1 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Council Hill Rd. North Pickerington, Ohio June 2013 Volume 20 Issue 8 KOFC COUNCIL NEWS SERVING SETON PARISH AND THE COMMUNITY HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!!! 237 Years and Counting!! Dear Brother Knights, HAPPY 4 TH OF JULY Thanks to a little league doubleheader this weekend, I was fortunate to attend St. Joseph s Catholic Church in Sugar Grove Ohio. During the homily, the priest read the words of Benjamin Franklin from 1776 before the writing of the Constitution of the United States. He noted that after weeks of discussion and everyone bringing their agendas to the meeting, Benjamin Franklin was finally frustrated and spoke. He reminded all the men that prayer had always been at the fore front of all their meetings. That prayer had always been there before battles. He addressed George Washington and the other leaders to establish a guideline that a prayer to God would be said before every meeting. That God should always remain as the Guide in their decisions. With that in mind, and on this 4 th of July, let us all continue to pray vigilantly that God will always remain as the Guide in these United States of America and it will always be one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. I would like to start our monthly meeting, July 10 th, at 6:30pm with our new officers and program directors. In this meeting, I would like to form an agenda for the following year. What we as a council would like to accomplish and/or establish. All other members should come at 7:30pm for our regular meeting. We will then discuss and vote on these new proposals. Dates to Remember: Wednesday, July 10 th - 7:30pm - Monthly (6:30 for Officers) Sunday, July 14 th - Officers: Hilton at Easton. We will receive our packets for the following year from Supreme. Time will be given at July 10 th meeting. Wednesday, July 24th (possible 1 st Degree Ceremony) May you all have a safe and relaxing summer! 2 Business Meeting Notes - June 12, 2013 The meeting began initially with the introduction of our scholarship recipients and them being given their rewards. The winners of our scholarships and a brief bio of each were: Jonathan Kluczynski - Jonathan is a sophomore at Bishop Hartley High. He carries a 4.0 grade average while taking honors courses in English, Math, and Science! He lettered in swimming and as a freshman this past year competed in the State Championships. Jonathan has also played the viola with the Columbus Youth Philharmonic Orchestra for the two years. This summer he will attend Wright State University to take a forensic Course. And if you stopped by our Fish fry Events you saw Jonathan working alongside Grandpa Al in the kitchen! Grace Masters - Grace will be 6 th grader attending St. Mary s School in the German Village next year. Her previous education at Pickerington had her involved in volleyball as well as her studies. She was a member of the Chevington Swim Team and was actively involved in Religious Education. She also serves as a greeter at the 11:15 Mass at Seton where her grandfather, Don Miller. Serves a head usher. Gracie really looks forward to Catholic education being a part of her daily schedule. We are proud of and thank both recipients for their continuing in the faith and are honored to bestow these awards. We would also like to thank all others who submitted applications for the scholarship and encourage them to submit them again during our next fiscal year. The scholarship recipients were then dismissed, and the business meeting was called to order at 7:40 by Grand Knight George Schneider Roll Call of Officers: All officers were in attendance with the exception of: our chaplain, the Deputy Grand Knight, our Advocate, the Financial Secretary, our Warden, and our Guards (we were almost unprotected) and our 3 year Trustee. It must have been a busy night elsewhere. The minutes of the last meeting were amended to note the change of the dates for the Squire s State Meeting from May to June. The Recorder was nearly fired for this error. The corrected minutes were motioned for approval, seconded, voted on and passed. Chaplain s Report: No report this month Membership Committee Report: Mike Sillings mentioned we have 3 men ready for the First Degree which will be brought in at the start of our next fiscal year. For the past year we have added 8 members. To improve our Membership goals, Mike has established a committee for assistance next year with Wayne Patterson, Jesse Garcia, and possibly our Grand Knight as members. If you seek involvement in this selection process please contact Mike. Communications: Nothing special in regards to communications this month. Grand Knight s Report: G.K. George Schneider then began with a list of important items. Our Grand Knight sought the leadership of committee members for next year and received great support. The Grand Knight then reminded all of Membership and the opportunity to receive a beautiful medallion for those bringing in members. G. K. George then spoke of a definite focus for next year the celebration of our Council s 20 th Anniversary! Treasurer Report: Brother Mike Phillips shared our bank account totals and we are financially sound. Financial Secretary Report: Acting F.S. Frank Hare thanked outgoing FS Mark Borys for his past service and assistance in the transition of duties. The bills which were read were motioned to be sent