1 THE EAGLES VIEW Brothers: APRIL/MAY 2016 ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST COUNCIL BOCA RATON, Fl. THESE MEN THEY CALL KNIGHTS My wife and I just returned from a cruise to the Panama Canal. Part of the shipboard entertainment was Stryker, the piano player. He told us his personal story and how he once had a very good life and a thriving business and then lost everything through no fault of his own. He spent 18 months homeless and living on the streets of Hollywood, CA. Then, as he stood on a ledge and contemplated suicide, he remembered his mother and decided he did not want his death to be the last thing his mother remembered about him. He got down from that ledge and called his mother and as in the story of the prodigal son, pleaded to his mother for forgiveness and to let him come home. She immediately sent him plane fare and he did go home, and after recuperating for about a year, got a job playing piano and singing on cruise ships. He says of his mother She gave me life twice. He also reminded us that when we see those homeless people begging on the streets, they weren t always there. They all have a story and we need to understand that. The power of mercy is incredible. Ron Sawchuk Of the 100 paying council members, 72 members have paid their annual dues. It is not too late to make your payment if you have forgotten. Please contact our Retention Chairman, Michael Lungarini at to discuss options if paying is a financial burden. The Council is still obligated for the per capita expenses for each member to the Supreme and State Offices even though members are delinquent in paying their dues. Therefore it s important that all members pay their dues. Our total council membership is 124 and our quota for new members is 8. After gaining 6 new members last month we are now 75% of our goal. Our quota for new insurance members is 3. To date we do not have any members that have signed up for insurance benefits. Please contact our Field Agent to discuss those valuable benefits and help us meet the Star Council Award for the third year in a row. This Award is a financial incentive to our Council, allowing us to reduce the cost of our per capita expenses to Supreme. Contact Brother Ted Kelley at who is coordinating this event. We are need of a few more volunteers to fill the 2 hour soliciting slots. The donations will go to Horses for the Handicapped (H&H) of South Florida at Tradewinds Park, Coconut Creek, FL. H&H serves children and adults with physical, cognitive and emotional challenges. Please help make this event as successful the last one. Boca Helping Hands Saturday April 30 th a Boca Helping Hands event is planned at Boca Glades Baptist Church, Judge Winikoff Rd. Boca Raton participants are needed to unload the truck and set up tables, tents and chairs, also to help with packing of pantry bags and at the end to load the truck and clean up. Contact Brother Richard Thum at who is coordinating this event. This year we have done two events with Boca Helping Hands and they been very good and rewarding. Casino Night 2016 Casino Night 2016 is planned for Saturday May 14 th for 6:00-10:00pm. We need sponsors and volunteers. If you know of any businesses or individuals that may be interested contact Brother Cliff Shepard at , or cs99photo@yahoo.com. In addition, volunteers are needed to help with the gaming tables. Knights of Columbus Annual Scholarship College Award St. John the Evangelist Knights of Columbus will be awarding our 13 th Annual $ Scholarship Award to a graduating high school senior who is a parishioner of St. John s parish. 4 COUNCIL HAPPENINGS LONG SLEEVE SHIRT DRIVE On Tuesday February 23rd and Wednesday February 24 th Deacon William Ferguson was station just outside the Parish Office door collecting men and women s long sleeve shirts for field workers. In the two days 158 men and women s long sleeve shirts were collected. This year the shirts were donated to St, Mary s Catholic Church in Pahokee, Florida which has a very large migrant community. St. Mary s Church Store and Pantry opened in 1994 and serves not only Catholics but all needy of the community and surrounding areas. Standing with Deacon Bill is Ms. Fran Larios coordinator with St. Mary s Church Store and Pantry. Deacon Bill and Bro. Larry Bower taking a break on St. Francis of Assisi bench before driving back to St. John s Deacon Bill and the Knights of Columbus thank everyone who donated shirts. If you missed the shirt drive this year, another drive is planned for next year. An announcement will be published in the church bulletin at the beginning of the next Lenten season. 4

