at or me at kolaches1942@att.net. Also, notify me if you want me to send a Get Well or Sympathy Card to someone. Also, for our Brother Knights, their wives or their family members that have passed away, please notify me so a Gate Fold of Spiritual Union of Perpetual Adoration can be given to surviving family members. Mike Byrne, Son of Brother John Byrne, passed away last month. A Gate Fold of Spiritual Union of Perpetual Adoration has been ordered. This has been an especially difficult time for our Council this winter. An accumulated of ice on the roof of our building caused the roof to cave in, because of this our Grand Knight Raymond Ramos ordered a Gate Fold for our Council. We need the Adoration Sisters prayers to ask the Holy Spirit to guide and help us now and in the future. Individuals on our current prayer are: Chaplain Father Jim Pemberton PGK Drew Armentrout Romilda Berger (Mother of Rita Johnson) Robert Bienski (Son of Bob Bienski) PGK Richard Collins PGK Vic Fedor Lynn Remualdo-Gallagher Brother Pete Gutierrez III Brother Woodie Hill & his wife Tina Sally Jaeta (Aunt of Brother Mario Lopez) PGK Dudley La Jaunie Anita Lopez (Wife of Brother Mario Lopez) Brother Bernie Maas Brother Paul Maher & his wife Shirley Brother Ernest Reid

6 Brother Louis Sanchez PGK Charlie Valdez & his wife Consuela Rita Johnson (Wife of PGK Ric Johnson) Russell Justice (Son of Brother Lisle Justice) Ruth Kemp (Wife of PGK Tom Kemp) Rob Lambert (Son-in-Law of PGK Ric Johnson) Nina Queza Wife of Brother Ed Queza) Gayle Scheibel (Mother of Brother Jim Scheibel) Pray for the repose of the soul of Mike Byrne, may his soul rest in peace. Pray for our Council and its members so that we may be guided by the Holy Spirit in everything we do. Pray for our country and its leaders, especially our President and all our military and their families. The power of prayer is strong indeed and we should wield that power often. Pro-Life Jack Kearney Abortion rights activists in North Dakota filed the first of what they expect will be several legal challenges to laws recently approved in North Dakota that would make that state the most restrictive in the country for women to terminate their pregnancies. The state's lone abortion clinic, backed by the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights, said it filed a lawsuit in state court that challenges a law. The Law requires doctors who perform abortions to obtain hospital admitting privileges. Can you imagine that? Doctors that have hospital admitting privileges. What would those terrible Pro-Life people think of next. Think about it Real Doctors, not just someone who wants to kill a baby. Officials with the Red River Women's Clinic in downtown Fargo, where protesters hold weekly vigils on Wednesday when abortions are typically performed, argue the law could effectively make abortion illegal in North Dakota. GOOD for them!! Meeting Attendance Drawing Mike Remualdo s name was drawn at the Business Meeting on April 14thfor $20 and was notpresent. Health Line Duane Oefinger, PGK Paroynchia - This month I am going to write about a very common skin infection. Paroynchia is the most common hand infection in the United States. It represents about 35% of hand infections seen and is more common in women than men by 3:1. It is an infection of the soft tissue around a fingernail. It usually found around the sides or the base of the fingernail. It is usually red and swollen and often has pus to the side or base of the fingernail. See the picture below.

7 This picture shows a typical infection. Paroynchia can be acute or chronic. Acute cases often appear gradually and can develop the redness, swelling and pus can develop. It is commonly caused by staphylococci but can also be caused by streptococcus, pseudomonas, gram negative bacteria and anaerobic bacteria. Chronic cases are usually due to a yeast fungal infection such as Candida albicans instead of a bacterial infection. Other possible causes are metastatic cancer, subungual melanoma, squamous cancer and Raynauds Disease. The nail beds become thick and discolored and often develop transverse ridges. The cuticles and folds around the nails may separate, allowing microorganisms to get into the space and cause the pain, swelling, and redness. Paroynchia can be caused from many things. It usually is caused by trauma to the area around the nail such as hangnails, nail biting, finger sucking, manicures, and having artificial nails put on. If you develop symptoms protect the nail. Don t remove any of the nail. If you have an artificial nail on that finger, remove it. If the infection is mild you can soak the foot or hand 2 or three times a day in warm water. You can also put some over-the-counter antibiotic ointment on the area and apply a bandage. You can ask the pharmacist what type of antibiotic ointment to use. You should see a doctor if the finger doesn t get better in 2 or 3 days, you develop a pus filled abscess on the sides or the base of the nail, have a fever, develop red streaks around the nail or develop pain in the joint or muscles. If you are Diabetic you should see your doctor as soon as you can. Your doctor may need to drain the pus from the abscess with a needle. If you are diabetic, have peripheral vascular disease or in an immunocompromised condition your doctor may place you on some antibiotics or anti-fungal medicine. Make sure you take the medicine as prescribed and take all the antibiotics until they are all gone. What can you do to avoid Paroynchia? Avoid trauma to the fingernails and avoid nail biting and sucking the fingers. If you work in a moist environment you are going to be predisposed to these infections. Try to keep your hands and feet dry. Wear latex free or rubber gloves. Use an

8 antibacterial soap if you must wash your hands frequently, dry your hands completely and use an antibacterial moisturizer. If you are immunocompromised you need to be especially careful not to have any trauma, no matter how small, to the finger tips or nails. Ladies Auxiliary Georgia Miller The Ladies Auxiliary met on Thursday, April 10th, at the Community Center. The Auxiliary has dispensed the nomination and election of officers for until such time as Council 2813 has a new home but will meet on a social basis. There will be no May meeting. Mayola Wilkerson presented a very interesting program on the "origin of flowers". Refreshments were by Chickie Wimbish. On June 10th, the Ladies of the Auxiliary will meet at 1:00 PM for lunch at Mi Charrito Restaurant Westcreek. No reservations are required - mark your calendar for the date and time and plan to attend. This will be our last get together until September. Bishop Dunne Building Association David Rubalcaba There will be a special BDBA meeting held the first Tuesday of the month, 6 May, instead of the second Tuesday as normal. This is because we need to discuss what items the Council is go to sale at the Garage Sale scheduled for Saturday, 24 May, such as pool tables, freezers, wooden tables and etc. The BDBA meeting will start at 7:00 PM. FLAG RETIREMENT CEREMONY Please come join the James Gallagher 4th Degree Knight of Columbus Assembly at St. Francis Village on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at 2:00 PM for a Flag Retirement Ceremony. Bring any torn and tattered flags that are in need of being retired.
