1 Pont s Ponderings The Pontoppidan Lutheran Church Newsletter Proclaiming the Gospel! Living In Christ! Caring for Our Neighbors! Sept.-Oct Special Congregational Meeting Sunday, September 9, 2018, the members of Pontoppidan Lutheran Church will meet for the purpose of deciding whether or not to call a pastor. The candidate who will be considered comes with a recommendation for Call to the congregation by the Call Committee and has been affirmed by the Parish Planning Council. The meeting will have two items on the agenda: 1) to discuss and vote on a recommendation to call the identified candidate (whose name and biography will be revealed at the meeting); 2) and, if the recommendation to Call is approved, to discuss and vote on the recommended compensation package. Your presence at this meeting is vitally important. Please remember this day and the process in your devotions, prayers and private times. 2 From Pastor Luther Anderson As children begin returning to school, meeting new teachers and making new friends (one sure sign that summer is soon over), you Pontoppidan are also facing new beginnings: with the possibility of a new pastor; and with revised curriculum plans for Sunday Church School. This is an important and good time for you in your mission as people who love and follow Jesus. I trust that you will be paying it forward with your expectations and involvement in the many ways that Pontoppidan can be an important presence in downtown Fargo. A recommendation: to seriously talk with the people of the other congregations downtown to learn how each is making their presence known and inviting and meaningful to the residents (nearly 10,000!) and visitors alike. Ministry in downtown Fargo should be a combined effort of planning and sharing, as each of you folks in the surrounding churches recognize the opportunities and needs for mutual and cooperative actions. Personally, I am thankful for the months we have been able to be in mission together. Thank you for your partnership in the Gospel. God s Peace! Pastor Luther Anderson WELCA News Respectfully submitted by Marlys Davis, WELCA President Mobilizing Women to Act BOLDLY on Their Faith in Jesus Christ All women of Pontoppidan are invited to our WELCA meetings. We have many programs ready for the next year and look forward to your attendance which is usually held on the 1 st Tuesday of the month. This is a wonderful time to get to know members of our church, a time for learning through devotions and speakers, special entertainment and finally a time of fellowship! Hope to see you! Bring a friend! Information regarding WELCA board members, WELCA events, stewardship projects, circle members, and service groups is found in the booklet that was mailed to each family earlier this month. Tuesday, September 4 th : Our first meeting of WELCA will be at 7:00 pm in the Living room. Erica Johnsrud, the Development Director of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Red River Valley will be our guest speaker. She will share with us the mission of the organization and how they support and care for families whose children are receiving medical care in the FM area. The RMH is in need of Lysol Clean & Fresh All Purpose Cleaner, Pour Bottle. This will be our in-kind offering for this month. Saturday, September 22 nd : Here I am, Lord! The 31 st Annual Convention of the Eastern North Dakota WELCA will be at Red Willow Bible Camp near Binford, ND. More information is available on the WELCA bulletin board in fellowship hall. Tuesday, September, 28 th : All women of Pontoppidan are invited to join a circle. Three circles meet at 1:30 and one circle meets at 7:00 pm at the church each month. This is a great time to study the Bible and have fellowship with other women in our church. You are all welcome! Contact the office or a board member for more information. Tuesday, October 2 nd : WELCA 7 pm in the Living Room: What is Hospital Chaplaincy What is Involved? Bruce Nelson, a Chaplain at Sanford, will give us insight to Chaplaincy in a hospital setting. 2

