1 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Council Hill Rd. North Pickerington, Ohio February 2015 Volume 22 Issue 4 KOFC COUNCIL NEWS SERVING SETON PARISH AND THE COMMUNITY 21 years Happy St. Patrick s Day Dear Brother Knights, I hope this finds you well and warm during these cold spells. Hopefully, warmer weather is upon us as March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. Speaking of lamb, and I'm referring to the Paschal Lamb, Lent is upon us. During these 40 days and nights, let us all prepare for the rising of the Paschal Lamb, Jesus Christ, by calling to mind the things we can do to cleanse our souls and be fully prepared for the rising of our Lord and Savior. During this time of preparation, we recently had the 18th Annual Columbus Catholic Men's Conference. We had around 60 men from Seton parish attend, many of them Brother Knights. The conference had many inspiring and thought provoking speakers, as well as, an opportunity for Reconciliation and great fellowship with over 2600 men from the diocese. If you did not have the opportunity to attend this year's conference, please make an effort to attend next year's conference on Saturday February 27, Happening at our parish right now, Feb. 28 thru Mar. 3rd, is this year's Lenten Mission featuring Fr. Leo Patalinghug. Fr. Leo's mission is to bring families back together at the dinner table through food and prayer. A message to all of us about the importance of family, prayer, family prayer and togetherness through food at the dinner table. We all need food to survive like we need to partake in the Holy Eucharist to attain everlasting life. When was the last time you had a family dinner and prayed together as one family unit? Take this opportunity and make tonight the night! Our fish fry's continue this month with 4 more to go and a St. Patrick's Day party in there also. The fish fry's continue to be successful despite the cold weather and the response of help has been tremendous. Keep up the GREAT work and volunteer at the next one if you have not done so already. As always, I will continue to pray for God's blessings to be upon all of you and your families. District Deputy Report: District Deputy Joe Dickman had no report. Lecturers Report: Our Worthy Lecturer, Bud Joos saw Lee McPhail in a picture and it reminded him of a story. Woody Hayes was standing on the sideline of a game, dressed only in his coaching pants and an OSU t-shirt. And it was COLD!! Lee was the team manager at the time. An Assistant Coach said "Lee get Woody a sweatshirt." Lee did and handed it to the old, salty coach! Woody snarled and just threw it away. Lee got him another and another and another! Woody repeatedly kept tossing them away. He finally accepted to wear only another t-shirt just to stop Lee from bugging him. Those old coaches were tough. Brothers in Need: Please keep in your prayers Jessica Roberts, Pam Roberts, Danielle Sillings, Maureen Patterson, Bill Sauer, Jeff Samborsky, Carol Puhlmann Schneider, Don Miller, Terri Joos, Ann Schuh, Killian Kilbane (the daughter of Patrick who has cystic fibrosis), The Bowie family on the death of Charlie Allen (Tim's father-in-law), Glen and Anna Williams, the Cleary family following the death of their son (and a former Squire) PJ, Monte Evans, Father Klima (after his assault in the parking lot), our military, and all of our priests and clergy. And on a lighter note in honor of our Fish Fries: Lost on a rainy Friday night, a priest stumbles into a monastery and requests shelter there. Fortunately, he's just in time for dinner and was treated to the best fish and chips he's ever had. After dinner, he goes into the kitchen to thank the chefs. He is met by two brothers, "Hello, I'm Brother Michael, and this is Brother Francis." "I'm very pleased to meet you. I just wanted to thank you for a wonderful dinner. The fish and chips were the best I've ever tasted. Out of curiosity, who cooked what?" Brother Michael replied, "Well, I'm the fish friar." Father turns to the other brother and says, "Then you must be..." "Yes, I'm afraid I'm the chip monk..." The meeting closed at 9:10PM. Have a blessed month. Mike Croyle. Recorder Fish Fry Help Needed Brother Knights, our council fish fry fundraisers have grown to over 525 guests per event (and continue to grow). It is no small task for the council to host such a large dinner. Our Seton Knights are being asked to sign up and commit themselves to a fry or more. Please see the following chart for the 33+ positions we need help for on Fridays. Unless otherwise noted we need you to please show up at 5:00-5:30 and stay to assist with clean up. Please send any slot numbers you are willing to fill to frank.hare@centurylink.com. If you can not commit, still come when you can - we will find a role for you. Thanks in advance for your help and cooperation, the Fish Fry Guys. Field Agent s Notes - "Commentary: Why Long-term Care Insurance May Be a Better Deal Than You Think" Time (02/10/15) Moeller, Philip With the fees for nursing home care averaging $212 a day, an extended stay can devastate the retirement savings of a typical household. Private long-term care insurance can help, but only about one in eight Americans buy it, since the costs are high. Philip Moeller, expert on retirement, aging, and health, provides two topics to consider before purchasing private long-term care insurance. Moeller states, "The odds of your house burning down are very, very small, but you have home insurance nonetheless. The same case could be made for owning long-term care insurance. It offers valuable coverage that preserves choice and financial resources in the event you can no longer manage on your own." He adds, "Of course, more people would probably own these policies if the premiums weren t so steep and price hikes so frequent. Rates jumped another 8.6 percent last year, according to a recent report from the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance." Moeller urges shopping around for a good policy, noting that age, level of coverage, and health will effect costs. Give me a call! Stan Krulia

6 Lecturer Corner Remembering Mgsr. Thomas Bender Why should I remember Mgsr. Bender who passed away this February (2014)? Not that he was born in my hometown of Lancaster. Ohio. Or that he was a fellow alumni from my high school - St. Mary s, Lancaster, Ohio. He was ordained a priest in 1956 by Bishop Ready in As a fellow Knight, he served as Chaplain of Newark Council 712. He regularly spent many first Saturday s of the month celebrating Saturday Mass with our fellow Knights of Council The Father Bender that I remember was that soft-spoken priest who always wore a smile.
