As you are aware that our Chief Editor Shibu Mathew is currently on holidays in India, I have been given the responsibility to help the editorial team to publish this issue of our bulletin, rainbow. We have had an awesome and joyful summer season and we look forward with anticipation to the arrival of autumn season in New Zealand. Our bulletin, Rainbow, 7 th edition also reaches us with full of hope and joy. Another Lenten season has passed. The season of Lent offered us once again an opportunity to reflect upon the very heart of our Christian life. It enabled us to renew our faith in God, reflect upon our Christian life, repent on our sins and turn back to Jesus. The journey was marked by prayer, fasting, way of the cross, alms giving and sharing. The Syro Malabar Community in Auckland have had the opportunity to prepare for the Lenten Season with the successful annual retreat in March conducted by Fr. Davis Pattathu CMI, Fr. Davasia Kanattu CMI and Bro. Jose of the renowned Jerusalem Retreat Centre, Trichur, kerala. For us, Christians, Easter signifies hope. The Easter season is a time when we rejoice in the knowledge that our risen Lord has overcome death and in doing so, brought forgiveness to the world. The resurrection experience is all about a new beginning, a fresh opportunity and a new identity. The season brings a special meaning to all those who are feeling at their most vulnerable in their difficult times. The truth of the resurrection of Christ, our Saviour, is a message of hope and it is one that we are called to share with our friends and neighbours wherever they are. We all have pressures of modern life within work, family and friends; however, this festive season offers us a message of hope. The tensions are no less real but the truth is that there is always hope. Now the God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing that ye may abound in hope (Romans, 15:13). Dear friends, May the spirit of Easter which is all about hope and joy lift up your spirits and keep you happy all days. Sincerely Francis Joseph (Acting Chief Editor) R A I N B O W : E X P R E S S, E X C H A N G E A N D B E I N F O R M E D O F A C H R I S T I A N W A Y O F L I F E!

Melbourne Visit: By ASMCM Parish Council Members for the installation of Bishop P A G E 5 A REPORT OF THE VISIT TO MELBOURNE FOR THE INSTALLATION OF BISHOP BOSCO PUTHUR BY ASMCM COUNCIL MEMBERS I am very grateful for the opportunity to attend the Solemn Eucharistic Liturgy and installation ceremony of Bishop Mar Bosco Puthur. It was a wonderful experience, a real blessing and a once in a life time opportunity. Rev Fr Joy Thottamkara, Mr Tomy Joseph (trustee), Mr Saju Thomas and I (council members) represented the New Zealand Syro Malabar Catholic Mission at the installation ceremony. On 25 th March at 06.15am we gathered at the Auckland airport. We faced a dilemma as none of us knew how to get checked in online. Finally with help, we managed to get our boarding passes. We had a comfortable journey and landed in Melbourne at 10.40am. Mr Stephen was waiting to take us to our accommodation in Melbourne. We stayed with the family of Mr Johnychen and Albi who were extremely gracious and caring and made us feel at home. In the evening we went to St Patrick s Cathedral for the installation ceremony. The ceremony started with a procession from the sacristy to the cathedral. Thousands of faithful, many priests and eminent Bishops from the Latin, Oriental/Eastern and Syro Malabar Church participated in the procession, mass and installation. The celebrants included Major Arch Bishop Cardinal George Alencherry, Archbishop Paul Gallaghan- Apostolic Nuncio to Australia, Archdeacon Fr Francis Kolencherryvicar general, Archbishop Dennis Hart-Archbishop of Melbourne and Australian CBC President and Msgr Grey Bennet vicar general Melbourne diocese.

