By your grace adopt us as your children and enlighten us with your Spirit, through Jesus Christ, our Redeemer and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen December 11 3rd Sunday in Advent 9 am Advent Worship w/holy Communion 10:15 am Sunday School A Christmas Dinner Prayer Dear Heavenly Father, 4th Sunday in Advent 9 am Advent / GIFT Worship w/holy Communion Love brought Jesus to the earth, and love brings us to this Christmas table. Today as we share this holiday feast, may we also share with one another a joyful heart and a warm smile. May our Christmas dinner be filled with kindness. And may the memories of today warm our hearts for years to come. 2 Reflection Prepare the Way These are the words and the actions that we will be exploring throughout the Advent season in our Sunday worship. John the Baptist echoed the cry of the prophets, saying, See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Mark 1:2 When I read this today, these are my questions: what is the way of the Lord? What are the paths which need to be made straight for him, and what has made them crooked? Whose voice am I listening to in the wilderness? What are your questions? And where do they lead you? My questions led me to some memories. I grew up at the end of a long, winding gravel road and every winter I revisit the memories of walking a crooked quarter-milelong path through snow and ice (yes, it really was uphill both ways!) to get to the school bus stop. Every morning we would prepare, in the dark, putting on mittens, scarves, hats and boots. Sometimes on those crispy cold mornings one of us six kids would be running late because of a missing homework assignment, mitten, scarf, hat or boot. Then we would hear the honking of the school bus horn as we ran through the squeaky-cold snow to catch it. It never left without us though! Sometimes our trusty bus driver drove most of a mile down the gravel road to get to us, and we would see the headlights in the dark morning illuminating the hills and sigh with relief, knowing that even though we weren t quite prepared, we didn t miss the bus. Sometimes I think that our preparing the way of the Lord might have something in common with those sparkling, crystal-clear, cold Wisconsin mornings. We may feel that we re missing something in our preparation to be God s people to love God and one another. And we usually are unprepared in some way we haven t forgiven each other, we forget what we have learned about loving God and others, or we decide to honor some source of power other than God but the bus doesn t leave without us. The voice still cries out to us just as that loud-honking bus horn did in that valley in Wisconsin: Prepare. Examine your lives. Find the places that are not quite straight, walk humbly along the path and allow Jesus love to be born in your life, to save and to change you. Make a beeline for your Lord, because he is making a beeline for you! You may be breathless at the end of the journey, but even if it s a cold, dark morning in your soul: there will be light. You re not going to miss the bus, if you just stay on the path. Your Savior is on his way. Merry Christmas! --Pastor Beth And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father s only son, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 2
