Martn, son of James and the late Ann Malloy Martn, and Elzabeth Rose Spears, daughter of Edward and the late Rose Murray Spears, excnunged ther marrage vows. On the stroke of nne, the strans of Mendelsohn's Weddng March sounded forth and the brdal party advanced toward the altar, the brde on the arm of Francs Martn who asssted hs brother as best man; and the brdegroom at the sde of Mss Gertrude Spears who was her sster's brdesmad. The brde was charmng n a gown of whte embrodered net over pnk satn, a whte pcture hat wth pnk velvet streamers, and harmonzng accessores. She carred pnk roses. The brdesmad was attred n powder blue satn wth a pcture hat of vktc lace. Her bouquet was of whte carnatons. The altars were decorated n pastel shades of gladol, wth accents of green sprays; whle tall tapered w T ax candles and candelabra of whte crystal candle lghts shed a mellow glow over the sacred settng. Large bas- Mr*. Hubert Martn kets of rural garde also n flowers t-curned the sde altar. Offcatng at the servce was Rev. Followng the ceremony, the brdal party were guests of the brde's father at a danty and delcous weddng breakfast served at the Lakeland Country Club where covers were lad for thrty-two relatves and close ffrds. The old blue law provdes that at the rngng of a bell at 9 : p. m. all chldren under the age of 7 years must be off the streets and home n bed. Now the Wndsor curfew bell, lke the horse and buggy, the old kerosene street lghts and the pcket fence has long ago dsappeared and the Serg. s all tred out explanng to youth under 7 that the curfew does not rng any more and never wll, for there s no bell connected wth t any more. Ths old ordnance relatng to the curfew wa found among the archves of the cty councl, dusted off and ordered enforced as a war tme measure but the job s dffcult. Pnckney, lke many Mchgan towns once had a curfew and probably stll has for there s n<> record that t was ever repealed. Back n the nnetes t was vgorously enforcl ed by the late Dan Murta, who was tl»on vllage marshall. About 8: p. m each nght he would take out hs watch and watch the mnute hand creep around. About 9: p. m. he went to the town hall and vgorously rang the bell whch was the n located on-the roof of ths buldng. Then he patrolled the busness secton wth hs eagle eyes dartng rght and left n search of chldren under 7 years of age. f they were accompaned by t: T parents he passed them by but f not they were ordered home and usually obeyed hs command. We understand that two of the most persstent curfew law volators back n those days were Ross Read and M. J. Reason. Ths curfew law was enforced here for a number of years and then langushed. Several attempts to revve t faled and for years or more t has been a dead letter law and wll probably reman so. North Mchgan resort boosters, nstead of beng envous or resentful have welcomed our words of prase. The reason s unque, and t s largely geographcal. Mchgan s not one pennsula; t s two. The tourst must travel through the lower pennsula hr for he gets to the upper pennsula j thus a good word for one nevtably benefts both. q "he cool and charmng land of ' Hawatha, once a center for mnng ;.nd lumberng, has been havng a steady comeback economcally due 'rgt ly to several factors: more automobles, more roads, more lesure lme for vacatons, and more facltes to accomodate the Amercan gypses. Another reason s relef from the heat: The average temperature n ths north country s ffj degrees, no matter how hot t s elsewhere. f you only had two weeks tme for o vacaton, how much of the Uppc Pennsula could you vst? George E. Bshop, secretary mannge of the Upper Pennsula evelopmenl Bureau at Marquette, sends us there suggestons: See the "Seven Wonders" of Hawatha land. When you glance at the map, the eghth wonder wll be that s possble for a traveler to cover so much terrtory. 