to the trustees for payment by Wayne Patterson, seconded by Ryan Anderson, voted and passed along. Report of the Trustees: The Trustees reported the upcoming election for officers would be concluded later. They also wished to note the excellent service we provided as dinner for the Youth musician group who performed at Seton recently. Father Klima was very thankful for our efforts and the Apple Cobbler which was served as dessert was claimed to be heavenly. Chancellor s Report: No Report. Report on Programs and Committees: Program Director: No report, but Mr. Petersen will be taking over these duties next year. Membership: It was discussed that a plan for membership activities will need files for the new year with Supreme. Mike Croyle will work with Mike Sillings on this. Church Director: Brother Bog Glavan introduced Brother Colin King who was one of our recipients of our RSVP funds. Brother King is actually a Franciscan monk which is one of the Orders which allows members to become priests! He educated us on the strict focus of other orders and admitted the Franciscans were a little looser than that. His final descriptive of the order was that of being more like drunken feral cats. However, their service and commitment to God is what counts. He thanked us for the money and mentioned it would be used for a project to help take eight students with him to Jamaica to serve the needy. After completion of his duties and seminary assignments, Colin hopes to enter the priesthood by We wish him the best of luck. Community Director: No Report. Council Director: The Mother Seton statue work is completed thanks to Brothers Glavan and Lowery and she is back in position outside the church. If you drive by at night she shines like a beacon. Brother Glavan reminded everyone of the social event being held the 4th Wednesday of each month at 9:00AM in the morning at Bob Evans. Come if you can, but remember that everyone pays for their own breakfast! So, if you have the capability stop by. It might be nice to bring a brother with you if they have not been involved in a while. And for these events wives are allowed to attend as well. Treat those beautiful ladies to breakfast and win points rather than having them stay home and do your laundry! Family Director: Brother Ryan Anderson is our new Family Director as is happy to be involved and we thank him for his Business meeting minutes (Continued on page 3) 2
3 Business meeting minutes (Continued from page 2) commitment! Youth Director: Brother Garcia spoke on our Youth and claimed a successful completion to the SPY program this year. The Leadership group (adults) is having a team meeting on June 18 to plan for next year. SPY will be having their Car Washes after Sunday masses soon. Check the bulletin for exact dates. Drop your car off during Mass and drive home afterwards in a shiny vehicle! On a final note, Brother Jesse mentioned a future project of a Spaghetti Dinner to help raise funds to send our youth to New York for a Catholic youth Convention. Look for more on this in the upcoming months. Right to Life Director: There was no report as Brother Chinnock was with grandkids, but be aware that the Abortion Clinic is now unfortunately open. Please try to help pray outside the Clinic when possible. On a good note, the PDHC dinner raised ~$40,000 for their facility. More money is needed and is something we might consider donating to in the future. Squires Report: Brother Mike Phillips spoke of the State Convention to be held this month and three Counselors and four Squires would be in attendance. He listed the Squires roster as 18 strong young and growing. He also hopes to take them to a Clippers game in July. Our Council thanks Mike and past Chief Counselors Mark Knight and Steve Malott for their tremendous Catholic guidance of our youth! Festival Food: Brother Frank Hare said planning was already underway for festival and encourages anyone wishing involvement to give him a call. He also brought up the issue of the big sign board needing fixed, in order to secure the letters and avoid any pranksters adjusting them to spell un-christian like words! Unfinished Business: None. New Business: The Elections of Officers was then conducted by our Trustees. See the last entry in this article to view their name and respective offices. Report of the Fourth Degree: The Tour Meeting is scheduled for July 14 at the Hilton at Easton. Our Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight, Financial Secretary, and Program Director will attend to receive the Program responsibilities to be fulfilled this next fiscal year. A report on the State Convention was given by Brother Mike Sillings on the two days activities. As an update on awards we received the following commendations: The Dynamic Administrator Award, Best Squires Activity for Division 4 and Silver Cross Award for all programs being successfully completed. There were only 20 of these given to all of the councils in the State! And two of the most notable awards were: Diocesan Knight of the Year went to our own Frank Hare! Diocesan Volunteer of the Year went to our own Wayne Patterson. These two gentlemen exemplify what being a Knight is and we are proud of their excellent efforts and privileged to have them as members of our Council! Good of the Order: Brother Bud Joos then regaled us with a story on milk. His lead in story poked fun at his beloved wife, Terri shame on you, Bud for