1 The Lodge 693 Trestleboard October 2014 Greetings Brethren: from the east palmspringsmasons.org october 2014 Looking back on our activities on September 9 th we had the honor of having our Grand Master Most Worshipful Brother John Cooper III at Palm Springs Lodge #693 to present Brother David Lyons the 75 year pin. It was a great event with the participation of many Brethren from the surrounding area. At the time I was still in Austria and could take part in the whole ceremony via Skype. I sent a congratulations clip I had recorded in my garden in Austria which was shown that evening. That evening, Brother Lyons presented a check for $7500 to Palm Springs Lodge #693. Thank you very much Brother Lyons for your generous donation. 3 from the south Masonic thoughts from the South: The Entered Apprentice, having not yet perfected himself in Masonry, is symbolized by the Rough Ashlar which, fresh from the quarry, has not been smoothed by the Master Builder. Then there is the Perfect Ashlar: a stone of true square, which can only be defined as true by the square and compasses. This represents the mind of a man at the close of life, after a wellregulated career of piety and virtue, which can only be tried by the square of God's Word and the compasses of an approving conscience. In the Lodge we always see two Ashlars. One rough and one smooth. This may make it easy to miss the idea that we each own only one ashlar which is neither totally rough nor smooth. For me, the obvious question is, what is the current state of my ashlar and am I applying my Masonic tools to its improvement? Masonry suggests that we, on a regular basis, take some quiet time to reflect on the state of our ashlars and the possible application of the Masonic tools with which we are taught. I will stop right there, as this happens to be a good time for me to go find my hammer and chisel and see if I can knock off a couple of rough edges. Best regards to all from the South. 4 Brother David Lyons Presented 75 Year Pin at Lodge 693 It was a special evening as Lodge 693 was filled with Masons and non-masons as 100 year old Brother David Lyons was presented with his 75 Year Pin. Grand Master Most Worshipful John Cooper III came to Palm Springs to make the presentation. During the evening s ceremony, Brother Lyons surprised us all when he presented Lodge 693 with a check for $7500. An extraordinary act of generosity! Congratulations and thank you, Brother Lyons, for the opportunity to share this great Masonic moment! Junior Warden Don Ryals, on behalf of Lodge 693, accepts this generous donation from 75-Year pin recipient Brother David Lyons. Lodge 693 s Brother Kurt Handshuh to Receive Hiram Award on October 28th One of the busiest Brothers in Freemasonry, our Brother Kurt Handshuh, will receive the prestigious Hiram Award October 28th at 6:00 PM. It s an award given for exceptional dedication and service to Masonry and the Lodge. There ll be a special Fettucine Alfredo and Grilled Shrimp Dinner following the presentation. Details at Tuesday Oct 21st 7:30PM: 3rd Degree Brother David Mariner Dinner served from 6:00PM Tuesday Oct 28th 6:00 PM: Hiram Award Presentation to Brother Kurt Handshuh Dinner following the presentation Our Condolences to Brother Dave Berg......on the passing of his beloved wife, Millie. A lot of us had the pleasure of knowing the delightful Millie, as she was often present at Lodge, Valley, and Shrine dinners and events. On October 6th, Brothers, friends and family members attended a beautiful, loving celebration of Millie s life at Wiefel s in Palm Springs. Our thoughts and prayers are with our Brother Dave and his family. 5

6 On September 25th Palm Springs Lodge Officers joined the Officers of Yucca Valley Lodge #802 and Oasis of Mara Lodge #735 to perform the Second Section of the 3rd Degree for Brother Matthew Harris (member of Yucca Valley Lodge #802) at Yucca Valley Lodge #802. It was a nice and beautiful fraternal evening. Brother Matthew Harris 3 rd Degree in Yucca Valley Thanks to everybody for your great degree work at these degrees. On September 21 st our Inspector Worshipful Brother Jim Ridley PM, our Junior Warden Brother Don Ryals with his wife Lailah, our Secretary Brother Oscar Rodriguez, our Marshal Brother Robert Jacob, General Roger Rothrock, Brother Alan Franks and I took part at the 14 th Annual California Masonic Symposium at the Scottish Rite Temple in Pasadena, where we met with The Grand Lodge Officers with Grand Master Most Worshipful John Cooper III, with Deputy Grand Master Right Worshipful Russ Charvonia, with Senior Grand Warden Right Worshipful David Perry and with Junior Grand Warden Right Worshipful John Heissner. 6 continued next page

