5 St. Thomas, the Apostle of Wisdom, Courage and Faith Fr. Dr. Reji Mathew St. Thomas the Apostle of India possesses a distinctive place among the twelve disciples of Jesus for his interventions during the ministry of Jesus and for his adventurous mission in India. Even though we get scanty information regarding him in the Gospels those few references give us a good picture about him. The two ancient books named after him are the Gospel of Thomas and the Acts of Thomas. The former is a Gnostic work with the beginning: secret sayings that the Living Jesus and Didymus Judas Thomas recorded. It contains a lot of sayings of Jesus, which are comparable with the materials of the canonical Gospels. The latter tell us more about his missionary works in India; the famous story of Thomas and King Gondophoros is a part of it. The references to St. Thomas in the works of early Christian writers like Origen, Eusebius of Caesarea and St. Ephrem connect Vol him 12/2018 to the Christians of India. In a fifth century document called the Passing of Mary or Dormition of the Theotokos Thomas is said to be the only Apostle who witnessed the Assumption of Mary. In Matthew and Mark his name appears along with St. Matthew whereas in the post-resurrection event of Jn 21 he is numbered as the second disciple of Jesus just after the name of Peter. His Aramaic name Thomas is translated as Didymus in Greek which means Twin in English. Jesus called him as one among whom he liked and Thomas followed him without asking anything. The evangelist Mark tells us clearly the intention of the calling of the Disciples (Mk 15-3:14); a) they might be with Jesus, b) they might be sent for preaching, and c) they might have power to heal the sick and to cast out demons. In the account of the appearance of Jesus after his resurrection Thomas has a tremendous role. Here we do not see all the twelve disciples; only seven are there and Thomas stands as second to Peter. In Acts 1:13 we see Thomas as a leader of the Early Church along with the ten and St. Mary, the mother of Jesus. He was there when Matthias was elected as a substitute for Judas Iscariot. b) Thomas as an adventurous companion of Jesus (Jn 11:16) When Lazarus of Bethany was seriously ill Jesus was visiting the disciples of John the Baptist in the region beyond the river Jordan (Jn 40;10). The fanatic Jews of Judea, the southern province, tried to attack him during his last visit to the Temple of Jerusalem. They surrounded him (Jn 10:24) and tried to stone him (Jn 34-10:32); Jesus had a narrow escape only (Jn 10:39). Therefore, when Jesus wanted to go to Bethany for visiting his best friend Lazarus at his death bed the disciples discouraged him by saying; a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back? (Jn 11:8). By this time the news came that Lazarus died already and the disciples found the journey of Jesus as unnecessary and avoidable. But seeing that Jesus wanted to visit his diseased friend at any cost, Thomas strengthened the others by saying: Let us also go, that we may die with him (Jn 16;11). This extra-ordinary braveness is a mark of Thomas always. c)thomas as a curious student of Jesus (Jn 5-14:1) Jesus was delivering his last discourse before his death and he told the disciples I go to prepare a place to you you know the way to the place where I am going (jn 4-14:2). Immediately Thomas replied: Lord, we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way? (Jn 14:5). Many people consider this as a demerit of Thomas. But if we check the dialogues of great teachers like Socrates and Plato we find that the people who ask questions are the best and bright students. They ask questions not because of their ignorance but because of their enthusiasm and inquisitiveness; it may help the teacher explain things with clarity and vividness and it will help the less intelligent students more than the person who raised the question. Every teacher likes such students in his class; to sit simply by attending a lecture without reflection and curiosity is a black mark for the students. Why St. Thomas chose India as his mission field? I strongly believe that this thirst for wisdom was the driving force behind his adventurous journey to India through the roaring waves of the Arabian Sea. India was a land of people with inquisitiveness right from the beginning and it was known all around the world. We had teachers and philosophers who raised extra-ordinary questions about God, the origin of the universe and the existence of human beings. Thus came the Vedas and Upanishads. St. Thomas might have wanted to meet these people and to make a dialogue with these stalwarts of thoughts. His God-Talk and dialogues brought many to Jesus Christ as His disciples. d) Doubting Thomas? Or, Thomas, the Custodian of Faith? (Jn 29-20:24) When Jesus appeared to the disciples after the resurrection Thomas was absent in the community. An interesting question at this point would be: Where was Thomas at this time? 6 closed room with the doors locked for the fear of Jewish leaders (Jn 20:19). Did he start his mission then with his adventurous mind? We do not know. Anyway, when the other disciples reported him about the appearance of the risen Lord he replied: unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe (Jn 20:25). Many people caricature Thomas as a disciple of unbelief on this basis and they call him the doubting Thomas. It is true that some of the disciples had unbelief about the resurrection of Jesus. In the Gospel according to Matthew we read the following: When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted (Mtt 28:17). Again Luke narrates the story of the journey of two disciples to Emmaus after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. Luke says that Jesus found these disciples with their faces downcast (Lk 24:17) and he asks them how foolish you are and how slow to believe (Lk 24:25). All these indicate that there were some among the disciples who had doubts about the resurrected Christ. Let us come back to the story of Thomas. We have to watch the following incident closely before making a judgment about him. Jesus appeared a second time when Thomas was there and Jesus said Put your finger here, see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side (Jn 20:27). Surprisingly, Thomas did not do what he wanted to do and he declared immediately: My Lord and My God (Jn 20:28). This is a moment of the confession of the Faith of the Early Church and what Thomas said is one of the earliest creeds of the Church. The Nicene Creed developed out of such broken sayings and confessions. e) Thomas as the First World Missionary of Jesus (Acts 26-6 :1) Thomas was there when Jesus commissioned his disciples before his ascension and when the eleven disciples elected Matthias as the twelfth one. The resurrected Christ asked his disciples to become his witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the Ends of the Earth. Jerusalem is the home or the mother place, Judea is the immediate neighbor (within Judaism), Samaria is the gentile neighborhood where Samaritans lived. By the usage Ends of the Earth most of the disciples understood the four corners of the Roman Empire, which was their known world. St. Thomas is the only Apostle who crossed the boundaries of the Empire and he reached India in 52 CE. We should highlight this aspect duly; the Church in India is an Apostolic Church and the Gospel reached there much earlier than it reached some of the European countries which claim to be Christian countries. Russia, which is famous for the most number of Christians got the Gospel about 1000 years after India got it. All the ancient writers who mention St.Thomas remembers his mission in India. So, as a Church which is almost as old as the Jerusalem Church, the Indian Christians have to thank God for choosing the land for his mission and maintain our ancient Christian values. 7 St. Joseph Righteous Man of God Compiled by Catharine Elza Shibu St. Joseph is one of the forgotten Saints in Orthodox Church. He is also not a popular Saint when it comes to naming Churches, schools or institutions after him in our Church. The second Sunday before Christmas dedicated to remembering the Revelation to Joseph. St. Joseph was the guardian head of the Holy Family. Little is mentioned in the Holy Bible about Joseph. No spoken word of Joseph has ever been recorded. We only have record of him, to what he did and not what he said. We know him by what he did. THE GUARDIAN FATHER OF JESUS Venerated as a Saint by many Christians, St. Joseph is a biblical figure has been the corporeal father of Jesus Christ. Joseph first appears in the bible in the Gospel of Mathew and Luke; In Mathew, Joseph s lineage is traced back to King David, the greatest king of Israel (Matt. :1 16-1; St. Lk :3). Everything we know about St. Joseph the husband of Mary, and the foster father of Jesus comes from the Bible and mentions of him are under whelming. The 14 New Testament Epistles by Paul make no reference to him at all nor does the Gospel of Mark, the first of the Gospel. St. Joseph was obedient to God s words. He was the foster father of Christ and obeyed the commandments of God. He lived in Nazareth (Lk. 2:4) and was a carpenter (Matt. 55 :13). The voice said, that one of the staffs would bloom forth with flowers and that the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, would land upon the staff. Joseph was one of the men who came and when he placed his staff in the sanctuary, next morning it bloomed and a dove descended from heaven and landed on it, thus revealing that Joseph was to take virgin Mary as his spouse. This selection was done with the help of the Holy spirit and that why pictures of St. Joseph reveals a flowering rod. ANGEL GABRIEL APPEARED TO JOSEPH ON FOUR OCCASIONS 1. Angel Gabriel appeared to Joseph in a dream and he said, Take Mary home as your wife. When Joseph woke up, he did as the Angel commanded him. (Matt. 18 :1 25). 2. The Angel had another message for Joseph Go to Egypt Herod searches for Jesus to kill Him, lest Jesus become the king instead of him. Joseph was warned in a dream, in which angel Gabriel tells him to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt. They left immediately and did not come back until the angel told him to do so. (Matt :2) 3. JOSEPH Obedient and Courageous He was the Wise and faithful servant, whom the Lord had put in charge of his household and who, with obedient docility, accepted the will of the Lord completely in the eyes of faith since God s plan for his life went beyond human understanding. St. Joseph was a man of obedience; he never questioned what was asked of him. St. Joseph accepted everything the angel told him and vowed that he would take care of St. Mary. St. Joseph accepted God s commandments of marrying Mary and to be the foster father of Jesus Christ and to take care of them from enemies who aimed at the life of baby Jesus. St. Joseph was a humble, courageous servant of God. The term righteous sums up Joseph s life perfectly. Whatever God asks of him and whenever He asks it, Joseph does it. JOSEPH Righteous and Just Joseph is almost silent throughout the Gospels. Nonetheless, our Gospel offers a description of Joseph that is admirable that he was a "righteous man." Joseph was an upright Jew, faithful to the sacred law and lived by that law in good example. Before the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph to reveal God s will for him, Joseph was determined to avoid denouncing his wife in public. In this audience that took part in the Solemnity of St. Joseph, servant of God. St. Joseph was indeed full of faith because he openly submitted himself obediently accepted what he had longed to see but had not seen and longed to hear but had not heard until he was privileged to see and hear when God chose to reveal it to him. St. Matthew 19 :1, states that Joseph was a just man in tune with the will of God In this season of Advent, let us look at the inspiring example of St Joseph the Righteous. Let us serve the Infant Christ in obedience and love especially opening our hearts and arms to those who are weak, helpless, vulnerable, displaced. On this note, we should remember with thanksgiving the role of our fathers and grandfathers in our life. They quietly toiled for their family, for their children s future without letting know of the hardships faced by them. We should also remember with gratitude our spiritual fathers who toil for us with their prayers.