P A G E 6 Archbishop Dennis Hart and Fr Francis Kolencherry made the opening addresses. The apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Paul Gallaghan read the Papal bulletin in Latin. Fr Antony Kollannur-chancellor, Major Archepiscopal Curia read its English translation. Major Archbishop Mar George Alencherry was the main celebrant. Bishop Bosco Puthur knelt down and Cardinal George Alencherry placed his hand on the bishop s head, said the installation prayer, traced the sign of cross and led him to the chair. Priests from different chaplaincy pledged loyalty to the bishop. Fr Joy Thottamkara represented our community. The Holy Eucharist continued with Bishop Bosco Puthur as the main celebrant. Cardinal Alencherry in his homily stated that the installation of Bishop Puthur was a great blessing for the Syro Malabar Catholic Church. The mass ended with words of thanks from Bishop Bosco Puthur. The function ended with the snehavirunnu. On 26 th at 10am, a meeting was held for all the Syro Malabar priests from all over Australia and New Zealand. The meeting was presided by Bishop Bosco Puthur; the Bishop shared his dreams and discussed future plans for the smooth running of the new diocese. Only four lay people attended the meeting and I was the sole lady representative. The meeting was followed by a holy mass celebrated by Bishop Bosco along with 6 other bishops. Accepting the request by Fr Joy, Bishop Bosco agreed to visit the Syro Malabar Community in Auckland on May 11 th The evening culminated with us visiting some of our friends from Auckland now living in Melbourne and Fr Joy s cousin Mr Thomas Thottamkara. They took us to see kangaroos. We had dinner at Mr Thomas s house who then they took us to our accommodation. The next day on 27 th, Mr Johnychen took us to the Ta Pinu Marian Centre in Bucchus Marsh, a pilgrim centre. The area is owned by Malteeze community. There are sculptured stations of the cross starting from the monument of our Lady and ending at the chapel on top of the hill. The stations of the cross are slightly different from ours. The 1 st station is institution of the Holy Eucharist and Priesthood, then the agony in the garden and so on. From there, we went shopping, then to our accommodation and had the special lunch prepared by Albi and Johnichen. We reached the airport at 3.15pm for the 4.40 flight, but the flight was delayed by 2hrs. Fr Johny Menacherry joined us on our way back. By midnight, we arrived in Auckland. I thank God and the Syro Malabar Parish Council members for giving us the opportunity to witness this wonderful event which is a historical land mark in the growth of the Syro Malabar Church. 7 Messages P A G E 7 Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen (Luke 24:5). These were the words spoken by the angels to the women who came to visit the tomb where Jesus was buried. This is the good news. Our God is the God of the living. Women, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for? (John 20:15). Jesus asked these questions to Mary Magdalene when he appeared to her. Jesus continues to ask for these questions Mary Magdalene looked for Jesus but what are we looking for in life?. Finding an answer to this question would solve a lot of problems in our life During this lent, we received a lot of blessings from the Lord; we have had a good retreat led by Father Davis Pattath CMI and team from the Jerusalem Retreat Centre, Trichur; every Friday we had the Way of the Cross followed by Holy Qurbana and Holy Hour; every Sunday Catechism followed by Holy Qurbana. Furthermore, the Syro-Malabar Eparchy of St Thomas the Apostle, Melbourne and the visit by His Excellency Bishop Bosco Puthur is an added blessing. We raise our minds and our hearts in gratitude to the Lord for these blessings. I take this opportunity to thank all those who contribute to the running of our Syro Malabar Mission in Auckland. To mention a few; the Syro Malabar Mission Council, Catechism Teachers, BCC Coordinator, Bulletin Editors, Website Manager and all others who extend their wonderful support. Let us continue to work for the growth of our Mission and the spread of the Gospel. May the risen Lord bless you all with peace and happiness. With every best wishes Fr Joy Thottamkara CSsR Chaplain Syro Malabar Catholic Mission Auckland

