The first and perhaps the most important is our obligation to Charity. Our organization is proud of its tradition of Charity. We hear all the time how Knights are contributing to different funds and to our Church. For over seventy years Council 2813 have this same tradition of Charity. Our challenge today is to keep that tradition going. We need to find new ways to make or save money for Charity. We ask that you give any suggestions you might have on how we can better serve our commitment to Charity to our Charity Committee. As we say in our Knights written Principals: There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need. Community Brad Pierce Our next Presbyterian Night Shelter sandwich making night will be on March 26th at 7:00 PM at the Hall. Everyone is welcome, so come on out and join in the fun.

Pray for our country and its leaders, especially our President and all our military and their families. Pray for the Cardinals of the Catholic Church in their selection of a new Pope next month. The power of prayer is strong indeed and we should wield that power often. Pro-Life Jack Kearney A Beating Heart Bill - Several states are looking at a Beating Heart Bill. The Bill calls for the fetus to be considered a person if it has a beating heart, approximately eight weeks into pregnancy. How can someone stop a Beating Heart? Well they do and it s getting harder and harder to get people to look at the baby s side of things. Most abortions come from inconvenience. The baby is inconvenient so we get rid of it, doesn t really matter if it is a person or not. We don t care; just get rid of it. Just consider this: Aren t you glad your parents didn t feel inconvenienced. Health Line Duane Oefinger, PGK I have been asked to write about Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) this month. AMD is a common eye problem that usually occurs in people 50 years or older and the risk becomes greater as you get older. It causes the macula, the part of the eye that provides sharp, central vision for seeing objects, to deteriorate and be destroyed. Usually AMD occurs slowly over a long period of time but sometimes it can occur quickly and lead to a loss of vision in one or both eyes. It doesn t cause blindness but you may have trouble driving a car, reading, recognizing people s faces and doing close work. Usually you cannot see what is in front of you but can use your side vision. In addition to age being a risk factor, other risk factors include smoking (two-fold), race, and family history. Caucasians are at a higher risk than others. People with a family history are also at a higher risk. What can you do to decrease your risk? Avoid smoking, exercise, maintain a normal blood pressure and cholesterol level, and eat a diet rich in green leafy vegetables and fish. If you are on medicine like Coumadin, you will need to check with your doctor to find out how much of the green leafy vegetables you can eat. Early and intermediate stages of AMD may have no symptoms. If you start noticing vision changes you should see your optometrist or ophthalmologist. Only a comprehensive dilated eye exam can determine if you have AMD. The doctor will also have you look at an Amster grid. If you have changes in the lines of the grid or the lines become wavy or disappear then you may have AMD or other eye diseases. There are other tests that can be done to determine if you have AMD and what type. There are 2 types of AMD, dry and wet. Dry AMD occurs when the light sensitive cells in the middle of the eye begin to break down. This leads to blurring in the middle of the eye with AMD. Anyone who develops wet AMD has had dry AMD first. Changes can develop quickly so it important to see your eye doctor quickly if you are having visual changes. About 90% of the people who develop AMD have dry AMD. As the disease progresses you may have trouble recognizing faces and other objects. Drusens are another early sign of dry AMD. They are yellow deposits under the retina and vary in size. These can be seen when your eye doctor dilates your eyes and examines them. If
you have large drusens, you are at more risk for developing the more severe form of AMD. In the intermediate stage you have many medium and large drusens and need more light to read or do some things. With advanced AMD people have a large number of drusens and a breakdown of the light sensitive cells supporting the tissue in the macula and the blurred area becomes larger and darker. This makes it harder to see when looking straight ahead of you. Wet AMD can occur at any time after the development of the disease. Wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels form behind the retina and develop under the macula. Blood and fluid can leak, causing the macula to swell and cause damage rapidly. Scar tissue can develop on the retina. Your eye doctor should give you an Amster grid to monitor your vision after you are told you have AMD. You should ask your eye doctor if it can be treated, what symptoms you should watch for and notify them of, and how the AMD might affect your life. Treatment is dependent on early detection to slow the progression of AMD. There is not a cure for the disease at this time. Some forms of treatment include injecting drugs into the eye, laser treatment of the affected area of the retina, and laser surgery. There is also a study going on now involving the injection of stem cells into the eye, which looks promising. One option is the injection of anti-vascular endothelial factor into the eye block the growth of new abnormal blood vessels. It is injected monthly. Photodynamic therapy is a laser treatment that treats certain areas of the retina. A drug called vertporfin is injected into a vein and after it circulates in the body and reaches the eye a laser is shined into the eye to activate the drug and destroy the new abnormal blood vessels and slow the vision loss. Sometimes laser surgery is used to destroy the abnormal blood vessels. A problem with this therapy is the possibility of