Thomas The Right Attitude The Sermon on the Mount The Beatitudes - the first sermon spoken by the Lord Jesus Christ is one of the most powerful and profound passages in the scripture. Once a person absorbs the principles the preamble of the kingdom of heaven which underlie the Beatitudes and lives by them, he never falls to sin, sorrow and death which are the problems of the present world. More over he will be free from depression and despair. Beatitudes are be attitudes, not do attitudes. They mean Be these attitudes in you. They tell the right attitude which a person should cultivate and practice to avoid pitfalls that cause mental depression. The right attitudes are the best medicine for mental, physical and spiritual health. They serve as the blue print for healthy and abundant living. Our attitudes have a tremendous and powerful influence upon every part of our being. It is not our arteries but our attitudes which have the biggest say in our personal well being. There is a relationship between attitudes and health both physical and spiritual. There is not a tissue or organ in the body that is not influenced by the attitude of mind and spirit. The right attitudes produce the right effect in our bodies. The wrong attitude may help a person to reach a high altitude in position, possessions, popularity and pleasures which are short lived and followed by a great fall and destruction. The best example is Satan. Satan was created in perfection. The Bible says you were perfect in your ways from the day you were created (Ezek 28:15). He was absolutely perfect as long as he kept the right attitude towards God. He became brilliantly stupid, when he said I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God Satan s heart was swollen with so much pride that he thought he could usurp the place of God. Because of the wrong attitude, he fell from the high altitude. That is the reason why the Lord Jesus said Blessed are the poor in spirit for their s is the kingdom of heaven. Jesus Christ is the best example for us, for what he preached. He is the only one who could keep the right attitude when He came to this sin ridden earth. He became so poor in spirit, when He humbled Himself. Bible says Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ, Jesus who being in the form of God did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name. In the very first words of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gives us the key to happiness ie, Humility. Humility is the right attitude that we should hold on to get long lasting happiness. It is not the altitude of life that matters but the attitude of mind. COLLEGIATE FISHERMAN August

6 Spiritual food from Solomon Heavenly Love Lovers always call one another sweet names. Sometimes those names are not understood except by those involved. The general public will say they are silly names, but the lovers know their meaning, silly or not! These names are for the person or persons loved, not for every Tom, Dick, and Harry. Even our heavenly Father has names for His loved ones. They will sound silly to the world, but to us who are the redeemed of the Lord, we anxiously await the time we stand before the Lord and hear the lover of our souls call us by a name that only we will understand (Rev.2:17). As we read this song of Solomon, we cannot help but notice the love and devotion the bride has for her shepherd - lover. And such name calling by the bride! Each name is worthy of His being. Your Name is as ointment poured out (1:3). The name of Jesus is incomparably sweet and precious. There is no name in heaven like His, it is above every name. It perfumes heaven above and the church below. Its fragrance is unequalled. We are never weary of it and we never shall be. It comprises all we need; it contains all we desire. Having Christ we have all things. He is Christ, or God anointed; consecrated to be a Priest perpetually; sanctified to be God s Prophet and Apostle, qualified to be God s King to reign over and on His holy hill Zion. He is Jesus, God s Saviour, by whom God saves sinners, millions of sinners, the vilest sinners. He is Lord - all power in heaven and earth is given to Him. He is Supreme, or Head over all. He is the Lord Jesus Christ. He is all that God can give, all that we can require or enjoy. When the Holy Spirit opens up the meaning of His precious name and gives us to realise our interest in it, it appears divinely sweet and glorious. Precious name! May I know it more fully, enjoy it more powerfully, publish it more effectually, and praise it more frequently. Name of Jesus, be my solace, my subject, my song August COLLEGIATE FISHERMAN

