4 From the Presbyter s desk Theme of the year Pastoral Ministry in the urban context Sub Theme- Enabling the congregation to bear witness. Dearly beloved one in Christ, At the very outset of the year, I would like to greet you in the mighty and wonderful name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We have celebrated Christmas with joy and in its reverance. Let us all be greatful to Him for sustaining as althrough Let us also pray for another wonderful and promising New Year May God bless and keep us as a faithful community of believers. Golden verse of the month: 'Now faith is the substance (assurance) of things hoped for, the evidence (a conviction) of things not seen.' (Heb. 11:1) "hnizmkw F txm Bin p Xns Dd pw ImWmØ ImcyßfpsS \n bhpw BIp p.' (F{_m. 11:1) Faith is the essence of Christian life. We usually affirm our faith in our worship services. The eternal father has given Himself to 'redeem' the universe from sin and to have eternal life. St.John says, 'for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life' (John. 3:16). Faith and belief are co-related words. We, His disciples could believe in Him and have faith. Jesus responds must have surprised the faith community, for he emphatically affirmed the faith of women who had great faith - 'O women, great is thy faith' (Matthew. 15:28). Faith is internal while belief is external expression of faith. In other words, belief is the outcome of faith. St. Paul says that, faith is the substance which gives hope to the unseen things (Heb. 11:1). The nature of the kingdom is such that even an ordinary woman or a man find his/her place in it by the power of healing. Humans have an attraction for the blessings from the Almighty. The creator has created each and everybody in the community, to receive eternal life as well as the blessings of the life in this world. The believers are called to serve as a paradigm for the conduct of others in this community. All humans are equally precious to Jesus and this picture of tender touch on the persons who are experiencing the love of God in their life has become an emblem of sharing the gospel and humanitarian efforts of the Church through the demonstration of faith in life. 2

5 God gives encouragement to the people by giving rewards to faithful one. For to everyone who has will to work by faith, will be given more by the faithfulness of our Holy and loving God. Such is the wonder of this kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Hence we are called out of darkness into His marvellous light to reconcile the perishing world with the faith in Christ. Moreover, the Church is called and equipped to proclaim our faith in Christ all through our journey towards eternal goal. Epistle to the Hebrews is an anonymous letter, traditionally believed to have written by Paul and infact is rejected by Luther and other Protestants. Some modern theologians say - it is written by Luke, nothing the style of the letter. Eventhough the authorship of this letter is unknown, this is written to the Hebrew Christians in Italy. The high priesthood of Christ, is much higher than that of Moses, prophets and angels. The epistle deals with five important instructions. 1. Christ is superior to prophets and angels (1-2) 2. Christ is greater than Moses (3-4) 3. The high priesthood of Christ (5-10:18) 4. Faith - exemplified in Old Testament (10:19-12) 5. Admonitions (ch. 13) The concluding verse is a benediction to your faith journey 'May God's grace be with you all' (13:25). With such a hope and guidance let us enter into this New Year God will enable and equip you to work for God through our Church activities, through its various organizations and fellowships. Epiphany and week of prayer January 6th is the day of ephiphany. This helps us to remember the revelation of Christ to everybody in this world. From 5th to 11th of January, we observe the prayer week for the blessings of new year. St.Paul, the Apostle's conversion happened on January 25th, who then laboured for Christ with a definite vision he had received from the God. Let us also commit our lives too. On 26th January, our nation celebrates its 64th anniversary as a republic. Let us thank God for our constitution and work for the building of our nation as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic which can uphold and safeguard the needs of everyone in our country. On behalf of the ministerial team of our Church along with the families of the presbyters, I am happy to wish you a blessed and happy new year. Let us recount the blessings that our Lord has graciously bestowed upon us all throughout last year and praise him. Prepare to receive the choicest blessings in this new year. 6 SECRETARY S REPORT Dear friends, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you" (James 4:8). What a comfort to know that God is always with us - Why do we sometimes try to tread alone in life when at every moment, we have access to our Saviour? God said: "I am with you and will help you wherever you go" (Gen. 28:15), for He has assured: "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Heb. 13:5). Wherever we are in the New Year 2014, He tends, watches and cares for us. "As I travel down life's pathway, Jesus keeps me day by day And although the road is winding, Yet, with Him, I need not stray" The bygone year was indeed rich and rewarding. For some of us, God placed us in the home, brought many people and circumstance in our lives, permitted difficulties and pain, but