Captan Abraham Rose and Angellne. h«wfe, have lost ther lttle home through Abc-'n unlucky purchase of Tena- «y Gold mnng stock. Ther household oods sold, the )100 aucton money, all fhey have left, wll place Abe n the Old Man's home, or Angy n the Old Lady's home. Both are self-sacrfcng but Abe decdes: "My dear, ths s the fust tme ve had a chance to take-the wust of t." The old couple bd good-by to the lttle house. Terror of "what folks wll say" ends them along by-paths to the gate of the Old Ladles' home. Mss Abgal, matron of the Old Ladles' home, hears/ of the ll.fortune of the old couple. She tells the other old lades, and Blossy. who has pad a double fee for the only double bedchamber, voces the unanmous verdct that Abe must be taken n wth hs wfe. he la "Old Lady No. 31." The old lades Abe awakens next mornng to fnd that E ve hm such a warm welcome that he made to feel at home at once. "Brother Abe" expands under the warm recepton of the ssters, and a regn of peace begns n \he Old Lades home. Abe s the center of the communty. The sem-annual vst of Blossy's aged lover, Capt. Samuel Darby, s due. Abe advses her to marry hm. For the frst tme the captan fals to appear. Blossy consults Abe so often regardng Darby, hs old captan n the lfe-savng servce, that gossp begnb to buzz. Aunt Nancy takes Abe to task for flrtng wth Blossy. He s much concerned when he learns that Angy s Jealous. Blossy drves away wth Darby to be marred. CHAPTER X Contnued. " told yer never could stand t here amongst all these dratted womenfolks," Abe would declare. "t's all your fault that ddn't go to the poorhouse n peace." " notce yew ddn't rase no objectons untl yew'd lved here a year," Angy would retort; but gnorng ths remark, he would go on: "t's 'Brother Abe' ths an' 'Brother Abe' that, as ef had thrty wves a-pesterln' me nstd of one. can't kll a fly but t's 'Brother Abe, lemme bury hm fer yew.' Do yer all thnk be a baby?" demanded the old gentleman wth glarng eye. " guest 'm able ter do somethln' fer myself onde n a whle. han't so old as some folks mght thnk," he contnued wth superb nconsstence. " be a mere chld compared wth that sr plagued Nancy Smth." t took very lttle to exhaust Angy's ablty for ths style of repartee, and she would rejon wth tender but mstaken efforts to soothe and comfort hm: "Thar, thar, father 1 Don't gt excted now. Seems ter me ye 're a leetle bt feversh. Ef only yew'd take ths here tansy tea." Abraham would gve one exasperated glance at the tn cup and mutter nto the depths of hs beard: "Tansy tea an' old women! Old women an' tansy teat Tansy tea be darned!" Abe faled perceptbly durng the summer, grew feebler as the autumn wnds blew n, and by November he took to hs bed and the physcan of the home, a lttle whffet of a pompous dot, was called to attend hm. The doctor, determned at the start to make a severe case of the old man's afflcton n order that he mght have the greater glory n the end, be t good or bad, looked very grave over Abraham's tongue and pulse, prescrbed medcne for every half hour, and lad ^ especal stress upon the necessty of keepng the patent n bed. "Humbug!" growled the secretly terrfed nvald, and n an excess of Bravado took he black slk neckte from where t hung on the bedpost and ted t n a bow-knot around the collar Of bt pnk-strped nghtshrt, so that ke would be n proper shape to receve any of the ssters. Then he lay very etlll, h yes closed, as they came tp. toeng n. and out Ther tongues were SB gentle tptoe too, although not so gentle but that he could hear then advsng: One, a "good, stff mustard " one, an "onon poultce;" an- "Spansh blster;" whle Aunt Nancy stopped short of nothng leas than "old-fashoned bleedng. Abe toy Tory stll and wondered f they ntent to kll hm. He was probably gong to de anyhow, so why torment sk. Only when he was dead, be feoped that they would thnk more ktetfly of hm. And so surrounded yet alone, the old man fougm hs secret untl mercfully he went to When he awoke there were the sstarn agan; and day after day they epsnt ther combned-efforts n keepng hm on bs back and forcng hm to take Ms medcne, the only apprecable resultng therefrom beng the tha wth hs tax upon ther devothe ntt lades came once more to raajard Aba as the most precous poa- eja>km of the Home. / ; "What ef he should der they whskered among thesnsehres, repentant enongb of ther late oondemnaton of htm end :ajready desohue at the th^ esrft ksny^ lttle hardh ' >.. wth them for the "great haven" over tnere; and the whsper reachng the sckroom, Abe's fever would rse, whle he could never lft hs lashes except to see the specter of helpless old age on one sde of the bed and death upon the other. "What's the matter wth me?" he demanded of the doctor, as one who would say: "Pooh! pooh! You're a humbug! What do you mean by keepng me n bed?" Yet