7 Masks Modern Christians Wear Dr. Paulson Pulikottil The life of and life in modern Christian churches, with all the dissensions, hatred and disunity is certainly shameful. That is not what Christians are called to, they are called to produce the fruit of the Spirit. Fruit of the Spirit is the natural outcome of a Spirit-led life. It is characteristic of a Spirit-filled life. The foremost of this is love (Gal 5:22). Though Paul listed love in Galatians 5:22 he best exposits it in his first correspondence to the church in Corinth. Love is the hallmark of Christdisciples: By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. Three redherrings of true love are spirituality, charity and self-sacrifice (John 13:35). However, Christians tend to wear different masks that look like love which Paul criticizes very caustically in the great poem on love in 1 Corinthians 13. First of these masks is false spirituality. Christians who fail to love each other as Christ loved them tend to wear a mask of spirituality. This comes usually in the form of high spiritual gifts like, speaking in heavenly languages, prophecy, and claims of miracles. Even if these claims are true, they are useless unless they proceed from lives that are saturated with the love of Christ and is able to pour that love out to others. Such lives are lifeless as sounding brass or claning symbols, makes noise but lifeless! Second mask that they use to cover their loveless lives is charity. To be at the service of the poor and needy is often considered as acts of love, COLLEGIATE FISHERMAN but may not. I once saw a lady running after a begger to give him an apple from her shopping bag. It is evening, and her religion requires that she should do some good thing each day to earn merits before her gods. It is not really love that drove her but her own selfish spiritual interest. Christians need not be different, most social service need not be out of love, but fund-driven or for a good name in society. I don t intend to look down upon people who sacrifice for the poor out of genuine love. Third mask is self-sacrifice. Paul mentions the extreme self-sacrifice of letting oneself to be burnt at the stake (one of the means of persecution in early Christian period). Just because a person denies his body, chastises himself does not mean that s/he is doing it out of love. The Bible insists in this passage (1 Cor 13:3) that giving and even self-molesting for the sake of charity is useless if there is no real love. Christians are expected to serve one another in love (Gal 5:13). For that we need to rip these mask off. Lack of love leads them to behave like animals who bite and devour each other (Gal 5:15). These two verses in Galatians which serve as introduction to the discussion on the fruit of the Holy Spirit in Gal 5:22-23 explains why so we face so much of disunity and hatred in modern churches. 8 Jayanta Chhinchani Professional Spirituality Versus Inner Spirituality Be Spiritual is the slogan of every religion. Every religion teaches to be spiritual. No religion in the world, lessen the importance of being spiritual. Even in the time of Jesus, there were certain religious sects who taught others to be spiritual. There is nothing wrong to be spiritual. Indeed, it is necessary for understanding the spiritual things because a carnal man cannot understand the spiritual things (1 Cor 2:14-15). But when it side track from inner spirituality to professional spirituality, it leads to disaster. The Pharisees were one of the groups during the time of Jesus, who gave more importance to the professional spirituality. They gave more importance to the customs of Moses like no work on Sabbath day, taking bath, washing hands before they eat, and circumcision. So, they used to measure spirituality of a person on the basis of outward life. Even today we Christians often do that. For us a person is spiritual if he prays day and night, if he fast thrice in a week, some time if he speaks in tongue. There are some Christians who teach others to wear white clothes, have a clean shave and not to wear ornaments in order to be a true Christian. These are neither the hallmarks of true Christians nor an identification of spotless hearts and unpolluted minds. But I don t mean to say we must not wear white shirt, not to shave our mustache and beards or to wear ornaments. All that I mean to say is let s not consider those doings are the marks of true Christians. Legalism is the threat to Christian freedom. An inner spirituality demonstrates purity of heart and purity of mind. To teach this, Jesus cursed the fig tree, by which he wants to teach two important things: (a) inward quality of life is more important than outward quality (b) the power of faith two important things: (a) inward quality of life is more important than outward quality (b) the power of faith. This morning I have meditated the story of the fig tree recorded in Mk 11: The story of the fig tree gives us so many good lessons against false spirituality. Even Jesus also said learn lesson from the fig tree in Mat 24: 32. The illustration of the fig tree is mentioned in both Old Testament and New Testament, we see in Gen 3: 7, 2 Kings 2:7, Jug 9:11and I Sam 30:12 Even Jesus used the illustration of the fig tree to communicate spiritual insights in several occasions. We shall see one of them for our short meditation. So let s open Gospel according to MK 11: 13-16, In the preceding passage we see Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem. After having entered the Jerusalem temple, Jesus and his disciples went out to Bethany and spent the night there. In the morning, when they returned to the

