1 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Council Hill Rd. North Pickerington, Ohio February 2015 Volume 22 Issue 4 KOFC COUNCIL NEWS SERVING SETON PARISH AND THE COMMUNITY 21 years Happy Valentine s Day Dear Brother Knights, I hope this finds all of you well and WARM during these cold spells. Since Valentine's Day is upon us, let us take this time of being home with loved ones and reflect what our families truly mean to us. Without the love and support of our families, we could not accomplish all that we do as Knights. With Valentine's day around the corner, we have a rare opportunity to host our Wives' Appreciation dinner on Valentine's day, which is, Saturday February 14. If your wives have not RSVP'd, please encourage them to do so as soon as possible. Let us make this a memorable event. This is a busy time for us as Knights!! We have our last pancake breakfast on February 8th and the Knights Free Throw contest that afternoon. Shortly thereafter, our Fish Fry's begin on February 20th (we will have 6 this year). Our Annual St. Patrick's Day party is also happening during these busy times. I would like to encourage all Brother Knights and wives to attend this year's Men's and Women's Catholic conferences. The Men's conference is a great time for personal prayer, fellowship and recruitment into the Knights of Columbus. Let's make our presence known at the Men's conference with our best attendance yet for Seton parish. I hope to share in this year's experience with all my Brothers in Christ. May GOD's blessings be upon all of you and know that I am praying for you. 4 Respect Life - Happy New Year! Due to a busy holiday season and travels, I have not written a Respect Life article for a couple of months. I would like to wish all of you a belated Happy New Year! Recently Ohio Right to Life sent out this brief summary of 2014 achievements: 9% drop in abortions in Ohio 6 pro-life laws passed through the Ohio General Assembly Ohio Right to Life Infant Adoption Reform signed by Governor Kasich 100% of ORTL statewide candidates elected 85% of total ORTL candidates elected 3 abortion facilities CLOSED 1 abortion facility denied license 1 Planned Parenthood abortion facility fined $25K As you can see, we have accomplished much, including Dr. Samuels deciding to quit the abortion business - we believe our prayers and all the honks for Life in front of his Pickerington clinic influenced that decision. But we still have a long way to go to eliminate abortion in our state and country. The Founders abortion mill is busier than ever, but they are nervous about the presence of Pro-Life people frequently praying in front of their facility. They recently hired escorts to bring women into the clinic while preventing our sidewalk counselors from talking to them. It is very significant that they only escort the women INTO the clinic but not OUT of the clinic - once they have their money the women are on their own. The women often leave alone, emotionally hurting, and clutching their abdomen in pain. There is something YOU can do! This Lent there will be another 40 Days for Life campaign from Ash Wednesday to Good Friday (Feb 18 - Mar 29). We will be praying at the Founders abortion mill at 1243 E. Broad St in Columbus. Please watch the bulletin for the date Seton will cover and sign up to pray for one hour at the clinic. Of course, you can stand and pray at any time during the 40 Days. Also during Lent we will once again collect new and gently used baby clothing for PDHC. There will be a pack n play in the gathering space for these items. The diocesan Respect Life Conference will be Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Immaculate Conception Church. The keynote speaker will be Bishop Frederick F. Campbell, who will speak about the USCCB Respect Life program, Each of Us is a Masterpiece of God s Creation. Other featured speakers will cover topics from the beginning of life to its natural end and how members of the Church can embrace those issues. Mass will begin at 9 am and the conference runs from 10 am until 3 pm. Contact the Office of Social Concerns ( ) to register ($20 including lunch). Edd Chinnock Respect Life coordinator Financial Secretary Request The yearly dues statement for 2015 will be mailed in mid December. Your prompt payment ASAP would be greatly appreciated. The council could save substantial costs if we could avoid sending second and third notices. Thanks in advance for your cooperation. Frank Hare Financial Secretary Fish Fry Help Needed Brother Knights, our council fish fry fundraisers have grown to over 525 guests per event (and continue to grow). It is no small task for the council to host such a large dinner. Our Seton Knights are being asked to sign up and commit themselves to a fry or more. Please see the following chart for the 33+ positions we need help for on Fridays. Unless otherwise noted we need you to please show up at 5:00-5:30 and stay to assist with clean up. Please send any slot numbers you are willing to fill to frank.hare@centurylink.com. If you can not commit, still come when you can - we will find a role for you. Thanks in advance for your help and cooperation, the Fish Fry Guys. Community Notes Brother Knight s. We as a group have done great things for the Community in the last three or four months. Since the Labor Day Parade, the council has gave people of the PMCA 500 lbs of food and turkeys, 250 coats and hats and gloves went to the St Vincent de Pauls Society for Christmas, and Christmas another 500 lbs of food and hams to the PMCA. Last week Fairfield County Point of Light drive counted the homeless of the county and we gave them 48 warm blankets for the homeless. Council should be proud of the silent generosity of the many of us. We do this as the first precept of our organization, CHARITY. I want to congratulate the new members of your council bought in last week. I saw the spirit burning in them of the Holy Spirit to follow us in the footsteps of Christ to keep giving to the poor and needy of the Community. There are enormous challenges ahead of the council in the next couple of months and we will need many hands to accomplish everything we should do as a Council, and for the Love of Christ. Please keep me posted of any worthwhile community events you might like to get involved with and we will discuss. Vivat Thomas Laughery 4
