1 Friday Services start at 7:30 PM Saturday Services start at 10:30 AM May, 2017 A Reform Congregation Volume 12, Issue 11 FROM THE RABBI When I worked in the New York City School System, since so many teachers were Jewish, the schools were closed on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. If the schools had remained open, they would have been unsafe because so many Jewish teachers would have been absent. In addition, with Easter and Passover usually falling in close proximity to each other, the first two days of Passover usually occurred during the spring break when schools were also closed. However, in 1986, Passover and Easter occurred a few weeks apart from each other and the Board of Education voted to keep the schools open on the first two days of Passover. At the time, the United Federation of Teachers, the official name of the teachers union, estimated that about 40 percent of the teachers in the New York City School System were Jewish. Although teachers could use their allotment of paid personal days to take off during the first two days of Passover, a large number of Jewish teachers strongly protested the Board of Education s decision to keep the schools open on those days. Jewish teachers might attend a seder on the evening of the first and second nights of Passover, but most of the Jewish teachers would not attend religious services during the daytime on the first or second day of Passover. Most felt no religious obligation to refrain from working on these days and some felt no obligation to observe the dietary restrictions which the tradition imposes on Jews during Passover. But they felt that the Board of Education s decision showed a lack of respect for the Jewish community. And we Jews are very sensitive when those outside the Jewish community don t respect the traditions and practices of Judaism. But if we want others to respect our traditions, then I think we, as Jews, should also respect them. There is a practice in Judaism known as the counting of the omer. Beginning with the second night of Passover, we count seven weeks days. And the next day the fiftieth day is the holiday of Shavuot. Thus, the counting of the omer connects the holiday of Passover with the holiday of Shavuot. Passover is referred to in Hebrew as z man cheiruteinu the season of our freedom. Shavuot is referred to in Hebrew as z man matan Torateinu the season of the giving of the Law. On Passover,we celebrate the freeing of the Israelites from the shackles of Egyptian slavery. On Shavuot, we celebrate the receiving of the commandments at Mount Sinai. However, commandments restrict freedom. Freedom without restrictions results in anarchy. As Jews, we are bound by the covenant made at Sinai. We have an obligation to the Jewish tradition. We resent it when others don t respect our traditions. But what about us? Don t we have an obligation to practice our traditions? Rabbi David Weissman

There is an Oneg after services. On Saturday mornings services begin at 10:30 am. A small Kiddush is celebrated after services. FROM THE PRESIDENT: On June 7th we will hold our congregational meeting. It is important that as many of us attend as possible, as the meeting needs a quorum in attendance. A letter will go out prior to the meeting date. Please watch for it. It won't have a large cash prize enclosed but it will give you the feeling that you are part of a wonderful adventure. This congregational meeting will mark the beginning of our twelfth year. I would like us to think about how we should celebrate our Bar Mitzvah Year in For those of us that were at our Tenth anniversary party it was hailed as an evening to remember. Over the years we have been fortunate to celebrate many things together. but I think when we reach the thirteenth year it will say we have made it. Once again I want to truly thank each one of you who have volunteered your time and talents to Temple Shalom. It is each one you that makes the difference. As we welcome each new member to our congregation and welcome them into our Temple life we pray they too will share their joy and talents as each of you have. 3 3 SAVE THE DATE The annual Congregation will be held on Wednesday, June 7 at 6:30PM. Our famous pizza supper will be served. Election of officers and board of directors will take place as well as information on the position of Temple Shalom. You will receive a packet two weeks before the meeting. Please make every effort to attend as we will need a quorum. ONEG NEWS What a fabulous group of people belong to our Temple! My responsibility or, as one of our members calls me, "the Oneg Queen" has been made so easy. All Friday nights have been booked through June 23! Dates available are June 30, July 7, July 28 and all of August. So, if you have guests you want to impress, why not bring them to services and do an oneg in their honor? You really don't need a specific reason, though, so just pick a date that's convenient for you. If you have any questions about the procedure, just ask me and I'll guide you through. It's very simple and does not have to be fancy. 10 10 Sisterhood News by Laurie Ward, President Spring is upon us and thus we are coming to the end of our Sisterhood year! We have cancelled the May 8, 2017 Sisterhood Meeting which had previously been scheduled. We all have busy schedules and since we are at the end of our program year, we decided to do a short recap of our progress at the Closing Luncheon on June 1, We have had a busy year and soon we will be closing it out with our Closing Luncheon on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 12:30 pm. The menu is currently being finalized, so look for a flyer in a separate with all the pertinent information. I hope we will have a large group of us to gather for some fun and fellowship. Don t forget to RSVP asap and bring your check for next year s dues of $36.00 with you. I am looking forward to dining with you at the closing Luncheon where we will review the past year, honor our Board and committee members for their hard work and look forward to the coming year!