9 Jerusalem city, he was hungry. And he saw a fig tree which was full of leaves and looking glossy and then he thought he would find something. But unfortunately he found nothing except beautiful leaves. Jesus then cursed the fig tree. As I have told you that from this episode Jesus wanted to teach the Jews about the need of inner spirituality than outside professional purity. This story bears a complex characteristic. The complexity that we see here is: (1). was Jesus right when he cursed the fig tree? Since that was not the season for figs. I offer two reasons. (a) The Greek word used here is kairos, for the season. The same word is found in Eph 5: 16, which is translated as opportunity. So here kairos means, opportunity or an appointed time (H.C. Hahn in TDNT). That is to say, the opportunity of bearing fruit was gone or the appointed time was over. The gospel writers did not use the word kronos that denotes whose duration is not as a rule precisely determined. (b) Jesus cursed that tree not because he did not find fruit but because of its pretension. Thereby Jesus wanted to teach the Jews the importance of inward quality rather than outward quality. Along with this, Jesus wanted to teach about the power of faith. (1) Unselfishness is a symptom of an inward spirituality 1. We find its leaves were useful for Adam and Eve (Gen 3:7). 2. The lump of the figs was used for healing (2 King 20:7) 3. It produces sweetness and delicious fruits (Jug 9:11) 4. It offers us shade, under which people rest. 5. Fig cake (1 Sam 30:12). Even if you pray day and night yet you still live a selfish life, you then are not a spiritual person. All your spirituality is like a tomb outside very nice but inside is full of dirty things. Paul admonished us in Phil 2:1-5 two important things: (a) consider others better than yourself (b) look not for own interest but for the interest of others. John F. Kennedy said, Don t ask what your country can do for you but ask what you can do for your country. COLLEGIATE FISHERMAN (2) Generosity is a beauty of inner spirituality (Mk 11:14) When a fig tree bears fruit, it never takes anything for itself. Never tells anyone not to have its fruits. Everything a tree has is offered for others. There is nothing a tree holdback. It always says, Let others benefit. It takes lot of pain to bear fruit. Yet it never becomes stingy. Generosity demands a great amount of sacrifice. A spiritual person will not withhold to give his time, talents and resources for others who are in need. Often we think when we have much we will be able give to others. You give what you have. A widow in the gospels was appreciated for her generosity. She offers all that she had. Likewise we must learn to give instead of learning to receive. (3) Impartiality is quality of an inward maturity 1. A tree never shows any partiality to anyone. It gives equal amount of shade to every one. Anyone can have its fruits. There is no classification. 2. A tree never shows any discrimination. A tree says yes to every one everything. For a tree, a color is not important, a look is not important, wealth is not important. A dress code is not important. All that is important is to share its fruits and shade to all. When we pray we should pray for all regardless who they are. We should preach the goodness of Jesus to all section of people regardless of their caste and class. The message of love is for all, the forgiveness of God is for all, the presence and power of God is for all. We must not restrict to any particular section of people. We must not show any partiality because (Deut 10:17) 1. It is against the faith of Christ (jam 2: 1) 2. It makes us a wicked judge (vs. 2, 4) 3. It is mocking God (vs. 3) 4. It is against the royal law (vs.8) 5. We commit sin when we do partiality (vs. 9-11) 6. We must not show partiality, for we are under the law of liberty (vs ). SO, LET US NOT BE SELFISH. RATHER SERVE THE HUMANITY IN LOVE AND WHOLEHEARTEDLY. August