5 Boca Helping Hands (BHH) Thursday Family Dinner Night Helping Life Program An evening was spent helping to feed needy families at the Food Center of Remillard Family Resource Center also known as Boca Helping Hands. Participants were (l,r) Brother Knight Larry Bower, Janet Burkhardt, Pina and Luis Forero and Brother Knight Alan Daniello. Family Night Dinner is served every Thursday evening from 4:30 to 6:00pm to needy families. Only families are admitted that evening and entertainment is usually provided for the children. For our evening, BHH provided a dog handler who brought along a black Labrador Retriever to teach the children how to care and handle dogs. Deanna Duke BHH s Volunteer Program Manager met us at the Food Center area and gave us brief orientation and tour of the facilities. Brother Knights Larry and Alan were working in the warehouse filling zip lock bags with bagels and dinner rolls that had been delivered that day, Janet, Pina and Luis worked in the food center area serving drinks and distributing pantry bags to the families. It was a very busy evening and the time went quickly but it was a very rewarding evening knowing that we were helping people and practicing mercy in our faith, hope and charity. In addition to the Helping Life Program for Boca Helping Hands, a group of Knights and parishioners helped with the Pantry Bag Distribution Program on Saturday January 30 th. The group was large enough to divide into two groups. One group went to the West Boca location at Boca Glades Baptist Church to help with the setup of the tents and distribution of the pantry bags. Others remained behind at Remillard Family Resource Center in Boca Raton and worked in the warehouse marking bar codes on cans and grocery items. We thank Richard for organizing this great event. Another BHH event is planned for April 30 th. 5 to 8 participants are needed for this event. For information contact Richard Thum at or at richardathum@gmail.com. 5

6 Habitat For Humanity (HFH) Neighborhood Revitalization Helping Life Program The weather on Saturday March 12 th in Boynton Beach was perfect to paint a HFH house. Participants included St. John s parishioner Patty Haggerty, Brothers Jim Melvin, Scott Spencer, Ted Kelley, David Herbert, Larry Bower, Kurt Dombro, Grand Knight Brian White, Habitat volunteer (blue shirt), and HFH construction manager Art Story. Crystal Spears, NRP Coordinator standing with Tara the home owner. Tara was able to pay off her 30 yr. HFH mortgage in 12 yrs. In return, HFH provided a new paint job to the exterior of the house. 6

David be careful that you don t get any paint on that new KOC shirt. Everyone had a good time and with the many hands using paint brushes and rollers the house got painted in less than 4 hours. We thank Patty for being part of our team and without a team effort the project wouldn t have gone as well. HFH was very pleased with our work which kept the project on schedule for painting the final coat the following week. Everyone walked away with a good feeling in their heart knowing that they had done something good for a neighbor during this Lenten season. We thank Ted for organizing this great event. 9 COUNCIL SUPPORTING THE NEEDS OF THE CHURCH The St. Patrick Dinner Dance was a great success! The food was delicious and the DJ had everyone dancing. Everyone had a great time! A thank you goes to Ron Sawchuk, Bruce Kendall, Mike Lungarini and Larry Bower for helping with the setup and cleanup of this event South Florida MG Walk was held on March 13 th. A donation of $100 was made to Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, Inc. for Gianna the daughter of Brother John Vittorini. Acknowledgement: Our own Father Martin Devereaux and Msgr. John McMahon are celebrating 50 years in the priesthood Father Devereaux is a retired campus chaplain of Lynn University and Msgr. McMahon is a retired pastor of St. Joan of Arc. Memorial: Jask S. Parisi passed away Saturday February 27 th, at the age of 96 years old. Jack was a member of our council and a Knight for 45 years. His name will be added to our new Memorial Plaque. Helping Life Program Sponsored by St. John s Knights of Columbus Ron Sawchuk Helping Life Program Coordinator To support All Life, following the Catholic Church s teaching from conception to natural death Starting this fall the Knights will begin a program which will encompass the entire parish. You do not have to be a Knight - men, woman, and children can participate. The purpose of this program is to help people in our community who are in need. Programs, Contact Coordinator, Mission: Supporting Life Charites Jim Etue Through programs we help the families in need, the new born, and the homeless. Boca Helping Hands -- Richard Thum BHH provides food and emergency assistance to meet basic needs and long-term solutions to break the cycle of dependence. Habitat for Humanity -- Ted Kelley Creating a world where everyone has a decent place to live. To put God s love into action to bring people together to build homes, communities and hope. Prayer for Life God of life and love, you created us in your image and sent Your Son to bring us life. Instill in us a respect for all life, from conception until natural death. Empower us to work for justice for the poor. Nourish us that we may bring food to the hungry. Inspire us to cherish the fragile life of the unborn. Strengthen us to bring comfort to the chronically ill. Teach us to treat the aging with dignity and respect. May we be especially sensitive to the life of the handicapped and incarcerated. 10 Message from Harry Orlando, Lecturer Brother Knights, A healthy and joyful 2016 to all of you and your loved ones in this Jubilee Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis. As of today there has been no response to the call to each of the brothers for a selection of a passage from the New Testament which is most meaningful to them. At present, the idea is to collect from each of you one parable or passage from the New Testament which resonates with you personally. You may if you choose give a short explanation of the reason for your choice. If with the approval of our membership, we believe it would be worthwhile to purchase a hardcover booklet incorporating these passages as part of the heritage of Council for future generations of our members. Comment The work we do for our church and community is the greater of our tasks. They are the fruits which we are known.
