1 KofC Council News Serving Seton Parish and the Community 600 Hill Road North, 1 June 2017 Pickerington, Ohio Volume 24, Issue 8 THANK YOU BROTHER KNIGHTS Dear Brother Knights, As I look back over the last 2 1/2 years as Grand Knight, I am very pleased with our accomplishments as a Council.Together, we have continued to live the founding principles of our order and make an impact in our parish, community and order. We have grown in our relationships as Brothers and in number as a Council. Our fundraising events have grown tremendously each year in attendance, outgrowing current venues and monetarily, breaking grossrecords annually. All of these accomplishments were made possible by the dedication and commitment YOU have to our Council and each Brother Knight. You all have lived up to the motto "MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK". I am most proud of the Brotherhood that has grown and the relationships I have made. I am proud to call you Brother and pray that I have made you proud to call me Brother. Thank you for putting your faith in me to lead our Council. Thank you to my fellow Council officers. It has been a pleasure to serve our Council alongside each of you. Thank you for your support of myself and dedication to serving the good of the Council. I look forward to continuing to serve alongside you and working to keep our Council atop as a leader in the State of Ohio Knights of Columbus. Jimmy Smithberger, Recorder Culture of Life: The Light gets Brighter by the Day An end to abortion is the light at the end of the tunnel and that light burns brighter every day. Oklahoma just passed a resolution declaring abortion murder and chastises the supreme court for overstepping its authority and jurisdiction. ( See article below) Senator Rob Portman introduces the Child Custody Protection Act in the US Senate which would make it a federal offense to transport a minor across a state line for an abortion if it would circumvent a state law requiring parental involvement in that minor s abortion. Ohio currently has 9 bills working their way through the House and Senate that supports the unborn and mothers who choose life over abortion and many other states are wrestling with the issues surrounding abortion through their legislatures. A full 76% of Americans oppose abortion on demand and 51% oppose abortion for any other reasons other than incest and rape or to save the life of the mother. Much still has to be done before legalized abortion becomes a thing of the past but the light is indeed much brighter these days. Oklahoma House declares abortion murder By Reid Wilson - 05/09/17 09:44 AM EDT The Oklahoma House of Representatives passed a resolution Monday declaring abortion to be murder and criticizing the U.S. Supreme Court for decisions that have allowed women to seek elective abortions. The resolution, passed on a voice vote without any debate, carries no force of law. But it takes the remarkable step of specifically accusing the Supreme Court of overstepp[ing] its authority and jurisdiction in Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, two landmark decisions that protected a woman s right to seek an abortion. The measure calls on public officials to stop the murder of innocent unborn children by abortion. It also orders the Oklahoma Supreme Court to stay out of any future cases involving state abortion law. Oklahoma has already enacted strict rules aimed at limiting abortions performed in the state. A woman seeking an abortion must undergo counseling and wait 72 hours before getting an abortion. Health insurance plans offered under the Affordable Care Act may only cover abortions performed if the mother s life is in danger. Parents of minors seeking abortions must be notified before the procedure takes place. And abortions performed after 20 weeks are banned unless the woman s life is at risk. There are only five medical facilities that provide abortion services in Oklahoma, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a pro-abortion rights group that tracks state laws. Anti-abortion groups have helped shepherd new restrictions through state legislatures this year in Kentucky and Iowa. Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) signed a 20-week abortion ban into law late last year, and Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam (R) is considering a similar ban passed by the legislature last week. Pro-abortion rights groups are exploring their legal options in several states, a step that some anti-abortion groups welcome. Those groups say they hope to pass new, more restrictive laws that will create a lawsuit that could make it to the Supreme Court, where they hope justices will reconsider the Roe and Casey decisions. 4 Council Officer Duties Grand Knight: The Grand Knight is responsible for the welfare of the council. He presides over council meetings, acts as an ex-officio member of all committees, appoints a membership and programming director, convenes officers for a monthly meeting, and ensures all necessary reports are submitted to the state and Supreme Council. He should also be aware of the council s financial status and ensure that his signature appears on all checks drawn. The Grand Knight is a member of the Advisory Board with general supervision of the council s Columbian Squire circle. Deputy Grand Knight: The Deputy Grand Knight is second in command. He assists the Grand Knight with council affairs and fulfills all duties assigned to him by the Grand Knight. Should the Grand Knight be absent from a council meeting, the Deputy Grand Knight presides. He is chairman of the council s retention committee and also a member of the Advisory Board charged with overseeing the council s sponsored Columbian Squires circle. Chancellor: The Chancellor has a variety of responsibilities. Primarily, he assists the Grand Knight and the Deputy Grand Knight in the execution of their duties and oversees the council in both their absences. He is charged with strengthening the members interests in council activities. The Chancellor is chairman of the admission committee and a member of the Columbian Squires circle ceremonial team. Recorder: The Recorder is similar to a court reporter or a secretary. He is responsible for maintaining a true record of all actions of the council and its correspondence. Treasurer: The Treasurer is responsible for the safekeeping and maintaining records of all council funds and accounts. He is responsible for depositing money into the council s accounts and provides a certificate of such monies to the Grand Knight. He is also responsible for payment of all expenses. Advocate: The Advocate is the legal representative of the council and serves as the council s attorney at trials and investigations of any interest to the council. While he does not need to be a member of the legal profession, he should be familiar with the council by-laws, the Order s Charter, Constitution and Laws, Methods of Conducting a Council Meeting, and Robert s Rules of Order. Warden: The Warden is the watchdog for council property and degree paraphernalia, except the property of the financial secretary, treasurer and recorder. He is also responsible for setting up the council chambers for meetings and ceremonial work. During ceremonial exemplifications, he will appoint and supervise guards. Inside/Outside Guards: The Guards have similar responsibilities, but distinct differences. The Outside Guard tends to the outer door admitting visitors and members to the inner door. Once at the inner door, the Inside Guard checks to make sure that their membership cards are current. Board of Trustees: The Board of Trustees consists of three members elected by the council and the Grand Knight, who serves as chairman of the board. They oversee the work of the Financial Secretary and Treasurer, and with the Deputy Grand Knight serve on the council s retention committee. During council elections, only the Three-year Trustee is voted on, with the others moving on to become two and one-year trustees, respectively. If you have any questions, please contact any of the current officers. Lecturer s Corner Memorial Day 2017 I was feeling remorse for all the fallen heroes in the past wars in which the United States was active and how it affected all of us at the time. Whether imagined or real our feelings are not to be ignored. The rows and rows of the flags on the graves of our fallen brothers, sisters, uncles, fathers, and the list does go on and on. Whether it be a high school buddy that is still on the side of North Korean mountain and could not be rescued or one of those that we paid our respects and that they did not die in vain The Routine of Prayer So you don t have a second? You say I don t have the time How many times have you said to your co-workers or your wife or members of your family that you just don t have the time! But could you spend just one minute for the next week in conservation with God Almighty? One small step! Set aside one minute for a conservation with God each day. But if you commit your self to and practice it with discipline, you will be will be amazed how that one impacts your day. Keep practicing! How about practicing one intentional act of charity each day? Small changes will be on you! No one will notice but you! Would you take one small step if.. it led to a deep and abiding peace? if you believed it would lead to incredible relationships? if you thought would lead you to a dynamic spiritual life? Every day God asks us to take one small step towards Him! So I ll ask again how is your prayer life? Respectfully submitted: Francis Joos, Lecturer 4
