SAT: OCTOBER 27 6:00pm For the Living & Deceased Members of St. Edward Parish SUN: OCTOBER 28-30th Sunday in Ordinary Time 9:00am Duke Lavella, Richard Stefanacci & Coach J.C. Bruno (Leo & Connie) Month of the Holy Rosary STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION October 14, 2018 Adult Envelopes $3, Teen/Children s $11.00 Loose $ Monthly $ On-Line Giving (25 families) $ Total $6, Amount budgeted for Weekly Offertory $7, Over / (Under) - ($1,875.20) Thank you for your generosity! If you held a mirror up to your life, would it reflect God s love and mercy? If you are struggling with this, try changing your attitude from I want more to thank you God for everything you have given me, I have enough to share. This change in perspective will bring you JOY through service to others. Please remember St. Edward Parish in your will. In taking on humanity, Jesus became like us in all ways but sin. He experienced heartache and sorrow, joy and affirmation, challenge and rejection. He suffered many things, but his message never wavered. He came as a servant in our midst, willing to accept his human lot, to transform all things with his submission to the will of the Father. His message to his disciples is clear: If you want to follow me, you must be a servant to all. FIRST READING: The two verses from the fourth and final servant song in Isaiah describe how the sinless servant of the Lord justifies many through his own suffering. He gives his life as a sin offering. The Lord accomplishes his will through his servant. Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you. SECOND READING: Despite being without sin, Jesus, our high priest, can sympathize with our weaknesses for he shares in the fullness of humanity. With confidence, we approach the throne of our high priest to receive his gifts of mercy and grace. We confess Jesus, the Son of God, risen and reigning forever with the Father in heaven. GOSPEL: To be great is to serve. To be first is to serve. The Son of Man provides the example par excellence of this teaching for he came to give his life as a ransom for many. We usually use it when people tell us details about their lives that we don t want or need to know. Today, when James and John ask Jesus a simple question, making their request for places of honor in the kingdom, a simple answer might have been in order. Instead, as he often does, Jesus answers a question with a question; today it s about drinking the cup of suffering. Then, once the others are indignant over James and John s outrageous request, he proceeds to give them what may have been too much information for followers who were simply interested in the pursuit of glory. But this information, though it can sometimes seem too much for us, is essential for our lives as disciples. In Isaiah, in Hebrews, and in Mark today, we learn this information. It is in suffering, in weakness, in self-giving service to others, that we come to understand the kingdom. It is the information we need to find our place and come to be honored in the reign of God. 5 WORLD MISSION SUNDAY Today is World Mission Sunday. We celebrate this day by remembering the revitalizing mission at the heart of our Christian faith to bring the Gospel to all! This year s theme is Through Youth To The World: Voices for Mission. Pope Francis addresses his message for this year s celebration to young people, saying, In speaking to you, I also address all Christians who live out in the Church the adventure of their life as children of God. What leads me to speak to everyone through this conversation with you is the certainty that the Christian faith remains ever young when it is open to the mission that Christ entrusts to us. The collection today for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith ensures the work and service of the Mission Church, as it supports priests, religious and lay leaders who offer the Lord s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope s missions. Thank you for your generosity. ST. EDDIE S SPAGHETTI DINNER TODAY! Join us today from 12:00 5:00pm for a delicious Spaghetti Dinner to benefit the parish! We profess it every time we recite the Nicene Creed: I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.