the old man was tremblng wth that nner fear. The physcan, a femnne knd of a bearded creature hmself, took Abe's hand n hs an engagng trck he had wth the old lades. "Now, my frend, do not dstress yourself. Of course, you are a very sck man; cannot deceve you as to that; but durng my professonal career, have seen some remarkable cases of recovery and " "But what's the matter wth me?" broke n Abe, by ths tme farly whte wth fear. The doctor had assured hm that all hs organs were eound, so he could only conclude that he must have one of those unusual dseases such as Mss Abgal was readng about n the paper yesterday. Maybe, although hs legs were so thn today, he was on the verge of an attack of elephantass! "What's the matter wth me?" he repeated, hs eyes growng wlder and wlder. What the doctor really repled would be dffcult to tell; but out of the confuson of hs techncaltes Abe caught the words, "nerves" and "hystera." "Mother, yew hear that?" he cred. " got narvous hystercs. told yer somethln' would happen ter me a-comn' to ths here place. All them old woman's dseases s ketchn'. Why on 'arth ddn't yer let me go to the poorhouse?" He fell back-on the pllow and drew the bedclothes up to hs ears, whle Angy followed the doctor out nto the hall to receve, as Abe supposed, a more detaled descrpton of hs malady. He felt too weak, however, to queston Angy when ehe returned, and stubbornly kept hs eyes closed untl he heard Mrs. Homan tptoe nto the room to announce n hushed tones that Blossy and Samuel Darby were below, and Samuel wanted to know f he don't yew know that 'm a.doomed man? got the 'narcous hystercs.'" "Yew got the pp! "retorted Captan Darby contemptuously, and trottng quckly around to the Bde" of the bed, he sezed Abe by the shoulders and began to drag hm out upon the floor, cryng agan, "Gt up!" The sck man could account for ths remarkable behavor n no way except by concludng that hs old captan had, gone nto senle dementa oh, cruel, cruel afflctons that lfe brngs to old folks when lfe s almost done! Well, thought Abe, he would rather be sck and de n bs rght mnd than go crazy. He began to whmper, whereupon Samuel threw hm back upon Hs pllows n dsgust. "Cryn'! Oh, swan, he's cryn'!" Darby gave a short largh pregnant wth scorn. "Abe Rose, dew yew know what alls yew?" he demanded, fxng hs eyes fercely upon the nvald. "Dew yew'know what'u happen tew yew f yew don't gt out o' ths bed an' ths here house? Ether yer beard'll fall out an yew'11 dwndle deown ter the sze o' a baby or yew'll turn nto a downrght old woman Aunt Abraham! won't that sound nce? Or 'Em." yew'll de or yew'll go crazy. Gt out er bed " The patent shook hs head and sank back, closng hs eyes, more exhausted than ever. And he hmself had heard mght see the nvald. Angy warn ths man n a whsper not Then Abe threw off the covers n a/ to "rle hm upl" Remorselessly went hurry and sat up. "Sam'l Darby?" he asked, the strength comng back nto hs voce. "A man! Nary a woman ner a doctor! Yes yes, show hm up!" Angy nodded n responee to Mrs. Homan's glance of nqury; for had not the doctor told her that t would not hasten the end to humor the patent n any reasonable whm? And she also consented to wthdraw when Abe nformed her that he wshed to be left alone wth hs vstor, as t was so long snce he had been face to face wth a man "an' no pettcoat a-hangn' 'round the corner." "Naow, be v keerful. Cap'n Darby," the lttle mother-wfe cautoned at the door, "be very keerful. Don't stay tew long an' don't rle hm up, fer he's dretful excted. Abe s." CHAPTER X. Mental Treatment Lttle Samuel Darby paused at the foot of the bed and stared At Abe wthout sayng a word, whle Abe fxed bs dm, dstressed eyes on hs vstor wth a dumb appeal for assstance. Samuel looked a very dfferent man from the om bachelor who used, to come a-woong every sx months at the Homo. Ether marrage had brought hm a new growth of har, or else Blossy bad selected a new wg for hm a modest cloee, ron-gray whch ftted hs poll to on the rejuvenated Darby: "Han't a-goln' ter gt up, bah? Yew old mollycoddle! Yew babyl Old Lady 31! Ktty calf! But han't a-blamn' yew; ef had lved n ths here place a year an' a half, 'd he stark, starn' madl Leetle tootsewootset Gt up!" Abe had opened hs eyes and was once more starng at the other, hs mnd slowly comng to the lght of the realsaton that Samuel mght be more sane than hmself. "That's what told Angy all along," he ventured. "1 told her, says, says Pttsburgh Cleanup. Samuel took hold of hs arm and wth ths assstance the old man managed to get up entrely and stand, though shakng as f wth the palsy, upon the floor. "Feel pooty good, don't yew?" demanded Samuel, but wth less severty. "A leetle soft, a leetle soft," muttered the other. "Gmme my cane. Thar, ef one o' them women comes n the door 'll 'll " Abraham rased