complaining about how much heavier they are making a gallon of milk these days. Think about it. He then talked about the days when milk was delivered to your doorstep and how lax the restrictions were on milk companies and farmers alike. He first told the story of when some milk poured on cereal in the morning produced the note left behind for the milkman in the milk box the day before!! He then spoke on how milk companies now crack down on farmers who enter tainted milk into their coolers by adding milk from cows with infected udders being treated with antibiotics...a definite no-no. Milk companies usually take a sample of the milk before adding into the truck. Each is tracked by farmer. Now, many farmers add their milk to the same truck. Farmers think mistakenly that the antibiotics will dilute with all the other entries and their entry will not be found. They are stunned and penalized when the samples taken show as being received from their farm! The penalty? Receiving the bill for the entire truck load of infected milk! Stay legal, my friends. Field Agent Report: No report this month. District Deputy Report: We have a new District Deputy, and will have his name available by our next newsletter. Stay tuned! Brothers in Need: Please keep in your prayers Glenn Williams, Maureen Patterson, Jeff Samborsky, Fr. Snoke, Scott Mucha, Ed Loch, Tim Hickey, Ron Blymire Sr., MaryAnn Croyle, Martin Croyle (deceased), Chris Chamberlain, Carl Masslanka, Gene Ebert, Rosella Hrycko, our military and as always our priests and clergy. And finally the new Council Officers for the Fiscal Year are: (drum roll, please ) Chaplain... Fr. Jim Klima Grand Knight... George Schneider Deputy Grand Knight... Glenn Williams Chancellor... 4 Respect Life: - New Fraternal Year As we begin our new fraternal year, a few thoughts: First, abortion doctors Mervyn and Milroy Samuel finally opened their clinic in Pickerington on June 3, about six months later than intended, thanks to our many prayer warriors and the Pickerington City Council! Unfortunately, they hope to be open four days a week instead of the two we were previously told about. We have been praying at the clinic ever since we first found out about it in January. Our prayers are making a difference - Dr. Samuel talked to one of our Knights on the sidewalk in front of the clinic and threatened him if we do not stop harassing them. How praying on a public sidewalk is harassing was not said, nor was what they think they can do about it. Quitting the abortion business would be a good way to do that! Since January we have been praying at the clinic during their proposed operating hours on Monday and Tuesday. Due to the high volume of traffic on Hill Rd we also pray on Saturday to increase public awareness of the nature of this clinic and its doctors. Apparently they plan on adding Wednesday and Thursday as clinic operating days, but so far are not open then. The good news is that we are getting a lot of support from other Pickerington churches; the bad news is that we need many people to support this prayer effort. We need help from EVERY Knight in our Council and Assembly, please choose one hour to pray at the clinic. If you can come every week, wonderful. If you can only come every other week or even once a month, we still need you. You do not have to talk to anyone - just pray for the aborted children, their mothers, and the doctors and staff of the clinic. We pray at the clinic during these times: Monday 2:30-4:30 (several churches cover, Seton welcome) Tuesday 2:30-6:00 (Seton covers Tues) Saturday 10:00-12:00 noon (for public awareness) Park on McLeod Park drive or in Winfree, Ruff parking lot, Winfree has graciously offered the use of their restrooms if needed. As our old fraternal year closes and a new one starts, please prayerfully consider taking on the position of Respect Life Coordinator for our Council. I have been filling this role for over ten years now and feel that it is time for some new blood and ideas in this role. I would also like to turn over the leadership of our annual bus trip to DC for the March for Life to someone - this is a great trip that we must continue to support. I will support whoever assumes these leadership positions and help them in any way I can. I am too committed to the Culture of Life to allow them to go unfulfilled so I will stay on as needed until replacements can be found. Until then, thank you for your Respect Life efforts and PLEASE come pray at the clinic with us. Edd Chinnock, Respect Life coordinator 4 Perpetual Adoration Since Perpetual Adoration started at Seton, the Council has been responsible for the Monday 5-6 am. hour and we have filled by using the call list. When I call, please sign up for a time. The following dates are covered: July July My thanks to those Knights who have volunteered an hour. I believe they would tell you they received many blessings in return. Calling All Knights! Knights of Columbus IN SERVICE TO ONE, IN SERVICE TO ALL We need men to pray outside the abortion mill on Hill Rd North on Mondays and Tuesdays from 2:00 to 5:00pm. Please take one hour to come and pray to stop this travesty from staying in our community only one block from Seton. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! to Life.htm We are now on Facebook, head to our website, ( click on the facebook link and sign in (an account is required). Registering and using are free and easy...