10 Swimming Against the Sherly Kuriachan If one compares the values that were considered as spiritual few years back are no more a matter of concern for today. Humans are facing different challenges in life to stay in fidelity. The youth facing different facets of life find it difficult to live in veracity and integrity. A fish that is alive can never swim along the water current but does swim against it. We as believers of Christ ought to carefully choose to live a life worthy of the calling laid upon us. Added to this we need to accomplish the God given tasks faithfully. In Nehemiah s time the people of Judah who were in exile knew very well that they were people who were supposed to go back. Isaiah prophecies long back heralding the message of hope, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God ; Every valley shall be lifted up, every mountain brought low uneven grounds made level and rough places plain For what? The people at Babylon were to get ready for a second exodus Yahweh leading the great come back from exilic place. Jeremiah prophesied, when 70 years are fulfilled I will visit you and I will fulfill my promise to you; I have plans for you; for your welfare; to give you a future with hope; Ezekiel prophesied the dry bones coming alive; he said You Israelites are the dry bones; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. With so many great promises and Ezekiel s visions of the temple being built again, we have groups of people arriving in the promised land from Babylon. Sheshbazzar began with the foundation for the temple; he disappeared from history; Zerubbabel steps in his shoes, completes the foundation and then a halt a big halt for 16 years. Nobody wanted to pursue the work because of serious drought that resulted in famine, financial crisis, the land was filled with rubbles that was difficult to be cleared. Moreover there was immense opposition by the Samaritans who liked to hold the monopoly of the place. Haggai prophesied and encouraged the Jews to rebuild the temple and not to be selfish by looking into their own affairs. With all these struggles, with the encouragements of the prophets like Haggai and Zechariah, Zerubbabel completed building of the temple in 516B.C. The focus of this writing is on the nudging that Nehemiah heard in his innermost being that God

11 was calling him to build a wall in Jerusalem and in Nehemiah s point of view to accomplish the task against all odds. In Nehemiah chapter 1, Nehemiah a Jew who served at the Persian king s table, heard from one of his brothers Hanani about the condition in Jerusalem, a city without walls was open to all kinds of troubles and snares. Those who escaped captivity are not happy in Jerusalem they are suffering shame, Nehemiah felt God nudging him to do something about it. Nehemiah felt God calling him to take leadership to rebuild the wall. Many of us feel the nudging of the Holy Spirit inspiring us to take up a mission, may be teaching or pastoring or evangelizing, serving at the tables, cleansing the lepers or caring the orphans. Some of us respond positively, others turn a deaf ear. There are some who run along the calling but later quit because of the pressure of the struggles that one faces. Many choose to serve God on easier channels. Taking a risk to play a part in the mission of God is the challenge of the day. Trailblazing through the rubbles is not an easy task but with God all things are possible. It is easy for a fish to swim along the current but only a dead fish does so. Every fish that has life in it would swim against the current. Nehemiah is found to take bold steps to face several crises in order to bring God s mission through. He swam against the currents. In the following passage are discussed the kinds of obstacles he faced and how he won over each of them successfully. Current 1- Permission from Persian King (Neh. 1:4-2:8) Nehemiah worked as the cup-bearer in the court of Artaxerxes ( B.C). It was not an easy task to get permission to go over to Judah. Nehemiah felt the nudging of God burdening him that drew him on his knees. He fasted and prayed, He cried out to God confessing his and the nations sins, recalling the covenant promises O God, give success to your servant in the sight of this man. (Neh. 1:11). The Lord did listen to his prayer. The next day the king himself asked Nehemiah why his face was sullen and Nehemiah goes on to explain his problem. Nehemiah knew God is mighty enough to move the heart of the king and it came to pass. The first ocean current was overcome. This he accomplished by bending his knees. COLLEGIATE FISHERMAN Current 2 Opposition from the Locals (Neh. 2:19-20) Nehemiah with permission came to the land of Judah, there he was not received with a hearty welcome. He secretly went and inspected the broken walls. He called the commoners of the returnees and said, Come, let us rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. They nodded their heads showing a positive signal. Three rose up in opposition to the proposal of Nehemiah, Sanballat, Tobiah and Geshem. Sanballat was the governor of the Samaria, according to the Elephantine Papyri. His family was allied by marriage with the high priests of Jerusalem ( Neh. 13:28). Tobiah too was an accepted figure among the Judean families who did not go to Babylon. Geshem, the Arab was a powerful chieftain in Qedar, North west Arabia. All these three were not common people but those who had good stand and socially aristocratic. This was the second ocean current that Nehemiah