2 From Pastor Doug We enter a new year! A few items as we begin Fellowship Hall remodeling will be completed in February! Thanks to many of you giving so generously this past year, and thanks to a gift from the Paul and Marguerite Pratt estate, the project is now fully funded. The carpet will be installed in time for the season of Lent. Paul and Marguerite Pratt bestowed to Pontoppidan through their estate a $50,000 gift. Part will be used to finish the Fellowship Hall project. The rest will be kept for Repairs and Maintenance. Paul was a fixer type of man. His family wished to give money so that when Pontoppidan had a need for repairs and improvements, some seed money would be available. The Youth Group s Annual Meatball Supper! The Meatball Supper and Silent Auction has become a tradition we look forward to every year. In the coldest part of the year we gather for a warm meal. The Meatball Supper this year is Sunday, January 29, with serving beginning at 4:30 pm. We will also have our Silent Auction Sale. If you would like to prepare a basket for the Silent Auction please contact Lisa Vig. There have been some pretty creative gifts these past years! Thank you to the Youth for making the meatballs and serving them each year. Thank you for putting this fellowship event on your calendars. Lent begins Wednesday, March 1. That seems like a long way away, but we have already met once to plan for this year s Lenten Series. This year we need disciples. 12 of them. Men and women. Included in this Newsletter is a description of each of the 12 disciples. If you read a description and think, I would like to be that disciple, then please volunteer. Contact Ken Lepper and he will give you the details of what the disciples will be doing. Don t be anxious! It is manageable. The January Tri Annual Meeting is January 15 at 12:15 pm. All members are requested to come and vote on the annual budget. Have a blessed beginning to this new year. 2

3 Lent 2017: The 12 Disciples of Jesus Peter Without question, the Apostle Peter was a "duh"-ciple most of us can identify with. One minute he was walking on water by faith, and the next he was sinking in doubts. He was impulsive and emotional. Peter was often a spokesperson for the twelve. Andrew The Apostle Andrew left John the Baptist to become the first follower of Jesus of Nazareth. But John did not mind. Like many of us, Andrew lived in the shadow of his more famous sibling, Simon Peter. Andrew led Peter to Christ, then stepped into the background as his boisterous brother became a leader among the apostles and in the early Church. James James the son of Zebedee, often called James the Greater to distinguish him from the other apostle named James, was a member of Jesus Christ's inner circle, which included his brother, John. and Peter. Not only did James and John earn a special nickname from the Lord "sons of thunder" they were privileged to be at three supernatural events in the life of Christ. John The Apostle John, brother to James, was nicknamed by Jesus one of the "sons of thunder," but he liked to call himself "the disciple whom Jesus loved." With his fiery temperament and special devotion to the Savior, he gained a favored place in Christ's inner circle. On the first Easter morning, John raced Peter to the tomb after Mary Magdalene reported that it was empty. Although John won the race, he humbly allowed Peter to enter the tomb first. Philip Philip was one of the first followers of Jesus. He wasted no time in calling others, like Nathanael, to do the same. Philip was searching for truth. Nathanael or Bartholomew When Philip called Nathanael to come and meet the Messiah, Nathanael was skeptical. As Philip introduced him to Jesus, the Lord declared, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false." Immediately Nathanael wanted to know, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you." Shocked and surprised he declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." Matthew Levi, who became the Apostle Matthew, was a customs official in Capernaum who taxed imports and exports based on his own judgment. The Jews hated him because he worked for Rome. But when Matthew the tax collector heard the two words from Jesus, "Follow me," he left everything and obeyed. Like us, he longed to be accepted and loved. Thomas Thomas is often referred to as "Doubting Thomas" because he refused to believe that Jesus had risen from the dead until he saw and touched Christ's physical wounds. Thomas, like us, was prone to extremes. Earlier he had demonstrated courageous faith, willing to risk his own life to follow Jesus into Judea. 3

4 James the Less James the Less is one of the most obscure apostles in the Bible. The only things we know for certain are his name and that he was present in the upper room of Jerusalem after Christ ascended to heaven. Author John MacArthur suggests that his obscurity may have been the distinguishing mark of his life. Simon the Zealot Simon the Zealot is sometimes called the Bible's mystery apostle. Scripture tells us almost nothing about Simon. In the Gospels, he is mentioned in three places, but only to list his name. It is significant, though, that Jesus called someone to follow who was known as a Zealot. Thaddeus or Jude Listed with Simon the Zealot and James the Less, this apostle completes a grouping of the least known disciples. John MacArthur suggests that Thaddeus, also known as Jude, was tenderhearted; a gentle man who displayed childlike humility. The short letter of Jude in the Bible closes with an amazing doxology. One of the finest expressions of praise to God in the New Testament. Judas Iscariot Judas Iscariot is the apostle who betrayed his Master with a kiss. For this supreme act of treachery, some would say Judas Iscariot made the greatest error in history. Some writers experience a sense of hatred toward Judas, others feel pity. 4

5 WELCA News The Love Brunch will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2017 in Fellowship Hall at 10:00 am.
