4 SECRETARY S REPORT Dear friends, "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned" (Isaiah 9:2). On this day, our gross attention is again directed to the new light of hope that had inspired many generations of Christians right from the first century after Christ. While we celebrate Christmas day as a day of joy and happiness, it should well be remembered that this has become possible because the Cradle in the Manger had led to the Cross where Christ dies for sinners. The revelation of God's love and the self-emptying Christ are a challenge for all of us. How do we respond to the Christmas event? The Carol Singing has already started and surely, the whole of December will be quite hectic with programmes one after the other leading to Christmas/Year End/New Year Services. All sub-organisations are gearing up to arrange their anniversary celebrations. The Annual Thanksgi hanksgivin ving Service is arranged on the 7th December with a combined Communion service and lunch for all participants. Every family is earnestly requested to attend this service and be blessed. Those with academic achievements and those who have been elevated to higher positions in service will be felicitated on this occasion. Rev. Dr. D.J. Ajithkumar, Presbyter, Diocese of Phulbani, Church of North India has kindly consented to be our guest for the day. Noel Fiesta 2014 is arranged on the 13th and 14th of December, The entire proceeds will be utilised for infrastructure development and vault construction in our Cemetery. Do participate enthusiastically and contribute liberally for this cause. The Combined Christmas Carol Service of our Church is arranged to be held on Sunday 21st December, This will be an occasion when all sub-organisations of our Church will join together to make this a joyful event. 2 N v thmbnkv Unkw_ 2014

20 FRUIT OF REPENTANCE Luke 3:7-14 A changed life style accompanies repentance. This world is radical transforming and total. It is one definite sign that God has worked in our hearts. Things that attracted us before failed to attract us now. Things for which we spent most of time, do not crave our attention now. Our friendships and relationships chaged for the better. Our values now keep in tune with that of heaven. This is a true repentance. Though this is true repentance there are many do not think much of producing fruit in keeping with repentance. But Jesus has repeatedly emphasized the importance of producing fruits in keeping with repentence in His teachings. Producing fruits worthy of repentence means that repentence should made known through our actions. This should reflect in our attitude towards fellow human being, caring little ones and acts of kindness. A kind word, a note of encouragement a smile when it is needed most, a timely help are small but significant ways in which we can make the sun shine for others when their days are cloudy. We are God's children, and we know that He loves us dearly. His word tells us over and over. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him shouldnot perish, but have everlasting life (John.3:16). St. Paul wrote: 'Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us. (Eph.5:1,2). We must live upto the desires of our Father for His children. We are then urged to 'live a life of love'. We must love God with all our being. The Christian life is characterized by love. We must not only love those who love us, but we are to love others also, even our enemies. The great example of love is Jesus Christ. The world has never seen love like this. Jesus loved us so much that He died a gruesome death on the cross, in order to save us from eternal damnation. Love and sacrifice must become a part of our living. Our love stands at the top of the list, of what God needs and wants from us. Are we really living a 'life of love?' 21 Childhood I was born in a Christian family on 14th October 1961, in Trivandrum, Kerala State. My parents are the late Mr. Ben J. Titus (father) and Mrs. Winsome Titus (mother), who are members of MM Church. My mother, who is a devout follower of Jesus (now she is 87 years by His grace), prayed even while I was in her womb, entrusting each part of my life to Jesus' care, even though she did not know whether I would be a boy or a girl. Since the day I was born she kept singing praise songs of Jesus to put me to sleep and to make me play while I was awake. She kept telling me the true Bible stories of the faithful characters of the Bible, and kept repeating who Jesus is and how He is the Saviour of all mankind, all throughout my infant years and childhood. While I was 2 to 3 years old, I used to get very high fever leading to delirium and fits with froth and bubble coming out of my mouth, and going to an unconscious state. In the state of high fever I used to call out loudly to my mother to sing her favourite song 'Jesus Saviour pilot me'. Even though I did not know who really Jesus is at that time, I knew that He is the God who loves me and