Contrast Duo an internationally acclaimed violinist and pianist ensemble performed at our annual Christmas Party on December 1 st. Contrast Duo performed last spring at our Dinner and Duo dinner and everyone liked them so much that we invited them back again for our Christmas Party. This was one of our all-time great events. Every seat in house was taken and of course the food was excellent. Families and friends enjoyed an evening of fine music that you would expect from two great musicians. GK Michael would like to thank everyone who helped make this event successful including the setup and cleanup crews, the decorating crew, and our caterer and serving crew. Without everyone s participation we would not have had such a successful event. The proceeds will go to support the good works of the Church. 4

5 Boca Helping Hands (BHH): Two monthly events with Boca Helping Hands was held on Saturday, December 9 th and January 13 th at Boca Glades Baptist Church. Pictured from the January 13 th event are Brother Charles and Debbie Coward, Brothers Dan Gagnon, Santo Carollo and PGK Brian and Mary White. They along with other volunteers, carried pantry bags, produce and frozen meat bags to the client s cars. In addition we helped with setting up tents and sorting and packaging the produce and frozen meat items before distribution. If you are interested, please contact Brother Charles Coward at or ccoward4@verizon.net for more information. Equine-Assisted Therapies of South Florida, Inc.: On December 2 nd from 9am to 2pm, the Equine-Assisted Therapies of Coconut Creek held The Horse Shoe. The Horse Shoe is a ceremony where riders in front of their family and friends demonstrated what they have achieved during the 10 week session. It was amazing to see the riders, young and old with special needs maneuver their horse through the obstacle course. Brother Ted Kelley, Program Director had made arrangements for our Council to help with handing out awards to the riders for this event. Standing with Molly Murphy (Executive Director) and Austin (competing young rider) are Brothers Larry Bower, Bruce Kendall, PGK PDD Ron Sawchuk, Ted Kelley, Charles Coward and Jim Melvin (not pictured) and parishioner Janet Burkhart (back row). A donation of $1,500, was presented to Molly Murphy (Executive Director) by Brother Michael King. The money was from the Tootsie Roll Drive proceeds this past year. Bro. Ted Kelley who chairs this program stated that this year was our best year ever for raising money for this great organization. For more information or if you interested in volunteering for this great organization contact Bro. Ted Kelley at or ted@kelleyalliance.com or David Plath, Development Director (Equine-Assisted) at or david@equineatsf.org. 5

6 Pancake Breakfast: Our second Pancake Breakfast of the year was on Sunday, January 14 th, in the Parish Hall after all Masses. A combination of good participation from the Brothers and good attendance from the parishioners paid off for a successful event. The purchase of two Cephalonia frying pans made the cooking of the scrambled eggs easier and faster. SK Jim Falzone and Bro. Ken Bolen oversaw the cooking duties. SK Tony Guiliano helped our newest member Santo Carollo crack eggs. It takes a while to crack 5 dozen. Thanks to all the brothers who helped to make this pancake breakfast successful. Habitat for Humanity: A Habitat For Humanity Neighborhood Revitalization event was held on January 20 th in Boynton Beach. The project required the team to apply a sealer to a house in preparation for painting which will be done later by another group. Bro. Ted Kelley said the day was cool, thank goodness, and we all left covered in white sealer. It was a wonderful day knowing that we made a difference in a family s life. Wearing their St. John s Knights Of Columbus T-Shirts are Brothers SK David Herbert, Dan and Alina Gagnon, PGK Brian White and Ted and Sharon Kelley, also pictured are friends Adam and Donna Rubenstein, a friend visiting from Chicago, the Homeowner (Veteran) and other future Habitat homeowners that were doing their required participation time. We all worked under the supervision of HFH NRP Coordinator Crystal Spears. ISN T IT GREAT TO BE A KNIGHT OF COLUMBUS 6

8 Helping Life Program Sponsored by St. John s Knights of Columbus Ron Sawchuk Helping Life Program Coordinator To support All Life, following the Catholic Church s teaching from conception to natural death In 2016 the Council started the Helping Life Program to encompass the entire parish. You do not have to be a Knight - men, woman, and children can participate. The purpose of this program is to help people in our community who are in need. Programs, Contact Coordinator, Mission: Supporting Life Ministry Jim Etue Through programs we help the families in need, the new born, and the homeless. Visits were made by committee members to Boca Helping Hands (BHH) the past two months to organize the shelves that hold the hygiene items and made some hygiene kits for distribution. Birthline/Life Pregnancy Care Centers: Babies-R-Us sometimes has items for donation for Birthline and the Supporting Life group has agreed to pick up and deliver those items to Birthline. Birthline will accept used clothing in good condition for small children. The Giving Tree was placed in the Church vestibule two weeks before Christmas requesting donated items ranging from infant and small children clothing, strollers, diapers, blankets, car seats and pak-n-plays. The donations were delivered in early January and a final accounting is not available in time for this publication. Their Director and the entire staff is extremely grateful to the St. John s parish family for their generosity. A final report will be published in the church bulletin. Thanks to all for making the Giving Tree a tremendous success. AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse, Inc.) The Birthday Party that was planned in November was rescheduled for January 20 th. Group members Bruce and Betsy Kendall, Robyn Morigerato, and Johanna Petro led the birthday party at AVDA facilities. The party was attended by many children and mothers. The group provided entertainment with games for children to play, cake and ice cream for refreshments and afterwards birthday gifts for the children. Everyone who attended said they had a good time and Nicola, ADVA coordinator for this event was very appreciative of what the Supporting Life group did. The Supporting Life Ministry group would like to thank the Knights of Columbus and the Ladies of St. John s for their monetary donations to help pay for this heart felt event. Right to Life protects and defends the most fundamental right of humankind from the beginning of life to natural death. On the first weekend of each month, a Rose for Life is brought up and placed in the sanctuary at each Mass as a reminder of our Christian commitment to respect the dignity of all human life. We are always looking for new members. 9 Prayer for Life God of life and love, you created us in your image and sent Your Son to bring us life. Instill in us a respect for all life, from conception until natural death. Empower us to work for justice for the poor. Nourish us that we may bring food to the hungry. Inspire us to cherish the fragile life of the unborn. Strengthen us to bring comfort to the chronically ill. Teach us to treat the aging with dignity and respect. May we be especially sensitive to the life of the handicapped and incarcerate. Bring us one day into the glory of everlasting life. We ask this through Christ or Lord. Amen HAVE YOU INSURED YOUR MOST VALUABLE ASSET?
