Hebrews 10A (2014) Over the New Year s hliday, a lt f families like t g t the mvies And when yu g t the mvies, yu are sure t see cming attractins f future mvies Smetimes the thse trailers give away t much f the mvie s plt and smetimes even spil the ending But if a mvie trailer dne prperly, it will tell yu just enugh t get yu excited abut seeing the mvie when it s released Yu can think f the Old Cvenant as Gd s mvie trailer f cming attractins Fr example, the OC prvided a place where Gd wuld dwell amng men, but it wasn t Gd s true hme It allwed fr sacrifices t address the prblem f sin in Israel, but thse sacrifices didn t actually satisfy Gd And the OC created a priestly rder t intercede fr the peple f Israel, but that intercessin wasn t sufficient t appease Gd s wrath S what value did the OC serve? It was Gd s cming attractins trailer fr the New Cvenant The New Cvenant cleansed a true, permanent dwelling place fr Gd The New Cvenant prvided a sacrifice t cver all sin And the New Cvenant wrks thrugh a Priest Wh can bridge the gap between men and GOd That s what the writer f Hebrews wants his audience t understand, withut cnfusing the mvie trailer fr the mvie itself Once a mvie debuts at a theater, the trailer isn t needed nr des it prvide value Imagine is yu saw a mvie trailer fr sme exciting new mvie, and yu were s eager fr the mvie t appear in the theaters And then after a lng wait, the mvie finally debuts 2014 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Hebrews 10A (2014) 2 f 12 But if instead f rushing t the theater t see the mvie, yu just watched the mvie trailer ver and ver again? Smene wuld prbably tell yu t stp watching the trailer...just g see the mvie S it is with the Old and New Cvenants Once the New appeared, then the Old was n lnger needed Nut in a sense, that s what these Jewish believers were trying t d They were replaying the mvie trailer ver and ver again instead f seeing the mvie They were cntinuing t participate in the practices f the Old Cvenant even thugh the New Cvenant had debuted That s why we ve seen the writer carefully walking his audience thrugh varius elements f the Old Cvenant s he can cmpare them t the New With each cmparisn, he hws frm scripture hw the New Cvenant is full meal deal While the Old Cvenant was a preview f a cming attractin S far, the writer has cvered the better priesthd and a better tabernacle in the New Cvenant, and nw he s ready t explain the better sacrifice f the Old That better sacrifice is Christ Himself, f curse At the end f chapter 9, we saw that the true tabernacle f ur High Priest Christ in Heaven had t prepared just like the earthly tabernacle was It required a cleansing f sin thrugh an applicatin f bld The sin that cntaminated the tabernacle was that f Satan s rebellin, accrding t Ezekiel 28 And the nly bld that culd prperly cleanse the Heavenly tabernacle was that f Christ Himself S as Christ died and was resurrected, He brught His wn bld int the Heavenly realm fr applicatin f the altar 2014 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Hebrews 10A (2014) 3 f 12 Paul sums this up in Clssians 1 Cl. 1:19 Fr it was the Father s gd pleasure fr all the fullness t dwell in Him, Cl. 1:20 and thrugh Him t recncile all things t Himself, having made peace thrugh the bld f His crss; thrugh Him, I say, whether things n earth r things in heaven. Let s pick up at the end f chapter at this pint where the writer begins t transitin t his final cmparisn f Old and New sacrifices Heb. 9:24 Fr Christ did nt enter a hly place made with hands, a mere cpy f the true ne, but int heaven itself, nw t appear in the presence f Gd fr us; Heb. 9:25 nr was it that He wuld ffer Himself ften, as the high priest enters the hly place year by year with bld that is nt his wn. Heb. 9:26 Otherwise, He wuld have needed t suffer ften since the fundatin f the wrld; but nw nce at the cnsummatin f the ages He has been manifested t put away sin by the sacrifice f Himself. At sme pint fllwing Christ s resurrectin, He ascended int Heaven in physical frm and in that frm He entered the Heavenly tabernacle What an awesme and amazing spectacle it must have been when the victrius, glrified, death-cnquering King returned t the Heavenly realm having cmpleted the plan the Father assigned Chirs f angels and all the saints Christ led free frm captivity must have rejiced like never befre The scene must have been as glrius as any we culd pssibly imagine, because Gd s plan f redemptin was reaching it s climax That s the mment the writer is describing here As Christ entered a tabernacle made f precius stnes, brilliant shining glass and gld, He entered the Hly f Hlies, the writer says This is a place n human hand has every tuched, since it was made by Christ Himself, Wh is the maker f all things Our earthly tabernacle lined with