2 Message from the Chaplain Blessed is she who believed (Luke 1:44) P A G E 2 Elizabeth exclaimed blessed is she who believed when the Blessed Virgin Mary visited her. Mary believed everything that the angel of the Lord told her. Being a virgin and being betrothed to Joseph, Mary had doubts about how all these would be fulfilled, yet she believed. Fr Joy Thottamkara CSsR Chaplain, Syro Malabar Catholic Mission This year we are celebrating The Year of Faith from October 2012 to November The year of Faith commemorates the 50 th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. Pope John XXIII (now Blessed John XXIII) the initiator of the council, preferred to call the Council a new Pentecost. It was his dearest hope that the Council would be a new springtime in the life of the Church. John XXIII was obviously a man who trusted deeply in God. Pope John was 81 years of age when he called the Council on 11 th October At the time of its opening session, Pope John was a sick man, with cancer. He died on 3 rd June the following year. He saw himself essentially as a pastor, as a shepherd, who wanted to bring everyone with his embrace. We know now, that the Council changed catholic life in a drastic way. Year of Faith (October 2012 to November 2013) For us this is a time to rekindle the faith that we have received at our baptism. We have had solemn inauguration of the Year of Faith with the Divine Bible Convention led by Rev Fr. George Panackal. The convention has been a blessing for all of us. We listened to the word of God and received God s healing touch. Congratulation to all of who you made use of this won-derful opportunity. As we all know, October is the month of rosary and devotion to Mother Mary. The age old saying is A family that prays together stays together. Our Konthanamaskaram and feast celebration is another occasion to receive the blessing of God through the intercession of Blessed Virgin Mary. As migrants or pravasis in this land, we have to face many challenges. Material blessings should increase our faith ; but very often the contrary happens. So the biggest challenge is the challenge against faith. Let us seek the protec-tion of the Blessed Virgin Mary by praying the rosary so that we may be a blessing to the people around us. 3 PARISH FEAST CELEBRATIONS P A G E 3 This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it (Psalms 118:24) The Syro Malabar Catholic Mission Auckland celebrated its annual feast on October 21st 2012 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish, Epsom, Auckland. The Church is dedicated to Our Mother of Perpetual Help and plays a vital role in the spiritual growth of the Syro Malabar Community in New Zealand along with preserving and encouraging the cultural and liturgical identity of the community. As part of the feast celebrations, a two day retreat on October 4th and 5th was held. It was conducted by the renowned Divine Retreat Team led by Rev Father George Panackal VC. The retreat attracted thousands of people across New Zealand. The church also held Kontha Namaskaram along with Holy Qurbana, Solemn Rosary & Novena to Mother of Perpetual Help from October 11th to October 20th. Each day of the rosary was led by individual family prayer units. Special prayers were offered for the special intentions of individual families and people reiterated their faith and devotion to Mother Mary. On the auspicious occasion of the Parish Feast, on October 21st, the Holy Qurbana was followed by Cultural Programme and Agape (Snehavirunnu). The Sunday School Students and parishioners put up an impressive performance and showcased their talents. The Main Celebrant and Chief Guest of the day was Most Reverend Patrick Dunn, the Bishop of Auckland. The co-celebrants were Msgr Patrick Ward, Fr Peter Brown C.Ss.R, Fr Joseph Zacharias Cor Episcopa of the Orthodox Church, Fr Verghese VC, Fr Seejo CMI and Fr Joy Thottamkara C.Ss.R, the Parish Priest. The Parish Committee, Sunday School Staff and Students along with Family Prayer Units and parishioners under the eminent leadership of Fr Joy worked together to ensure that the feast was celebrated with great pomp and glory. Many people took part in the celebrations and received the grace of Our Mother.