2 -.., ssue of Thrd Term Wll Be Hotly Debated Frst, anyone who doubts that the Republcans and ant-thrd term Democrats are gong to let the thrd term ssue pass unnotced must be somewhat "teched" n the head. From what s now planly vsble, every fact and every possble supposton about a thrd term, or the tradton aganst any man stayng n the Whte House for years, wll be fllng the ar and the newspapers from the moment that Mr. Wllke's speech of formal acceptance s recorded. t s much too obvous to pass by also, that the Roosevelt opponents wll accuse hm of every type of malcous desgn and nsncerty whch clever poltcal brans can conjure nto wrtten or spoken word. From many sources among Democrats who are stckng to party fath and doctrne, always heretofore strongly resentful of the thrd term dea, hear that preservaton of the party, tself, depends upon preventng Mr. Roosevelt from becomng the frst person to have three consecutve terms. t s too early to say whether those Democrats wll be effectve n ther ad to the Roosevelt opponents, but, whatever ther numbers are, they tell me of ther decson to regan control of the Democratc label. The war wthn the Democratc party tself together wth the thrd term ssue, therefore, presents the bass for a tremendous shft of parm : > BruckarVm Washngton Dgest New U. S. Poltcal Algnment s Now Takng Defnte Shape By WLLAM BRUCKART WSV Servce, Natonal Press Bldf., Washngton, D. C. WASHNGTON. Somethng lke four years ago, wrote n these columns an expresson of belef that Presdent Roosevelt would be the nstrumentalty of our era to brng about a realgnment of poltcal groupngs n the Unted States. wrote, then, that hs own thoughts and actons, together wth the sources of the advce he was accept* ng, would brng about ths result whether Mr. Roosevelt so ntended or not. The predcton that made n November, 96, was based upon what beleved lkely to be the prncples to whch Mr. Roosevelt would adhere n hs second admnstraton. There was no ntmaton at that tme, however, that Mr. Roosevelt could, or would, be a nomnee for a thrd term as Presdent. Even wthout that ndcaton, the wde breach between the conservatves of both Democratc and Republcan partes, on the one hand, and the advsors that surrounded the Presdent seemed certatvto accomplsh the end that then predcted. Wth Mr. Roosevelt seekng hs thrd term under the Democratc label, and Wendell Wllke runnng as the Republcan nomnee, there surely can no longer be any doubt that the campagn of 94 wll see a complete and very unusual shft among voters. The closng of the polls on November wll have recorded, beleve, probably the greatest transton n poltcal thought algnment that our naton ever has known. An asserton so broad requres an explanaton. An explanaton of the reasons can go only to the fundamentals of the crcumstance. That brngs the statement that, n the mnds of many long-experenced poltcans, the ssues are gong to be more sharply defned ths fall than n most any campagn wthn the recollecton of ths observer. DEFNTE ALGNMENT "The closng of the polls on November wll have recorded," accordng to ths artcle by Wllam Bruckart, "probably the greatest transton n poltcal \ thought algnment that our naton f «Wr has known." He goes on to explan that the break between flte followers of the New Deal phlosophy of government and the opposton to such phlosophy wft become completely evdent ths fall. { Banter at the Fght Camps. *ryr ty strength. t forms, the bass for one phase of that realgnment for whch spoke. f those Democrats fal to regan control of the party and they were beaten down n the Chcago conventon by the well-oled New Deal facton's machne the conservatve wng of the Democratc party has no place else to go, save to the Republcan sde. Some of them, lke Vce Presdent Garner, who was so completely gnored that hs name hardly was mentoned at Chcago, doubtless wll go a-fshng. There wll be qute a few of those. The queston yet to be answered s, how many wll be nactve n the campagn? Relef and Farm Vote Should Co to Roosevelt On the other hand, Mr. Roosevelt wll gan some votes from the other sde. He wll get a large percentage of the relef votes agan, as he dd n 96, and he wll have perhaps as much, as 4 per cent of the farm vote, or that s the guess of men who know poltcal thought n agrcultural areas. The Presdent's foregn polces have proved attractve to certan elements n ths country, and obvously they are gong to stck wth the man who has helped ther fatherlands. From these three angles the relef, the farm and the foregn vote we see a regroupng along new lnes. The relef and the farm votes may be sad to have been held by the Presdent before, but that s not qute an accurate statement. The realgnment, n these two cases, appears to be somethng of a settlng