whom my dear mother had known personally by experience. Since the last 32 years I personally know Him, my Lord Jesus, and I serve Him, and He is truly the Pilot of my life in the boisterous ocean of this world, till I reach the heavenly shore. Formati mative year ears Years passed by in school and college, and I was regular in church, Sunday School and VBS. I respected teachers and parents though I was a very naughty youngster. I used to read the Bible, and was acquainted and fascinated with the missionary biographies as well. My Dad used to correct me and discipline me whenever needed. I also knew Jesus as the true God, but had never surrendered my life to Him. From my 17th year onwards I was convicted in my heart that I was a miserable sinner within myself, and I needed the loving touch of my Saviour Jesus to forgive me and heal me. 22 conviction grew that I was a miserable sinner, and ultimately when I completed my 21st year, and was entering my post graduate studies (October - November 1982), my Lord Jesus miraculously touched my life and I repented and completely gave my life to Him in whole hearted surrender. That's the beginning of my new life in Christ. Since then my Lord Jesus became Lord of my life, and His Holy Spirit kept prompting me about the unconfessed sins in my life, and I received forgiveness in each area of my life. God's Call In November 1982, my Lord Jesus gave me His word as a motto in my life, 'A life not to be served but to serve, and be a blessing to many', based on Mark 10: 45. Though I did not understand the full implications of His word to me, I knew that I would serve Him in some way. From my 17th year to my 23rd year I was a good sportsman, and in my 23rd year I got my post-graduate degree, and I was on the lookout for a good job and career in life. In January 1985, again my Lord touched me and called me to go out as a full time missionary. I joyfully received the call in obedience and was ready to go out in that call. But in the same month my Lord made me understand that I was not ready for His task and that I needed His preparation, and then I waited on Him for ten and a half years ( January 1985 to June 1995). Nine years out of this, I worked as a Management Executive in various capacities in the Travancore Rubber and Tea Company Limited, in Kerala, and I stood as a witness of Christ Jesus in a very secular environment led by prominent Brahmins. I gained the confidence of the Directors and General Manager, and the supervisory staff and work force of nearly 5,000 regular and temporary labourers and families. There were many tough assignments given to me to control violent labour situations; and finish tasks of large proportions in a short period of time; and in all this I want to give all the glory to my Lord Jesus, who helped me with His constant presence and strengthened me to fulfill His will and prepare me for His task ahead. One step ahead In the midst of all this I was waiting and asking my Lord when He would call me out to go for His task. My Lord always answered, "Be in the place where I have placed you now." Then in June 1994 He led me to apply to IEM, and in May 1995 I resigned from the job and went for the cross-cultural missionary training in OTI in June During this period He gave me the clear call to go and serve the Lahauli people in 20 N v thmbnkv Unkw_ 2014

23 Himachal Pradesh, who are native of District Lahaul & Spiti, bordering China and Tibet in the great Himalayas. I shared this with the Mission leaders and they encouraged me, as IEM leaders were praying for 24 years to send full time missionaries into Lahaul. In the fourth month of the training I was diagnosed with very high blood pressure, and was asked by Dr. Diana to go for a thorough check up in December 1995 after my training. Later in the check up it was found that I had Mitral Valve prolapse in the heart; had a minor heart attack in the recent past; Asthma; ten times more Eosinophilea; and joint pains. As I was weak and and in tears asking my Lord why this has happened to me as I was on the threshold of entering His service, He answered me that He was sending me not in my strength but in His grace. Divine direction That settled everything and I pressed on to present my medical report to my Mission leaders in January 1996, at the Missionaries' Triennial Conference, in Hyderabad. My leaders and doctors in our Mission were distressed and they told me that they would not take the risk to send me to a place like Lahaul where medical help will be limited and scarce. They said that I needed to go to a place where I could be medically examined every month. I requested them to send me to the place where God wants me to go, and not to send me on medical considerations, where I may not survive. After four months of prayer and deliberations my leaders decided to send me to the Lahauli people in the great Himalayan range in northern most Himachal Pradesh. Enabling and empowerin ering God I always keep praising