enabled us to overcome, took us to different places, put us in various jobs and careers, amidst all - the pervading promise was "I'll never leave you nor forsake you". Surely, God's guidance in the present, gives us courage for the future. Observance of the Thanksgiving Day on 01/ 12/2013 was indeed a blessing where all our family members gathered together to praise and thank the Lord for all love, care and comfort received from God. Mr. Yesudas (son of former Tamil Pastor Japamoni) is appointed as worker among migrant labourers with charge of the Prasanth Nagar mission field, experimentally for a period of 3 months. Our involvement with the Salem Mission field will be reviewed as we have completed 7 years of continuous sponsorship of this centre. Harvest Festival 2013 was well arranged with Mr. D.P. Justus as the General Convener, M/s Binu Johnson & Jaichand Johnson as Jt. Conveners and Adv. Sarjine Thomas as Ex-officio convener. Rev. D.P. Godwin, Sr. Chaplain of Dr.SM CSI Medical College & Hospital inaugurated the sale. Through this annual fete intended for the Kothalam Project, we could raise an amount of Rs.11.5 lakh. The land price is fixed at Rs.65 lakhs (excluding documentation charges). Though the participation level has increased, all those who could not contribute are requested to rush in with your donations to fulfill our task at Kothalam. A collection drive is scheduled from the month of January, All church members are earnestly requested to contribute liberally towards the realisation of this project. The Calendar 2014 brought out by the Church has highlighted the legacy of our missionary tradition. Women's Fellowship and Senior Citizen's 4

7 Fellowship held their anniversary functions. The Carol services of both CEYF and Church Choir were well conducted. The Combined Christmas Celebration attracted a good crowd to our campus. Sunday School Secretary Mr. Rajeshkumar Praseedam and team took a lot of pains to enrich the programme. Mr. Jothi Sathianess co-ordinated the Manger & Christmas Tree competitions. Er. Sam Moses took lead in the exterior decoration and CEYF members organised the interior decoration of our Church. Both Prof. Mrs. Charlet Bai Robert Singh and Mrs. Pushpa Madan took care of Christmas Kit and Clothing, which was carried out very systematically. The Christmas Carol singing which was spread for almost a month and carried out by five groups under the leadership of M/s T. Jayakumar Alfred, Er. Joshi Das YS and Adv. Sarjine Thomas and our revered Pastors covering all our houses has indeed helped to stir up our ministry and house visit. Through the Christmas worship and year end services, we are all enriched and recharged to cheerfully welcome the New Year. Our church member, Mr. Sukridan K Das (Bangalore) was called to eternal rest on 21/12/2013. Let us uphold his family members in our prayers. The festival got inaugurated by Rev. D.P.Godwin (Hon. Chaplain, Dr. SM CSI Medical College, Karakonam) by ceremoniously making the first bid. On 14th Saturday, the auction went on upto 5 PM and continued on 15th Sunday on 10 AM onwards. The suborganizations of our Church played a vital role in their food stalls in attracting the crowd and to inspire them to stay on till the close of the sale in both days. The total contribution by the suborganizations is more than the income from auction. This was made possible by the Church choir who stands first with an amount of Rs.1,81,000 and Young Family Fellowship stand second with Rs.1,11,111 and other organizations too doing their might. There is an increase in participation on Sunday, but the participation in total is left to the self assessment of members of the Congregation. The total income stands at Rs.11.5 lakh. This month is named after the ancient Roman god Janus, the god of the Four Seasons and of gates, represented with two faces looking different ways, mainly forwards and backwards. This is only symbolic. Standing at the threshold of a new year, we leave the past behind and look into the future. In between is the short present in which we take stock of the past and equip ourselves to venture into the unchartered future. Standing in the present, we have to answer honestly several relevant questions. Are we satisfied with what we have done? Did we seek God s guidance in each and every step we took? Are we proud of whatever we did? Is there anything of which we secretly should feel ashamed? We can raise numerous questions like these about the past. Finally, we have to think of our gameplan for the future. Where does god come in all that we feel, think, seek and act? A teenager has exercised his imaginative mind on the number He has counted the numbers making up the new year. The total is seven. The colours in the rainbow are seven. So he greets the new year by calling it the rainbow year. There may be or may not be some sense in it. In the Biblical story of Noah and the floods we read that God placed the rainbow in the sky to signify that the worst was over. Natural calamities, man made calamities, disastors, carnages etc. etc. were a plenty in Shall we hope and pray that the worst is over as far as 2014 is concerned? It was Cromwell who advised his followers to trust in God but be prepared for the worst. What do we make of it? The only way out is to put our absolute trust in God. No New Year Thoughts will be complete without recalling the unique message contained in the immortal prose poem Foot Prints which I reproduce here in full. 16