the laser destroying healthy surrounding tissue. There is a study going on involving Stem Cells that has proved encouraging but is still in the trial stage. Vision loss can be a trying experience for anyone. Not being able to do everyday tasks, reading or watching TV or go to movies, writing or using your computer can lead to depression and discourage people from leaving their house. Resources are available to help you and provide support. You shouldn t feel like you are being a burden to your family and friends. If you or friends with vision problems show signs of depression like constant feelings of sadness, anxiety, loss of interest in hobbies, difficulty concentrating, restlessness or decreased energy, weight loss/gain, or emptiness you should let his family know or talk to the person and listen to what they have to say and offer support. Remind them they are still the same person and they can help by just being themselves. They may need to talk to their doctor and be referred to a therapist or contact organizations or find support groups to help the person with AMD. If you are having the same symptoms then you should also follow this advice. Ladies Auxiliary Genie Kearney The Ladies celebrated February at our monthly meeting with a Show & Tell of the hobbies we love and a Valentine bulletin board of photographs of ourselves and our husbands with our wedding dates. We welcomed two new members: Juanita Aguirre, sister of member Mary Lou Hernandez, and Yvonne Estrada. The Ladies will cook for the March Family Night with the Saint Joseph Altar. We will make lasagna, salad, homemade bread, and of course all the delicious desserts for the altar. We hope
many Knights of Columbus families and our friends at St. Francis Village will join us for this special celebration. Our next Ladies Auxiliary meeting will be on Tuesday, March12th, at 7:30 PM. Council/Family Mark Reljac First, I want to thank GK Jack Kearney and his wife, Genie, and my wife Melissa for hosting Kitchen duties at the February Family Night. The Spirit of a New Orleans Mardi Gras was present with Red Beans and Rice, King Cake, Bread Pudding and traditional Dixieland Jazz. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to be there because of work, but the hall was decorated in traditional Mardi Gras decorations. Thanks also to Georgia Miller, Liz Freeman, Martin Almendarez, Blanca Berdaner, Sharon Allen, and Julie Bair for helping out. The Spirit of New Orleans continues in March as our Family Night will host the Second Annual Traditional Saint Josephs Altar. This grand tradition allows us to celebrate the Feast of Saint Joseph a little earlier than usual and lets us give thanks to God for our many blessings during Lent and remember those who have passed on as well. The Ladies Auxiliary will host both the kitchen duties for an Italian dinner and baking duties for desserts on the altar itself. Melissa Reljac is taking the lead on decorating the Altar and I encourage all Knight Families and Friends to participate by helping us decorate with photos of dearly departed loved ones along with desserts. I am pleased to announce that we also have help from our Council friend Christine Upton in planning and promoting this year s event. Christine has been especially energetic in promoting this worthwhile tradition. We will create the altar early on Saturday and open early at 5:00 PM for socializing and mixing. Rosary and dinner will start at the usual times of 7:15 and 7:30 PM. Desserts from the altar will then be served with the dinner. As of now, all of Family nights are open for the rest of season. I encourage you to volunteer to host by calling me at (817) District Deputy Report Duane Oefinger, PGK I would like to start off by thanking Bob Earley, Dan Metroka and John LaFleur for helping me with a First Degree held at Council 4709 on short notice. They helped grow the order by assisting in bringing in four new Brother Knights. We have a great Degree Team but we need more members to help backup the members who are presently on the team. Ideally we should have two people for each position. This would do two things. It would allow us to have a backup if someone is sick or can t make it. It would allow us to have members available to do a First Degree on short notice within the District if needed. It would also allow the members who are on the team to take a break from doing it every time. By having more members it may also allow us to hold a First Degree more frequently if needed. Currently, Council 2813 only do one First Degree every quarter so you will not be overly taxed if you become a team member. I would also ask everyone to pay their dues. We have to pay fees for every member and if you haven t paid your dues it puts an unnecessary burden on the Council and prevents us from using that money in areas that are needed. If you are behind in your dues, contact the Financial Secretary or Grand Knight to see what you can do to become current. If you don t wish to
remain a member then contact the Financial Secretary or Grand Knight and write a letter stating you wish to resign and why. If you are unable to pay dues something may be able to be worked out. We would like to have our members remain Knights and be active in our Council. When you took the First Degree and became a member of the Knights of Columbus you promised to uphold the principles of the order: Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. Through Charity we ease the plight of those less fortunate. Through Unity we find strength by standing together to speak out against the attacks on our faith and moral issues facing the Church and society. Through Fraternity we stand together to help one another. Through Patriotism, the Fourth Degree, we are the visible arm of the Order and show we are proud members of our country and witness the values of devotion to God and country. Will you remain true to the pledge you took when you made your First Degree? Our Council needs you and the order needs you. Will answer that call?
