THE EAGLES VIEW April/May 2017 ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST COUNCIL BOCA RATON, Fl. THESE MEN THEY CALL KNIGHTS Worthy Brothers, Well it's hard to believe that we are getting ready to fill our officer roster for next year. At our next business meeting we will be nominating candidates. Please consider becoming one of our officers for next year. Congratulations to our new 2nd and 3rd Degree Brothers I know you had a rewarding experience, and hope you will consider joining us as an officer. We have had a very successful year and hope we can build on this for next year. We still need to work on membership for this year if we hope to attain Star Council. Please encourage your friends or maybe someone that you see every week at church to join our Council. Sadly we lost two long time Brothers who were also Past Grand Knights in the last couple of months. Our prayers are with the families of Tony Guiliano and Joal Kuczenski who served The Knights of Columbus proudly, may they Rest in Peace. I know they are enjoying their Heavenly Reward. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our Council to make this such a fantastic year. May God continue to watch over us and help us to carry on his good works. Wishing you and your families a very Blessed Easter season may The Risen Lord bless you and your families during this most Holy Season! God Bless! Vivat Jesus! Mike Lungarini Grand Knight IN SOLIDARITY WITH OUR PRIESTS 1

Brother Joal held the Patriot Degree and was a past member of the color guard. He was a past Grand Knight for our council and an active council member for many years. We extend our sincere sympathy and prayers to Josephine his wife and to the family and friends of Joal. MEMBERSHIP Our goal this year is 9 net new members and 3 insurance members. We welcomed our newest Brother Michael Razzo who received his exemplification into the Admission (1 st ) degree last month. As of 3/31/17, our council has 131 members. We have gained a total of 13 new members this fraternal year however we have also lost 14 members for either failure to pay dues or through their voluntary resignation from our order. Our annual quota to receive Star Council Award is 9 net new members however the loss of 14 members leaves our total member gain for the year at minus 1. This makes our goal for the remaining 3 months of the year 10 new members. Let s see if we can get over the finish line and find those 10 more men who wants to be a Knight. We are in need of a membership director; please speak to Grand Knight Michael if you are interested in the position. If you have any changes to your address, phone number or address please get those changes to Jim Falzone/Financial Secretary. Jim can be reached by either phone or or JFAL64@gmail.com 2

COUNCIL HAPPENINGS Please welcome our newest brother Michael Razzo who was exemplified in the Admission (1 st ) degree by Our Lady Of Lourdes Council team on Wednesday night, March 15 th. Welcome Michael to our council when you see him. Bro. Michael wasted no time before joining brothers David Herbert, Hector Falgone, Scott Spencer, Jim Moore, Charles Coward, and Doug Aguililla for their Exemplification into the Formation (2 nd ) degree and later into the Knighthood (3 rd ) degree with Bro. Al Daniello joining them in Knighthood. These men are now Full Knights. Congratulations! The Exemplification for Formation and Knighthood took placed on Saturday March 25 th at St. Vincent De Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach. This beautiful place allowed 12 Seminarians to be a part of the Exemplification. There were 37 candidates for the Formation and 67 candidates for the Knighthood. The very large group from our region showed that the Knights of Columbus is very active in our area. 4 Dinner and Duo: Friday, February 3 rd the Parish Hall was the place to be if you wanted to hear beautiful music performed by Yasa Poletaeva, violin, and Darren Matias on the piano. The ensemble Contrast Duo put on a performance that was truly spectacular. Everyone was captured by the beauty and liveliness of their music. The dinner catered by Tomasso s Pizza & Subs was great and we thank the students from the West Boca High Culinary class for helping to serve the meal. Also thanks to all the Brothers who helped with the set up and cleanup and a special thanks to the people who attended making this event successful. Also a special thanks to our Grand Knight Michael Lungarini for making the arrangements with Contrast Duo, the caterer and spending many long hours in promoting this great event. Some of the proceeds went towards painting of the church. Thursday Night Dinner: On Thursday February 9 th, Boca Helping Hands (BHH) held a Thursday Family Night Dinner from 4:30 to 6:00pm serving a hot dinner to needy families at their Remillard Family Resource Center located at 1500 NW 1 st Court, DGK Larry Bower and Parishioner Janet Burkhardt volunteered to work on the serving line. Volunteering at BHH s has been a very rewarding experience said DGK Larry. We take it for granted that everyone in our community is well taken care but there are families in our community that are in need and need a helping hand to get their lives back on track and that s what BHH does. If you are interested please contact Brother Charles Coward at (561) or ccoward4@verizon.net for more details of future events or volunteering at BHH.