gld and fine linen was a mere cpy f this superir structure It culdn t cmpare t the glry f that heavenly structure 2014 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Hebrews 10A (2014) 4 f 12 And then as the Sn f Gd returned t His Heavenly hme, nw living in the frm f a man, He entered with His wn bld Hw did the Lrd deliver His bld int Heaven? The nly thing we have t guide us is the Old Cvenant ceremny that pictured this mment As the writer explains in v.25, the high priest entered the Hly f Hlies carrying a basin with the bld f a bull The bld was drained frm the bdy f the bull while at the altar And then it was carried int the Hly place t be applied t the mercy seat Therefre, we shuld assume that as the Lrd entered the earthly tabernacle, sme f His bld was taken at the altar and then He Himself carried it int the Hly place as the writer says In vs.25-26, the writer says Christ s sacrifice in the Heavenly temple was superir t the pint that it nly needed t happen nce Unlike the priests in the Old Cvenant wh repeated the sacrifices daily and annually, Christ s sacrifice was a ne-time event Christ s death and His applicatin f bld in the tabernacle happens nly nce at the cnsummatin f the age But the death f an inncent man is sufficient t cver the sin f any guilty man wh accepts that payment And Christ s death has limitless pwer t save Nt just ne persn but a multitude f humanity were redeemed with His single act f sacrifice Because His act f sacrifice satisfies the Father as payment fr the sins f thse wh believe Paul describes this relatinship in Ephesians 2014 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Hebrews 10A (2014) 5 f 12 Eph. 1:18 I pray that the eyes f yur heart may be enlightened, s that yu will knw what is the hpe f His calling, what are the riches f the glry f His inheritance in the saints, Eph. 1:19 and what is the surpassing greatness f His pwer tward us wh believe. These are in accrdance with the wrking f the strength f His might Eph. 1:20 which He brught abut in Christ, when He raised Him frm the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, Eph. 1:21 far abve all rule and authrity and pwer and dminin, and every name that is named, nt nly in this age but als in the ne t cme. Eph. 1:22 And He put all things in subjectin under His feet, and gave Him as head ver all things t the church, Eph. 1:23 which is His bdy, the fullness f Him wh fills all in all. Paul describes the saving pwer f Christ s death fr the sake f the elect He asks the church t knw the hpe f the calling we ve receive frm Gd And then he describes the the riches f glry f Christ s inheritance in the saints Christ s inheritance refers t His resurrected life and the kingdm He rules afterward, and that glry is als fr us, the saints, thse wh believe First, we have this surpassing greatness f Gd s pwer t raise dead bdies back t life And fllwing His resurrectin, Christ was seated in the Heavenly places, fllwing His applicatin f bld in the tabernacle After His wrk in the tabernacle was cmplete, the Lrd tk His seat next t the Father In easter culture, sitting dwn designated that a servant had cmpleted his wrk S t be seated means t cease frm wrk Frm this seated psitin f authrity, Christ nw may rule ver all Creatin, including ver His Church And By His Spirit, Christ indwells His church 2014 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Hebrews 10A (2014) 6 f 12 And all thse Christ indwells are cvered by His sacrifice as Paul ges n t explain Eph. 2:4 But Gd, being rich in mercy, because f His great lve with which He lved us, Eph. 2:5 even when we were dead in ur transgressins, made us alive tgether with Christ ( by grace yu have been saved), Eph. 2:6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, Eph. 2:7 s that in the ages t cme He might shw the surpassing riches f His grace in kindness tward us in Christ Jesus. The prcess f ur redemptin began while we were spiritually dead and nt even lking fr a Savir Because the Lrd lved us, He extended His grace t us t make us alive in Christ - We were brn again by Gd s Spirit Then ntice, Paul says we were raise and seated with Christ (past tense) in the heavenly places What heavenly places is Paul taking abut? And hw can we be said t be raised there already? Paul s referring t the mment Christ entered the heavenly tabernacle and the Hly place n ur behalf t make intercessin fr us with His bld Remember the Old Testament High Priest? He entered the tabernacle n behalf f Israel because they weren t allwed t enter n accunt f their sin He was the natin s representative, s He entered there in their place Likewise, Christ was ur representative and High Priest when He ascended and entered the Heavenly tabernacle As He entered, He applied His bld t the mercy seat By His wrk f sacrifice, He was assuring us f a