1 K of C Knightly News November 1, 2006 Volume 14, Issue 1 If you love and enjoy the freedoms you have THANK A VETERAN! NOVEMBER 11, 2006 Dear Brother Knights I wish to thank all of you for the concern and prayers for me with my sudden bout of pneumonia last month. I am doing fine and should be rid of this anomaly in total within the very near future. The cards and calls are deeply appreciated. On to Council business I want to recognize the efforts of so many of you. We have had a successful Membership Blitz for October. Brothers Frank Piper and Mark Knight have gone above and beyond to assure that we have more than made the quota for last month. THANK YOU!! If you have noticed the Knight s Bulletin Board is looking very good in Herrmann Hall thanks to the efforts of Brother Harry Clyburn. THANK YOU!! We have received nothing but rave reviews for the Wife s Appreciation dinner thanks to the efforts of all who attended and especially to Brothers Dick Petersen and Michael Elston our resident Chefs. THANK YOU!! I also need to send a special thank you to Brother Jesse Garcia our dedicated Deputy Grand Knight. When I went in the hospital last month it was on meeting night and I left Jesse in the lurch with no time for preparation. Jesse, you did a stellar job without the benefit of having many assets at your disposal. I promise that this will be rectified for any such future events. THANK YOU!! I m sure that I have left someone out and I sincerely apologize. This Council and all of our members have stepped up and things are going quite well. We are now moving into our busy season with Pancake breakfasts, Fish fries etc. This is going to be a great season! Thank you all for all of the effort! 2 Business Meeting Minutes Minutes for October 11,2006 Prior to opening the meeting, 2 scholarships were awarded. The Scholarships were awarded in the Name of Joe Rossi and Larry Lotz. The recipients were Laura Carr who will be a freshman attending Fisher Catholic and Aileen Curtain who is a senior at Bishop Hartley. The checks were presented by Peggy Lotz and Lorraine Rossi. Congratulations to both young ladies. The Meeting was opened by Deputy Grand Knight Jesus Garcia at 7:38 Role Call: Grand Knight, Advocate, Treasurer, 2 Year Trustee, 3 Year Trustee - Excused. All other officers were present Reading of the Minutes: A motion was made to dispense with the reading of the minutes and approve as published in the newsletter. The motion to approve was seconded and passed. Admissions: 4 - form 100 s were presented for approval. Thomas J. Wilson - Pickerington, OH. Works for Columbia Gas - Proposed by Frank Piper. Christopher Stepkirk - Pickerington, OH. Works for Capitol Tunneling - Proposed by Frank Piper Dwayne Western - Reynoldsburg OH. Works for the USDA - Proposed by Frank Piper George Schneider - Pickerington, OH. Retired - Proposed by Frank Piper Admissions are setting up interviews with these four gentlemen as well as two others that are considering applying. The signups were due to the membership blitz last weekend and all the Knights who assisted at the table. Grand Knights Report: No Report Chaplain s Report: The Chaplain distributed some information from the Ohio Catholic Conference. It was called the resource material for faith in politics The Chaplain talked about the civic duty to vote. The Church does not get into politics and tell you how to vote but it does tell you to vote the way the Church has its values. There are several issues they recognize - Abortion, Death Penalty, assisted suicide, education, euthanasia, family life, health care, immigrants, poor and homeless, food protection, stem cell research, cloning and tax relief. When we talk about Pro-Life we talk about conception to natural death. Not just conception and end of life. We need to look at the death penalty and other social injustices. Pope Benedict makes a clear distinction between public officials and voters. A voter is only supporting an evil if he votes for a candidate precisely because of an issue that is against our Catholic faith. If a voter votes for a candidate that supports issues such as abortion but does so because of his stand on other issues it is permissible. As you vote ask yourself how your vote supports all of your Catholic views and values. It is our moral responsibility to vote and vote with all of our faith values in mind. Treasurers Report: No Report Financial Secretaries Report Bills were read and passed to the trustees for approval and then paid. Communications none We are awaiting a voucher for the fall festival/spaghetti dinner Trustees Report: No Report Chancellors Report: Oct. 29 is Priest Sunday. This is a time to recognize those who have chosen the Priesthood as their vocation. It was suggested that we present Father Klima with a card and Gift certificate in thanks for his service. Ray Creamer has offered to purchase the card and certificate. A motion was made to spend $100 on a card and gift certificate. The motion was seconded and the motion was discussed and passed. Service Committees: Membership: No new members this month. Several new meeting attendees were welcomed to the meeting and thanked for their decision to get involved. There will be a combined 2 nd and 3rd degree at Our Lady of Perpetual Help on October 29 th. All First Degree Knights are encouraged to attend these two degrees. To meet our membership requirements for the October Blitz we are working on getting some of our new members brought in this month. We have 3 choices. One on Oct 23 rd in Powell, one on Oct. 25 in Logan and one on Oct. 26 in Whitehall. Program Director: No Report Church Director: The First Sat. of November will be the Memorial Service. The 4 th Degree is trying to be ready to have one on the same day. Family: The Fall hay ride and family picnic was held last weekend. The total bill was around $XXX. The attendance was light due to the late promotion but all the events were very nice. For the upcoming month we have the Wives Appreciation Dinner on the 21 st. A notice will be sent out tomorrow. Cocktails will be from 6:30-7:30 with dinner to follow. The Wives will have a choice of Beef or Pork. Please RSVP if your wife plans to attend. It was noted that the communication is running late and attendance will probably suffer. An will go out as well as an invite in the church mail box. There were some questions about the amount spent compared to the number of wives attending. The budget amount was questioned for review for next year. Kroger Cares: This month has XXXX charged and we received a check for XXXX. Our total is XXXX for the year so far. We are running at about the same rate as last year Youth and Squires: 2 squires and 2 councilors attended the retreat last month. 