7 Church Letter - September 2016 A man was at an airport waiting to catch a plane and, having some time to spare, he decided to buy himself a coffee and a bag of five small doughnuts. He looked around the busy departure lounge and the only place that was free was opposite another gentleman. He walked over to the space, took off his coat, placed his luggage next to his seat and sat down to enjoy his coffee and doughnuts. He took the lid off his coffee cup and opened the bag of doughnuts, popping one in his mouth. He placed the bag of doughnuts back on the table. To his complete surprise the gentleman sitting opposite him then leant over, opened the bag of doughnuts, took one out, ate it and placed the bag back on the table. As he did so he smiled at the man. Our man was furious. What is the world coming to when people steal your doughnuts?, he thought to himself, but he didn t say anything because he didn t want to make a scene. Instead, he picked up the bag again, took out a second doughnut and this time placed the bag as close to his own coffee cup as he could. That ll stop him, he chuckled to himself. To his utter disgust the gentleman opposite stretched across the table, picked up the bag of doughnuts, took out a second one for himself, popped it in his mouth and put the bag back on the table. By now our friend had steam coming out of his ears. The doughnut stealing thief!, he thought angrily and gave the other man a dirty look. The gentleman then got up to leave but as he did so he picked up the bag with one doughnut left, took out the doughnut, broke it in half, put half in his mouth and the remaining half he placed on the table on top of the bag and pushed the bag closer to the other man, gesturing that it was for him. With a smile he put on his coat and left. Our hero was flabbergasted. How could this other man so blatantly have taken someone else s food? And then have the audacity to

8 break the final doughnut in half? Well he wasn t going to eat it because it was probably contaminated anyway! Angrily he put on his coat, bent down to pick up his luggage and there, sitting on the top of his suitcase, was HIS bag of doughnuts. The person he had been accusing of stealing was in fact sharing his doughnuts. But here is the Theological point God owns all the doughnuts. Everything we have we have been given by God and all that God asks is that we share all that we have been given so that everybody has some. All that God asks is that if we find ourselves with 11 doughnuts when we only need 9, that we share our excess with those who may need it more than we do. The world currently feels a very broken and greedy place with everyone demanding what is rightfully theirs. How different that becomes if we acknowledge that it all belongs to God in the first place and if we love and care and share there is enough of everything for everyone. The Kingdom of God truly can be realised here and now. Janice From the Registers Post Baptism Welcoming Service Hector Fox Darley Petts 7th August

12 A Defibrillator in Great Hallingbury It might save a life Great Hallingbury Parish Council, with an Uttlesford grant, has purchased a defibrillator for Great Hallingbury. A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest. This is called defibrillation and it s an essential lifesaving step in the chain of survival. The Defibrillator has arrived together with the case in which it sits. By the time you read this, its installation on the outside wall of the Village Hall will be underway. There will be an Unveiling Ceremony on Wednesday, 21st September, at 7.30pm after which light refreshments will be served. Then on Monday, 3rd October, at 7.30pm an Awareness Seminar and talk will be given by Martin Render, Chairman of The Community Heartbeat Trust. At this seminar training will be given on what to do if faced with an emergency situation where a patient is unconscious. All residents are invited to attend both events which will be held in the Village Hall. The Defibrillator will be available for emergencies but is only accessible once 999 has been dialled and an ambulance is on the way. This is another example of how Great Hallingbury Parish Council is providing benefits for all residents. Our thanks go to them and to our District Councillor Lesley Wells for arranging funding from Uttlesford DC.
