1 K of C Knightly News St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Council 11187, Pickerington Ohio Dear Brother Knights, Brothers. We trust the Easter season finished well for you and your families. Everyone can now return to those sinful pleasures from which we abstained during Lent and begin to let slip all of those improvements in our personal and Christian lives. Okay. Just checking. We all know that Easter is actually a celebration of 50 days. The celebration of His resurrection continues as should our attempts at acting as better Catholics. Your challenge this month is to continue in your sacrifice as much as you can... especially those directed at improving your faith. For this, we shall all become better. During the past month, our council enjoyed many successful activities. The Fish Fry s wound down with great success thanks to the Cod Crew of Bob Eisenacher, John Letourneau, Thom Laughery and their many able and willing assistants... including our ever special Lady Knights and Squires! Compliments on the different fish offerings came from everyone I spoke with in attendance. Great job, guys. The Parish St. Patrick s Day Party was a huge success! The traditional Irish fare was excellently prepared and the entertainment was wonderful. A young harpist (Natalie Hoffman) played as we dined, the Richen-Timms Dance troupe performed afterwards, a world class Irish singer (Helena Flores) entertained throughout, and traditional bagpipe music greeted everyone entering the PAC! For those of you who could not attend, make plans to put this on your calendar for next year. It just keeps on getting better! Dick and Joie Petersen and Pat Cleary set up this tremendous event and many others made it run smoothly... again with the help of our Lady Knights. Thanks to you all. And a special thanks to our Easter Bunny for greeting all after Easter Sunday Masses. Who was that furry fellow? Unfortunately, with the good comes the bad. With heavy hearts, we stood guard at the funeral of Larry Lotz... a friend, a brother, a fellow 4 th Degree member, and our Council Recording Secretary. Larry lost his battle with infections that overcame his lungs and a bad heart valve. We shall miss him at our meetings, socials, and all the events with which he assisted. He was a good man. As mentioned at the calling hours, we all half expect Larry to be serving as the Recording Secretary at the pearly gates. I can just hear him admonishing Peter now... What name did you say?... as the roll is called. And along with this event comes my personal thanks to all in attendance that day. Our Knights and many ladies managed everything during the calling hours, rosary, mass, and luncheon afterwards. We stood guard, served as pall bearers, performed the readings, acted as choir boys, sang in the choir, were the gift bearers, ministers, and even conducted the luncheon for all afterwards. Peggy kept thanking us for everything and commenting on the beauty of the ceremony. Remember, this is truly why the Knights began... to care for the widow and families of fallen brothers. It was an honor to take part. Please keep Peggy in your thoughts and prayers. I know we shall never forget Larry. Many things are on the docket for April! First, if you have not purchased or sold your four State Bonanza Raffle tickets, please get hopping! If you have not even received them, call me at Tickets are only $5.00 a piece and pay out tremendously! We need to sell at least 404 tickets by the first turn in on April 18. Father has asked that we assist with the food offerings at a Welcoming New Parishioners Gathering following the Saturday Mass on April 9 th. The meeting is to show all new Seton Parish members ways in which they can become involved. What better way to show all the Knights do. Our annual Blue Coat Dinner is on Friday, April 15 th. Please be ready to come serve those who serve and protect us daily... our police, fire fighters, and emergency medical crews. We will be participating in a First Degree ceremony with our Brother Knights from Lancaster celebrating their 100th anniversary. It will be Sunday May 1st at 2 pm with the candidates call at 1:30 pm. Please push to see if we can usher any new members into our ranks. Some of our new Catholics may be interested! It never hurts to ask. And remember, the 4 th degree exemplification is set for the weekend of April at Easton. To those of you 3 rd degree members still out there... what are you waiting for?? This exemplification is in town, so you do not need to travel or arrange for a hotel. Your Assembly will be our new one right here at Seton Parish. Become part of our patriotic Order this year! And early next month we need you to don those aprons and help walk the streets to collect for Measure Up. The dates are May 6 and 7. Be ready to assist Brother George Williams as he calls. Please read inside as more information on all the above is included. Also, take care Inside this issue: to look over the slate of Officer Candidates for next year. If you wish to nominate anyone including yourself, for any position, please contact one of the trustees or myself. Insurance corner 2 And finally, let s hope the weather warms; the golf league gets off to a good start, the grass does not grow too quick, the tax man is merciful, and that you all experience joy in your life this month. 2 2005 Super Cash Bonanza The Ohio State Council Knights of Columbus is conducting a new, Charity Raffle this spring. This fund-raiser replaces the Charity Raffle previously held in the fall and will be an annual event. The fall will now only have the Football Sweepstakes to run. This eliminates the need to sell raffle tickets for two different items at the same time. The name of the spring raffle is Super Cash Bonanza. The tickets are no longer sold in books - six for $5.00. They are just one ticket - one $5.00 price. This eliminates all the extra printing costs as well as the costs associated with the tear offs and drawing! The great news is the savings in costs come back to the winners and the councils selling the tickets. First, let s look at the prizes! First Place: $49, Payable $414 a month for ten years! Second Place: $18, Payable $313 a month for five years! Third Place: $12, Payable $212 a month for five years! Fourth Place: $5, Fifth Place: $5, Sixth Place: $4, Seventh Place: $3, Eighth Place: $3, Ninth Place: $2, Tenth Place: $2, Eleventh Place: $2, Twelfth Place: $2, th 15 th Place: $1, th 20 th Place: $1, The Grand Prize Drawing is on May 27, 2005 at 9:00 PM at the State Convention! We will call you from there to let you know! So, what does this mean to the council? For each ticket sold, our council automatically receives $2.40. Selling our quota of 1 ½ tickets by the first turn in (Monday, April 18), returns us an additional 60 