God bless all of our Grandparents! We gather today as the blind person who does not see the suffering in our world. We are the deaf person who does not hear the cries of the poor and the mute who fails to speak up against injustice. We come to Jesus for healing so we may speak out against people and systems that oppress and silence the voices of the least among us. FIRST READING: The prophet s message offers hope to a frightened people. God will come to save them. What marvelous healing will take place when God comes: the blind will see, the deaf will hear, the lame will leap, and the mute will sing! Nature will reflect God s coming, too, as life-giving waters will appear in deserts and grasslands, on dry ground and within burning sands. Praise the Lord, my soul! SECOND READING: Favoritism has no place in Christian assemblies. Our attention should go equally to the rich and the poor, for human distinctions matter not in God s community. In fact, James reminds his beloved brothers and sisters in faith, that God chose the poor to acquire the riches of faith and inherit God s Kingdom. When we are rich in faith, we keep God first in all things and realize that material things really don t matter and that it s more important to share with those who have less. Please remember St. Edward Parish in your will. GOSPEL: Jesus fulfills Isaiah s words and heals a deaf man with a speech impediment. In Jesus, the deaf hear and the mute speak! Jesus opens our lives to the gift of salvation he offers. Time after time, he astonishes us, like he did the crowds centuries ago. Will we proclaim him as they did? 3 NOTES FROM FATHER RICHARD: DAILY MASS AT ST. EDWARD For the time being, Mass on Tuesday and Thursday will be celebrated at 10:00 AM. Although this may not be the time people were used to, it seems better to try it then to cancel the daily Masses altogether. CONFESSIONS AT ST. EDWARD The time for Confessions has been moved to 5:30pm on Saturdays. MASSES ON HOLD FOR 2019 No more Mass intentions will be scheduled for 2019 until further notice. (The Mass book for 2018 is filled.) BENEDICTINES FROM ST. VINCENT ARCHABBEY Each year parishes are visited by members of religious communities, or mission dioceses. These visits are called annual mission appeals. the spokesperson explains the apostolic work they support in the missions and they ask for people to contribute to a second collection to help them with that work. St. Vincent Archabbey has maintained two overseas missions for well over fifty years. One is in Taiwan and the other is in Vinhedo, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Since I served for four years in Vinhedo, I have been assigned to give mission appeals in 5 parishes. I have already visited 2 of them. For the weekends of September 22/23, 29/30 and October 6/7, I will be on the road to preach about the missions. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it s a healthy sign that we re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criticizes the community that favors the rich and welldressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven. 5 CATECHETICAL SUNDAY - Next Sunday, September 16th the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday, and will focus on the theme "Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ". Those who the community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. WHO ARE THE CATECHISTS? They are our volunteer parishioners who share God s Word as Teachers and Aides in our Religious Education program; as Adult Advisors in our Youth Ministry program; as Sponsor Couples in Marriage Preparation; as a supporting presence for those coming into the church in our RCIA program; for those who present the Liturgy of the Word with children on Sunday mornings; and those assisting new parents as they prepare for the Sacrament of Baptism. All of these Catechists will be commissioned and blessed at the 9:00am Mass next Sunday. A parish social will follow in Edwardian Hall after Mass for all parishioners. FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION - All parents who have children in grades 1-5 attending public school are encouraged to register their children for Faith Formation Classes. The registration fee is $25 (per student) and must accompany the registration form when mailed to the Faith Formation office. (Those with financial difficulty are asked to see Cheryl Hall personally). Registration forms are available online at or by picking up a form in the church vestibule on the bulletin table. All forms are due this weekend so materials can be ordered. Please call Cheryl Hall with any question at FAITH FORMATION CLASSES FOR GRADES 1-5 Classes will be held every other Sunday beginning next Sunday, Catechetical Sunday, September 16th after the 9:00am Mass from 10:15am to 12:00 Noon. There are fourteen classes scheduled and attendance is necessary in order for children to be properly prepared to receive all of their sacraments. Attendance in class does not replace Mass attendance. Mass attendance is of paramount importance for children to attend with their parents weekly and on Holy Days of Obligation. MIDDLE YOUTH MINISTRY GRADES Students will meet twice a month on Monday evenings from 6:30 pm 8:00 pm beginning Monday, October 15th in the Church Hall. Registration fee is $25.00 per child. Jim was the leadership of the St. Edward Food Pantry for over 35 years here in our parish. Funeral Masses were celebrated on September 1st & 8th. May they rest in the peace of Christ.
