1 February 1, 2008 Volume 15, Issue 5 Happy Valentine s Day KOFC COUNCIL NEWSLETTER St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Council Hill Road, North Pickerington Ohio Dear Brother Knights, First, I wish all the ladies of our Council a Happy Valentine's Day... As I stated last month we are into our busy season. After finishing off a very successful Pancake Breakfast run, we now turn our attention to the upcoming Lenten Season. This year is a bit different. We will have our first Fish Fry before the next business meeting, so it important that we get the word out that your help is needed. When the call comes in for help, please find some time to assist. Remember, you do not have to wait for the call... contact any one of the chairmen and see what they need. I would like to thank Bud Joos and Gene Ebert for their work on the call list. They (along with the rest of their team) make sure that people are notified and we have plenty of help If you read the article on the fish fry, 40 to 50 people are needed for each event, and a lot of this time is needed prior to as well as after the event. Yes, the ever popular set up and tear down/cleaning needs bodies! On March 5th the Knights will work the Parish Mission. We put the call out for chili and of course Wayne is looking for people to work. Be expecting a call for help here! Again, this is part of our mission and we want to present our usual exemplary involvement as Knights. For those of you who missed the 1st degree on Wednesday, January 23 you missed the opportunity to meet our newest member John Heppner. But you also missed probably one of the best degrees in a long time. The team was (to borrow at Gordon Ramsey term) spot on. I encourage you to attend the next one and be impressed! Finally, I remind you that after attending the Knights first Saturday Mass and social, the Officers meeting follows and is open to all. Come see where the Council is going and guess what - we'll even let you have a say. ;-) Jesus V. Garcia III Grand Knight Deacon Hector had prepared an article to tie in with the Right-to-Life march. But due to time constraints, the article will be included in next months newsletter He did wish to thank the Council in supporting the delegation that participated in the Right-to-Life march. Newest Knight Council wishes to congratulate John Heppner on becoming a member of our Council. John was given his degree on Wednesday, January Looking Inside... 2 2008 March for Life - The Roe Effect This year s March for Life in Washington, DC, on January 21-22, 2008, turned out to be a real adventure. For those of you who don t already know, our Chapter decided at the last minute to not sponsor a bus this year because they lost money on the trip last year. That caused me to scramble around trying to find another bus for those who had expressed interest in going to DC for the March. I found one from Cincinnati, but it didn t get to DC in time for the Mass for Life at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Monday evening. As this Mass is one of the highlights of the trip, we really did not want to take that bus. I found another bus from St. Cecelia s parish in Hilliard, but it left on Saturday for a four day trip. At this point I had about 20 people interested in going, but the SPY students couldn t leave on Saturday because they had a retreat on that day. Others couldn t go because first Reconciliation was also on Saturday. We had about 10 people scheduled for the St. Cecelia s trip, but the organizer couldn t get enough others to pay for the bus and had to cancel her trip after Christmas. She found another four day trip out of Ascension parish in Kettering, but it was quite a bit more expensive and only had 10 seats left. The St. Cecelia s group took 5 of those. By this time our group had sunk to only 4 people, so we took the last 4 seats on the bus. Thanks to the generosity of our council, Deacon Hector, Knight Jim Anderson, and Vicki and I were able to go on this trip. We also helped pay for two SPY students, Christina Serrano and Taylor Bowie, to go to DC for the March. They drove with their mothers, youth minister Barb Serrano and RCIA director Tina Bowie, instead of taking a bus. The longer trip was much more relaxed than our usual 2 day trip, so we were able to do some sightseeing as well as attend the Mass for Life and various Pro-Life events. As in past Marches, the 35 th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, was another great event. The number of young people - high school and college students - was truly impressive. While it is hard to know exactly, my guess is that about 75% of the estimated 200 to 300 thousand marchers were students. To see that many young people getting excited about protecting life from conception until natural death gives one a lot of hope for the future. The Mass for Life on the vigil of the March was again an awesome event. The Basilica normally holds about 6000 people, but at least 10,000 managed to squeeze (and I do mean squeeze!) in. The entrance procession had so many seminarians, deacons, priests, bishops and cardinals it took over 30 minutes! I counted 9 cardinals, 33 bishops, over 350 priests and so many deacons and seminarians I didn t even try to count them. The next morning we attended the Youth Rally for Life and Mass for the first