cents per ticket. And due to the fact that we had attendees at the February Road Show to explain all of this, we receive an additional 20 cents per ticket on top of that! All tallied, this makes our return for each ticket sold by first turn in $3.20! Our magic number of total tickets to sell by first turn in is 404. This would automatically gain our council $1,292.80! And there is so much more. Without going into all the financial details, we could receive rebates of an additional per ticket sold following the final turn in on Friday, May 20. To accomplish this, each member would need to account for four tickets - buy one - sell three! This should not be a challenge. We did a great job in the fall. Now, let s do better in the spring! Give yourself a chance to win big bucks and the council a chance to gain more money to give in our charitable way! So - SELL, SELL, SELL! Contact Mike Croyle at for tickets. Mike would also appreciate the offer from anyone to help chair this fund-raiser! Congratulations: Council would like to recognize the following individuals. Their selfless hard work and desire helped make us one of the best Councils in the State: Knight of the Year Neil Ferguson Lady of the Year Kathy Eisenacher Family of the Year Dick and Joie Petersen Volunteer of the Year Wayne Patterson Youth of the Year Tommy Malott Religious of the Year Hector Raymond Chaplain of the Year Fr. Jeffrey Tigyer First Communion Help Needed On April 30 we need 7 to 14 4th degree Knights for first communion. If interested please call me at or by at Wpatterzoo@hotmail.com. Please let me know by April 19th. Thank you. Wayne HELP WANTED Insurance Corner After much deliberation and with great regret I have resigned my position with the Knights of Columbus Insurance organization and will no longer be your council Agent. It has been my privilege and honor to serve each and every one of you and I want to thank each of you for the support that was given to me. Without the support and backing of the council I would not have had the success that I was blessed with and I want you all to know that it has been gratefully appreciated. My decision has been based upon several contributing factors and any further information will be shared on an individual basis. Thank you again for your support. Vivat Jesus. 4 Seton Knights Participate In State Bowling Tournament The 87 th Annual Ohio State Knights of Columbus Bowling Tournament is being conducted at Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn, Ohio (north of Akron) from March 5 through April 24, Our council was represented at this tournament the weekend of March 12 and 13. The following council Knights represented the bowling entry of Seton Knights: Brothers Pat O Linn, Bob Cunningham, Fran Vendetta, Jim Michnowicz, John Pizzuto and Joe Drignat. Singles and doubles were bowled on Saturday at 2:15pm and the team event was bowled on Sunday at 1:00pm. The lane conditions were very difficult due to the minimal use of oil for us bowlers who throw a breaking ball. The scores could have been a little higher but the fun factor was fantastic. We were very fortunate to have a great cheering section made up of our lovely wives. The friendship, laughter, new acquaintances and the competition of brother knights from throughout the state and our diocese were a great time had by all. Next year, the state-bowling tournament will be held in north Columbus at the Columbus Square Bowling Palace. The tournament is a fun time and maybe next year our council can field another team. We had a great time and look forward 2006! Fraternally yours, Fran A. Vendetta, PGK, FDD Candidate List The tentative list of candidates for the upcoming fraternal year 2005/06 is below. In My Opinion - Moral Values vs. Feelings In last month s article I wrote about the 2005 March for Life and promised to discuss the Ohio Congressional Breakfast keynote talk. Columnist Cal Thomas spoke about the need for informed consent laws regarding abortion. Informed consent means that any woman considering abortion must be given information about the risks of abortion, alternatives like adoption or help during pregnancy and after the child is born, and parental notification is required for minors considering abortion. Because Ohio already has an informed consent law I am not going to discuss Cal Thomas talk any further, but rather will look into opposition to these laws. Of course, the so-called pro-choice groups adamantly oppose any and all informed consent laws. Why is this? First and foremost, because they are not really pro-choice they are pro-abortion because of the huge profits this industry generates and because they really don t value human life. And why don t they value human life? In recent years many people stopped looking to traditional sources of moral standards to decide what is right and wrong. Instead of being guided by the Bible and religion, they look elsewhere for moral and social guidelines. For many in America and Western Europe these guidelines are feelings personal feelings have supplanted universal standards. That is why most of the media today refers to terrorists as freedom fighters or insurgents as though beheading innocent people and blowing up children is morally equivalent to attempting to overthrow murderous tyrants. The animals and humans are equivalent movement is based entirely on feelings. People see animals being killed for food or sport and abandon thought completely when they equate their supposed suffering to that of a person in similar circumstances. Many educators are more worried about hurting a child s feelings or self esteem than actually teaching them something, so the public schools are dismal failures in many cities. The secular preoccupation with whether America is loved or hated is also entirely feelings-based. They want to be loved; religious believers want to do what is right and deem world opinion fickle at best and immoral at worst. In the secular view, the entire worth of the human fetus is determined by the mother's feelings. If she feels the human life she is carrying is worth nothing, it is worth nothing. If she feels it is infinitely precious, it is infinitely precious. While religious people are not immune to using feelings in determining right and wrong - after all, patriotism is largely a feeling and religious faith is often dictated by emotion - far more of their positions are based on What is right? rather than on How do I feel? That is why a religious woman who is pregnant but does not wish to be is far less likely to have an abortion than a secular woman in the same circumstances. Her values are higher than her feelings. And that, in a nutshell, is what our culture war is about - Judeo-Christian values versus secular feelings. By Edd Chinnock, Council Respect Life Coordinator 5
