20 2018 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER PASTORAL VISIT ST. JUDE CHURCH, SAHIBABAD Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara with Mathruvedhi members The pastoral visit is an apostolic endeavour, an event of grace for the entire parish. His Grace Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara arrived in our parish at 8:30 a.m as part of his apostolic pastoral visit on 11/11/2018 as usual before the scheduled time. The apostolic pastoral visit consisted of four days. Our parish priest Rev. Fr. Benny Palatty, Rev. Srs from both congregations, kaikarans and parishioners welcomed him to our midst with bouquets and flags. We had a solemn mass; the holy mass has tremendous significance in the catholic church where all the faithful assembled for the worship. Members of the parish council followed by first holy communicants lined up for the offertory procession. Our joy was doubled as His Grace administered the sacrament of first holy communion and confirmation to our children. In the homely His Grace interacted with the children and found that they are well aware of the sacraments they are receiving. The decorations by our efficient sisters and choir by our junior wing also led us into a heavenly atmosphere. Archbishop thanked the people for their generous support to build a Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese in Delhi-NCR. Appreciating the dynamism of the parish, Archbishop specially congratulated parishioners for their fast growth within the last 5 years. Archbishop clearly demarked the spiritual position and the cultural practices that are to be maintained to protect our families and future generations. He also asked people to insist to their own Faridabad Diocese identity in the fast moving, culturally conflicting situation. Archbishop with Senior Choir members -18-

21 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2018 Upon finishing the Holy Mass and photo session of the new Holy Communicants there was a small refreshment for all. Later on, the prathinithiyogam secretary gave a detailed report of the beginning of the church and its activity till to date and the youth had projected a slide show of the beginning of the church, its construction, consecration and the current activities. His Grace interacted with all the Parish associations, which help us to grow more towards God and the activities concerned with the church. They are the faith formation unit, altar boys and girls, both senior and junior choir, DSYM Youth and Mathruvedhi. His Grace appreciated the initiatives and activities of each Association, signed all the records and took pics with them. Now what an apostolic pastoral visit means? In our life, it may be a first-time experience, the Archbishop coming to our homes and being easily approachable. The canon law says that a Bishop is obliged to visit the entire diocese once in five years. As the Archbishop quoted in his address to the faithful that there are many objectives of the pastoral visit. They are to come in personal contact with the parish, its spiritual, socio economic growth, its faith formation, its sacramental and liturgical life, to improve the relationship of the Archbishop with Junior Choir members Archbishop with DSYM members parish with the diocese, the living condition of the parish priest entrusted to his care, the record of the sacramental registers, to bring encouragement and hope to those involved in pastoral work and to all the faithful of the parish. As a whole to impart his fatherly love to his folks. St. Jude Sahibabad is one of the fastest growing parishes under the eparchy of Faridabad. Formerly we were under the Meerut diocese and the capuchin fathers were helping us to live the sacramental life. In the year 2013, in the month of February His Grace Kuriakose Bharanikulangara raised our community to the level of a parish St. Jude Sahibabad, and Rev. Fr. Dominic Kachappilly was appointed as its first Parish Priest. It was the farsightedness of Rev. Fr. Dominic Kachappilly and the enthusiasm of the parishioners that today we have our own place to conduct worship and other activities. From the very beginning of our church, Archbishop Bharanikulangara was in direct touch with our growth and many a time he came physically to ensure the construction of the church. In the year 2015, Rev. Fr. Dominic Kachappilly was transferred to Kerala and Rev. Fr. George Thoomkuzhy took the charge as the second parish priest. Our parish is barely a 100m away from the Delhi Border spread out over 7 kms. In the beginning we started -19-

24 2018 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER World NEWS The Ten Commandments are God's 'x-ray Pope Francis says The Decalogue is [Christ s] x-ray, it is described as a photographic negative that lets his face appear as in the Holy Shroud [of Turin]. Here is what the Decalogue is for us Christians: to contemplate Christ in order to open us to receive his heart, to receive his desires, to receive his Holy Spirit, the pope said Nov. 28. At the final general audience of the Church s liturgical year, which begins its new year, on the first Sunday of Advent, Pope Francis concluded his yearlong teachings on the Ten Commandments. With the start of the Advent season, he will begin a new topic of catechesis. Reflecting on God s commandments, Pope Francis spoke about desires, and the freedom which comes from acknowledging when desires are disordered, opening one s self to receive instead the good desires God wishes to give his children. God invites his children to obey his commandments, the pope explained, in order to release themselves from the deception of idolatries, which only empty and enslave. It is evil desires that ruin man, he noted. The Spirit lays down in our hearts his holy desires, which are the seed of new life. Francis explained that a part of finding freedom from worldly attachments is first accepting one s past, then, in order to live in the beauty of fidelity, generosity and authenticity we need a new heart, inhabited by the Holy Spirit. How can a Christian receive such a heart transplant? he asked. Through contemplation of Christ and his commandments: Looking at Christ we see beauty, goodness and truth. And the Spirit generates a life which, following these desires, triggers hope, faith and love in us. The pope pointed out that the apparent negativity expressed in the commandments do not steal, do not kill in Jesus become positive commands to love, to make room for others in the heart. This is the fullness of the law that Jesus came to bring us, he said. Thus, we discover better what it means that the Lord Jesus did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it, he said. And while the law according to the flesh was a series of prescriptions and prohibitions, according to the Spirit this same law becomes life, he said, because it is no longer a norm but the very flesh of Christ, who loves us, seeks us, forgives us, comforts us and in his Body reconciles communion with the Father, lost for the disobedience of sin. -22-
