Valentine Pot Luck Dinner and Bingo Please join us on Monday February 12th at 6:00 pm at the Fridley History Center for our annual pot luck dinner followed by bingo. Each bingo winner will be able to make a selection from the prize table. This free event is sure to be a fun night! Bingo! Save The Date! Saturday June 16th! By popular demand, the Fridley Historical Society will again host the Manomin on the Mississippi tour. It will occur during 49er Day on the afternoon of Saturday June 16th. Stops on the narrated bus tour include the Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts and the historic Reidel House. We will update the next newsletter once we finalize the details.

3 January February 2018 The Record Volume 31 Issue 1, Page 3 Festival of Trees Christmas Exhibit The Fridley Historical Society held the Festival of Trees Christmas exhibit on Saturday and Sundays from November 18th through December 17th. This beautiful exhibit was well received and featured heritage trees like Nordic, Italian, German, Swedish, Finnish, USA, and Fridley. Other theme trees included Charlie Brown, Peace on Earth, Gratitude/Past, Barbie, Pioneer, Classroom, and Boys & Girls Scouts. Thank you to all of the volunteers who put in countless hours putting this exhibit together. We enjoyed all of the visitors who came to view it! Fridley Council-Member-At-Large Bob Barnet gave the opening remarks.

6 January February 2018 The Record Volume 31 Issue 1, Page 6 Fridley Historical Society Board Meeting Thursday December 7th, 2017 Present: Pete Bonesteel, Mary Bonesteel, Mark Bonesteel, Mary Sue Meyers, Mary Ann Hoffman, Dorothy Gargaro, Judy Anderson, Lori Greiner, Allen Taylor, Gerry Maeckelbergh, Julie Doth The meeting began at 4:30 pm with the Pledge of Allegiance. Gerry Maeckelbergh update on Unity Hospital records storage Jerry, the Chair of the North Suburban Hospital Association, gave a brief history of the organization. One of the final items that they will do as they cease operations is to refund monies to the five cities participating. Regarding storage of their records, the items must be held in storage for six to ten years, depending on the specific items involved, and then to be sent on to archives. The Fridley Board of Directors needs to decide on a course of action and write up a proposal by the February 1st board meeting and submit it to the association by Wednesday February 14th, Julie Doth submitted a letter from the group Positively Fridley to the Fridley Historical Society inviting us to join in this project. Positively Fridley is a grassroots volunteer organization formed to promote the positive aspects of the city. It is undertaking a public art initiative that can visually enhance our community. Margaret Maeckelbergh and Julie Doth are spearheading the project. The group will meet at city hall on the third Tuesdays of the month to decide on what art form this initiative will take. It will be an art form based on the history of Fridley to highlight our culture and diversity, engage the community, and build awareness of all of the good things happening in our city. Any resident or locally owned business is welcome to join. Secretary Report- Lori submitted the minutes from the November 2nd 2017 board meeting. Al made a motion to approve, seconded by Judy, and all in favor. Treasurer Report- Judy submitted the following: Balance Sheet as of November 30th, 2017 and the Profit and Loss Comparison. Al made a motion to approved, seconded by Mary Ann, and all in favor. Committee Reports: Programs and Events: The Kindergarten Art Fair will be held on Saturday December 9th during our Christmas exhibit. 201 students plus their families are invited and Santa will make an appearance as he heard that cookies will be supplied. City and Family History: Dorothy shared the sad news that James Ehlert passed away. In memoriam his family has donated $500 to the historical society. Our sincere condolences are extended to his family and we thank you for the donation. Maintenance: Al reported that he and Rick are continuing maintenance around the property which includes light replacement, bathroom upgrades, sidewalk salting, furnace filters, and the handicapped parking sign. Archives: Mark reported that work is continuing on the public safety display room. He recently acquired two more mannequins. The first department donated a complete modern uniform and badge. Membership: Mary Ann stated that she will submit a full report at the January board meeting. The dues renewal form will be in the next newsletter. Old Business: 2018 Fridley Home and Garden Tour: Mary Ann stated that a meeting will be held at the history center at 6pm on Monday January 8th. Some representatives from Anoka County and Fridley will discuss the event. New Business: Manomin on the Mississippi Tour: The 49er Day committee has requested that he hold the tour during the event. The board is receptive to the idea and will discuss this further. The meeting was adjourned at 6:00 pm. Respectfully submitted, Lori Greiner

7 January February 2018 The Record Volume 31 Issue 1, Page 7 Fridley Historical Society Board Meeting Thursday January 11th, 2018 Present: Mary Ann Hoffman, Allen Taylor, Judy Anderson, Dorothy Gargaro, Lori Greiner The meeting was called to order at 4:30pm. Secretary Report: Lori submitted the meeting minutes from December 7th, Judy made a motion to approve, seconded by Mary Ann, and approved by all. Treasurer Report: Judy submitted the balance sheet as of December 30th, 2017, the Profit and Loss Comparison as of December 31st, 2017, and the December 31st, 2017 Franklin Templeton Statement of Accounts. Mary Ann made a motion to approve, seconded by Al, and approved by all. Committee Reports: Maintenance: Al stated that a pest extermination company will be coming out to do an inspection and spray. Membership: Mary Ann reported that we have received $62.50 in dues and $ in donations. Programs and Events: Mary Sue recapped the upcoming events. The Valentine pot luck dinner and bingo event will be held on Monday February 12th at 6pm, the Lasagna dinner and auction will be on April 21st, and a trivia contest on February 24th. City and Family History: Dorothy distributed a paper illustrated the format that we will use to make our proposal to North Suburban Hospital District for record storage. We will hold the Manomin on the Mississippi river tour on the afternoon of June 16th. She suggested that Lori participate in the Positively Fridley public art project to which Lori agreed. OLD BUSINESS: Festival of Trees Christmas Exhibit: Dorothy reported that we $ gross and a $ profit after expenses. A heartfelt thank you is extended to everyone who volunteered and attended this successful event. Also we are very pleased that two people, Diane Levesque and Cindy Ruschy, have made themselves available as volunteers! OTHER BUSINESS: A Christmas Surprise for the Fridley Historical Society: Dorothy was pleased to announce that The Friends of Fridley Education Foundation donated $2,000 to the Fridley Historical Society. We will dedicate the funds to continue our educational programs throughout the upcoming year. The meeting was adjourned at 5:45 pm.