hs stck and shook t at the nnocent ar. "Whar's my ppe? Ms' Homan, she went an' hd t last week." After some searchng, Samuel found the ppe n Abe's hatbox underneath the old man's beaver, and produced from hs own pocket a package of tobacco, whereupon the two sat down for a quet smoke, Samuel chucklng to hmself every now and agan, Abe modestly seekng from tme to tme to cover hs bare legs wth the skrt of hs pnk-strped nlghtrobe, not darng to reach for a blanket lest Samuel should call hm names agan. Wth the very frst puff of hs ppe, the lght had come back nto the nvald's eyes; wth the second, the ashen hue completely left hs cheek; and when he had pulled the tenth tme on the ppe, Abe was ready to laugh at the ssters, the whole world, and even hmself? "Hy-guy, but t's splendd to feel lke a man ag'ln!" The wtch of Hawthorne's story never gazed more fondly at her "Feathertop" than Samuel now gazed at Abraham pullng away on hs ppe; but he determned that Abraham's fate should not be as poor "Feathertop's." Abe must reman a man. "Naow look a-here, Abe," he began after a whle, layng hs hand on the other's, knee, "dew yew knaow that yew come put' ngh gt tn' swamped n the bg breakers? There are fve Mchgan lfe nsurance companes and at the end of last year ther combned nsurance n force n the, state amounted to less than 1 per cent of the lfe nsurance carred by the sxty-seven companes from out of the state whch wrote nsurance n Mchgan. So tar as we know, the Lncoln Lfe of Fort Wayne s the frst outsde company to elect Mchgan drectors to ts board and thus lend the assurance to ts 7,600 Mchgan polcyholders that ther nterests are beng looked after on the board of drectors by bg busness men of ther pwn state. Ths move on the part of the Lncoln Lfe ought to assure Mchgan people that ther nterests are recevng careful attenton and that the company merts the entre confdence of Mchgan people. The Lncoln Lfe has over twentyone mllons of lfe nsurance n force and about eght mllons of t s on the lves of Mchgan ctzens; t s wrtng new busness n Mchgan at the rate of two mllon dollars a year and has About 40 per cent of ts entre assets nvested n Mchgan farm loans and muncpal bonds. n other words the lfe nsurance premums that have been pad on these Mchgan polces has been renvested n the state to help buld up the resources of - ^ the Mchgan people. Ths s more than any other outsde company does and t should result n a greatly ncreased Mchgan busness for ths splendd company. The Lncoln Lfe s seekng to add to ts already splendd agency force n Mchgan and should ll^e to receve applcatons from Mchgan men or women'who seek employment or desre to better ther present postons. There s no lne of work open to the person of average educaton and ablty, wthout captal or nfluence, n whch the opportuntes for accomplshng mmedate fnancal returns, buldng up a substantal ncome and attanng to a poston of mportance and promnence n the busness affars of a xommunty, are equal to the" opportuntes offered by a lfe nsurance agency. The only captal requred s clean character, a clear head, honesty of purpose, tact, enthusasm and a bg surplus of ndomtable energy and grm determnaton to succeed. Endowed wth these prerequstes the man or woman who takes up lfe nsurance, work need have no fear of falure, and f he or she wll carefully study the busness, makng the best possble use of tme and opportuntes, there are no chances on profts, as success s certan. London German troops are advancng swftly toward Ostend, hopng to capture the cty by a sudden attack and makes prsoners of Kng Albert and the Belgan government offcals, accordng to a dspatch from The Hague. Belgan, Brtsh and French armes took postons Sunday on a new battle lne southeast of Ostend for the defense of that cty and a resumpton of operatons aganst the German lnes of communcat6n n Belgum. Strong Brtsh renforcements permtted" the Belgan army to pass Ghent ntact to effect a consoldaton wth the French and Brtsh.. Ths new stand of the alles s ntended to develop nto a strong offensve, Pars dspatches say, wth a vew toward strkng at Brussels, so menace the German communcaton" through Belgum as to make t necessary for the nvaders to abandon France and once for all remove the danger of another advance toward Pars. Large numbers of troops are sad to have been sent by General Joffre to renforce the alles already before Ostend, and operatons on a large scale are expected n that regon soon. Battle Lne Lengthened. Twenty thousand Germans marchng westward met a temporary check at Quatrecht, near Wetteren, east of Ghent, at the hands of French and Brtsh troops. The French communcaton ssued Sunday afternoon deals only wth the battle, or seres of battles, whch has been n progress for four weeks from east to west n France wth an ever extendng lne, whch now reaches