resurrected life After Christ s bld cleansed the tabernacle, the Lrd s wrath fr ur sin was appeased 2014 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Hebrews 10A (2014) 7 f 12 We can say we have been raised with Christ, because nthing stands in the way f ur resurrectin He cnquered death n ur behalf, s He assures we will be raised Finally, we have been seated with Christ, in the sense that we have ceased wrking fr ur salvatin by ur faith in Christ We are seated in the sense that we have n mre wrk we can perfrm t assure urselves salvatin In that sense, Paul says we have been raised and seated with Christ His wrk in the Heavenly tabernacle has accmplished everything we needed It s as gd as dne Christ s nly ffered a single sacrifice in the tabernacle, and yet that ne-time sacrifice is sufficient t save many This is very different than the Old Testament sacrifices, which happened ver and ver again The reasn fr the difference is Old Testament sacrifices were never acceptable payment fr the sins f mankind Thse sacrifices were nly sufficient t frgive the natin f Israel fr breaking the terms f the Old Cvenant They maintained fellwship between the natin f Israel and Gd under the Old Cvenant They culdn t recncile a man t Gd nr satisfy Gd s wrath fr sin But the sacrifice f the New Cvenant des recncile us t Gd and satisfy the wrath f Gd In past weeks, I explained that the New Cvenant sacrifice was better in this way because it was the death f an inncent man in ur place While the sacrifices f the Old Cvenant 2014 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Hebrews 10A (2014) 8 f 12 And t help explain why, the writer draws ur attentin t why all men die Heb. 9:27 And inasmuch as it is appinted fr men t die nce and after this cmes judgment, Heb. 9:28 s Christ als, having been ffered nce t bear the sins f many, will appear a secnd time fr salvatin withut reference t sin, t thse wh eagerly await Him. The pening phrase in v.27 cnnects this thught t the previus discussin thrugh a cmparisn The writer taught that Christ s ne death was enugh t cver ur sins Christ didn t have t die multiple times, nce fr each persn r each sin Because Christ s death was a payment that the Father accepted n behalf f thse Wh are in the New Cvenant And the explanatin fr why that wrks is fund in the reasn each f us must die in the first place Inasmuch...r in accrdance with Gd has appinted men t die, and then cmes judgment He means that the death we experience is a cnsequence f ur sin, which Gd requires as a judgment fr death As Paul says in Rmans, the wages f sin is death S each man dies because we all have sinned This is the relatinship Gd established, that the sin f a man requires the death f a man It s because f this relatinship that Christ culd die just nce and save many by that sacrifice In v.28 the writer says Christ was ffered nce t bear the sins f many Christ s death was an ffering, a sacrifice Christ made f Himself t the Father As Jesus said in Jhn s Gspel 2014 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Hebrews 10A (2014) 9 f 12 Jhn 10:14 I am the gd shepherd, and I knw My wn and My wn knw Me, Jhn 10:15 even as the Father knws Me and I knw the Father; and I lay dwn My life fr the sheep. Jhn 10:16 I have ther sheep, which are nt f this fld; I must bring them als, and they will hear My vice; and they will becme ne flck with ne shepherd. Jhn 10:17 Fr this reasn the Father lves Me, because I lay dwn My life s that I may take it again. Jhn 10:18 N ne has taken it away frm Me, but I lay it dwn n My wn initiative. I have authrity t lay it dwn, and I have authrity t take it up again. This cmmandment I received frm My Father. Jesus as ur Gd Shepherd came t earth n a missin t rescue His sheep, thse the Father has given t Christ, the elect And His plan f rescue depends n the Shepherd laying His life dwn fr His wn, bth thse in the fld f Israel and fr Gentiles f anther fld And the Father lves the Sn because the Sn is willing t lay His life dwn He lays His life dwn intending t live again, Jesus says And Sn will als take up His life again And then ntice, n ne tk Christ s life...jesus put his wn life dwn Jesus made Himself a sacrifice in rder t please the Father, accrding t Jhn 10:17, and this He did accrding t the Father s cmmand That means the Father was prepared t accept the Sn s death as a suitable payment fr the sins f thse wh are Christ s sheep It makes sense...the Father cmmanded Christ t lay dwn His life t save the sheep the Father was giving Him And then Christ did that very thing S naturally, we wuld expect the Father t be satisfied by that payment fr all wh are Christ s sheep That s why ne death is sufficient t pay fr the sins f many Because the Father directed that He was willing t accept that payment 2014 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Hebrews 