Happy Easter to you all! P A G E 8 Jesus is Risen, Alleluia! The appearance of Risen Jesus to Mary of Magdala is a very moving episode. Mary s resurrection experience was only the climax of her discipleship, preceded by other experiences. In fact, Mary had made a long journey of faith as far as her relationship with Jesus was concerned. There was a time when Mary did not know Jesus. Her life was her own affair. In fact, her life was not even her own; she was possessed by a legion. It was Jesus who had set her free. But once she was set free by Jesus she began to follow him. That is the first stage in her faith - from not knowing to following Jesus. Once she knew Jesus she began following him. She did it her own way. She followed him by sitting at his feet and listening to him. Jesus quotes her example to Martha, on one of his visits. She followed him by looking after his needs. In fact, she is even there at the sight of the crucifixion. She has followed him on the way to Calvary. That brings us to the second stage of her faith journey - from knowing to following. From Following to Experiencing this is the second stage: This die-hard following is what leads her to the experience she has on that first Easter morning. That experience of hers was an intense experience of the presence of the risen Christ in her, outside her... wherever she went. That experience was a reward as it were that Christ has for those who follow him faithfully. That s the second stage of her faith journey - from following to experiencing. From faith experience to Responsibility: - The third stage is the responsibility that flows from her faith experience! Christ asks her to share that experience. She is given the responsibility to make the resurrection and her experience known to those who need to know that. That leads to the fourth stage- from experiencing to witnessing like an apostle. from experiencing to witnessing like an apostle. The risen lord challenges us to reflect on our journey as Christians and places before us a model for examination (From following, experiencing, responsible and witnessing) On this Easter let us thank Jesus for his resurrection and thank God for our lively faith. May Mary Magdalene be our model in faith! He is risen, alleluia! Big thanks to the Syro-Malabar community for your love and support! May the Risen Lord give you all joy, peace and prosperity! Rev Fr Joy Poonoly CSsR Provincial Superior Liguori Province, Mattoor, Kalady, Kerala

P A G E 9 My dear ones in Christ, I wish you all great happiness, joy and peace from the risen Lord. I am glad indeed for all your co-operation during the holy week and Easter season. With your prayers, sacrifices, hard work, love and above all by grace of our Lord, all our Easter celebrations were splendid. The risen Lord tells us that there is no Easter Sunday without Good Friday and there is no Good Friday without carrying our cross patiently until we submit our soul back to the creator-the heavenly Father. So let us try to be Christ to this world which is filled with tears, blood sheds, calamities, wars and disharmony. Instead of looking at the world and blame it for its darkness, let us light a candle which we can, and walk in the light of truth and help others to do the same. Let us pray sincerely to God to make us an instrument of his peace like St. Francis. Let the risen Lord hide you in his wounds and bless you with all the joy of his resurrection. Canonization of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII With lots of love and prayers Jobinachan.

A short note on Lent P A G E 10 Ash Monday is the first day in the Christian holy season of Lent, and begins about 50 days before Easter. What are the ashes all about???. The ashes are gathered from the burned palms on Palm Sunday of the previous year. It is worn by Catholics as a sign of the cross simplifying, repentance, humility and renouncing pride. When the ashes are drawn on the forehead, it is proclaimed Turn away from sin, and be faithful to the gospel The history of wearing ashes symbolically goes back to the Old Testament. We don t wear ashes to proclaim our holiness but to acknowledge that we sin and are in need of repentance and renewal. During Lent we focus on Turning away from sin The Main Three aspects of Lent are: Fasting, praying and Alms Giving. FASTING is abstaining ourselves from worldly pleasures and luxuries to lead a simple and holy life. PRAYing acknowledges that we are not totally self-sufficient and have to rely on God. Almsgiving symbolises that what we have is a gift from God and is not meant just for us but to be shared with others. Remember, the holy season exhorts us to turn away from sin and come closer to God. Lent prepares us for Easter, the BIGGEST celebration in the liturgical year Liya Jose Year 9

