February, The Golden Legend The Life of Saint Valentine Here beginneth the Life of Saint Valentine, and first the interpretation of his name. Valentine is as much to say as containing valor that is perseverant in great holiness. Valentine is said also as a valiant knight, for he was a right noble knight of God, and the knight is said valiant that fleeth not, and smitheth and defendeth valiantly and overcometh much puissantly. And so Saint Valentine withdrew him not from his martyrdom in fleeing, he smoth in destroying the idols, he defended the faith, he overcame in suffering. Of Saint Valentine the martyr: When Saint Valentine was brought in an house in prison, then he prayed to God, saying: Lord Jesus Christ very god, which art very light, enlumine this house in such wise that they that dwell therein may know thee to be very God. And the provost said: I marvel me that thou saysest that thy God is very light, and nevertheless, if he make my daughter to hear and see, which long has been blind, I shall do all that thou commandeth me, and shall believe in thy God. Saint Valentine anon put him in prayers, and by his prayers the daughter of the provost received again her sight, and anon all they of the house were converted. After, the emperor did do smite off the head of Saint Valentine, the year of our Lord two hundred and eighty. Then let us pray to Saint Valentine that he get us pardon for our sins. 5 Respect Life: March for Life Student Comments The March for Life bus trip was another great success! In spite of cold, rainy weather, almost 500,000 people came to celebrate life. EWTN covered the march in its entirety and they said that 80% of the marchers were young people. That is nothing short of amazing! On our bus trip, we had 8 students from our SPY program - THANK YOU KNIGHTS for supporting them financially - and 2 students from St. John Neumann parish. On the ride home, I asked them to share their thoughts about the March and the trip. Read for yourself what an impact this trip had on them: Shayna Muetzel, age 14, Freshman, Seton Parish. This experience has shown me so much. In the beginning I felt abortions were women s choices as an easier life. Like do what you need to do to succeed. But through all the Masses after the youth rally it made me realize why it was such a big deal. I went from a pro-choice accepter to a pro-life warrior. I appreciate everyone s love and friendship they ve offered and given. This is definitely a life changing experienced and I appreciate everything its taught me. Alex Meineke, 17, Junior, Seton Parish. This was my first time on the march, and I came essentially unprepared. I knew very little about abortion, and I did not have much of an opinion, other than I knew it was wrong. After this amazing trip though, I can accept nothing less than being the biggest pro-life activist I know. Before the March, there was a man who said slavery took 89 years to be abolished. We have had abortion for 39 years. We can NOT wait another 50 years for abortion to end. This is the generation to end abortion. Amen I say to you. Carlie Goodchild, 17, Senior, Seton Parish. I am part of Seton Parish Youth (SPY), Leadership and Confirmation team. This is my first March for Life. To be honest, I came on this trip on a whim. I figured why not? It will be fun, you ll get to see DC. I ll never forget looking back on those hills and seeing just as many people behind you as in front of you it s awesome. ALL of those people there supporting what you support, loving life like you do. That emotion was overwhelming along with sadness, horror, disgust, and pain when I saw the photos and videos of quarter sized aborted babies. So close to tears, so close. And the Mass at the Basilica, can you say beautiful?! And I ve never experienced a Mass like the Youth Rally. I plan to do everything in my power to return next year. One more thing I made a wish in the fountain at the Basilica. I don t wish for abortion to be illegal, I wish for not one more baby to be desired to be aborted. Josh Williams, 14, Seton Parish My experience was one I will not soon forget. I found it crazy that 500,000 youths could get together. The sheer power of our will when we put our mind to it is unstoppable. This March is such a beautiful thing and I hope and pray that people see that. I will definitely come back for many years to come. Mike Fulton, 17, St John Neumann This is my third time participating in the March for Life, but it was still just as powerful as the first. At Mass in the Basilica I felt an overwhelming sense of unity and fellowship with the 18,000 people all gathered for one purpose: to stand up to abortion. Leave it to the universal Catholic Church to band together in such desperate times to defend the defenseless. Doreen Amoako, 13, 8th Grade, Seton Parish I really enjoyed the March for Life. It honestly opened my eyes. I knew abortion is wrong because God only has the choice to give and take away. I also knew that there are many people who believe the same. But the fact that we all came together to make a point warmed my heart. There wasn t a single moment where I wasn t having fun. That was my first time and there are many years to come. Sarah Fogus, 13, 8th Grade, St Pius The Youth Rally was awesome. Great music! It is something everyone should go to. Emily Fogus, 16, Sophomore, Seton Parish This is my third year coming on the March. Each year always brings new challenges. I enjoy growing stronger in my faith and standing up for what I believe in. It is so moving to see how many people feel the same way about these issues. I had a great time on this trip and look forward to coming back again next year. Matt Winings, 18, Senior, Olentangy HS, St John Neumann. This is my second year on the March and it was even better than the first. Coming with parishes other than my own gave me an opportunity to meet other high school students who share my fundamental beliefs as a man of God. This trip gives me an opportunity to make a difference in an aspect of American culture that other countries don t see. This is the atrocity in our own cities that we can eliminate and is the greatest cause I can think to be part of. Taylor Bowie, 18, Senior, Seton Parish This is my seventh year on the March and every year is a new and exciting experience. It is breathtaking to see the number of people that make the pilgrimage to Washington to defend those who cannot defend themselves! I am grateful to have the opportunity to do the same. About The Catholic Man of the Year: The 2012 Columbus Diocese Catholic Man