The Book of the Ages Man s three problems are Sin, sorrow and Death. There is no fourth problem. Can any man find another problem? Since the dawn of civilization man is trying to solve the above problems. He is trying to eliminate Sin by police force, court and Jail, but utterly failed, sorrow through counselling centres and death by installing super speciality hospitals. But He is always at his wit s end. Man can not solve his problems on his own, it is a wild goose chase. Solution to the above problems is given only by a book The Bible, the book of the ages. The Bible is a timeless Book. The Bible is a supernatural book as it came through the breath of the omnipotent God. Jesus said man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God Psalm 119:89 says For ever, O Lord thy word is settled in heaven. The Bible has one Hero, His name is Jesus, one villain, that is Satan; one problem, that is Sin, one solution that is Salvation. That is what the Bible is all about. The Bible is a spiritual Book, that is why a natural man can not understand it. 1 Cor. 2:14 says But the natural man does not receive the things of the spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them because they are to be spiritually discerned. The Bible is a surviving Book. There have been emperors who have decreed the extermination of the Bible and there have been atheists who have railed against Bible They are wood peckers. Agnostics have cynically sneered at the Bible, the liberals in the church have moved heaven and earth to remove the miracles from the Bible. They are termites. There have been materialists who just simply ignored the Bible. But the Bible stands. Bible is settled in heaven. The Bible is the Saviour s Book. He can only solve the problems of mankind. The Bible is a sustaining Book. It can only help man grow spiritually. The Bible is a super charged Book. It can only give superpower to man to make him strong. The Bible is a superseding Book. It is incomparable with any other Book in the world. Prof. Mathew P. Thomas Dr. Robert G. Lee, had this to say about the Bible: All of its enemies have not torn one hole in its holy vesture, nor stolen one flower from its wonderful garden, nor diluted one drop of honey from its abundant hive, nor broken one string on its thousand-stringed harp, nor drowned one sweet word in infidel ink. Dr. Adrian Rogers said The Bible is not the book of the month or the book of the year. It is the Book of the ages. It is unlike any other book-for we read other books, but this book reads us. And no other book has ever had as much opposition as the Bible. People have laughed at it, scorned it, ridiculed it, made laws against it, and even burned it. Yet it has outlived, out lifted, out loved, out reached, out ranked, and out blessed all other books put together. It is living, breathing word of God. Thank God for the Bible. 6 Spiritual food from Acts of Philippians Mary Mathew Throughout this Epistle Paul constantly places emphasis on Christ by using such phrases as of Jesus Christ, by Jesus Christ, with Jesus Christ, For to me to live, is Christ. What a testimony! And he was ever on the alert to be just that. He wanted to know Christ, fellowship with Him, die for Him, be raised with Him, and, in having these holy aspirations, set his affection on things above where Christ is, and pressed toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. I press toward the mark (3:14) The believer s mark is perfection, or exact conformity to the Lord Jesus Christ. Oswald Chambers said, perfection means being made one with Jesus so that the disposition that ruled Him will rule us. In pressing toward this mark, we must first possess Christ, and then be like Christ. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. When we are like Jesus, every foe is overcome, every difficulty is mastered, and the crown is about to be put on our heads. The prize is won and the honour will be worn forever. Exact likeness to Jesus we shall not attain here, but we may be very much more like Him than we are. Our tempers may be more heavenly, our disposition more spiritual, and our conversation more spiritual. We may be weaned from the present world, our motives may be purified, and holiness may become our element and delight. He who has begun a good work in us can carry it on, and as we are now very unlike what we were, we may yet become more Christ - like than we are at present. But if we would, it must be the mark at which we aim. We must ever keep it in our eye, as the racer did the mark which was to decide the race. This we too often forget and are too well satisfied with present things. O! to say with Paul, for to me to live is Christ December COLLEGIATE FISHERMAN