Everyone wants to hear it. They search far and wide. They think it s past the seas or up in the heavens. But it s closer than we all think. It is on the tip of our tongue. Deep in our hearts, imprinted by God, waiting to be let out. Children of God PAGE 11 Once we realise it is our mission to take it to the ends of the world. To share it with everyone. When we hear this message we have the choice to listen and take it in or to ignore it and continue to carry the burden of life. The word is the good news on the coming of our saviour. Giving us a chance to turn away from our wrong doings. A chance to get back on track. To find what we lost. Once we surrender to God. We are His most treasured possessions. We are the children of God By: Jenice Sunny K Year 8 Happiness Happiness tastes like a cloud that fall from the heavens. It gives you a fuzzy feeling inside. Happiness sounds like twinkling glitter dust shimmering in the light. It looks like a double rainbow with the sun setting down. Happiness smells like the pollen from roses and sunflowers. It makes you think of all the wonderful joys in your life Athulya Shaji Year 6

Only a bird PAGE 12 I woke up in the morning and waited for the light but it didn t come. I yawned as I waited for the Sun to shine but it didn t rise. I stretched my feet as I waited for the clouds to move but they didn t part. I walked to and fro as I waited for the wind to ruffle my feathers but it didn t. I hopped around on the branch as I waited for the air to whistle in my ears but it didn t. I moved back for a head start; gradually picked up my speed and accelerated so fast that as I jumped and spread out my wings, I rose like the leaves in autumn. I waited to pick up a breeze with the plumage I had but there was none. I plummeted straight to the ground so fast that I hit the ground with a BAM! I thought I would be the centre of commotion but there was no one around. I looked up from my position and immediately realised why. For how can there be sun when He is dead? How can there be light if He isn t here? How can the clouds part when they're too bitter to move? How can the wind howl and make a sound? When the breeze itself has no air, And life itself has ceased. How could I be the centre of commotion? When the Creator who became man is rejected by His own creation? How could there be anyone around, When the Earth itself has lost its weight? How can the morning bloom? When God Himself is weeping. I rise my eyes to Heaven as it begins to cry, and with my feathers drenched, bid my final goodbyes, To the Son of Man, who they left there to die, I bow my head, as I, only a bird, take flight. Ann Mary Jose Year 9

The Kingdom of God PAGE 13 Jesus, the son of God, preached to us the kingdom of God. So what is the kingdom of God? Why did such an important figure of the universe preach it? How did he preach it? All these are questions that many philosophers and theologians have been trying to answer for many centuries. This essay will provide you with knowledge on the things concerning the kingdom of God; but know that we cannot explain everything about the Kingdom of God because it is beyond human comprehension, and it will take many books, more than the whole world can contain, to write about what Jesus said about the kingdom of God. The aspects we cover here are the way Jesus preached this kingdom, namely through his miracles, parables, his community and finally his death. Jesus preached the Kingdom Of God through his miracles. St. Thomas Aquinas has provided us with definitions of what a miracle is. In our common parlance we understand a miracle as something that cannot be explained by the laws of nature but must be attributed to the direct activity of God. The Latin word miraculum literally means something to be wondered at. Jesus miracles helped gain him followers as he exercised his divine authority through his miracles, gaining people for salvation that was to come. Today miracles still happen in various places, the church puts sufficient effort in legitimatising miracles that happen today. These miracles are a sign of God s holy presence in our lives even today, and they are also a sign for the beginning of an establishment of the kingdom of God on earth (Realised and Proleptic Eschatology). The gospels records various accounts of Jesus miracles and how it helped strengthen the faith of his disciples. Secondly Jesus used parables to make us understand the kingdom of God. A parable is a metaphor or a simile, drawn from nature or common life, arresting the reader by its vividness or strangeness, leaving the mind in sufficient doubt about its precise application to tease it into active thought (C.H. Dodd). Jesus used parables to help the hearer relate to his message and change his/her views on certain aspects on divine or earthly things. He used parables like the Mustard Seed and the Great Banquet to give us an insight on what the Kingdom of Heaven was like. Other great parables like the parable of the lost sheep help us to realise our sinfulness and God s great mercy and kindness in giving us the precious gift of life, furthermore it broke the barrier between the righteous and the sinners making the perfect society for the kingdom of God (Social Eschatology). Thirdly Jesus showed us what the Kingdom of God was like by the people he chose to be with him. His compassion and inclusion of the marginalised, like the tax collectors, sinners, and women, showed us that the kingdom of God was not based on social statuses but on the purity of heart. He also chose more respectable members of the society and all of his disciples were chosen by him. His disciples were always under threat and had to break away from the society and follow Jesus instructions. Through the symbolic act of choosing his 12 apostles he reconstituted Israel and prepared us for the kingdom of God to come (Apocalyptic Eschatology). Jesus choice of followers caused problems with the Jews leaders who viewed themselves higher and more righteous than everyone else. contd

