Message from Mr. Frye The classical approach to instruction is called the trivium (or threefold way) and is meant to be taught in three distinct stagesgrammar, logic, and rhetoric. Grammar, as the name suggests, is meant to be taught in the elementary or grammar years, but the logic stage is designed for the middle school student. Therefore, we are exploring parent interest in adding back grades 7-8 to our program as early as next year. Look for a survey next week. These are exciting times! Cash Ticket Mania With less than a month to go, we still have many cash tickets to sell and we really need additional help. The success of our three fundraisers is essential to keeping tuition costs down and in helping to manage our budget without the necessity of adding additional fundraisers. A single leaf working alone provides no shade. The cost of running a school the size of CDT is nearly $1,000,000 per year. We cannot, and do not, make that money strictly from charging tuition. We have to look toward other revenue streams to finance our mission and this is where fundraising comes in. In order to help us meet this year s goal of selling 2500 cash tickets, here s what will be needed. First, please return all tickets stubs and money by October 16 th. Any homeroom with 100% of families having sold tickets by October 16 th will get a pizza party!! Second, consider helping the office sell some of the additional unsold tickets... even if it is 2 or 3 extra tickets.

2 Items in Today s Brown Envelope: ~Box Top flyer Next Friday, Oct 14 th students will have their picture taken. Students are encouraged to dress up for pictures or may wear their school uniform. Please note that this is not a dress down day. PTF Representatives are encouraged to be photographed on Friday as well. If needed, a picture make-up day will be scheduled. Please note that a pre-order form is unnecessary. Proofs will be sent home to parents and orders can be placed at that time. ~Virtues at Home Information for October Club Information: Unless you have been contacted, your child has been granted membership into the club(s) they chose. Safety is our #1 concern, especially at dismissal time. We will once again utilize a permission slip system for clubs. Club permission slips are available to students in our school lobby and in his/her homeroom. Each morning Mr. Frye announces which clubs are meeting the following day. Students will then either pick up the slips from the lobby or will be issued slips by their homeroom teacher. These slips must be returned EACH WEEK CLEARLY MARKED YES OR NO. This ensures proper and safe dismissal of students at the end of the day. CALLING ALL MIGHTY CELTICS: Boys currently in Grades 3-6 interested in playing CYO basketball and Girls currently in Grades K-6 interested in cheer, please visit outside the main office to sign-up. Those students interested will be contacted about registration.

3 Attention Second Grade Parents, When you know the dates for Reconciliation and First Eucharist at your church, please send in the information to Mrs. Seremet. Please include the name of your parish as well as the dates. If your child is not receiving the Sacraments please let her know that as well. We have many sending parishes in the school and this helps as second grade begins instruction of the Sacraments in religion class. Thank you. Spaghetti Dinner: The Men of CDT will once again provide a great opportunity for families to come together. 4 October s virtue is Reverence or Showing your deepest respect for God and the things of God. Why do we genuflect before a tabernacle? What is the purpose of having statues or relics? Is there a reason we use Holy Water? Adoration... what is the purpose? What makes people decide to wear blessed religious medals? Quiet and still in church... we try to teach our children to be that, why? In order to genuinely show respect, especially deepest respect for something, one has to believe in it. Believing in God and all He has revealed, or having faith, allows one to respect Him deeply. We, as parents, have the opportunity to continue to foster the growth of faith and Reverence in our children by making our relationship with the Lord a priority in our busy lives. As our faith grows stronger, in part through participation in faith-based activities (i.e. praying, reading the Bible, celebrating in Mass, attending adoration, blessing our children daily before school, etc.) our virtue of Reverence will strengthen. Practice the virtue of Reverence as a family... consider trying one of the following this week: Every time you hear or say the name of Jesus, bow your head. During this month of October, pray the rosary (or even a decade) to show Reverence toward our Blessed Mother. Discuss (and practice) Reverence, as a family (i.e. quiet, being still, focusing, having an attitude of gratitude, taking advantage of spiritual growth opportunities, etc.) Have your children find at least 5 sacramentals or blessed items in your home (i.e. Bible, rosary, Holy Water, statue, scapular, medal, etc.). Discuss why and how you show Reverence with them. Use one of the items in some Reverent way this week. We make time for so many things in our lives. Often, our children recognize our priorities and what we respect most deeply by what we choose to fit into our busy days. Let s all commit to trying to make our relationship with our Lord a priority (or if you re looking for a bigger challenge... even top priority) this week. To determine your success, you may ask your child (and yourself) for examples of how you showed your deepest respect for God and the things of God, today. How much time was devoted, this day, to the One from which all of our blessings have come? 5 Around the Neighborhood From the Diocese: Priesthood Discernment Group Are you interested in learning more about the Priesthood? The Melchizedek Project is a discernment group intended for men 18 or older. The group meets at Holy Family Church in Latrobe and the first meeting is on October 9 at 6:30 PM. Please join us on Monday, October 24, 2016, at 6:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria for a talk by Dr. Michael Krom, Ph.D. An Evening with Immaculee Ilibagzia: A story of mercy Immaculee Ilibagiza is a Rwandan author and motivational speaker. She is also a Roman Catholic and Tutsi. Her first book, Live to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust, is an autobiographical work detailing how she survived the Rwandan Genocide. Come hear her story of mercy on Wednesday, October 26 at 7:00 P.M. at the Seton Hill Performing Arts Center in Greensburg. Admission is free, but you must reserve your seat.