Tootsie Roll Drive: Saturday February 25 th & Sunday February 26 th a Tootsie Roll Drive was held at the Old Navy store in Shadowood Shopping Square. Brother Ted Kelley would like to thank Brothers Dan Gagnon, Al Daniello, GK Mike Lungarini, DGK Larry Bower, Ken Bolen, Larry Angle, Steve O Hara, Doug Aguililla, and Deacon Charles for helping with the solicitation of donations. Brother Ted was happy to report that we did better than last year and collected $ that will be donated to Equine-Assisted Therapies of South Florida, Inc at Tradewinds Park, Coconut Creek, FL. Equine-Assisted Therapies serves children and adults with physical, cognitive and emotional challenges. If you would like to participate in this event the next time, please contact Brother Ted Kelley at or ted@kelleyalliance.com Social Meeting Game Knight: Team Trivial Pursuit was the activity for our second Game Knight on Monday, February 27 th. Four teams competed for prizes while playing team jeopardy style trivial pursuit. It was a fun night for everyone testing their Baby Boomer knowledge. However, the trouble for some of us baby boomers is we forgot half of what we knew when we were young. Despite that, it was a nice evening just to meet members and their wives in a social gathering. DGK Larry Bower emceed the trivia questions along with Bro Cliff Shepard assisting with the awarding of points to the winning team. Team GK Mike Lungarini, his wife Karen and Brothers Jim Melvin, Scott Spencer and Charlie Coward, his wife Debbie and Father Michael O Flaherty won the first game. While the team of Bro. Bruce Kendall, his wife Betsy, Bro. Larry Angle, his wife Rosalie, and DGK Larry Bower s wife Marilyn won the second game. The chicken wings and sandwiches were great as always and thanks to Bro. Cliff Shepard and his committee for organizing this event. Other social events are planned for after the summer. 5

Long Sleeve Shirt Drive: Thank you Deacon Bill for your support and effort to this worthy cause. Boca Helping Hands (BHH): Long Sleeve Shirt Drive was held on Tuesday and Wednesday March 14 th & 15 th. 153 men s and 48 women s long sleeve shirts were collected just outside the Parish Office by Deacon Bill Ferguson with the help of Brother Charles, his wife Debbie, Brothers Al Daniello, Ellie Baptiste, and Jim Melvin. This year the shirts will be taken to St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store, at 3757 S. Military Trail Lake Worth, FL. The long-sleeve shirt campaign brings awareness to farmworkers, who go to great lengths to shield themselves not only from the sun, but from pesticides as a part of their daily life and work. Our first event of the 2017 with Boca Helping Hands was on Saturday March 18 th at Boca Glades Baptist Church on Judge Winikoff Rd., West Boca Raton. Brother Knights and their family members who participated were Bro. Charlie Coward, his wife Debbie, Bro. Scott Spencer, PGK PDD Ron Sawchuk, Bro. Doug Aguililla and DGK Larry Bower. They, along with other volunteers, carried pantry bags and produce and frozen meat bags to the client s cars. In addition they helped with setting up tents and sorting and packaging the produce and frozen meat items before distribution. Giving back to the community during the Easter season fulfills spirit of helping others. If you missed this event, events are now planned for the 3 rd Saturday of every month. If you are interested please contact Brother Charles Coward at (561) or ccoward4@verizon.net for more details of future events or volunteering at BHH. Social Meeting Stations of the Cross Monday night, March 27 th was an evening of reflection and prayer. Our parish deacons William Ferguson and Charles Parlee along with Brothers Jack O Conner and Joseph Galea lead the Council members, their families and parishioners in the Stations of the Cross. COUNCIL SUPPORTING THE NEEDS OF THE CHURCH At February s council meeting, GK Michael Lungarini presented a $1,500 check from Council to Father Michael O Flaherty to help with the cost of painting of the Church. Father O Flaherty was happy to receive the money. Painting of the church and parish hall is a very expensive project for the Parish. It also includes not just painting of the walls but pressure cleaning the roof, caulking and sealing cracks and the painting of the floor in the Gathering Area. Father O Flaherty informed us that an anonymous donor had agreed to pay for the project. We are so thankful to have that person in our parish. ISN T IT GREAT TO BE A KNIGHT OF COLUMBUS 6