4 THE APOSTLES OF JESUS P A G E 4 This is a brief outline about the life and missionary zeal of the Apostles of Jesus. The year 4 students (Albin, Clement, Manuel, Igin, Jovel, Sherwin, Athira and George) of the Sunday School have joined hands to compile this article for you. As we all know, Jesus had 12 Apostles. They are: Simon (Peter), Andrew; James (Son of Zebedee), John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James (Son of Alphaeus), Jude (Thaddaeus), Simon (The Zealot) and Matthias (who replaced Judas) In addition to the twelve apostles, the Bible depicts some ardent followers of Jesus who were as zealous as the 12 apostles in spreading the Kingdom of God. They are: St Paul, St Barnabas, St Luke and St Mark. Apostle Simon Peter Apostle Peter was born in Betsaida (in Galilee,) By profession, he was a fisherman until he followed Jesus. So firm was Peter's faith that Jesus gave him the name of Cephas meaning rock. Peter is recorded more than any other disciple in the bible. He was at Jesus side at the Transfiguration, the raising of Jairus daughter, and the Agony of the Garden of Gethsemane. He played a major role in the events of the Passion. Although he denied Jesus three times during Jesus journey to crucifixion, he repented and became a even more firm believer ready to lay down his life for Jesus. It was Peter who preached to the masses in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost. He was crucified upside down by Emperor Nero while in Rome. Apostle Andrew Andrew was the brother of Simon Peter and was a fisherman. He was at first the disciple of John the Baptist and when John pointed to Jesus as the Lamb of God, Andrew followed Jesus. Andrew went to Greece to preach the gospel. He is said to have been martyred by crucifixion at the city of Patras (Patræ) in Achaea He is said to have been put to death on a cross, to which he was tied, not nailed. He lived two days in that state of suffering, still preaching the message of Jesus to the people who gathered around him.

5 PAGE 5 Apostle James (Son of Zebedee) Apostle James was the eldest brother of Apostle John. He is known as St James the Greater because there was another younger apostle by the same name. James, his brother John, Peter and Andrew were all partners in the fishing business before being called by Jesus. James was a prominent disciple and witnessed Jesus raising Jairus s daughter, was present at the time of Transfiguration of Jesus and at the Garden of Gethsmane (agony at the Garden). Apostle James is the patron of labourers and his feast day is on July 25th. Apostle John St John, the son of Zebedee and the brother of Apostle James the Greater was called by Jesus to be his disciple. John soon became Jesus beloved disciple. He was the only disciple who did not forsake Jesus at the hour of his passion. John stood faithfully below the crucifix and Jesus entrusted John with his mother Mary. He is the author of Gospel by John and the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. He is the only disciple who is believed to have not been martyred and lived up to the age of 100 years. Apostle Philip Christian traditions describe, Philip, as the apostle who preached in Greece, Syria and Phrygia. He was born in Bethsaida in Galilee. Philip was a prominent disciple of Jesus and Bible records him being present at the miracle of loaves and fish. According to belief, he was crucified at Hierapolis during the reign of Emperor Domitian. Philip figures most prominently in the Gospel of John. His feast day is on May 3rd. Apostle Bartholomew Apostle Bartholomew was introduced to Jesus through Apostle Philip as per the Gospel of John (John 1: 43-51). He is referred to as Nathaniel and mentioned as Nathaniel of Cana in Galilee (John 21:2). It is believed that Apostle Bartholomew, in the company of Apostle Philip, went to Asia Minor and laboured in Hierapolis near Turkey.

6 PAGE 6 Apostle Thomas Apostle Thomas is also known as Didymus or Twin. By trade, he was a fisherman until called by Jesus. He is best known for his role in verifying the resurrection of the Lord. His unwillingness to believe that the other apostles had seen the risen Lord earned him the title of Doubting Thomas. However, once he became convinced of the resurrection of the Lord he exclaimed, My God and my Lord thus making a public profession of his faith. He is known as the Apostle of India for preaching the gospel in India and attained martyrdom in India. His feast day is on July 3rd. Apostle Mathew Apostle Mathew was also called Levi. By profession, he was a tax collector before being called by Jesus. It was while sitting at a tax collector s place at Capernaum that Jesus called Mathew to be his disciple. Mathew was a gifted writer, an ardent disciple and perhaps the most educated of the 12 Apostles. He is the author of the Gospel by Mathew in the New Testament. Apostle James (The Son of Alphaeus) Apostle James also called James the Less was the younger brother of Apostle Mathew. He is the author of the first Catholic Epistle. According to the Catholic Tradition, he was the first Bishop of Jerusalem and was given the title of James the Just. Apostle Jude (Thadaaeus) Apostle Jude is believed to be from the Jewish tribe of Judah. After the ascension of Jesus, Jude was one of the first disciples believed to have left to a foreign land to preach the gospel. Jude is believed to have evangelized the area of Armenia, Syria and northern Persia and said to have been martyred there. He is the author of the epistle to the Churches of the East and is the patron saint for desperate cases. His feast is celebrated on October 28th.