3 squires and 3 councilors are attending the fall spiritual retreat in Danville this month. They are having a membership blitz and will have an open house in Herrmann hall on Nov. 19 th after the 11:15 Mass. They will have sent out 700+ invitations. If they get even 50 new members they will need a lot of help from the Knights as councilors. You simply need the protecting Gods Children class and have a background check done by the Knights of Columbus. Business Meeting Minutes (Continued on page 3) 2

3 Business Meeting Minutes (Continued from page 2) 4th Degree report: Bud Thanked the Council especially the golfers for supporting the 4 th degree by participating in the golf outing. We had 11 teams. On October 28 th is the 4 th degree in Marietta and Mike Elston is going to complete his 4 th degree. We would like 4 th degree Knights to show up at the Memorial Mass in Regalia. On Nov. 9 th is the Veterans Day Parade. Anyone can attend this parade. A float is provided for those who cannot walk. Field Agents Report: No Report Old Business: Football Raffle: Final turn in was the 15 th of Oct. 2006/7 Budget: It was pointed out that there were several inconsistencies in the budget. Income was misstated because the per capita was only taken out once and not twice. This is a XXXX discrepancy. For the Football raffle a XXX. profit was stated and that was questioned. It was requested that the budget be reviewed again at the officers meeting. The amount spent on Family, Church and other areas should also be reviewed. The budget was tabled once again until the officers can review and it can be revised and presented once again. Refrigerator Pricing: Bud was asked to check pricing on refrigerators and the only one he found was a new one that was not stainless steel. This one is aluminum and cost $1079. He is still researching. A used Stainless Steel on is about $1,600. We are losing the refrigerator to the preschool. A motion was made to spend up to $1,700 to purchase a refrigerator for the Council to be placed in the Herrmann hall kitchen. The motion was seconded. The motion was then tabled until it could be published in the newsletter. It will be opened for discussion next month. Newsletter: All articles are due on October 25 th. The church boxes have been labeled again and the newsletters will be placed in the boxes each month. Link on website for travel business: discussion at the officers meeting. New Business: This is still pending VA Visit: Our visit to the VA hospital will be on Nov. 4 th. There is a bin under our Knights bulletin board to collect all the items they need. The list of items is in the newsletter. The people going will carpool from Seton at about 11:00. There will be a meal and bingo. Pancake breakfast on the 12 th of November: Lecturers Report: No Report District Deputies Report: Membership is doing a great job with the 6 new members we are now 2 ahead of our quota. There are degrees at Logan on the 25 th and one in Lancaster will be on either 19 th or the 26 th. We are working on a 2 nd and 3 rd in Lancaster during the winter. Matching funds are due between Sept 1 and Nov. 15 and the sooner we get it in the more likely it will be matched. State Report: Fran was very pleased with the turnout at the meeting. It is a good sign of the growing activity of the council. Respect Life: October 29 th will be the 2 nd annual Pickerington Life Chain. We will meet here after the 11:15 Mass and carpool down. From 1:00 to 2:00 we will hold up signs and pray in a peaceful demonstration. This involves many of the churches in the Pickerington area. The March for Life is on Jan 22. The bus will leave early Sun morning and return late Mon. night. The Mass at the Shrine is an amazing event. The next morning is a congressional breakfast. The march is after that. The cost is about $ which includes the bus ride, hotel and breakfast. 6 May We Never Forget... Brother Knights, Join us as we celebrate a Memorial Mass on Saturday, November 4 th for the brother Knights in our council who have passed on before us to eternal reward. Mass begins at 9:00am preceded with the saying of our rosary at 8:30. A brief ceremony follows Mass at the Knights Memorial outside of church. Fellowship with coffee and donuts follow in Hermann Hall. These men, by their membership in our honored order, fostered the practice of unity and the virtues of charity and brotherly love. Please make an effort to join with us and the families of these men in honoring those who gave so much to our council. We shall celebrate the lives of: Monsignor Steve Hawkins Donald L. Davis Joseph E Levandusky Aloysius J. McLaughlin Robert L. Krause Robert R. Snider Dr. Frank P. Sobolewski Adolph Bud Glanzman Paul W. Grubbs James G. Bailey Larry Lotz Joseph Rossi Again... please see if you can find the time to attend. Mike Croyle, PGK Perpetual Adoration Since Perpetual Adoration started at Seton, the Knights of Council have been responsible for the Monday 5-6 am. hour and have filled it very capably with the help of about twenty-five or thirty of the same Knights. We want to extend this opportunity to the entire Council and not just the same few men. We have over 270 Knights registered and if each Knight would take just one hour one week of the year, he would not be called on for about five years. How simple that would be? I will start contacting individual Knights to set up dates. Please be VA Hospital