Scpe and Cntent The Genealgical Sciety f Utah (GSU) and the Wiscnsin Histrical Sciety cperated in a prject t brrw and film Wiscnsin church and cemetery recrds f interest t genealgists. The prject prduced 311 reels f micrfilm cntaining recrds frm 32 Wiscnsin cunties, dating frm the 1830s t the 1980s. Psitive cpies f the micrfilm are available at the Wiscnsin Histrical Sciety and the Area Research Centers; each lcatin huses different prtins f the cllectin. The micrfilm has been gruped accrding t cunty where the church r cemeteries are lcated and each cunty grup has been assigned a unique call number. Due t the filming prcess, there is ccasinally a recrd f a church r cemetery frm a different cunty lcated n a reel f film predminantly f anther cunty, but generally a reel f micrfilm almst always cntains nly recrds f churches and cemeteries frm ne cunty. Each call number therefre represents recrds primarily f ne cunty (call number Milwaukee Micr 70 fr Milwaukee cunty recrds fr example). An exceptin is Stut Micr 25 which cntains recrds frm bth Dunn and Barrn cunties. Accuracy f this finding aid is limited by readability f the film, cmpleteness f the recrd, and staff knwledge f freign languages and scripts. In-depth research int church histry was nt dne by Archives staff. Sme recrds d nt name the church which created them; in thse cases the infrmatin recrded by the filmer is used and ften is the present custdian f the recrd. Missing infrmatin, particularly the recrd type in the reel lists, is due t the ccasinal necessity f wrking frm camera peratrs' reprts r ther finding aids rather than frm the film itself. The reel lists als indicate the languages in which the recrds were written and the GSU film number, in the event that a duplicate needs t be rdered. The reel lists include brief descriptins f the recrd types (birth, baptism, marriage, etc.); this infrmatin was cmpiled frm the film itself. Occasinally sectins, especially languages and recrd types, were left blank when incmplete infrmatin was available. Place Names A few lcatins are nt nw gvernmental units but apparently were in use at the time the recrds were created. In cases where churches mved r merged, the recrd is still listed under nly ne lcatin. Smetimes a single recrd cntains infrmatin crssing cunty lines, especially in the case f missins r circuits. If exact lcatin is nt clear, rather than misled the user with a pssibly incrrect place name, the mre general lcatin f just the cunty is used. Thus it is imprtant fr the user t be

3 imaginative in searching fr place names. Church and Cemetery Names Church names, if in a freign language, are usually entered in the English frm if ding s will bring all recrds fr ne church -- bth befre and after the church adpted English as its language. Saint is smetimes spelled ut and smetimes abbreviated t St. making it necessary fr the user t search bth ways. Denminatin is listed as it appeared in the recrds with n additinal research dne n denminatinal changed that have ccurred in the 150-year scpe f this cllectin. Thus lines are nt always exact between, fr example, Methdist and Methdist Episcpal r Evangelical Lutheran and Lutheran. In sme cases the present denminatin is indicated fr a church that has changed thrugh the years. Fr example, United Church f Christ may indicate churches which were frmerly Cngregatinal r Evangelical and Refrmed. Sme knwledge f church histry is useful t the user.