7 R A I N B O W S M C M P A G E 7 Apostle Simon (The Zealot) Apostle Simon (the Zealot) was surname as the Zealot for his rigid adherence to the Jewish and Cannanite law. The real beauty of this apostle s life lies in the fact that he was so actively zealous but yet remained unknown that Christ alone was known and remembered. To distinguish him from Simon Peter, he was called Kannanois or Kannanite. Apostle Matthias Apostle Matthias was chosen to take the place of Judas of Kerioth after his betrayal of Jesus. It is believed that the apostles prayed and cast lots to discover the will of God and Matthias was thus chosen. He along with apostles Jude, Bartholomew, Simon the Zealot are credited by the Armenian tradition as the apostles who evangelized Armenia. St Paul Saul of Tarsus aka Paul was not of the twelve apostles but a later convert. He is known as the Apostle of the Gentiles. The epistles written by him form a considerable part of the New Testament. Prior to his conversion, Paul was involved in the persecution of the early Christians. It was on his journey to Damascus to persecute the Christians that Jesus appeared to him and he was struck blind by the light. Three days later, his eyesight was restored by Ananias of Damascus and he began to preach the Kingdom of God. He suffered martyrdom in Rome and was beheaded by a sword by Emperor Nero. St Barnabas Although not of the original twelve, Barnabas was referred to an apostle by the early church. Barnabas along with Paul was ordained and undertook their first missionary journey to Antioch. St Barnabas journey was mainly confined to Cyprus and Asian Minor. He is believed to have suffered death in Cyprus.

8 P A G E 8 PAGE 8 St Luke St Luke, the author of Gospel by Luke in the New Testament was a physician by trade. His writings make it very clear that he was a very learned man. He is said to have been a constant companion of St Paul. Luke s gospel shows special sensitivity to the evangelization of the Gentiles. He is the patron saint for physicians and surgeons. St Mark St Mark was the nephew of St Barnabas and was an important figure during the Apostolic age. He is the author of the Gospel by Mark in the New Testament; St Paul being the source of his Gospel. It is believed that after the death of St Peter and St Paul, Mark left for Alexandria, a Greco Roman City with a large jewish population and was martyred there. His feast day is celebrated on April 25 and he is the patron saint for notaries. We start with Anu Varghese and Family: Anu, a native of Changanacherry, Kerala came to NZ in Since then he has been actively involved in the service of the parish. He was the catechism teacher to year 10 students and played a pivotal role in the conduct of the Annual Bible Quiz and Sunday School Activities. Through this issue, Anu shares his life experiences and how God miraculously intervened in his life giving him the zeal to move ahead in life. Let this serve as an inspiration to all of us to be firm in our faith.

14 GOD IS GOOD - ALL THE TIME Yes. I would say All the time- God is good. God is good all the time. I come from a traditional Catholic family and was actively involved in the parish activities during my school and university years. I served as an altar boy for 14 years, was part of the choir group and served as the Secretary of Changanacherry Arch Diocese Yuva Deepthi (KCYM) in After finishing my M.Com Degree, without any struggle I got a job as a teacher at St. Mary s Inter College, Etwah, UP, a Catholic Mission School, which I believe was the grace of God. I could organize a charismatic prayer group, propagate the word of God and inspire my friends and co-workers. From there, my God chose me to teach in Botswana, a Southern African Country. When I received that offer, I did not even have the passport; however, many people helped and within ten days, I got the passport. I worked as a teacher at a place called Bobonong, 500kms from the capital city. There was no regular English church service there; so, I used to travel 80kms every Sunday to the nearest town called Selebi Phikwe to attend mass. Then, my friends and I started to pray with the result that regular English services were started in the church at Bobonong. I could inspire my students to attend church regularly. Until that time, some of them had not even heard of the Catholic Church. With the mercy of the living God, I got promoted as the Head of the Department of Business Subjects, a post usually reserved for the locals. In 2004, the Great God chose Sneha as my wife and blessed us with two sons; Alex and Anton. I came to New Zealand in Initially, I struggled to find a job but with the blessings of my ever living God, I soon landed in a job. My wife and I worked for the Auckland District Health Board. Moreover, I got the wonderful opportunity to teach catechism for year 10 students at the Syro Malabar Catholic Mission, Auckland. In a country like NZ, catechism studies in the Syro Malabar system are of great help for the younger generation to grow in God s love. Now, we are moving to Australia and believe that God will take care of us. I firmly believe whatever I have gained in my life is because of the abundant blessings of my God. For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope Jeremiah 29:11. Yes, our loving God is always good. One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast to her brunette head.