down process. Wllke Supportert Wll Woo All Dsgruntled Democrat* From the Wllke camp, observers cannot fal to note how plans are be* ng made to gve a haven to dssatsfed Democrats. Moreover, those same plans take nto account the need for a poltcal home for that porton of the farm and labor vote whch has a desre to fnd new affuatons. t s very clear that the Roosevelt farm program has no won complete endorsement, and the Republcans have the feelng, too, that the actons of the Natonal Labor Relatons board whch surely has been nfluenced by John L. Lews and hs C.. O. have not helped the New Deal team wth Wllam Green's A. F. of L. There have been so many complants from busness men, greal and small, about the bunglng and the waste n Washngton that Mr. Wllke can be expected to hold most of that vote. He can be expected also to have whatever nfluence tha segment of natonal lfe has n persuadng workers to turn to the Republcans. And wth respect to the thrd term, already guns have begun to bark out ther mssles of crtcsm of the Roosevelt "draft" by the Chcagc conventon. They are sayng thus early that the "draft" was no draft at all; that Mr. Roosevelt carefully planned the machnery by whch he would be "drafted," and that hs release of the delegates on the eve ol the conventon votng was a gesture so panfully sour that t serves as proof of the Presdent's lack of ca pacty as a poltcan. They are chargng also that Postmaster General Farley knew there was no draft movement, except that whch the Presdent prompted, and that s why he s fadng out of poltcs and be comng a baseball club presdent. n any manner that you look on the advancng campagn, therefore, t becomes ncreasngly evdent that Mr. Roosevelt s takng the last step of a movement begun four or fve years ago. He s leadng a campagn that wll force a concluson by the voters themselves next November. At that tme, they wll have to decde whether they prefer ths naton to return to a charted course of natonal admnstraton, or whether they want to contnue nto the new felds and new methods of natons! government that have formed the keystone of the New Deal. Two Methods Of Fghtng Constpaton By DR. JAMES W. BARTON (Beleaswd by Wtttra Newspaper Unon.) M ANY persons thnk of the large bowel colon as always full of waste matter whch must be removed mmedately to prevent the po SOM n ths wastes TOflAY beng absorbed nto the blood causng such symptoms as lazness, drowsness, pans n jonts, depressed sprts, and others. As a matter of fact t s true that a "full" colon wll cause the above symptoms partly because of posons beng absorbed nto the blood, and also, as Dr. Walter Alvarez, Mayo Clnc, has ponted out, because the very weght of ths waste n colon may cause symptoms by pullng on the nerves n colon and ts supportng structures. However, nature never meant that these wastes should be vgorously pushed or flushed out by purgatve medcnes, because a colon (large bowel) that requres constant flushng out cannot reman a healthy bowel The bowel was not meant to be completely empty. The healthy bowel s able to push wastes Dr. Barton downward and out of the body by means of ts muscles. Nature gave man two methods of keepng the wastes movng down the large ntestne exercse, and rough or fbrous parts of the food. Thus all the bendng exercses, wth knees kept straght, exercse or work on the outer abdomnal muscles, whch n turn massage the muscles of the large bowel and stmulate acton. n addton, the exercse squeezes the lver whch causes an extra flow of ble nto the ntestne, and, ble s nature's purgatve. 'Roughage' Needed. The fbrous foods, whch not only rub aganst the nerve endngs of lerge bowel and stmulate bowel acton, also have somethng n them asde from the roughness, whch stmulates the bowel. Thus the easly dgested foods meat, eggs, fat, sugar, and starches do not leave enough rough or fbrous waste to stmulate bowel acton so that foods wth hard or fbrous waste n them fruts, vegetables, and cerealsmust be eaten to prevent constpaton. Nervous, hgh strung ndvduals, wth a tendency to stomach or ntestnal ulcer, must, of course, avod these rough foods. Poor Posture Cause Of Many Alments SPEAK often of the benefts ob- taned by a good posture sttng and standng wth head erect, chest out and abdomen drawn n. Ths does not mean tryng to attan the