northward from the elbow at Noyon to and across the Belgan border at Armenteres. The statement says that the alles have held ther postons everywhere and that German cavalry, whch was attemptng to envelop the alles' left wng and had sezed certan ponts of passage on the rver Lys t to the east of Are, 20 mles from the coast, was defeated and retred to the northeast nto the ArmentlereB dstrct. Cavalry on Large Scale. At the same tme, the Germans delvered a vgorous attack on the rght bank of the Ancre rver, between Arras and the Ose, wthout makng any pro greas. Ths ndcates that the battle n Pcardy, comprsng the department of Somme and part of Ose, Pas-de-Calals and Asne, n whch the cavalry s partcpatng on a scale not seen n prevous modern wars, extends over a very consderable area. Here are many mles of open country where horsemen can maneuver wth advantage. Between the Rver Ose and Rhems, and partcularly n the regon northwest of Sossons, where the Brtsh forces are entrenched, further progress has been made. t thus seems probable tha the Germans have abandoned some of ther strongly entrenched postons n ths neghbor hood v t s reported that santary reasons have compelled ths, as the trenches n whch the troops have been lvng for weeks have become breedng places for dsease. The Germans have resumed ther nght attacks between Craonne and Rhems, whch, accordng to French accounts, have been repulsed. From Rhems to the Meuse, nothng of mportance has occurred.of late, but n the Apremont dstrct of the Woevre, to the east of St MheL the Germans made volent attacks durng the nght of October 9 and the followng day. Apremont was taken by the Germans, but was retaken by the French and remans n ther hands. The Germans apparently are determned to mantan as far as possble ther postons here, where they have perced the lne of fortfcatons between Verdun and Tou along the rver Meuse. Should they be successful aganst the lles elsewhere, ths doubtless would be the route by whch they would en deevor to enter the heart of France." Sgn Causes a Near Rot. A sgn n the wndow of a grocery store at Forty-thrd and Butler streets that sugar was sellng 25 poundd for $1.10 caused a rush of women. When the Leasowe lghthouse, England, was bult on the sandy Wlrral shore the bulders were puzzled by the lack of a sutable foundaton for the masonry tower. An ngenous way out of the dffculty was effected. n the vcnty an ncomng shp, laden wth a cargo of cotton, had gone ashore and had become a total wreck. The cotton was useless for ts ntended purpose, so the bales were salvaged and dumped nto the sand at the pont where the lghthouse was to be erected. The fleecy mass settled nto the sand and under compresson became as sold as a rock, whle ts permanency was assured by ts complete submerson. The stablty of ths strange foundaton may be gathered from the fact that the tower erected thereon stood and shed ts welcome lght regularly every nght for about a century and a half, beng extngushed only a few years ago, as t was no longer requred, Argonaut Corsca and Do Paol. The nght before the battle hs squadron was on outpost duty. Some frng had been heard, and he rode ahead of the squadron to see what was happenng, belevng that French cavalry were engaged wth the Germans close at hand. He cantered along a moonlt road untl suddenly n the shadow of some trees he found hmself n the mdst of a group of German horsemen. He had hs carbne across the neck of hs horse and fred pont blank nto the breast of a German trooper wth whose horse hs own came nto collson. The German was as quck wth hs weapon, and both men fell to the ground, the German dead, the Brtsh wth a bullet through hs hp. An nstants later the squadron came clatterng up and cut the German detachment, about thrty strong, to peces. Has 8trong Prejudce. The Brtsh dragoon has seen thngs whch have gven hm a strong prejudce aganst the enemy. n a Belgan vllage he saw the yet warm corpse of peasant woman who had been struck down by a uhlan's lance. The uhlans were rdng out of the vllage as the Brtsh rode n, and the man who klled the woman dd so because she could not or would not gve hm some bread. Once on patrol duty he came across a statonary motor car. n t were three French offcers and a lady, all dead, all sttng n the poston n whch they were when they ded. A volley had been poured nto the car. The lady's hand hung carelessly over the sde of the car, and the fngers showed marks of rngs whch had been roughly strpped off. Our cavalrymen were, he added, a good deal pestered by the enemy's aeroplanes durng the retreat from Mons..Whenever a German aeroplane appeared over a bvouac the order was gven to change camp, and weary men and horses had to move further on. One man told n a voce from whch the btterness had not yet passed of a breakfast lost n ths way. The