9 The next Annual Communication at the Grand Lodge of California takes place from October 10 th 12 th, I wish all the attending officers a great time in San Francisco GRAND LODGE LEGISLATION CARRY-OVER LEGISLATION FROM 2013 RESOLUTION NO : PERMITS THE OFFICERS COACH TO USE THE CIPHER IN A TILED MEETING To permit the Officers Coach to use the approved cipher ritual in a tiled meeting. RESOLUTION NO : REQUIRES THE WARDEN COLUMNS TO REMAIN IN PLACE WHILE LODGE IS FREE FROM RESTRAINT To change the Ritual to allow the Wardens columns are to remain in the position indicating the lodge is at labor while it is free from restraint. RESOLUTION NO : CREATES GUIDELINES FOR LIFE MEMBERSHIP INSTALLMENT PAYMENTS To allow, and establish rules for, the purchase of a life membership on an installment basis. RESOLUTION NO : CREATES PROCEDURES TO AUTHORIZE CEMETERY INTERMENT To clarify that the Charity Committee of the Lodge may authorize the use of a Lodge s cemetery property for the interment of an eligible Mason or family member. RESOLUTION NO : CREATES PROCEDURES TO AUTHORIZE FUNERAL EXPENSES To clarify that the Charity Committee of the Lodge may authorize the payment of funeral expenses of an eligible Mason or family member. RESOLUTION NO : EXEMPTS VALLEY LODGE NO. 135 FROM THE REQUIREMENT OF MAJORITY HALL ASSOCIATION OWNERSHIP To exempt Valley Lodge No. 135 from the requirement that it own its interest in its Masonic Hall through a corporation in which it has majority control. RESOLUTION NO : MODIFIES MINIMUM DUES To modify the minimum dues of a Lodge. RESOLUTION NO : MODIFIES MINIMUM FEE FOR DEGREES To modify the minimum Fee for Degrees. 9 RESOLUTIONS FOR 2014 RESOLUTION NO : CLARIFIES THE GRAND MASTER S RIGHT TO REVIEW A TRIAL DISMISSAL To clarify the Grand Master s right to review and reinstate a trial dismissal. RESOLUTION NO : MAKES A CORRECTION TO RESOLUTION To correct Resolution by excluding members present who are not in good standing from the count of the members required for the lodge to act. RESOLUTION NO : ALLOWS DUES BASED ON THE LODGE S BUDGET To allow Lodges to use the same system to determine their dues for upcoming Masonic year as does the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge, F&A.M. of California. continued next page

RESOLUTION NO : STANDARDIZES CANDIDATES COACHING PROGRAM To standardize the candidates coaching program. RESOLUTION NO : MODIFIES RULES ON PERSONALLY IDENTIFYING INFORMATION To make the rules on personally identifying information an opt out rule. RESOLUTION NO : MODIFIES PROCEDURES APPLICABLE TO GRAND LODGE REVIEW OF TRIALS To add notifications to involved parties when additional material is filed with the Committee on Trial Review and when the Committee recommends any change in the verdict or penalty. RESOLUTION NO : EXPANDS PERMITTED FUND RAISING BY MASONIC ORGANIZATIONS To expand the fund-raising activities allowed Masonic Organizations. RESOLUTION NO : EXPANDS PERMITTED FUND-RAISING BY MASONIC ORGANIZATIONS To allow Masonic Organizations to raise funds for fraternal purposes through raffles, lotteries and bingo games conducted in accordance with state, local and federal laws. RESOLUTION NO : PROVIDES A $1.00 PER CAPITA ASSESSMENT FOR GEORGE WASHINGTON MASONIC NATIONAL MEMORIAL To provide a permanent per capita assessment of $1.00 per Mason for the support of George Washington Masonic National Memorial. RESOLUTION NO : ALLOWS BUSINESS IN ANY DEGREE UNLESS AN ENTERED APPRENTICE OR FELLOW CRAFT IS PRESENT To allow for the conduct of Lodge business in any degree unless an Entered Apprentice or Fellow Craft is present. RESOLUTION NO : ALLOWS ENTERED APPRENTICES AND FELLOW CRAFTS TO JOIN RESEARCH LODGES To allow Entered Apprentices and Fellow Crafts to join Research Lodges. RESOLUTION NO : ADDS A GRAND HISTORIAN To add a Grand Historian as an additional Grand Lodge Officer. RESOLUTION NO : RESTORATION OF ANTRANIK JABOURIAN TO MASONIC MEMBERSHIP To restore Antranik Jabourian to membership in Masonry. RESOLUTION NO : PERMITS USE OF THE CANDIDATE LEARNING CENTER To permit use of the Candidate Learning Center to complete the Basic Masonic Education Course in the degrees. RESOLUTION NO : CLARIFIES DUTIES OF LODGE SECRETARY AND TREASURER To define clearly the differences in reporting duties of the Secretary and Treasurer for the Annual and Semi-Annual Reports to the Lodge. 10 continued next page