faced. These three leaders raised an objection and interpreted Nehemiah s cause as a rebellion. They asserted Nehemiah and party have not come with a good cause, they want to rebel against the King of Persia. At their trapping question, Nehemiah should have shaken with fear, but he gave a bold response. Observe how Nehemiah responded to the objection vs. 20. God of heaven has entrusted us, he will give success; we are his servants; You have no right to ask or interfere or no place for you to join. By this he was answering at different angles Who sent them? God the creator, the God of heavens, the one who is greater than the king. The second question he answered was, who they were? We are the servants of God. These answers declare the relationship of Nehemiah and God. Nehemiah and his people were the servants doing the Master s business, you have no part in this. He will give us success is an open confession of faith. If our relationship with God is right there is no need to fear any accusations of the opponents against God s work. Let s launch out and build the walls that God has entrusted us with. Build lives that are broken. Heal the blind and the broken hearted. If we have right relationship with God then we will have the courage to face the false tags put on our necks by the rebels. (To be contd...) August

12 Prakash V. Mathew Redeeming Time Behold, now is the accepted TIME; behold, now is the day of salvation. (2 Cori. 6:2). Time and tide waits for none Priorities in life should not come topsy-turvy. As our life-span here on earth is very short, we ve to be very cautious in setting our goal as well as using our time. Catch time by the fore-lock is a very imaginative saying! Once a great artist was summoned to paint the picture of Emperor Fredrick. With great pains the artist painted the details of the picture and the background. But sketched the Emperor s figure as a mere outline with charcoal and spent most of the time to complete the background and other details. He purposed to paint the most important part of the picture at the end. Unfortunately the artist died before he had a chance to finish the painting. This partially finished picture is exhibited at Berlin Art Gallery. Is it not a clear warning to set priorities in using time? Just like this, many people spend all their time and effort taking care of secondary and silly things in life. Most important and crucial duties are often neglected. We need to give first place to the Emperor of our lives and not postpone it for our convenience. Otherwise we would be too late! May the good Lord bless us and give divine wisdom to utilize our time fruitfully. TIME may be the only gift which is equally shared by the weakest and the most affluent. It s a God given gift in equal measure for us and Bill Gates! Only when we are in His perfect will, we ll be using our time fruitfully. Helen Keller once remarked: Use your eyesight as you ll be stricken blind tomorrow. Every gift we enjoy is a blessing from the Lord and TIME is so precious! Paul, the great apostle, held fast to the honour bestowed upon him to use his time, as the steward of the mysteries of Christ. He permitted no one to hinder his race-track. When there was any hindrance, he leaped over it! Let us also try to press on with vigour and catch time by its forelock! I was in Srinagar, Jammu Kashmir at that time. I was planning to return to Kerala to join ICPF. But this caption made me afraid. Any way, on September 1 st, 1982 we, as a family, returned to Kerala trusting in God. When we reached Kerala, things were not out of control, though corruption, drinking, drug abuse, sexual perversion and other vices were increasing day by day.] With the turn of the 21 st century, virtues were disappearing from our state. Darkness was spreading all over the land. All vices happened together not only in public but even in private life. Happy and harmonious families are a rare sight. Divorce rate is increasing alarmingly. People spend more money for drinking than for rice. Though many people have become rich, by internal and external income, they spend it lavishly for building most luxurious houses, for costly costumes, jewellery and cosmetics. On the other side, we still hear the cry for bread, cloth and shelter. Our roads are not safe; full of pits causing perpetual accidents. The ethical and moral side is deplorable, deserving judgment from above as in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah. Ladies and children are not safe in the day and night. Once in a while, we hear, ladies who enter an autorikshaw for a destination are taken by force to an unknown place where immoral men are waiting to molest them. Even men who crossed sixty or eighty are so filled with lust that they mercilessly abuse infants and children. The moral dimension is missing in schools and colleges. What is happening among the adolescents and youth in schools and colleges are beyond words. Infact schools and colleges have become gates of hell. There is no leader with courage and moral authority in Kerala to speak against this. There is also disregard for value system and lack of fear of God. The first and foremost need of Kerala is now not eradication of poverty but bringing people to virtues of life like honesty, humility, holiness and integrity. 