overerect poston whch s sometmes seen n mltary and other parades. Ths "forced" holdng of the erect poston not only spols the appearance but s hard on nerves and muscles because of the tenseness mantaned. Two serous thngs happen to the body wth the slouchy atttude. Frst, the stomach, ntestnes, and other abdomnal organs fall forward or downward, thus nterferng wth the dgeston of food and the removal of wastes from the lower bowel Second, the lungs are crowded because of the fallng forward of the shoulders preventng the lungs from gettng the needed ar. 6 COOL YOUR HOUSE ths easy and nexpensve way When you leave your car standng n the brolng sun all day wth the wndows tghtly shut, t DOES get hot nsde... a regular "bake-oven" temperature. But you can always cool t quckly by openng the wndows and drvng your car down the street. n just the same way, the attc of your house stores up heat on hot days, the temperature often reachng degrees or more. But you can't very well "drve your house down the street" to cool t... However, you CAN do what really amounts to ths. You can nstall an attc fan and BLOW AWAY the heat n the attc at a cost as low as $ and up (nstallaton extra). Of course, an attc fan does more than just cool the attc. After sundown, when you open all your wndows, t pulls n a flood of cool nglu ar from out-of-doors, and crculates t through the house, makng all rooms refreshngly comfortable. Dependng on the outdoor temperature, you can ofcen cool your house 7 to 4 degrees by ths method. The large, powerful bhdc; of the fan produce a complete change of ar every one or two mnutes, and the cost of operaton s only about \ c an hour. Department stores, electrcal dealers, and fan dealers wll gladly gve you full nformaton about ths low-cost method of house coolng. Stop n or telephone today. The Detrot Edson Company. The whstlng wnds that pump water for the cattle ndustry of the Texas Panhandle some day may produce natural musc as aesthetc as a Strauss waltz. Those same, near-constant wnds are beleved capable of producng natural plans' musc or Beethoven sonatas n a ggantc *"wnd organ." Ths "wnd organ" was planned for the cufeup coon try of beautful Palo Duro canyon, mles southeast of here. The dea of capturng the musc of the plans wnd was orgnated several years ago and developed by Guy A. Carlander, Amarulo archtect, untl t s now known to be an engneerng possblty. Clff to Be Carved. The wnd nstrument would be bult n the form of a small memoral dug nto the sde of the clff of the canyon. n the wall, whch would be the clff wall, slender openngs would be cut to Utlze the wnds and drafts of the canyon. Wnd would play upon the nstrument for both controlled and uncontrolled sound musc. t could furnsh power to play recorded peces or left uncontrolled to produce ts own natural melody. "The wnd produces, under certan condtons when loosed aganst proper furnture, slls, reeds, and hollow tubes, noses whch are nterestng, werd, fantastc, and at tmes, beautful n composton and sound," the orgnator sad. Techncal Aspects Studed. " have gone far enough nto the techncal and engneerng detals of ths dea to know that t can be successfully constructed and operated," Carlander sad. "t should be an unusual attracton, so dfferent as to excte the curosty of everyone." The proposed wnd organ s only one of the projects planned by Panhandle boosters who hope to see ths area rvalng the Grand canyon of Colorado as a tourst attracton. Other developments projected nclude a natural rock buldng to be known as Coronado Lodge. t would rse at the wall of the canyon. Also planned s a large amphtheater for rangeland sports ropng, bulldog* gng, and bronco bustng. Muncpal Taxes Low n Washngton State OLYMPA, WASH. Cty taxes n Washngton are nothng f not vared rangng all the way from 4 mlls down to no levy at all. The lttle town of Mlton, a suburb of Tacoma, got through the year wthout havng to levy any 94 taxes at all for muncpal purposes, realzng enough revenue from state lquor funds and other money to obvate a property tax levy. Another lttle hamlet, East Stanwood, led the state wth 4 mlls. Under the state's 4-mll tax lmtaton law ctes are allowed to levy only mlls a year, but many of them hold specal electons to approve hgher leves. The average larger-cty levy s around 6 to 8 mlls.