Be Engaged in Mentoring, Baptizing & Teaching Others Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me. Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth! And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Loose him, and let him go. (John 11:41-44). The above scriptural passage is the climax of one of the greatest miracle that Jesus did while He was on the earth, which was raising Lazarus from the dead. This unique miracle of giving life back to a person who was dead and buried for four days is the seventh sign to establish that Jesus was indeed Christ, the Messiah, which Martha confessed eventually (v. 27). There are seven life lessons that we can distill from this astounding miracle: 1. Sometimes the Lord delays His answers to prayer to show more of His glory through much greater works. God s purpose was to glorify His Son (v. 4) and to cause the disciples to grow in their faith (v. 15). When God is silent in any given situation, we should realize that He is trying to bring us to a greater understanding of Himself, and fulfill His purpose in our lives. 2. God s timing to accomplish His purpose is perfect! The fact that Lazarus had been dead for four days is significant, since early rabbinic sources suggested the Jews believed the soul hovered near the body of the deceased for three days (Leviticus Rabbah 18.1). There should be no doubt in anyone s mind that God has indeed performed a great miracle so that He alone receives the glory! 3. Bad things may sometimes happen to good people as well. Both Mary and Martha shared the belief that had Jesus been there Lazarus would not have died (vv. 21, 32). However, Lazarus did not become sick (v. 3) and die (v. 14) because he had done something wrong but that the works of God should be revealed (9:3) through him (12:9). Today, God wants to use us as His witness to reveal His power to others whose eyes are blinded by Satan (2 Cor. 4:4). 4. God cares and shares in our sorrow. Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus (v. 35) revealing how much He cared and loved him. Our tears of pain attract God s loving kindness and tender care due to which He weeps with us (v. 33). God will comfort us when we mourn (Matt. 5:4) so that we can turn around and comfort others in their pain and suffering (2 Cor. 1:3-4). 5. We should be thankful to God in the midst of our troubles. In the midst of His sorrow, Jesus Dr. Shibu Cherian (Contd on page...13) COLLEGIATE FISHERMAN December

CHRISTMAS JOSHUA S COLUMN Dr. D. Joshua One more Christmas season has come. Christmas is all about Christ. Christmas reminds us the creation, incarnation transformation and consummation. First of all, we must believe that man is not evolved from any lower beings but it is God who created man and woman in his own image. (Gen 1:27). The second greatest truth is the incarnation of God in Jesus Christ. The birth of Christ was supernatural. And the angel Gabriel said to Mary, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you, therefore, also that Holy One who is to be born will be called the son of God. What a celebration when the child Jesus was born! He became the central figure of human history, the only redeemer of the human race. Jesus Christ became the greatest transformer of mankind. He bled and died on the cross of Calvary and He rose again on the third day to give mankind a second birth. Those who believe in His atonement and resurrection will be given salvation. How amazing is God s transforming power through His son Jesus Christ. He is able to change any scarlet sinner into a saint. Creation, incarnation, transformation and finally there is consummation. The second coming of Christ will be the greatest event in world history. There are about 1845 references of His return in the Bible. He is coming to rapture those who are waiting for His appearance and whose names are written in the Book of Life. This is the consummation. Christmas season is the finest time to think of the meaning of life because the whole world is saturated with the song, story and message of the Saviour. What you will do with Jesus Christ will determine your destiny December COLLEGIATE FISHERMAN

JUST A PRELUDE... PERFECT PICTURE Prakash V. Mathew What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter - (John 13:7) Here on earth, with ever so many limitations, our knowledge whatsoever is partial. We perceive only very little and conceive even lesser. We ve only a very vague view of God s dealings. We see only half completed, (half baked?) half developed plans. The full picture will stand out in fair and graceful proportions only in eternity. Once, when an artist was painting the picture of a young lad in his studio, the boy got bored at the silly sketches on the canvas. It was just some drawings here and there with no specific shape at all. The boy expressed his dissatisfaction and irritation. But the painter tried to pacify him by saying thus: stay cool, I m only working on your portrait. Only if we wait till the perfect picture is finished, we ll be able to see its beauty. Even the most attractive natural scenes are painted by some trivial sketches here and there, at first. By and by, we see summer smile upon it, night sprangles its feathery foliage with dew drops, the birds nestle on its branches and so on. It is just the same in our life also. All things work together for good. In Jeremiah 29:11, we read: For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. We feel sad when the cedar tree which stood in its majesty in nature s sanctuary succumb to the woodman s stroke. We see the axe making its first gash on its trunk, then the noble limbs stripped of their branches and at last the tree coming to a crash to the ground! We may exclaim against the wanton destruction and demolition of this proud pillar in the temple of nature. Some may bewail like the Shakespearean Character: As flies to wanton boys are we to gods, They kill us for their sport Of course we may be tempted to doubt the purpose behind each and every pain But just wait a little. Watch the wood while the workman launch it down the mountain side and at last behold it as a glorious polished beam in the temple of God. How many of us are like this Cedar! When the axe struck us, we found no reason for such mysterious dealings. But the master carpenter and sculptor had a noble plan to set us as everlasting pillars. Yes, the perfect picture is yet to emerge. December COLLEGIATE FISHERMAN 9

(Contd from page...07) thanked His Father for having heard His prayer even before performing the miracle that caused joy to abound. Real joy comes from a heart of thanksgiving that should be unrelated to our circumstances. We will be joyful when we realize that everything happening in our lives will work together for our ultimate good only (Rom. 8:28). 6. The voice of Jesus is sufficient to raise the dead back to life. Augustine once said that if Jesus had not designated Lazarus by name, all the graves would have been emptied at His command (5:28). One day in the near future when Jesus comes back, His shout will raise all the dead in Christ to rise up and meet Him in the air (1 Thess. 4:16). 7. When Jesus raises sinners to life, we are responsible to remove their grave clothes. Even today, Jesus is calling the spiritually dead in order to raise them to spiritual life (Eph. 2:5-6; 2 Cor. 5:17). However, they are still bound by the grave clothes of the world. They cannot work because their hands are bound, they cannot walk because their feet are bound, and they cannot witness because their mouths are bound. Jesus gives us the task of removing the stones of stumbling, and of unwinding the grave clothes of prejudice and superstition. Let us always remember that we are entrusted with the responsibility of making disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that Jesus has commanded us (Matt. 28:19-20). Are we fulfilling our responsibilities? Are we doing our part after God does His part in raising spiritually dead people to life? Are we engaged in mentoring, baptizing and teaching others today? ]-cn-lmc bmkømet{x (tdm-a. 5:10 11). "\nc v' F ]Zw ]gb \nb-a-øn-te-x-. 14 Evangelistic Camp at Kolkata ICPF Kolkata Chapter conducted an Evangelistic Camp from 15 th to 18 th October 2013 at Monobitan, Kolkata. Ninety delegates were present and the Camp was inaugurated by Dr. K.P. John, CGPF president. At one point of time I was almost to cancel the camp due to bad weather conditions. There was heavy shower and rushing wind due to cyclonic depression throughout West Bengal from 10 th to 15 th October 2013 and our camp site was under water. But God answers the prayer. He did a miracle for us that though there was rain till late morning of the starting day of our camp but there was no rain during the entire camp days. In the beginning, we were also disappointed and struggled to raise funds but God opened His ways and provided all our needs. Let His name alone be glorified. The students enjoyed a homely atmosphere throughout the camp. Pr. Finny John (Oasis Ministry), Pr. Blesson Varghese (Gujrat), Dr. K.P. John, Evg. Joseph Joy and Evg. Soumitra Dey (all from Kolkata), ministered in the camp. The theme was 100% LOVE. The sessions were conducted in a systematic way. Word of God brought a powerful impact on the participants. Many of them felt that they haven t heard such a teaching before. The topics covered during the camp were: Repentance, Salvation, Water Baptism, Teen-age Issues, Holy Living and Mission Challenge etc. We appreciate all the resource persons for their contribution and commitment. The worship sessions were led by ANGELOS (Delhi). It was a blessing since all were touched by the Lord. My humble request to you is to please pray for them so that God can use them in a mighty way. I thank all our CGPF Members and the donors for their full hearted contribution and support. I must appreciate the work of the student council who really worked hard to organize this camp. It was not otherwise possible to conduct the same. God is faithful to meet all our needs for He is Jehovah Jairah. Please up-hold this ministry in your prayers. May the Lord bless all of you December COLLEGIATE FISHERMAN Camp Respons: Accepted Jesus Christ as Lord in one s life -54 Decided to take water Baptism - 32 Live a holy life -66 Committed for full time ministry - 53 Received Holy Spirit Baptism - 34 Testimony I can testify the whole world that I love Jesus Christ more than anything and any one. - Arpita Sinha.