meal almost assumed the proportons of a feast Two geese and three hens he and hs mates had prepared for themselves, and just when they were ready to take them from the fre the enemy appeared n force, and the breakfast had not only to be abandoned, but to be abandoned to the Germans. Tureos Best Patents. Of all the patents the best, say the doctors, are the Tureos. There t no lmt to the pan they can endure. Yesterday afternoon the parade of two standards captured from the enemy was accepted by Parsans as a good augury for the success of ther arms. The number of French prests servng wth the colors s a good deal larger than has been magned, and t s stated authortatvely today that as many at 19,000 prests are enrolled as combatants. The departure of the cardnal archbshop of Malnes from the Gare St. Lazare gave rse last nght to a pcturesque scene. The archbshop was fully robed, and stood on the platform surrounded by a large crowd of prests and others who hare sympathsed keenly wth the Belgans n ther struggle. As the tran left the staton be stood n the carrage bowng to those on the platform an aseeto fgure of the Rcheleu type, a mal of domnant personalty, wth a charm of pose and expresson that made one realze how keenly hs work s apprecated by hs countrymen n Belgum. Lest of Horses Appallng. The Wastage of horses durng the present war has admttedly been appallng. At the St. Lasare termnus today met a general wth some 200 me of the Nnth French dragoons. They, had no horses left and had come to pck up softs at present watng n Hrla. They were then takng an coward-bound tran as far as Chatoan Therry. On one occason the Germans n consderable force tred to enter a town occuped by Brtsh troops. One Scottsh detachment was entrusted wth the task of checkng the advancng Germans tll the Englsh troops succeeded n retrng n good order. They took up a poston n the frst house n the town. The Germans drected a volent fre upon the houses, whch soon threatened to bury the defenders under ther runs. The German attack slackened, and the Scots realzed that the enemy was preparng to take up a stll better poston. Durng the lull a Scottsh sergeant who occuped a grocery, dscovered on the shelves several packets of chocolate, and turnng to hs men told them, "'ll gve a bar of chocolate to every man who klls a German." When the attack was resumed the sergeant gravely proceeded to dstrbute the promsed rewards. Show Great Bravery. One prvate sad: "The Frenchman s badly placed, let'b wden hs trench" and durng a mnute, payng no attenton to, the hal or bullets and shrapnel, the prvates deepened the trench, and wth the same calm resumed ther places. The correspondent adds that the bravery of the Englsh s truly admrable. Although they had suffered heavly, the Englsh never flnched an nstant when nformed that one of ther best unts had just been annhlated. They remaned slent for a few Beconds and then answered, wth wonderful determnaton: "Never mnd. One day we wll have the best of t" Every newspaper s anxous to pay trbute to Brtsh bravery and prowess. J0; Only One More Week There were just lots of people who do not take the Dspatch, and there are just lots of others yet. Votes have beeu eomng n by the thousands almost every day, and now the days of the contest are very lmted. Next week Frday s the last day and soon after 3 p. m. of that day the wnner of the pnno wll be known. You shotfld realze ths, and ever you should ntend to wn a thng, uow s the tme. Some contestants, have sad they do not want the contest to close so soon. They have had several months n whch to ple up votes for just ths crss. Procrastnaton n ths contest may have lost the pano for some one, two or three contestants. Ths race may end lke that of the hare and tortose, perseverance often wns. You stll have tme yet to get lots and lots of votes. But remember, you wll not have the chance agan. Do you fnlly realze that a $400 pano s to be gven to the contestant havng the largest number of votes next week Frday? Why, you are lettng them have t wth just a lttle work! t would be fun to make them race for t anyway; but you are content to st by peacefully and watch some one else get the prze whle one of your very best frends could perhaps have won wth your help. But yon cannot realze the beauty of the prze untl you see some one else wth t, t seems. Perhaps you beleve the wrter "s just tryngto scare you for hs own proft, but that s not so, and next week Frday you are sure to see the soundness of advce that has been prnted rght here from tme to tme. Now you've come to the place where t s ether pck up or get out. Are you gong to wn? f not, why'areyou tryng? True, people are gong tobe.satsfed wth the merchants pres, because they are worth gettng and any amount of work. f you would be frst, then you must work for more votes.