Holiday Party Brother Knights, Our Council will soon participate again with other Diocesan Councils to recognize our U. S. Veterans. There will be a Holiday Party and Luncheon on Saturday, November 4 th at the VA Hospital in Chillicothe, Ohio from 12:00 to 4:00p.m. In addition to serving lunch and conducting entertainment (Bingo), we will provide Holiday Gifts for the Vets to pick out. Here are the items suggested on the Gift list: If any of you wish to recognize these veterans for the sacrifices they have made for us, please contribute gifts to this effort. A box for the items will be placed by the Knight s Bulletin Board in Hermann Hall. Our council shall purchase gifts for distribution as well. If you cannot find the time to shop on your own but wish to contribute, feel free to donate cash. Make the check payable to the council. Either way, we would love your contribution. More so, we tremendously encourage all of you to make the trip down to Chillicothe with us. We realize this Saturday is set for celebration of our Memorial Mass and the obligatory OSU game is always on, but when you think of the sacrifices our veterans made for us, a Saturday morning and afternoon seem to pale in comparison. We will meet in the church parking lot at 11:30am and leave shortly thereafter. Thanks in advance for your help. Vivat Jesus Mike Croyle, PGK KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS In Service To One. In Service To All. receptive to this plan and spend one hour of the year with the Blessed Sacrament in Adoration. 7 Respect Life Month October is Respect Life month, so it is appropriate that Seton s Respect Life group sponsored a table at the Pregnancy Decisions Heath Centers fund raising dinner in early October. Again this year, Seton was well represented. PDHC is a wonderful organization because not only do they counsel women on alternatives to abortion and offer free ultrasounds, they also help these women after their babies are born. They know that seeing your baby on an ultrasound machine virtually guarantees the mother will not have an abortion. It makes the child so real to them when they can see the heartbeat and watch their baby move around. After birth, PDHC helps the new mothers with layettes and other needs. Seton has been generous in donating these type of items for the new mothers in our annual February baby goods collection for PDHC. The keynote speaker at the dinner was Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. Fr. Pavone is a dynamic speaker who is passionate about life issues. If you ever get a chance to hear him speak, please take advantage of the opportunity. Fr. Pavone often speaks about abortion and Roe v Wade, so many people, including priests in our diocese, think he is only concerned about the unborn. This impression is not correct, however, and his speech at the PDHC dinner proved otherwise. He spoke quite a bit about Terri Shiavo and described how he sat at her bedside while she died of dehydration by court order. Her husband (and doctors he searched for until he found some who would agree with him) claimed Terri was in a vegetative state and got a liberal judge to agree. Fr. Pavone described a very different Terri - one who turned her head toward people who were talking to her and laughed or smiled at jokes. When Fr. Frank described watching her die with two armed guards in the room to make sure no one gave her even a sip of water to wet her parched lips, it brought tears to many eyes. Fr. Pavone also talked about other life issues, but spoke most about the effect of over 30 years of abortion on society. He spoke briefly about the problems mothers and abortion providers have later in life and how many of them need counseling and regret their actions and decisions concerning abortion. Priests for Life works with Project Rachel to help people with post-abortion healing. His main point, though, was how legalized abortion has reduced respect for life in all areas - from caring for the sick, to euthanasia, to genocide, and so on. He said it has generated a real culture of death and moral relativism. One effect Fr. Pavone spoke about is survivor s guilt. Almost everyone born since 1973 knows that they could have been aborted. They wonder why they survived when other did not. They wonder about lost brothers and sisters and what changes these missing siblings would have brought to their lives. Even if abortion didn t directly affect their lives, young people today know their lives aren t worth as much as they should be. They know there are school mates they will never see and friends they will never know. They wonder about medical cures and inventions that will never happen because the minds that would discover and create were snuffed out. Fr. Pavone spoke about all aspects of Respecting Life, from conception until natural death. While he lays the blame for much of our current culture of death on legalized abortion, he also is also working very hard to promote a culture of life that honors life in all its aspects. It is up to us as Pro-Life Knights of Columbus to support a culture of life in every way we can. One way you can support life is to go with us to the March for Life in January. On Sunday, January 21, 2007, the Knights of Columbus will again sponsor a bus to Washington DC for the March for Life. We will leave early Sunday morning and return late Monday night. We start by attending an awesome Mass for Life in the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Sunday evening, stay in 5-star hotels, eat at the Ohio Congressional Breakfast, and walk up Constitution Avenue with thousands of other Pro-Lifers. This year the cost is $160 per person. Mark your calendars and reserve your spot on the bus by the end of November. Contact me for more information. Edd Chinnock, Council Respect Life Coordinator K of C First Saturday Mass First Saturday of the month Mass, starts at 8:30 am, with a Rosary service for vocations. This is a great way to support our Parish! NOTICE: The deadline for articles for the newsletter will be the 25th of each month. 7