time. It was held in the Verizon Center, which is much like Nationwide Arena. There were over 20,000 young people there and their enthusiasm was awesome! They enjoyed Christian rock songs followed by a Mass for Life designed for young people. To hear 20,000 young people singing with gusto during Mass is something that must be experienced to be believed! After the Mass, we had a mini-march for Life to the Mall where President Bush addressed the crowd via phone from the White House. Many other speakers energized the crowd with various Pro-Life messages. While we were waiting for the March itself to start, the Seton group met an incredible family. A mother and father and their 19 adopted children drove down from Pennsylvania for the March. No, that is not a typo - they adopted 19 children! Several speakers at this year s March mentioned the Roe Effect. The continuing decline in the number of abortions as well as pro-abortion support has been dubbed by several writers as the Roe effect. This says that pro-abortion people have fewer babies and when they do have children they pass their pro-abortion views to them, so they in turn have fewer children. Meanwhile, pro-life people continue to have children at a far greater rate, so the pro-abortion movement is slowly dying out while the pro-life movement continues to grow. Maybe there is justice in the world after all! Sometimes it truly seems like God has a sense of humor! All eight of the Seton people (3 Knights, wives of 3 Knights and daughters of 2 Knights) who attended this year s March for Life would like to express our sincere thanks to Council and the Squires Circle for their generous support. Without it, this trip would not have been possible. Thank you all very much! Edd Chinnock, Council Respect Life Coordinator Deacon Hector, Vicki and Edd Chinnock at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for the Right-to-Life march 4th Degree Are Ready! Are you a First, Second or Third Degree Knight of Columbus that has been in at least 1 year (a 6 month wavier maybe available) and is looking to complete the journey to Knighthood? The weekend of April 18, the Exemplification of the 4th degree will take place in Newark Ohio. This two day event consisting of the registration, Mass and banquet on Saturday (19 April) and the Exemplification on Sunday (20 April) is part of an exciting weekend. Information about the Exemplification can be found at the following website: or ask any 4th degree member for a Form 4. Jesus Garcia III, PFN Pope john Paul II Assembly

3 Business Meeting Minutes January 9th, 2008 Meeting opened at: 7:34 pm Roll of Officers: Chaplain, Advocate, Lecturer, 3 year and 1 year trustees excused. All other officers present Reading of the Minutes: One correction was made. It was clarified that we were not sponsoring a bus but there were several other bus going to the Right to Life March. A motion was made to approve the Minutes from the previous meeting as published with the correction made from above. This motion was seconded and passed. Chaplain s Report: No Report Admissions: 1 form 100 was presented for Stewart Ferguson. The Admissions committee is working to get him in on the 1 st degree on Jan. 23 rd. He is currently an active Squire. The form was presented for approval and passed. Grand Knights: The Grand Knight wished everyone a Happy New Year and reminded everyone that the of the Year" awards are coming up and we would really like to participate in this. If you know of a Knight, Lady, Clergy, or Volunteer do a little write up and submit it to an officer. At the officers meeting we discussed changes made in bus availability and scheduling for the Right to Life Trip. Previously the council had approved $400 for the Right-to-Life trip at the end of the month, but due to some problems at the chapter, the bus was cancelled and Ed had to scramble to find alternate methods to attend the march, which also resulted in an increase in costs. He has allocated $200 to two SPY students and asked if we would allow him to give $100 to Deacon Hector (due to the cost going up) and turn in the additional $100. We found this acceptable and actually allowed Ed to use the remaining $100 towards his own cost. This trip went from 20 people attending to 8 due to the bus cancellation. For Next year the council officers have also asked Ed to investigate what it would take to maybe have us sponsor the trip. We would approach St. Pius and John XXII to see if there was interest in the venture remembering information is free. It was also mentioned we could coordinate with the State Knights of Columbus which has a bus going this year for next year s trip. The invitations have been sent out for the Clergy Appreciation dinner. We invited Fr. Klima, Fr. Fairchild and Deacon Hector and Mary Lloyd. Frank and I will also attend with our wives. At the meeting there were requests for additional seating. If anyone else is interested the cost is $30.00 per person, please contact the Grand Knight with your request. The Grand Knight reminded everyone that there is a Pancake breakfast this weekend. Four new program reports were filed in the Nov - Dec period. All were accepted and requested updates were provided for previous submissions. Dues letters are out and the second notice will be coming out around the end of the month The Grand Knight