5 Great Hallingbury Diamond Jubilee Celebrations 2nd June and 3rd June 2012 What a lovely weekend the people of Great Hallingbury enjoyed celebrating the Queen s Diamond Jubilee! The celebrations began on Saturday when over a hundred people of all ages enjoyed a barbecue, races for the children, a jubilee hat competition, a treasure hunt competition and Maypole Dancing by the 1st Great Hallingbury Brownies. We even had our own Jubilee Queen, Isabella Parsbo, who was crowned queen by Lily Este, Great Hallingbury s centenarian. Lily also helped plant a tree, with the assistance of the Chairman of the Parish Council and our Jubilee Queen. A bench outside the Village Hall, donated by the Parish Council, was also dedicated. The celebrations continued on the Sunday with a Thanksgiving Service and Afternoon Tea at St. Giles Church. Representatives from all the village organisations attended the service and processed to the altar to present gifts, which represented their respective organisations, as a tribute to her Majesty the Queen. The Children s Diamond Jubilee Prayer was read by the Head Boy and Head Girl of Howe Green House School and the Chairman of the Parish Council and the Churchwarden read the lessons. St. Giles Church was beautifully decorated with red, white and blue flowers, for which we must thank our dedicated team of flower arrangers. After the service members of the Great Hallingbury WI served

6 a delicious afternoon tea in the church. Over 70 people attended the service. A collection of 160 was raised to support the Queen s Diamond Jubilee Trust. It was good, once again, to hear the clock of St Giles chiming the hour, as it had been repaired to celebrate the Jubilee. Our thanks are due to everyone who in any way supported the celebration events. Special thanks must go to Great Hallingbury WI for providing lunch and tea during the weekend; to members of the Parish Council for subsidising the events and for their hard work over the two days; to Janice for leading the Thanksgiving Service; to Martin Mugele and Geoff Morris for painting the church gates in readiness for the Thanksgiving Service; and to all the members of the Jubilee Committee: Martin Mugele, Jan Baldwin, Christine Coultrup, Freda Townsend and Heather and Philip Hays. 7 The Olive Branch in the Hallingburys We held our Summer bring-and-share lunch on 19th June in the lovely garden at Latchmore Hall by kind invitation of Peter and Sheila Davies (the weather was excellent). One hundred and fifteen pounds was raised for the Jaipur Limb charity. There will be no meeting in July as the date for our Summer outing has been changed to 7th August. 8 Church Letter - July 2012 Following on from last month s letter, I thought that over the next few months I would invite one or two members of the church to write about their vocation to either ministry in the church or society. This month we begin with Jim O Connor as the most unlikely of our churchwardens as he is an American citizen. Revd. Janice Green Just what is a churchwarden anyway? I have often been asked what a churchwarden does and how did a transplanted American come to be one in the Church of England. Unfortunately, the image in many people s mind is one of a bespectacled, bemused chap in a black frock and funny hat from the Dad s Army series. Fortunately, that image is incorrect to begin with he is a verger, not a churchwarden, but that is a subject for another letter. I also don t have any black frocks. The modern reality of a churchwarden is quite different. Apparently, the word churchwarden fi rst appeared in the 15 th century and the Oxford English Dictionary describes the role as, a lay honorary officer of a parish church elected to assist the incumbent in his (her) administrative duties..and generally to act as the lay representative of the parish in matters of church organisation. For the 26,000 plus churchwardens in the Church of England, this is clearly a very broad description and can be interpreted in a virtually infinite number of ways. In practice, the role has evolved greatly over the centuries. The role is also interpreted in many different ways from parish to parish. To understand the function of churchwarden as it now exists, it is probably helpful to list the core primary required duties of the position which, in conjunction with the incumbent, apply to all parishes, as follows: Keep proper records and inventories of property belonging to the church and alterations or repairs to this property, so that the status of the property is known and can be inspected

9 Inspect the fabric of the church building and produce a formal annual fabric status report to the PCC and to the public Annual Parochial Church Meeting Provide answers to regular diocesan enquiries regarding the status of the parish s fabric, bring any issues to the diocesan offi cials attention and ensure that required repairs or modifications are carried out professionally and within legal and diocesan guidelines Maintain the cleanliness and overall appearance of the church and everything in it Lead non-sacramental services on those very rare occasions when the incumbent is not available. As for how an American came to take on this role, I volunteered (silly boy!). About 10 years ago, I became aware that a prior churchwarden was going to retire and as I was interested in contributing more to parish life and had a reasonable set of skills for the job, I put my name forward and was elected. The age old rules requiring that only British subjects could be appointed had also just been changed lucky me. LITTLE DID I KNOW THE REQUIREMENTS OF MAINTAINING AN HISTORIC BUILDING! Having said that, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in office and hope to be able to continue to contribute to our parish life as long as I am required and am able. However, there is still a Beat Surgery being held once a month at Little Hallingbury Post Office where PCSO Joanna Trevail-Philips is available for help and information. She is at the Post Office from 10 to 11am on the following Thursdays:- 7th June, 5th July and 2nd August. 13 Great & Little Hallingbury Flower Show 2012 A brief update to whet your appetite on some of what will be happening at Harps Farm this year on Sunday 15th July 12 noon - 4pm, by kind permission of Mr & Mrs Tom Streeter. Along with our regular appearance from Harlow Brass Band, we have secured the services of a group of Morris Clog Dancers, as well as static and flying birds of prey! You can watch a Flower Club demonstration, listen to a Harpist. The History Society will be there and Mel s Caravan. The Children s Fancy Dress is creating a lot of interest this year, as well as the Inter Hallingburys Tug-of-War. Alongside the many regular stalls and sideshows, we will have Jarvis Nursery, Pampered Chef, face painting, the Model Railway Society, Gardener s Questions, and Andy Streeter s historic tractors. There will be games, Ferrets, Donkey and baby, Caterpillars & Moths, Facepainting and a Bouncy Castle for the little ones. Don t forget the Pimms Tent, W.I. Tea Tent, and the Barbecue! All the usual competition categories will be there; Fruit, Vegetables, Flower Arrangements, Gardens and Flowers, not forgetting Cookery, Photography, Needlework and Handicraft and many more. Any local businesses interested in helping sponsor the Schedule, please contact Diane Aitken on or her on if she has not already contacted you.