10A (2014) 10 f 12 S nw that Christ has met the payment requirement that the Father stipulated, He can return, the writer says, withut respect t judgment fr His sheep We can lk frward t the return f Christ withut fear f judgment because we knw the Father has already been satisfied by Christ s sacrifice The requirement that ur sin be fllwed by judgment has already been met S nw Christ s return is a cause f eager anticipatin by thse wh have been saved by His sacrifice We dn t fear a Gd Wh is pleased in us Of curse, nt all men have been cvered by the atning wrk f Christ Sme are still in their sins because they have nt placed their trust in Christ All thse wh die win their wn sins will n lk frward t the day puts all His enemies under His feet Instead, they are amng the enemies wh Christ defeats at appearing at the Great White Thrne judgment Nw we reach chapter 10 in which we find the writer ffering prfs frm the Old Testament that the sacrifices f the Old were never Gd s desire Heb. 10:1 Fr the Law, since it has nly a shadw f the gd things t cme and nt the very frm f things, can never, by the same sacrifices which they ffer cntinually year by year, make perfect thse wh draw near. Heb. 10:2 Otherwise, wuld they nt have ceased t be ffered, because the wrshipers, having nce been cleansed, wuld n lnger have had cnsciusness f sins? Heb. 10:3 But in thse sacrifices there is a reminder f sins year by year. Heb. 10:4 Fr it is impssible fr the bld f bulls and gats t take away sins. Heb. 10:5 Therefre, when He cmes int the wrld, He says, SACRIFICE AND OFFERING YOU HAVE NOT DESIRED, BUT A BODY YOU HAVE PREPARED FOR ME; Heb. 10:6 IN WHOLE BURNT OFFERINGS AND sacrifices FOR SIN YOU HAVE TAKEN NO PLEASURE Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Hebrews 10A (2014) 11 f 12 Heb. 10:7 THEN I SAID, BEHOLD, I HAVE COME (IN THE SCROLL OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME) TO DO YOUR WILL, O GOD. Heb. 10:8 After saying abve, SACRIFICES AND OFFERINGS AND WHOLE BURNT OFFERINGS AND sacrifices FOR SIN YOU HAVE NOT DESIRED, NOR HAVE YOU TAKEN PLEASURE in them (which are ffered accrding t the Law), Heb. 10:9 then He said, BEHOLD, I HAVE COME TO DO YOUR WILL. He takes away the first in rder t establish the secnd. Heb. 10:10 By this will we have been sanctified thrugh the ffering f the bdy f Jesus Christ nce fr all. The Law Gd gave t Israel was designed t expse it s weakness and it s purpse as a shadw, r a trailer f cming attractins First, it required that sins be repeated ver and ver again That repetitiveness emphasized that the sacrifices weren t slving the prblem f sin And that s why the wrshippers in Israel never felt their cnscius cleansed by thse sacrifices They lacked the pwer t bring men int a right relatinship with Gd Instead, they just reminded men ver and ver again that sin requires death and the Law isn t slving that prblem The prblem as we said earlier is that the bld f animals isn t sufficient t slve the prblem f ur sin Because the sin f a man requires the death f a man Yet we see that Gd designed the Old Cvenant t use animal sacrifices Then bviusly Gd never intended the Old Cvenant sacrifices t address ur sin And since Gd never intended t slve ur sin thrugh the Old Cvenant sacrifices, He tld Israel in the scriptures that the slutin was the Messiah In Psa 40 the Lrd says He didn t desire sacrifices Instead, the Lrd had prepared a human bdy fr His Sn t ccupy 2014 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Hebrews 10A (2014) 12 f 12 And in that bdy, the Sn f Gd wuld d the will f the Father And in pleasing the Father by laying dwn His life, the Sn wuld prvide us with the true slutin t ur sin - He culd becme a sacrifice that can please the Father Then in vs.8-9, the writer cncludes with pwerful lgic If the Lrd says He has nt taken pleasure in sacrifices ffered fr sin And then later, the Lrd says He is ding the will f Gd by dying as a sacrifice fr men Then lgically, we must cnclude that any later sacrifice that pleases Gd must take pririty ver any earlier sacrifices that Gd said didn t please Him S it is with us nw as believers As v.10 tells us, we have ben sanctified made hly by the ffering f the bdy f Christ Once and fr all we ve been made hly Yu cannt be mre hly than yu are in Christ s sacrifices Yu cannt be mre acceptable t Gd than yu are when yu accept the death f Christ in yur place Yu cannt add any wrk r perfrm any sacrifice t imprve n yur psitin But if yu have nt accepted the sacrifice f Christ, then there is nthing yu can ever ffer Gd... Nt wrk, n sacrifice, n prayer, n chant Nthing will satisfy Gd s wrath fr yur sin except the death f a man That death can either be yur wn Or it can be Christ s death in yur place 2014 Verse By Verse Ministry Internatinal ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.
