As you probably know the clubhouse at Kingwood Country Club flooded during hurricane Harvey and they don t expect to have it operational until possibly mid Pat Maher, our club VP, has secured The Overlook in Atascocita for our December luncheon. The facility looks very nice and they were able to accommodate us at the holiday. So program your GPS to the address listed in the column to the right, and we ll look forward to seeing you there! By now some of our club members are happily cruising on the 15-day Panama Canal Island Princess cruise, which left October 12 th. Happy sailing to those participants. Our Program Committee has been busy planning events for Upcoming outings include a breakfast at Brennan s Restaurant in November; a trip to the Federal Reserve Bank in January; and the Liberty Opry in February. Our DEEDS submission for 2017 is listed on page 5 of this newsletter. It is important to note as you complete this form and mail it in you can also log your hours where you volunteered in hurricane Harvey relief efforts through a qualifying organization. With many of our members affected by floodwaters, I am sure many of you have provided assistance in this way. Don t forget our club s 2018 MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL FORM found on page 9. We also received notice that Patricia Klein, wife of Kenneth Klein, passed away on July 27 th. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Kenneth and his family. 3 BREAKFAST AT BRENNAN S + IMAX THEATRE Tuesday, November 14, 2017 On Tuesday, November 14 th we will travel to Brennan's for breakfast. The sign-up deadline is Monday, November 6 th. The cost is $41.00 per person, inclusive of taxes and gratuity. The menu is listed on our website: Get your coupons in early, as this is a popular event! As we have been able to reserve only the Solarium, seating will be limited to 40 guests. The coupon has a box to check if you intend to drive to Brennan s. Dress code at Brennan s is business casual therefore shorts, flip-flops or sneakers are not allowed. Ladies are advised that the dining rooms may be chilly. IMPORTANT NOTE: There will be no refunds for this event, as Brennan s has a cancellation policy. If we have a wait list, we will use that to accommodate your need to cancel from the event. Our Precinct 4 bus will leave from the Kingwood Methodist Church Outreach Center parking lot at 8:00 a.m. Following the IMAX theater show we will return to Kingwood. For more information, please contact Bruce Gunther at or gungun@aol.com. CHRISTMAS THE OVERLOOK Tuesday, December 12, 2017 Don t miss the Club s annual Christmas luncheon held at The Overlook. It is an elegant southern-style special events venue located right in the heart of the Atascocita, Humble and Kingwood communities at Pinehurst Drive in Atascocita. The beautifully designed facility is filled with southern plantation charm, and is located on a gorgeous 22-acre green space filled with walking trails, ponds and woods. The Overlook is a gem unlike any other location you ll find in the greater Houston area. This year we look forward to welcoming the Madrigal Singers from Atascocita High School. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m., with a social hour beginning at 10:45 a.m. Each family unit will select a gift at time of registration. But to keep things interesting, there will also be a drawing for a select number of special door prizes. Make plans now to attend! SOCIETY OF SAINT STEPHEN (SOSS) SOSS is a Community Outreach facility, serving people in Humble, New Caney and Splendora School Districts. From the beginning of the ExxonMobil Retiree Club of Lake Houston, we have collected toys and food for Christmas baskets and gifts for these families and children. Please be as generous this year and thank you for your support. Please bring children s toy/game (unwrapped) and non-perishable food to the Christmas luncheon. Page 3 of 10

4 FEDERAL RESERVE BANK + LUNCH Thursday, January 11, 2018 On January 11 th we will travel to 1801 Allen Parkway for our tour of the Federal Reserve Bank. The Houston Branch was established to more effectively provide Federal Reserve services to Houston and surrounding areas of south and southeast Texas. The tour generally lasts about 1½ hours and includes in the Visitor s Center displays of historic currency, counterfeit money, a gold bar, and various informative panels. A ten-minute video details the purposes and functions of the Fed. A highlight will be touring the Cash function where we show how currency is received, processed, paid out and shredded. Each guest will get a free sample! Afterward we will enjoy lunch at St. Arnold s Brewery. Lunch will be on our own and we will order off their lunch menu. They will provide a table for 30 persons, and extra seating is available for overflow. A private tour of the brewery will follow after lunch and the cost is $6.00 per person. Please note: closed-toe shoes are required for this trip. LIBERTY OPRY Saturday, February 10, Saturday, February 10 th we will visit the Liberty Opry. It is centrally located between Houston and Beaumont at 1816 Sam Houston St., Liberty, Texas and provides the best live, musical entertainment. They will feature a variety of music including country, 50s, and love songs. The Liberty Opry shows take place in the beautiful, historic Park Theater, which was built in 1938 and operated as a movie theater for many years. It was renovated to its current condition in the early 2000s. The Precinct 4 bus will leave the Kingwood Methodist Outreach Center parking lot at 1:30 p.m. A late lunch will be at each person s expense either at the theatre café (salads, sandwiches, et al) or at other places within walking distance. The show starts at 4:00 p.m. and finishes by 7:00 p.m. We should be back to Kingwood by 8:00 p.m. Send in your coupon with payment of $15.00 per person by February 1. 5 DEEDS The purpose of the DEEDS program is to encourage retirees, their spouses and surviving spouses to volunteer their energies into charitable community activities. To be recognized as a participant in this program, fifty volunteer hours or more are required per participant. The DEEDS program recognizes those that volunteer their time to charitable, social welfare, health, civic, medical, literary, educational and cultural organizations. Service provided to religious or political groups are excluded except to the extent a church program provides charitable services to the community beyond its membership, such as the Society of St. Stephen or hurricane Harvey relief efforts through a qualifying organization. It s that time of the year again when we will report on our DEEDS work for The Club has been very fortunate in that many members participate in a lot of diverse activities that benefit others. If you have volunteered on an activity during the past year, we want to hear about who you volunteered with and the number of hours devoted to those activities. Many of us work on several different activities, so report on them all so that you, the Club and ExxonMobil can get proper credit for them.