3 Caring for our Neighbors Respectfully submitted by Vicky Anderson, WELCA Stewardship Proverbs 14:31 He who opposes the poor shows contempt for their maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God. Lutheran World Relief School Kits are being wrapped and almost ready to ship. Thank you to all who have donated, sewn bags, wrapped the supplies in bags, and boxed them. Our wonderful transport volunteers will be taking them to the collection site soon. If you wish, there is still time to contribute supplies to the blue bin near the church office or to make a monetary donation. Churches United for the Homeless always welcomes financial support to purchase current needs their residents may have. In addition they can use size 4 and 5 disposable diapers, baby wipes, formula, shower shoes, new underwear, coffee, Tums, adult Tylenol, and nail clippers. Donations may be placed in the grocery cart. Thank you for your continuous support for those in need. Library Corner Greetings everyone! I hope you have been enjoying your summer with a great book! First of all I want to thank the Card Makers; this is a delightful group of women. They purchased and donated two chairs to the Library. There has been a need there for years. They saw that need and met it. They are a hard working and talented group. I know they need help, if anyone is interested. I hope to see this group continuing this Fall! In October we think of the New Life Center and collect warm socks, mittens and gloves, as well as caps and hats for the colder days ahead. Our transport volunteers will be taking the school kits, bath size soap, and quilts for delivery to ship them across the seas to our far-off friends in need. Thank you for your generous support and strong arms to move it from our basement. Watch for those boxes to pile up downstairs under the coat rack. Its amazing how many we collect twice each year to send a message of care and concern others experiencing great trials. At 7:00 on September 4th, Erica Johnsrud will be sharing her story of her work at the Ronald McDonald House in Fargo. One need we can meet, is by bringing a bottle(s) of Lysol Clean & Fresh multisurface Cleaner-Lemon and Sunflower for her to bring back to the facility. What a wonderful way for us to help keep it fresh and healthy for the families with hospitalized children. Thank you Pont family for your continuous support! Deuteronomy 15:10 Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. I will be putting in a new book order soon using the memorials the Library received in memory of my Mom, Sara Anderson. I am grateful for those. She loved books even more than me, if that is possible! I have been working in the Library to make it easier to find books. The fiction is completed. I will be working on the non-fiction this Fall. I also appreciate donations for the Little Library. That has been used a lot this summer!!! Grab a book and start an adventure! Sandy Cegla Pontoppidan Librarian 3

5 GREETINGS FROM PONT SUNDAY SCHOOL!!!!! I sure hope your summer made for some amazing memories with your families and friends. Sunday School is going to have a bit of new look to its programming this school year. I was able to host a couple of informal gatherings with parents and last year s teachers this summer to obtain feedback on enhancing and growing our Sunday School. AMAZING conversations and ideas were gathered!! It is with great excitement and enthusiasm I share the details with each of you. Sunday School will begin on September 30 th at 9:15am & concluding at 9:50am. Worship remains at 10:00am. Why the late start date?? It gives our families time to adjust to the school year and it gives our lake families time to squeak out the last of the relaxing sunshine. Why the time change? During the focus groups, informal conversations and survey, parents told us they would prefer getting done with SS earlier so they have more family time for lunches, birthday parties and the extracurricular activities in our growing and changing world. Other FUN stuff: We are going to offer a small breakfast bar with juice or milk as kids join us on Sunday mornings. We will have a weekly greeter waiting for our Sunday School families to provide that snack to your child and if you have basic questions there to answer and direct you. We will have a coffee / donut area for you to enjoy other parents and share in the fellowship, gospel and just good ole parenting conversations. Our Advent Program (a.k.a The Christmas Program) will be earlier this year to accommodate your busy hustle with the holidays. It will be December 2 nd at our 10am Worship Service, mark your calendar now! September 30 th will also become our new Rally Sunday filled with many opportunities for all ages! Thank you for your support and excitement! Blessings as WE continue to Grow in Faith! Kim Stromberg 5

Ray played that horn over 75 years ago while in high school, college, and even in the Navy. When he no longer played it, his daughter Julie played it in junior high, high school, and one year in college. We tried to interest the grandchildren, but the horn returned to our house. Ray decided to give it to the church, hoping that someone would enjoy playing it as much as he. He was thrilled to know that Charlie played it and would have loved to hear that old horn being played at his funeral. Thanks, Charlie! And thank you, dear friends, for the many prayers, cards, gifts, and attendance at the services. Also to Pastor Anderson, Sue, volunteers, and especially the men who served and did dishes along with the faithful WELCA ladies. Blessings, Bev Hubbard 10
