1 The Vicarage Bishopsteignton Dear Friends, Q. Is it only me, or have you too been thinking, I just don t know where this year s gone?! A. You d be right, of course, as this month is the first of the New Year. All of us will be affected by that event, even if only by the increased weekday traffic at school-run times But for students, school staff and parents (and those who find the diaries helpful) it is now the 2015/16 Academic Year. It is an especially auspicious date for all who are starting at new schools of course, and at Bishopsteignton School that includes the new Head Teacher, Mr David Killoran. (As Mrs Louise Prywata starts as Head at Bovey Tracey School.) We wish them all every happiness and success! And though the new Church Year starts with Advent at the end of November, this month also sees the start of a new Team Rector s leadership in the Haldon Team. On Sunday 20 th, at 6.30pm, the Rev d Roderick Withnell will be licensed by Bishop Sarah, the Bishop of Crediton, at St Michael s Church. And so, this month our prayers and very best wishes are with him and his wife, Claire, in their new beginnings here. With love, Stephen LUTON ALTAR FLOWER AND BRASS CLEANING September Kath Vooght IDEFORD CHURCH FLOWERS Sept. 6th Liz Hill/Ronnie Aaronson Sept 13th & 20th Liz Hill Sept 27th Harvest at Ideford We will be decorating the church on Saturday 26th September from 10am. 3 DEVON HISTORIC CHURCHES DAY As the date for this is Saturday 12 th September when St Mary s Ideford will be having a Heritage Day, I plan to have my eighth sponsored drive visiting local churches on Friday 11th September (the first one was in 2004). If anyone would like to join me please contact me on annrj@eclipse.co.uk or The plan is to leave the village at am and return by about 4.00 pm (having a pub lunch somewhere in between visits). The Devon Historic Churches Trust has generously given grants to us in the past to help us keep our church in good order and half the sponsorship money raised on the 11 th will go to the DHCT, the other half comes to St Mary s and will go towards necessary work on the tower. Ann R-J CHRISTIAN AID A total of was raised in our villages during Christian Aid Week this year. Very many thanks to those who kindly collected the red envelopes this year and to all you who made donations. We do still need a local Organiser. This year I acted in this capacity as well as local treasurer but we do really need someone else to lend a hand. Not an onerous job and only once a year so what about it please? Ann R-J FROM OUR NEW TEAM RECTOR.... Hello, Claire and I are very excited about moving to Teignmouth to join you all! I have been in in ministry in Exeter Diocese for 21 of my 25 years since I was first ordained and, although originally from Edinburgh, I have loved being in Devon since the day I arrived here in Claire works as a Radiographer in the NHS and in her free time is looking forward to getting to grips with the garden at The Rectory as well as getting to know all of you. We both hope that many of you will come to visit us once we have unpacked and got the house sorted out a bit. One of the things I have always enjoyed about my ministry has been the countless opportunities allowed me to celebrate significant moments in people s lives with them and with their families. In September it will be real joy for me to be licensed by Canon Sarah Mulally who will be our new Bishop of Crediton. This will be a significant event for me, of course, but having Canon Sarah to be our new Bishop of Crediton is also a significant event in the life of our Diocese and a cause for celebration. From September Claire and I are looking forward to becoming a part of the Haldon Team community and working with all of you as we seek God s will for our churches and our lives. Roderick and Claire 3

7 Looking after the churches in our area - The Responsibility Is Ours A realistic and practical approach to financing the future of your church TRIO Workshop Morning 10am - 1pm 23rd September 2015 (including lunch) at the Old Deanery, Exeter The TRIO programme has been specifically designed to support parishes having difficulty matching income to expenditure. It recognises that for the majority of the members of the Church of England levels of giving are still very low, and seeks to encourage generosity with a pragmatic and realistic approach to stewardship. TRIO aims to enthuse the church family (not just the PCC) to engage with their financial situation, and to implement strategies accordingly. It is about sitting around the kitchen table together and reviewing the family accounts. Please contact us to learn more about how TRIO could help you in your Community. Book your place today! Spaces limited! If you would like to reserve a space please contact: charlotte.vickers@exeter.anglican.org or by 9th September More information from Sue Harvey - idefordlutonpcc@gmail.com THE WORLD S BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING The nationwide coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Support is on Friday September 25 th and I will hold one at 1 Town Farm Court, Ideford from am to 12 noon. 9 THANK YOU! A few people wanting to say thank you this month - IDEFORD SHORT MAT BOWLING CLUB Presentation Evening, Tuesday 28th July Thank you, Alan, Terry and all club members for the very warm welcome extended to me on Tuesday evening. I was honoured to be asked to present the array of impressive trophies to the equally impressive club members. Everyone was very patient with me as I tried out my bowling skills ( or the distinct lack of them!). I was struck by everyone`s enjoyment and team humour and can only encourage anyone who has a little time and wants to enjoy a really sociable evening to go along and ` have a go`. You won`t regret it! The happy, competitive atmosphere was great to be part of. Thank you to all those who organised delicious food and the lovely flowers presented to me by Amber. I really enjoyed my evening. Angie Carter-Woodwark Ideford Parish Council WILD FLOWER DISPLAY! Have you noticed the lovely wild flowers on the corner between Butts Lane and Green Lane? Thanks to the anonymous donor (as we know is called Vicki!) It has inspired us all. CREAM TEAS Thank you to everyone who supported the monthly cream teas this summer - those who baked and served teas, and everyone who came along to enjoy the home baking was raised for St Mary's Church. J.A. FRIENDS IN ASHCOMBE My very sincere thanks to the Ashcombe Churchwardens and PCC and to other friends in the Valley, for the extremely generous cheque which has been given to me following my retirement as organist at St Nectan's - after 43 years! I wish you all joy when the lovely little organ is able to be restored - I always understood that it came from a bombed church in Plymouth and was installed in St Nectan's by the late Lady Rayner in thanksgiving for the Brigadier's safe return from Dunkirk. So it has very special meaning to those in the Valley, particularly those of us who remember Brigadier and Lady Rayner. With renewed thanks and best wishes to you all. Ann Rigby-Jones 9