reminded everyone that if you know of a Brother Knight that is in need of assistance with his dues, have them call the officers so that arrangements can be made. We want to make sure that we do not lose anyone that wants to be a Knight. Communications: The Grand Knight informed the Council that there is an upcoming 2008 basketball tournament. If anyone is interested in forming a team and participating please contact the Grand Knight. The entry fee is $ The event occurs on April 5 th and 6 th. The deadline to submit our entry is March 20 th. We will publish an ad in the newsletter to let anyone not attending the meeting know about the event. Up to 15 people can participate on a team. Membership must be verifiable for all members. Treasurers Report: Magnet sales report. Sold case 15,908 magnets. We have about 25 cases left. We have XXXX in checking and about XXXX due to us. We owe XXXX for the second pallet and we owe about XXXX. We estimate our profit to be about XXXX. We will be looking to improve our marketing efforts for next year. Once all bills have been paid a CD will be purchased with the profits. We are in the process of purchasing a second CD. The Treasurer is now working on establishing a budget and will be looking into an income forecast for the remainder of the year. Financial secretary Bills: The bills were read, passed to the trustee and paid. It was noted that we have been lacking in recognizing our Honorary and Honorary Life Members. Honorary Knights must have been active Knights for 25 consecutive years and 65 years of age. To be Honorary Life you must be 70 years of age and been an active Knight for 25 years or more. The Honorary member s dues are reduced to only $10.00 to cover the per capita. The Council is not required to pay per capita on Honorary Life members so dues are waived for them. Tonight Frank Sanderell and Mark Borys were both presented with Honorary Life cards. 2 additional members will be mailed out as they were not present. Trustees Report: The Trustees will review the audit at the pancake breakfast. They also reminded everyone that there will be a 1 st degree on the 23 rd. The trustees offered recognition to those organizing the Magnets sales this year, and suggested we advertise in the 4 th degree exemplification book. The fish fry s produce a significant amount of our annual income and offer a great opportunity to get reacquainted with old friends and, for newer members, to make new friends and become better acquainted with other Council members. Each weekly fry requires willing hands (actually 40-50) who are willing to work hard for a couple of very busy hours clearing tables, serving, pot washing and general cleanup. Wives and significant others are gladly welcomed. Also, we need several couples starting about 3:00 to wrap utensils, prepare condiments and generally help us get organized. If your schedule is such that you would be able to arrive later and help with late cleanup you would be most welcome as we are always short of these people. The fish fry's are scheduled for February 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th, and March 7th. Please keep these dates open on your calendar. If you re contacted please agree to help out. If you re not contacted please contact one of the chairpersons and make your willingness known. Also, this year we are in need of a group of people to make telephone calls to brother Knights during the week proceding to arrange for desserts. 6 Information Interested?... Interested in starting the New Year off on a very positive note? How about taking a look at your spiritual life and your personal relationship with your Lord and your brothers in Christ. You may want to consider looking into participation in one of the three Seton Men's Fellowship Groups that are meeting regularly in our Parish community. There are approximately 25 men getting together to praise the Lord, review scripture passages, familiarize themselves with the new Catechism Of The Catholic Church, pray for and with each other, and I believe one group even praises the Lord in song as well. Thanks to the fire of the Holy Spirit and the good works of these men through evangelization this Ministry continues to grow. At the present time, we have four other men who are waiting to lead their own groups. Size of the groups is limited to no more than 10 men, but some exceptions can be made based on the wishes of the group. This Ministry at Seton is an outreach of the Catholic Men's Ministry of the Diocese which sponsors the annual Catholic Men's Conference which many Brother Knights attend. Bottom line Brother Knights: If you feel you are as close to Jesus as you can be, then just ignore this invitation to join us. If you want to "kick your relationship up a notch" please give me a call. We now have groups in early stages of development, or groups actually functioning in four of the ten Parishes in our Vicariate. The Holy Spirit is with us and we know we will continue to grow. I sincerely hope that you will look into Seton Men's Fellowship and really get your New Year off to a great start. Prayers for all, Harry Clyburn Deanery 7 Leader Columbus Catholic Men's Ministry Membership Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to all practical Catholic men, 18 years of age and older, who are in union with the Holy See.
