It is a film based on a true story about the financial crisis that nearly destroyed the world economy in 2007/2008. It is a true story of what happened behind the scenes and how some people clearly saw what was going to happen. The reason is that they opened their eyes and the thing everyone thought couldn t happen did happen. The housing market collapsed and with it pensions, mortgages, jobs and lives. All the way through the film one word kept on coming to mind, greed and trying to get something for nothing or rather getting someone else to pay for their lifestyle with their money or skills. Greed existed at the top level of banks to mortgage lenders and strippers. Contd. over

2 One of the direst warnings the New Testament gives is not about sex but about wealth, money and the power it seems to buy. The love of money wrote St Paul to Timothy, is the root of all evil. It makes us see the other as primarily a buyer or seller or money machine rather than a human being. Money becomes a measure of true worth and it leads to every possible thing being paid for from water to air. Shell petrol stations for example in the UK charge 50p for air to put in a car tyre. Customer care and safety on the road becomes unimportant when compared with the shiny 50p in the company coffers! Many of the warnings in the New Testament about money is directed at churches especially when money is kept and held instead of doing good. They are attacked when they honour a rich man over a poor one because of his money. Why? Because they reduce a human being made in the image of God to baubles, bangles and gold. To make sure we understand wealth and personal gifts as gifts from God to be used for good we each need to take a spiritual health wealth check and so do we as a church. We will do this on June 12th during our Sunday service. If you want more details of our present finances please speak to Pat Worsley our treasurer. St. Thomas Midsummer Fête 18th June pm-6pm A traditional summer fête at St. Thomas Church and Garden in Kefalas, near Vamos. There will be variety of games and stalls including: A tombola stall - bottles & prizes. Gourmet Food - cakes, biscuits, breads, savoury items, preserves, candies, sweets, oils, flavour raki, herbs etc. Books & DVD s. Plants/pots. Cornish clotted cream teas. Games including Splat the Rat, Fish the Duck, The Buzzer game and many more. Live Music and Bar. Free Admission.

3 Maintenance of Church Buildings & Garden I currently monitor the tasks of maintaining the church buildings and garden. However we do need to find volunteers from within the congregation to carry out specific tasks within a Maintenance Team. If you could assist with any of the following tasks please would you contact me? 1. Regular checks on garden irrigation system including checking drippers, time clock etc. 2. Weed Control throughout all the garden and occasional pruning 3. Cleaning and winding up side panels as required 4. Check gas heaters and arrange replacement of cylinders as required Additionally, if anyone notices any defects in the Church Buildings and Garden that require attention please would you let me know in order that our Church looks tidy and presentable at all times. Many thanks David Hurley Mobile number: moonspinners54@gmail.com Greek Easter, Church Walk on 2 May A pleasant Circular Coastal Walk from Plaka was enjoyed by 15 of us on a warm May Day. Good conversations took place between church friends and visitors including discussions, on the formation of the Plaka Salt Pans on the 6km walk as we made our way through quiet olive groves. After walking on to a coastal picnic spot, all returned to the starting point through the Plaka olive groves. Pictures of the walk can be found on the Church Facebook page. Mary & David Thank you to everyone who have supported our walks over the last 5 years but we feel the time is right to move on now so we will be stepping down from leading the walks in the future. We have found the walks to be very rewarding and appreciated. We hope that other people will undertake to lead future walks and we have many books/leaflets which we are willing to loan. If you would be interested in leading a future Church walk please contact any member of the Church Council. Mary & David Coffee Morning on 12th May A Coffee morning was held at the home of Val and Dennis Holmes on 12th May in Gavalohori. The amount raised in aid of Church funds was 120. Val Holmes

4 Can we be a Good Samaritan for our neighbours? Here is what is going on and how to support it. The Work of the Social Services Department in Apokoronas ( we/us ) These are some of the things we do: We gather food from the baskets in the supermarkets and store it in Nippos until we have sufficient to providing bags of food for the 370 families on the list of families it need in Apokoronas. We provide food on a weekly basis for the 15 families in Apokoronas who have no income at all. We have a store in Nippos where clothes are sorted for those in need. We have opened a clothes shop in Kalyves where people can get clothes they need. Find places in Old People s homes for elderly who can no longer take care of themselves. Help University students from Apokoronas who need equipment for their studies and help with rent. We collect furniture and household goods and deliver to those who need them. We help people get to hospitals for medical treatments. We provide medicines for those who have no money to buy them. We offer support at home for those who cannot take care of themselves. This is how you can help your neighbours in Apokoronas By putting food into the baskets in the local supermarkets. By making a monthly donation of 10 euros to the Social Services Bank account. 5 Prayernet The prayernet consists of about 30 people who respond to requests by praying for individuals or families. I receive requests and then pass them on to people in the prayernet, asking them to pray for people, usually for a week or two, but sometimes for longer if needed. I usually receive updates about how our prayers are working, it is lovely to hear of people who appreciate our prayers and experience healing. All this correspondence is conducted by , and is not very onerous or time consuming. We currently have members in Crete, UK and USA! It would be wonderful to have more people involved the more prayers the better. So, if you feel that you could help by adding others to your prayers do please contact me at: sue _whitehouse@live.co.uk and I will add you to our list. Trish Hudson The forms for financial pledges such as gift aid forms, bequests, sterling account forms etc. are all available on the table at the back of the Tabernacle. Future fund raising events I have put a calendar on the church notice board asking for volunteers to offer their services to raise monies during the rest of the year, e.g. coffee mornings, BBQ and any new suggestions they might have. 6 Trinity and the Sundays after The 22nd May was Trinity Sunday when we focussed on the source of love behind it all. The Trinity describes Almighty God as Father Son and Spirit, three persons in a communion of love which unites them as one. This is the heart of the Christian faith and is the meaning behind Christmas and Easter. Now in the Sundays after Trinity we especially bear in mind God s creation and so the colour returns to green until the end of the year at Advent. During the summer months as many people have to work on Sundays I am very happy to put on some extra evening services of. If you are interested please contact me. On June 5th at our service at 11:00 am we will be dedicating the new porch at the end of the service. It was erected earlier in the year and already it has protected us from plenty of sun and some rain.