Helping Life Program Sponsored by St. John s Knights of Columbus Ron Sawchuk Helping Life Program Coordinator To support All Life, following the Catholic Church s teaching from conception to natural death Last year the Council started the Helping Life Program to encompass the entire parish. You do not have to be a Knight - men, woman, and children can participate. The purpose of this program is to help people in our community who are in need. Programs, Contact Coordinator, Mission: Supporting Life Ministry Jim Etue Through programs we help the families in need, the new born, and the homeless. Last month a group of committee members visited Boca Helping Hands (BHH) and organized the shelves that hold the hygiene items and also made up some hygiene kits for distribution. Our group has volunteered and is committed to maintaining this area in the Warehouse for BHH. In the future, we will be asking parishioners to donate travel size hygiene items to be used in these kits. Details for the Boca Helping Hands Hygiene Kits program will be forth coming in the church bulletin. A group of committee members visited Birthline/Life Pregnancy Care Center on March 23 rd for a tour of their facility lead by Katherine Bowers/Director. It was amazing to see how well organized the facility was. This year the Parish s donation was valued at over $9,400; a 52% increase over last year s donation and was the largest donation received from a parish. Congratulations to those that supported this worthy cause. There are many babies and their Moms that have benefited from our donation. Each of you has made a significant difference. AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse, Inc.) A birthday party is planned with AVDA on April 22 nd at 10:30am. The birthday party will be for the mothers and their children that are residents of the facility to provide a happy social setting. The Council and the Ladies of St. John s agreed to donate monies to help with the purchase of food and drinks for the party. Plans are being made to provide a social activity for the party which AVDA encourages all groups to do. Right to Life protects and defends the most fundamental right of humankind, the right to life of every innocent human being from the beginning of life to natural death. On the first weekend of each month, a Rose for Life will be brought up at each Mass and placed in the sanctuary as a reminder of our Christian commitment to respect the dignity of all human life. Boca Helping Hands Charles Coward BHH provides food and emergency assistance to meet basic needs and long-term solutions to break the cycle of dependence. The next two Boca Helping Hands events planned at Boca Glades Baptist Church, Judge Winikoff Rd. Boca Raton are on April 15 th and May 20 th participants are needed to unload the truck and set up tables, tents and chairs, also to help with packing of pantry bags and at the end to load the truck and clean up. Contact Brother Charles Coward at or ccoward4@verizon.net coordinator of this event. Habitat for Humanity -- Ted Kelley Creating a world where everyone has a decent place to live. To put God s love into action to bring people together to build homes, communities and hope. We have another Habitat for Humanity Group Build Day scheduled for Saturday, June 3 rd. This will be another Neighborhood Revitalization/Cleanup project. We will supply the labor at an assigned site from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. No tools are needed. We will be assigned tasks, provided on-site training if necessary, and away we go. Our last participation was a very good experience for all of us. We painted a house for a family in Boca Raton at our last event. There was good team spirit and we all felt good about helping out. Contact Brother Ted Kelley at or tedkelley@kelleyalliance.com coordinator for this event. 7

Prayer for Life God of life and love, you created us in your image and sent Your Son to bring us life. Instill in us a respect for all life, from conception until natural death. Empower us to work for justice for the poor. Nourish us that we may bring food to the hungry. Inspire us to cherish the fragile life of the unborn. Strengthen us to bring comfort to the chronically ill. Teach us to treat the aging with dignity and respect. May we be especially sensitive to the life of the handicapped and incarcerate. Bring us one day into the glory of everlasting life. We ask this through Christ or Lord. Amen Council Reflection: There is no family that does not know how selfishness, discord, tension and conflict violently attack and at times mortally wound its own communion; hence there arise the many and varied forms of division in family life. But, at the same time, every family is called by the God of peace to have the joyous and renewing experience of reconciliation, that is communion reestablished, unity restored. In particular, participation in the sacrament of reconciliation and in the banquet of the one Body of Christ offers to the Christian family the grace and the responsibility of overcoming every division and of moving towards the fullness of communion willed by God, responding in this way to the ardent desire of the Lord: that they may be one.
