Again it was pinted at that if traffic culd %e brught thrugh the city ver Bradway, it wuld-be f great advantage t lcal merchants since it wuld bring the traffic by their drs and they wul.l naturally benefit cnsiderably. At the clse f the discussin it was decided t lay the matter ver until the next meeting. 3 FRIDAY, AUGUST 7,1931 THE SOUTH AMBOY CITIZEN I'AGE THRBH, HIBERNIANS DUMP MECHANICSVILLE WINKT HALF Green Team Victr in Sunday I Struggle That Decides First Half Hnrs. ' The almst ibreath taking duel between the Hibernians and the Mechanicsville A. A..fr first half hnrs in the city lp, terminated n Sunday with a victry fr the Hibernians, 4-2 Ṫhe battle was a hard fught ne frm the time the first batter stepped t the plate until tht> last ne had walked away frm it. Ryan, in the bx fr the Hibernians, pitched a wnderful game. His delivery prved exceedingly baffling t the bys wh g hme thrugh the "Hle in the Wall" and when they did cnnect, Ryan's team mates gave him wnderful supprt. Particularly praisewrthy was the wrk f Bulman at secnd base. Tha slim Hibernian made stp after stp that seemed almst impssible f accmplishment and time after time brught the fans t their if«et. Mskal started ff in the bx fr the Mechanicsville utfit but was replaced by Triggs in the sixth when the Hibernians ibegan hammering his deliveries. Mechanicsville led ff with the scring, gaining ne run in the third when Burkard singled, Mskal fanned, 3. Zdanewicz walked and was caught ff first, Mnaghan t Gilvary. Then Stlte was walked and W. Zdanewicz singled and Burkard crssed the plate. Frm then until the sixth, whea the Hibernians went ut in frnt, there was n scring. Mechaniesville struggled valiantly t increase the lead they had gained and the Hibernians fught, just as valiantly t prevent their ding s. The Hibernians leap t fame Came in the Sixth when fur runs were scred and they galiid a lead which the Mechanicaville, utfit, try us they might, were um {We t vercme. Fleming singled t left, Mnaghan hi!-. a. neat duble and ityan hit a nasty bunder that Kennedy was unable t capture and was the means,df permitting Bulman &n<j Mnagh»n. t scre while the Hibernian pitcher gained iecnd, Ryan., went t third n Stlte'a thrw t the plate. PIPE DREAMS By Nick O'Tine J The hair raising finish in the first - sectin f the city league has apparently made the city baseball minded and I heard the statement made after the ihibernian-mechanicsville game n Sunday that there are mre teams in the city and mre players than ever befre in its histry. Many an ld timer wuld have smiled if he had heard this statement, I imagine. If anything the bys f years back tk their baseball even mre seriusly than we d tday. Hw many are there tdny wh are familiar with the recrds and persnnel f sme f the teams that played ball and fught v;.here in years past? Fr instance "lere are the Silver Kings, The Stan, Silver Stars, The Mdcka, Swaiip Angels, St. Mary's, The Victrs aftd a hst f thers. Oh, yes, We must nt' ibrget the Oriles wh gt their name frm the unifrm they wre. The team was rganized and the unifrms purchased but n name bad betin selected. When they inada their appearance in their new unifrms, bright red nes that wuld attract a bull a cuple f miles away, smene said that all they needed nw was a name. The suggestin was ' made that they lked like Oriles in their bright red array and the name was immediately adpted. It was a different game the bys played in thse days frm what we knw tday. Fr years such thing* as catcher's glves, masks, chest prtectrs and shin guards were unknwn. The catcher std well back f the batter and caught the ball n the bunce when it was cnvenient t d s. When necessity required, hw-,6ver, he bravely stepped up clse and caught.the ball in his bare hands. The ld time catcher culd always be dtected by his fingers which were bent in all srt f grtesque shape: frm the punishment they received. At ne time the rules f the gamp required that the pitcher serve up whatever kind f ball the batter requested. If the man at the plate was,-nn adept at kncking a lw ne ver th fence, he culled fr such a pitch ai d,jthe pitcher was bligated t cmply with his request r be penalized, j Many t, ntill remember the ld ' styl hm plate which was nt the five crnered affair familiarly in us2 tday but which was diamnd shaped. There were tw friends in twn n which th teams f bygne days perfrmed. Star Field, named after thfamus Stars was situated betveen the present lcatin f th Sun Oil Cmpany's plant and the cal dcks. It was n wnderful field but game* n it had t b scheduled accrding t the tide, the flld waa under wnter at fld tide and ften when th tide had risen t its height. Th Pst Ofllce illd, lcated n Bradway whre the Empire Theatr nw stands was the spt wher "Village Team" s enlled because it was mad up f playrs wh came frnt the nrthern sectin f th city, then.knwn as the "ViUng" prfrmed. Th Pst Office field had ne at- tractin f* the lcal Babe Ruths f that dny that Star Field did nt ps If th bntter nt th plate had th ability t place hits wher h<> wanted t h was sure t make a hm run if h was lucky enugh t cm t bnt when n train passed th field. All that was necessary was t< lift ne ver the passing train an< the fielders wuld have t stand im patiently beside the tracks until th> train passed and they culd rccvc the ball. Anther trick was t knck the ba thrugh th pen dr f a passini bx car and mre than ne ball vrai lst and mre than ne hme rui made by this methd. Star Field had ther attractin; fr bth players and spectatrs Clse by the entrance t the fielii std a htel, which Is still standin. but des nt enjy the ppularity did in thse days. Here players am fans gathered befre the game t mnk predictins and quench thcii thirst and after the game t ffei excuses and quench the same thirst The players n the visiting team al ways dressed in the back rm f th saln and th hme team dressed ii a hall further up th 3tr«et. It wai nt wise,t have the tw teams dres' in the same place, fr fear a flgh 1 wuld start and there wuld b in ball eame. Abut fifty per cent f the specta trs went t a ball game t see tin playing and the ther fifty per cn attended in the hpe that a figh wuld start. Many wh believe that bascba games tday draw big crwds shul. have seen the attendance at sme l thse games. Trlley cars had nl been lng in existence in this sectii and as an inducement t teams t< arrange games ut f twn the cm pany permitted ball players t trave! t and frm games free f charge They made it up n the fans and many times three r fur and evei a half dzen trlley cars laded ti capacity accmpanied the team 0' an ut f twn game. It wuld be a hard task t cnvince the player f ther years that baseball tday has a greater attractin than it did in years past. He can'l see it that way and I dn't knw thai yu can 'blanu him. Saw a bus lad f wmen rushini ver Bradway the ther day. Thi sign indicated they were members f n a "CnnMAtrn "Clidge fn-r fr Prnsidpnfc" President 1 league. There must be smething in this Ciidge fr President" talk aftei all. It lks as if the wmen still pull fr the "strng, silent men." My Chief Bwery Infrmer gives me sme interesting infrmatir abut the nw type f high pwe rum that has recently been placed n sale dwn lwer Augusta street. H tells m that they cme frm far and near fr the stuff. Fr ten cents yu can get a drink that makes yu believe yu ai-e standing befre Presi dent Hver nt Washingtn; fr 25* yu can get enugh t believe yu are in Eurpe and I understand the ther night a fellw bught fifty cents wrth and thught he was travelling arund the wrld and it tk tw hurs t bring him back.