my Lord Jesus who has kept me these last 18 and a half years in good health and strength, in spite of my weakness. Not even one day has He allowed me to be in bed to say that I would not be able to go for work that day, Hallelujah!!! He has, and is sustaining me with His all embracing grace which never fails, and I'm sure that still He will continue to sustain me till I fulfill His will among the dear Lahauli people. I have covered more than 5,300 kilometres on foot on the Himalayas to visit the villages and meet my Lahauli contact families during summer all these years. Villages are situated at 7,000 feet to 14,000 feet above sea level, where oxygen is also less. I have spent a severe winter inside Lahaul for 7 months in , in a highly elevated village of 10,700 feet, where the temperature is less than minus 20 degrees celsius, and had a wonderful ministry within the snow covered N v thmbnkv Unkw_ We we

24 Himalayas. But my Lord Jesus is faithful and He is able to complete what He has started in me, and His grace is sufficient for me. On the 1st January 2015, I will by His grace complete 19 years in the service of my Lord Jesus through Indian Evangelical Mission, and He is able to sustain me and lead me on to overcome my limitations and unworthiness, and bring praise to His holy name. Amen. In all these years my Lord Jesus has enabled me to witness for Him among 468 Lahauli families repeatedly, and I have shared His precious Gospel to more than thousand Lahaulis (individuals), which I still continue to do. Along with this He is enabling me to share His Gospel to scores of Kulluvis, Nepalis and other permanent settlers in Kullu valley. This is His unlimited grace towards me - to an unworthy servant of His, but precious in His sight, Hallelujah!!! From May 2014 I am pastoring two congregations (HINDI and NEPALI) in Christ Church, Kullu, planted by IEM in We have 48 families (192 individuals) here and the Church is slowly growing. Patrona onage e of my y home Church I praise God and am grateful to all God's people, including some leaders and colleagues in IEM, and my dear Sunday School Teachers - Rev. Sundar Jacob, Dr. Samuel Das, Dr. Samson Nessiah, Dr. Christenson Sarasam and others who have invested in me and prayed much for me to see me grow in His service and glorify Him. As a whole I honour the MM Church, which is my mother Church through which I was brought up, and the investment it has made in my life to finally serve God's Kingdom. My mother Church has played it's part in my spiritual growth in the past and is currently supporting me both by prayer and finance through IEM. My dear mother is consciously still praying for me, and her life is a great encouragement for me. The Amritsar Diocese of the Church of North India (CNI), has come forward to ordain me at the rcommendation of Indian Evangelical Mission (IEM) on 7th December 2014 in Amritsar in recognition of my 18 and a half years of evangelistic and pastoral service in North India, and for the demanding ministry opportunities in the North and other parts of India. 27 Controversy in the use of Cooking Oils Dr. Thilaga Samson Fatty acids are obtained from hydrolysis of oils. Saturated fatty acids are divided into lower fatty acids, eg., acetic acid and butyric acid. Milk fat contains significant amount of butyric acid. Higher fatty acids eg., palmitic acid and stearic acid are found in vegetable oils. Coconut oil contains monounsaturated fatty acids like oleic acid. Groundnut or peanut oil contains polyunsaturated fatty acids like linoleic and linolenic acids and arachidonic acid. Linseed oil, soyabean oil and liver also contain these fatty acids. These three acids are called as "Essential fatty acids", as they cannot be synthesised in the body. Arachidonic acid is the precursor of prostaglandins and leuko trienes. They are the precursors of structural elements of tissues, gonads and mitochondrial membrane. Fats or oils with high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids lowers the serum level of cholesterol. It prolongs the clotting time. Deficiency produces fatty liver. Hence essential fatty acid containing oils like gingelly oil, groundnut oil, sunflower oil, soyabean oil, egg yolk, fish, and liver and fish liver oil should be included in the diet. We Keralites like the taste of coconut oil. As per the advise of the experts we can use 50% coconut oil and 50% ground nut or gingelly oil. We can take whole egg with yellow once in a while. Cholesterol lowering effect of unsaturated fatty acids. Increased intake of fats and oils in the diet increases the level of cholesterol. Greater amount of saturated fatty acids increase s cholesterol level. Substitution in the diet of saturated fatty acids containing foods like butter, ghee, dalda, vanaspathy, beef fat and coconut oil by polyunsaturated fatty acid containing foods like groundnut oil, gingelly oil, sunflower oil and cotton seed oil has beneficial effect and lowers cholesterol level.
