Horizons (Y7+8) & Discoverers (Y9+10) meet in the church Welcome Area. At the rear of church is The Haven, a glazed room which can be a great place to take children or babies who are too young to join the children s groups. Inside there are a few toys and books, and the room is connected to our sound system, so you won t miss any of the sermon! The church hall can be found through the rear doors of the church. In the hall you will find toilets and baby changing facilities (in the disabled toilet). 3 Lew Brady s Funeral The Funeral Service for Lew Brady will take place at St Giles on Monday 3rd February at 12pm. Lew and Hilda were members of St Giles for many years and their daughter Christine would like to invite Lew's church family and friends to the service, and to refreshments afterwards in the George Chapel. Vacancy in See Consultation - the process of identifying the next Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham These consultation evenings, chaired by Peter Hill, Archdeacon of Nottingham, are open to all church members and any other interested parties in the community. There are several consultation meetings taking place, including one at St Giles on Tuesday 28th January. The evening will begin at 7.00pm, with a time of prayer for the task ahead. After clarification of the process to identify the next Bishop, the meeting will consider What gifts & skills does the next Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham need to lead the Diocese as we continue to join together in the transforming mission of God? This will be discussed in small groups before everyone comes together to share ideas. The meeting will be concluded by 8.30pm. Please do try to come along to participate in this important decision. Traidcraft Stall Thank you to everyone who supported the Traidcraft stall in the run-up to Christmas - advent calendars, Christmas cards and Christmas tree biscuits were all a total sell out! It is humbling to realise that each purchase really is making a difference to the world's poorest farming communities. Thank you for your continued support from Claire Voce. Senior's Afternoon at the Movies Remember when a visit to the flicks meant a cartoon, newsreel and main feature film. Why not refresh those memories by coming to Church at 1.30pm on Thursday 30th January where you will be able to once again experience the good old days. Coffee and biscuits will be served in the interval and there may even be popcorn (but no throwing this from the back rows). There will be no 6d or 1s 3d seats as they will all be at one price FREE. Please note the change of date the film afternoon has been brought forward a day due to a funeral taking place on Friday 31st. Book Groups The next book for the Afternoon Group is Jane and Prudence by Barbara Pym. Discussion over tea and cakes in the Church Hall Meeting Room on Monday 27th January at 3.00 pm. The forthcoming book for the Evening Group is Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling). We will also be meeting on Monday 27th January at 8.00 pm, at Johanna Langheld's house (72 Repton Road). Men s Social Evening The next get together will be on Monday 27th January from 8.00pm at the Willow Tree pub. 4 St Giles Women s Breakfast Our next Women s breakfast will be on Saturday 1st March, am. We will have a lovely relaxing continental style breakfast with some time for worship and prayer. Our speaker will be Lara Bundock, a Christian Social Worker who is pioneering a project in Sheffield that supports trafficked women when they are no longer eligible to remain in the care of women s refuges. Seniors at The Gondoliers A seniors' outing to see the West Bridgford Operatic Society's production of The Gondoliers by Gilbert and Sullivan will take place on Wednesday 29th January at 7.30pm at the Nottingham Arts Theatre. Tickets are 10 and available from Freda Duckitt or Johanna Langheld. Family Care Bottles Please would anyone who has a family care bottle or box, put the contents into a bag and bring to church in the next week or so, and pass to Carole Sprakes. If Carole is not there, then please give to one of the wardens who will pass it on. Many thanks. Seniors Holiday We are again having our popular holiday break for Seniors at Willersley Castle in Derbyshire. This year it will be for three nights from Tuesday 30th September to Friday 3rd October. The cost is 225 per person and covers full board with an en suite room: nothing extra for a single room on your own. A deposit of 50 secures your place, with the rest payable before the end of August: cheques payable to "St Giles' PCC". As an optional extra, we are considering hiring a minibus to get us there and back and for outings during the holiday. This should cost no more than 35 extra per person. If you would like to join us - and fifteen signed up as soon as it was announced at Bradmore coffee this month - please sign up on the Holiday sheet or speak to David Dunford ( ). He will be pleased to give first timers more details - or you can talk to the many satisfied customers! Job Opportunity at the Malt Cross The Malt Cross is also looking for a part time cafe/bar person - a flexible person who can work daytime and evening shifts on a casual basis: Ideally we are looking for someone with experience working as a barista in a cafe. Bar experience is not specifically required, although desirable. We are looking for someone with a high standard of customer service skills and a friendly up beat attitude with a desire to really become a part of the Malt Cross team. 5 Jericho Road Project Do you have a heart for the work of the Jericho Road Project & have some time to give to serving some of the most vulnerable and marginalised women in Nottingham? There are opportunities to be involved as outreach workers, support workers, befrienders, prison visitors, drivers, prayer buddies... the list could go on! There are roles for both men and women. Performers needed for an Easter Week Musical Chris and Jane McDouall (from New Life Baptist Church) are going to present two performances of Roger Jones musical Jairus Daughter, at St Paul s, Boundary Road.), at 7.30 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week (15th & 16th April). They need singers, narrators, instrumentalists and dancers the vocal parts are easy to learn and the instrumental parts are about grade 3/4 standard. All orchestral instruments can be used plus guitar, bass and drums. Rehearsals will be on Sunday afternoons, pm on March 16th, 23rd, 30th, April 6th & 13th all at West Bridgford Baptist Church hall (except March 23rd which will be at St Paul s, Boundary Road.) Many thanks for the generosity of all who attended the St Giles Nativity on Christmas Eve. 288 was collected, which has been sent to the Rafiki Thabo Foundation, to be passed on to the Ha Fusi School. Thank you to everyone who gave so generously at the Carols by Candlelight service. A cheque for has been sent to Friends International, to support their work in Nottingham. The Friends International Prayer diary for January to March is now available at the back of church please do take one. This week in your prayers, please remember the Trustees as they provide oversight and give direction to the work of Friends International. Pray that they may have wisdom and a clear vision for the future development of ministry to international students.