P A G E 14 PAGE 14 Jesus death was the most symbolic way to show that the Kingdom of God was already and not yet here (Proleptic Eschatology). Jesus died for the sins of mankind so that God may have mercy on them and see them fit for his kingdom. Jesus reformed the sacrificial practices in the temple with his own sacrifice on the cross. Jesus realised that he was part of Israel s and the whole world s story and was the climax of these stories before the full resolution of the kingdom of God came. Those who were responsible for Jesus death thought that they had defeated him but in Jesus eyes he was victorious as he had completed his ministry from God. His death helps us realise the love of God the father, who gave his only son, for our sake and the sake of the whole world that we might be saved from all our sins and join with him in heaven. In conclusion, you hopefully now have a better insight on what the kingdom of God is and I have hopefully opened your eyes to experience God s love and mercy. Jesus through his ministry helped us to imagine what the Kingdom would be like. Let us open our hearts to his parables, strengthen our faith through his miracles, be his true followers and disciples, and realise God s love and mercy through his death so as to experience the Kingdom of God. Jacob Raji Anithottam Year 11 God s Family Through this Easter Special Edition of the Rainbow, Team Rainbow proudly introduces Mr Jose Joseph and Family as part of the God s Family Column. Mr Jose Joseph and Mrs Jomini Jose are exemplary members of our community belonging to the Mangere Family Unit. Mr Jose is an active member of our parish council and involved in many strategic decisions of the council taken in furtherance of our mission. Jomini is a Sunday School Teacher for year 3 and does an excellent job of instilling faith in our kids. The couple is blessed with three great kids who are equally involved in our mission activities like Sunday School and Choir. This devoted catholic family through their catholic practices is truly an inspiration for all of us. I am Jose Joseph; born and brought up in Kerala, India. I am married to Jomini Jose and blessed with 3 great children Ann Mary, Jobin & Angel. We both work in the hospital. We came to New Zealand in 2002 with our eldest daughter, Ann Mary. contd

O sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvellous things, his right hand and his holy arm have gained him victory (Psalm 98:1) PAGE 15 In my father s house there are many dwelling places, if it were not so I would not have told you that I go to prepare a place for you John 14(2). These words came true when we began our life in New Zealand. It was not easy to settle down in a strange country with no friends and family but we experienced the love and protection of our Lord. We learned that the word of the Lord is sweeter than honey. Our two younger children were born here. In our sickness and difficulties, we experienced the miraculous love of the Lord and the affection of Mother Mary and St. Joseph. During our initial times in New Zealand, we missed much more than anything the Syro Malabar church and rites; the confessions in Malayalam, catechism classes for children, Holy week celebrations, family units, regular prayers, feast celebrations, retreat etc. I remember bringing catechism books in Malayalam and English from Kerala to teach Ann Mary at home until we started the catechism classes. All these times we prayed and dreamed about the SYRO MALABAR MISSION that we are blessed with today. When I look at the Syro Malabar Mission today, I can only praise the Almighty God for his ever lasting love for us through this Mission. I thank the Lord for sending Alexachan, Joyachan & Jobinachan for initiating and continuing the work of the Lord here. I pray that the name of the Lord be glorified always through this mission.