23 WHAT A WONDERFUL GOD WE SERVE At the heat of the summer, while most of the people around were busy with their vacation trips, ANGELOS & ICPF, Delhi organized a special mission trip to Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and Leh-Ladak focusing on the youths in schools, colleges and universities. On June 15 th early morning 7 of our missionaries [Moncy, Benny, Titto, Febin, Denny, Abishen Leo and Dennis] started their mission trip to Ludhiana. There we conducted a promotional meeting and special prayer for the youths in the city. Pr K Koshy helped us to organize the meeting in his church and around 150 people gathered there. On16 th morning, we started our journey to Jalandhar, where Pr Sam George was waiting to receive us with great joy. There we conducted meeting at his church and around 125 people gathered there also. From Jalandhar we moved to Kapurthala on 17 th. There we conducted a gospel meeting in a village called Lakahan-Kalan. And the meeting was inaugurated by State Commission for Minorities member Mr Hamid Masih. He whole heartedly supported our work in Jammu & Kashmir. As we shared the Word of God, many people received the goodnews of gospel in that village. As per our schedule we reached Jammu on 18 th. Pr Thomas Samuel helped us to conduct a promotional meeting at Suvartha Church Jammu. Suvartha Church Jammu was led by Pr Raju Varghese, who along with his church members had a real blessed time with Angelos and ICPF Team. Many students came forward to dedicate their life for the Lord. From there we started our journey to Reasi for Sunday worship. This was on 19 th. Pastor P. T. Samuel from IPC church gave us a warm welcome. After the service we started our journey to Udhampur where we had time to rest. On 20 th early morning we started our journey to the city which is the crown of our country, Srinagar. The City of Dal Lake is so beautiful. We were praying diligently for the city of Srinagar due COLLEGIATE FISHERMAN to the hard security systems over there. We planned to have a trial program in the premise of Tyndale Bisco School which was located in Lal Chowk. The trial was conducted in front of the School. Bishop Rt Rev P.K. Samantaroy initiated to get permission for the programs to be conducted in the school premise. After the trial, they gave the permission to conduct our programs in the school premises on 22 nd morning. This is one of the biggest schools in whole Jammu & Kashmir, which was started in 1880 where the former chief minister Farooq Abdullah and many other great personalities were shaped. Around 500 students attended the meeting. Due to security reasons there used to be less live performances in the city. The students and the school authorities were excited about our programs. This performance opened way for us to conduct program in their camp site in Sonamarg which is some 84 km away from Srinagar. That is on the way to Kargil. On 22 nd we started our journey to Sonamarg, Before we started our journey to Sonamarg we collected food items for next two days. By 8 am we reached Sonamarg and students were surprised to see us. There we sang few songs. There we met Sir Gabriel the colleague of Dr D Joshua. From there students came singing ESHU ASSALIAWAH We were planning to start our journey before the army convoy started but we were late due to the program at Sonamarg. There we were stuck for 2 hours. Again we started our journey by 11:30 am and we reached Zozilla pass. This is one of the toughest road to Leh. The dedicated team members managed to cross Zozilla pass prayerfully. The road was not visible due to the melting of glaciers. The path is dangerous too. We saw many Malayalee soldiers who were working in the high altitude desert. This reminded us of the dedication of these young soldiers who toil to protect the country despite they were far away from their dear ones. Then we reached Drass by 3 pm, a place where many fights took place in We saw Tiger Hills August

