2 From the Vicar s Desk... Dearly beloved in Christ, With great gratitude I bring greetings to you as we completed one year in this parish as your vicar. We as a family are indebted to you all for the way in which you cared for us. As we together continuing our faith journey let us pray to God to grant his grace upon us to fulfill the mission that the Lord entrusted upon us. We are also blessed by the ministry of John P. Varghese Achen and family and I request your prayerful support to his family. We had about 430 families worshipping together regularly both at STC and in the church. While we doing that we should take deliberate efforts to know each other. Otherwise we would become a crowd and not a community of believers. The Church is a family; a community of believers who share the joys and the sorrows of each other and striving with God to establish the Kingdom of God by engaging the ministry of providing justice and peace to all, and to engage in the ministry of reconciliation. I am grateful to God for giving us an opportunity to provide 10 houses in the mission fields (3 at Jangamacottah, 3 at Sivanapuram, and 4 at Cikkabalapur). The parish Edavaka Mission also provided one house in Rayalpad Mission. The St. Thomas Center functioned well this year by giving qualitative services to all those who availed its facilities. At present we can accommodate 25 persons in rooms and about 110 persons in dormitories. Now we furnished the dormitories with 15 beds. We had a good facility to conduct conferences including the provision for lodging for persons at a very reasonable rate of rent. Mr. Saji Jacob has been providing a commendable service as its Manager. I urge you to encourage your friends and relatives to make use of the facilities of our Center. May God bless you all. 3 Mundgod - a place heeding to the voice of the Gospel Rev. John P. Varghese It is with great joy and thankfulness I greet one and all in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We are transferred from Mundgod to this parish as the Assistant Vicar and we reached here on 2 nd May We received a warm welcome by all. We express our thanks and sincere gratitude to the Vicar Rev. Dr. Alex Thomas and the members of the Parish for the love and care that shown to us. We request your prayerful support for a blessed ministry in the Bangalore East Mar Thoma Church. I would like to introduce Mundgod, one of the Mission fields of the Mar Thoma Church in North Karnataka. Mundgod is a place near to Hubli and Sirsi, where we have 150 Malayalee families who were migrated from Kerala during the s. They shaped their life through cultivation and the allied activities. Achens from the Ankola catered the spiritual needs of the people in the initial period. Later the Church provided the ministry of Missionary Achens and Evangelists to the mission work at Mundgod. As a result the Mission developed into a phase in which at present we have Four Parishes in Arisanamkery, Mundgod, Kargoli, Koppa and Three Chapels in Lakkouli, Nandigetty, Nellaruvi respectively. In addition to this, Mission successfully running a Day Care Centre with 75 Kannada children. Through the untiring efforts of the Missionary Achens and Evangelists, Mission reached out to 50 more villages in 3 Contd..4

4 Mundgod and about 1000 people heard the Gospel and received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. At present, the MTEA and the Chennai-Bangalore Diocese jointly engaging the Mission activities at Mundgod. So far, the mission activities are continued by the prayerful participation of the well minded people. 16 A Mobility Impaired Elderly Man and Mentally Impaired Wife Their experience on a Sunday wishing to go to church at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 26, 2013 We happened to be alone for a few days. Our grand daughter was available to be with us at night for 2 days. It so happened she could not stay overnight on Saturday and on Sunday we were totally on our own. Yet this did not bother me. Have a light breakfast by 7 a.m. and be ready by 9 a.m. to be transported to the church close by. However the partner was severely handicapped and blank and unable to do anything, even though it was quite apparent and understood that some coffee had to be made and bread kept for breakfast. So I took over to make coffee and decided to make a boiled egg together with our bread and butter. Having made the coffee, I went on to boil the egg. Before I reached the stove, where there was a vessel of water to boil the egg in, the egg in my right hand cracked and spilled over the floor. Before I could recover from this setback, the other egg also cracked. I decided to fling it into the vessel on the stove before that also totally spilled onto the floor. I was lucky the cracked egg with half the contents landed into the vessel and now all I had to do was light the stove to boil it. Both my hands were soiled with egg The right one much more than the left. I asked myself, How can I get this gelatinous slippery stuff out of my way? My first reflex was to clean my right hand on my bald patch, then look around for a floor mop to clean the floor. I have a retriever which is needed to retrieve things from the floor, so I had to work my way back to my room to get the retriever and I managed to clear the floor. Then I proceeded to light the stove to boil the egg, half of which was already in the water. I proceeded to have some slices of bread buttered and took the remnants of 16

17 the egg from the vessel and shared the bread, egg with my partner. By the time all this was done, it was nearly 9 a.m. and time to go to church. I phoned to my son and told him not to bother to come and take me to church, as we had not had our bath yet. Our grandson however, came over to make sure we were able to proceed with our morning duties. This was purely my making, because my children were requesting us to be with them and not alone. And yet I stubbornly preferred to be in my own room, with the adjustments in the toilet, the railings to hold on, the much needed stick to help get into my pants, and the retriever to pick up things from the floor. The son staying along with us had gone for a 3 day holiday and that s how we happened to be at home alone old couple.
