2 ST. EDWARD PARISH, A Pennsylvania Charitable Trust JANUARY 13, 2019 HERMINIE, PA THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD SAT: JANUARY 12 6:00pm Jean Lane (Family) SUN: JANUARY 13 9:00am For the Living & Deceased Members of St. Edward Parish - MON: JANUARY 14 TUE: JANUARY 15 10:00am Marylou Klus (B.R.) (Sisters, Eleanor & Georgean) WED: JANUARY 16 THU: JANUARY 17 10:00am AnnaMary Upholster (B.R.) (Kathy & Greg) FRI: JANUARY 18 SAT: JANUARY 19 6:00pm For the Living & Deceased Members of St. Edward Parish SUN: JANUARY 20-2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 9:00am Arthur Meneghini (B.R.) (Les & Karen) This Christmas season ends with a beginning we celebrate Jesus baptism and initiation into his ministry. The ancient promise of justice to Israel is fulfilled in him whose mission, empowered by the Spirit, will focus on peace and justice. Our baptism mirrors his as the beginning of what we are called to be and do. We are all empowered to be instruments of peace and justice and to invite others to join us. FIRST READING: We return to the prophet Isaiah and one of his best known prophecies. The prophet of whom he speaks is crying out in the desert, exhorting all to make ready for the Lord. This magnificent depiction of a passionate voice became the framework for understanding the role of John the Baptist in announcing Jesus as the Messiah of God. O bless the Lord, my soul. SECOND READING: The letter to Titus affirms that it is not through their merit that the followers of Jesus have been saved but by grace. This, along with training in right living (temperance, justice, devotion), empowers the community to await in blessed hope the second coming of Jesus. STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Offertory, December 16 $6, Offertory, December 23 $6, Offertory, December 30 $5, Offertory, January 6 $8, Christmas, December 25 $16, Children & Family Services $1, Immaculate Conception $1, Thank you for your generosity!! The Catholic Catechism states that Jesus immersion in the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to themselves to do God s will. In other words, as baptized Catholics there is only one gift that we need to give to Jesus the gift of ourselves. Surrender yourself to God, place your trust in Him and allow the Holy Spirit to work through you for the greater glory of God. As we begin the new year, let us focus on generosity, or returning God s gifts with increase, through the generous sharing of our time, talent and treasure. GOSPEL: John had clearly developed a following and many people were wondering if he, in fact, was the Messiah. John says no; his baptism is with water and one will come behind him who is more powerful. This account differs in significant ways from the account in Matthew. Note that there is no reference to John baptizing Jesus. Still we again see the presence of the Holy Spirit, and hear the affirmation by God the Father of his Son, affirming the Sonship spoken of in Luke s account of the Annunciation. OUR BOOK OF PRAYERS In our church vestibule is a book intended to receive and hold the prayers and intentions of any and all who come to pray in our church. The prayers may be written on any day at any time. The book is primarily intended for the living. Prayers can be those of need and also those of thanksgiving and praise. You may write your prayers, petitions and the names of those to be prayed for in our book of prayers.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins on January 18th and is an annual ecumenical celebration. Christians around the world are invited to pray for the unity of all Christians. In the Gospel of John, Christ prays for his disciples before going to the cross. He asks that his followers may all be one, as he and the Father are one, so that the world may believe and have life in his name (John 17). Christian unity is here made central to the very being of the church and to its mission and witness. Today, we live with divisions even as we yearn for the unity promised and commissioned by Christ. The long and often painful history of Christianity has sundered our churches for theological, liturgical, and political reasons. Many Christians now strive to heal these divisions, yet honor our diversity, through ecumenical dialogue, common action, and relationship-building. They also come together to pray for unity, joining Christ in his prayer to the Father. Thank you to the parishioners of St. Edward Given the busy schedule and the general chaos of the Holidays it is possible I missed a few people with my thank you notes. So I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their gifts, generosity, support and prayers throughout Even though I am a new comer here and have not yet been at the parish a full year, you have readily accepted and welcomed me. I am humbled and most grateful. I wish each of you and your families a Happy New Year filled with God s Grace and Blessings. God Bless, Deacon John Zombar FAREWELL RECEPTIONS FOR FATHER FRANK GAN Our former pastor, Father Frank will be returning to the Philippines on January 20th. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one mightier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descended and heaven s voice spoke to Jesus, You are my beloved Son. Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God s word.