24 and we prayed for the security of our great nation. By 7 pm we reached Kargil, the main town in between Srinagar and Leh. We took few hours rest and by 3 am we started our journey towards Leh Ladak. On the way to Leh we reached Fotula top, feet above sea level, the highest point in the Srinagar-Leh road. We reached Leh Ladak by afternoon next day and took rest due to high altitude struggles we had. Leh is around feet above sea level. It is a Buddhist dominated area where the culture of the people is entirely different from rest of India. Rev. Elijah Gergan, Principal of Moravian Mission school organized few programs for us. On 24 we went to Moravian Mission School at Matho Village. We met about 50 students, interacted with them and the teachers over there. In the evening, we had a wonderful gathering with few youngsters who had intervention of Christ in their lives. We conducted a live concert at Desert rain café where around 50 people gathered. 25 th morning we had a program at Leh Moravian mission school which was founded in the Year There around 500 students participated and in the evening, we had a wonderful opportunity to commune with the children at Himali Mitra hostel. On the final day, that is, on 26 th in Leh we had a good time of worship and fellowship at Moravian church. The Pastor Elijah Gergan and family gave their valuable time to promote the work of the Lord through ICPF in Leh despite their busy schedule. On 26 th afternoon, when we left Leh, our hearts were burdened for perishing souls in Kargil, Drass and Leh. On 27 th we reached at Tyndale Bisco School Srinagar. The school management arranged a program in another school of theirs, in Tangmarg. It was on 28 th. The place is about 50 KM away from Srinagar. Last year this school was totally burnt down by the terrorists. There was gathering of about 400 Students. After the live music program, we shared our testimonies. From there we travelled to Uhdampur and we reached the destination at night. 29 th we had a wonderful time with Rev Santhosh Thomas who is the director of Brooklyn Missions School and Kashmir Evangelical Fellowship. In the evening we conducted a musical concert at the Mission compound where around 350 people attended the meeting. The resource persons were Bro. Samson Thomas, Bro. Navin Thomas and the worship sessions were led by Bro. James Bovas. 33 students from Ahmedabad have attended the training. Bro. Samson Thomas emphasized on submission as the primary step towards being a Christian leader as shown by Jesus through his life. Bro. Navin Thomas covered the practical aspects of Christian leadership and shared the real life challenges experienced by a leader. This was an evangelistic meeting with theme Where am I. We had three sessions. The meeting started at 9.30 a.m. and finished at 3.30 p.m. Two sessions were handled by Brig. G. 26 ONE DAY RETREAT AT NAMAKKAL ICPF-Salem Chapter has organized One Day Youth Retreat on 31 st July 2001 at A.G. Church, Namakkal. 164 Students participated. Namakkal is a newly formed district in the state of Tamil Nadu. This event is the pioneer effort of ICPF. This programme was conducted by ICPF Salem Student Counsellor and Students of Namakkal District. The theme of the retreat was In the World, but not of the World. The retreat commenced with the prayer of Rev. Nathan, (A.G. Church, Namakkal) followed by the Ice-Breaking & Worship session by Bro. Jify Yohannan (ICPF- Ernakulam) and the message was given by Dr. D. Joshua (ICPF- Vice President). After the delicious lunch, Bro. S. Jebin Thampi Dhas (ICPF Tirunelveli) has taken a short presentation highlighted on Addiction followed by the Juggling programme conducted by Bro. T. Sam Venkatesh (ICPF Madurai). A lively session with interactions on Teen Issues of Bro. Jify Yohannan for boys and Sis. Bincy Yohannan for girls were conducted. Finally, Bro. Justin (ICPF Staff) gave short presentation about ICPF ministries and Vote of Thanks. Then Rev. Nathan gave an exhortation and concluded the retreat with the word of prayer and the benediction. Special Highlights of the Retreat This programme was conducted through the funds raised by the students. The students participated actively through their creative activities like mime, skit, etc. Students came from Namakkal, Salem, Erode districts of Tamil Nadu. The students represented 16 colleges and a Higher Secondary School. Majority of the participants were Hindus. Three Muslim girls have participated and they were blessed immensely. Most of them had felt the touch of God and accepted Jesus Christ. The students left with the request to conduct another programme very soon. The feedback shows that this programme has made a wonderful impact and remarkable changes in their life. The ICPF retreat Make it 99 was held on 23 rd July at St. Francis s School from 4.00 pm-8.00 pm, focusing the colleges in South Bangalore Zones like Koromangala, Madiwala, M.G. Road and Banerghatta regions which are known as the SIN CITY. First of its kind in the South, a round 80 people turned up in which 45 of them came for the first time. The event started with icebreakers and games which brought the people together followed by choreography by Narrow Gate band headed by Sujith M. Sunil. The speaker Bro. Santhosh Vadakekut spoke about making it 99 and how Jesus would make our lives perfect and also about wearing a mask to prevent the truth is not healthy. It surely was a blessing and around 10 students volunteered to submit their lives completely to Jesus. The retreat as such was a grand success and all the participants were benefited.