of the Year is Tom Wagner of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Pickerington, Ohio. Tom was nominated by friends, family, and parish members all citing his tremendous spirituality, generosity, and service to his fellow man. His example of heroic virtue stands out through the incorporation of his Catholic faith in his home, in the parish, and in our community. You will not want to miss this luncheon as we will learn of Tom s personal story and how it can help each of us by showing his example of a man fully and devoutly living his Catholic faith. He uses a week of his vacation time each year to lead a summer work group, where they provide labor to help build and fix-up homes and buildings for the poor. 7 A Proud Knight: On January 28 th and 29 th the PAC was full of young people enjoying Council events - The Statewide Squires Dodgeball and Seton s Free Throw competition. Watching our brother Knights working with the children, was something I d like to share. Seeing Mark Knight (Chief Counselor - Seton Squires Circle 4891) beaming in the stands, amidst the cheering crowd, watching the Squires competition and turning to me and saying this is what makes it all worth it. Watching our lead referee Mike Croyle point and shoot another contestant out. Listening to (the very tired) Steve Malott, Mike Phillips, Justin Stone and Mark sharing stories of the evening s escapades during the sleep over while enjoying their morning coffee and still smiling. Then having the opportunity to admire a parade of 50 plus fine young men head over for 8:00AM Mass in various Squires dress shirts, it was all a definite wow and reminder of why this was 2011 s state of Ohio Squires event of the year. Then at 1:00 PM on Sunday Joel Potts hosted our annual Free Throw Contest. The concern prior to the event was if we d get much of a turnout. Well the event had 30 plus participants and bleachers full of supporters. To hear Joel eloquently speak to the attendees is something to behold. He made each and every competitor feel special. He gave credit and much thanks to the parents, our Parish, PYAA and the Knights for such a worthwhile event. Seeing Steve Malott (still going on little sleep), Mike Croyle and Joel s daughters (Lauren and Courtney) work so patiently and compassionately with the young guests just made me give thanks for such good people. I encourage all my Brother Knights to try and attend these annual events in the future and share in the pride of being a member of the Knights of Columbus. Frank Hare Program Director The of the Year Awards Yes, it is that time of year again. We need your "of the year nominations. All these awards (except 1) are mandatory for the State Program. We would appreciate the establishment of a regular cleanup crew. The events this year will feature a new Take N Go carry out window. As always donated dessert items are needed - especially the wonderful home baked items by our ladies If anyone should have a working chest freezer and be willing to donate it, we could put it to good use in the PAC kitchen for the fish fries Any point of contact or suggestion regarding a sign making company is needed. 8 God and Evolution In the Western World, some people contend that science and technology have disproven the existence of God. Atheists and agnostics say that Charles Darwin s Theory of Evolution, Quantum Mechanics and Philosophers like Friedrich Nietzsche have proven that the so called, Age of Enlightenment reveals that we are alone in the Universe. They say that, reason, directly correlates into a Universe that is completely void of a creator and an afterlife. However, I believe that they are wrong and not only does God exist but the burden of proof is in his favor: I contend that our Universe, more than likely, reveals a vast, elegant and beautiful existence of God. Many skeptical macro-biologists argue that amino acids came together as a chemical reaction from non-living matter. Evolutionists often argue that evolution disproves the existence of God but I think that they are wrong. The true reality of macroevolution is that the pattern and development of species is not limited to our current time and space, meaning that species are also affected by time. For example, consider a random scenario where, 3.5 to 4 billions years ago, the first amino acids were coming together to form unique proteins. Conventional theories of evolution suggest that these early chemical reactions were made inside of our time, in a single progressive timeline, which does not take into consideration what quantum mechanics now teaches us about the different laws of physics surrounding very small particles. Theoretical Physicists now think that inside of a black hole, Albert Einstein s Special Theory of Relativity does not apply, gravity is infinite and time stops. The mass of the black hole is contained inside of an infinitely small point and yet, the surrounding space is virtually empty. I believe that these theories can also be extended to evolution, meaning that life on Earth was affected by space, time and quantum mechanics. Going back to my original example of amino acids, consider the following: Billions of years ago, as the first amino acids are about to create a more complex form of life, a natural rip and flaw in the fabric of time opens and five molecules from present day arrive in the past and intermix with each other. The original amino acids are changed-forever. Now, seven molecules are taken from the same amino acids and sent forward in time to present day (2012). The changed molecules, which might contain DNA from a dinosaur or other ancient species, land on the same space that they had occupied billions of years ago: The surrounding environment is instantly changed. The exchange of chemicals, from one time to another, could happen many times and it would be virtually impossible for s cientists to notice the subtle changes. Now, these effects during the human lifetime might not seem like enormous changes but on the scale of roughly 4 billion years, the constant fluctuation of chemicals from one timeline to another prove that the evolutionary development of a species is not limited to a single timeline and, possibly, not even one single universe. Thus, I believe that there is far more likely evidence that God must have interviewed at some point in the evolutionary process and placed our human development in motion. Many of our current ideas about evolution might be only tiny seashells of God s great plan of creation, spread throughout a vast sea of unexplained beauty. Adam 8
