Faith is believing in something even though you may not be able to see it. Many people think that miracles don t happen anymore. But, if you focus on the positive, not the negative, focus on your blessings instead of your hardships, miracles will seem common and you will see God s active presence in your daily life. Faith is a leap into the unknown. It is a risk that requires trust in something beyond self. Each one of us entertains doubt on some occasion. We have moments when we feel abandoned, in exile or alone. Today s Gospel provides a model for what we are to do in times of lonely uncertainty: Take courage, reach out and call to Jesus. Ask for what you need. Speak what is in your heart. The Lord hears and wants to do great things for us. FIRST READING: Joy marks the return of a remnant a large throng from exile in the desert. The Lord has delivered his people. Their tears of departure contrast with the happiness upon their return. One point could not be clearer: the Lord has always been and will always be the Father of Israel. The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy. SECOND READING: Jesus Christ is the Son of the Father from whom his high priesthood comes. The Father glorifies Christ and makes him a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. Christ deals patiently with our sins because he shares in the fullness of our humanity. He offers himself for our sins because he also shares in the fullness of divinity. GOSPEL: Despite the rebuke of many, the blind beggar, Bartimaeus, would not stop calling out to Jesus for pity. Jesus does not ignore his cries, but rather calls him near and asks him what he desires. Jesus heals the blind man, noting that his faith saved him. Bartimaeus responds to his newly-gained sight by following Jesus. ST. EDWARD JANUARY CALENDAR TICKET A New Year Cash Special Calendar Ticket for January, 2019 will be sold again this year to benefit the parish. Cash prizes of $5,000 will be awarded. Tickets are $10 each. Only 1,000 tickets sold. A $100 prize this year to the seller of the January 31st ticket. You can reserve your favorite numbers now before November 4th by filling out the form enclosed in the bulletin or by calling Lisa in the Faith Formation office on Mondays and Wednesdays mornings at SELLERS ARE NEEDED to help us with this fundraiser. 3 CALL TO ORDERS FOR JOHN ZOMBAR QUEEN OF ANGELS LOTTERY CALENDARS - Parents from Queen of Angels Catholic School will be selling their 2019 lottery calendars in the church vestibule this weekend after Masses. The calendars are $25 each with 365 chances to win! The three-digit daily number of the PA Lottery at 7pm will determine the winner for each day. These make wonderful gifts for the holiday season! GRADES 6-8 FAITH FORMATION CLASS - Class will be held on Monday, October 29th for our parish students in grades 6-8 in the church hall. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY - Continues on Wednesday, October 31st from 12:30 2:30pm in the parish meeting room. If you love to knit or crochet, you are more than welcome to attend! Bring your supplies with you. CHOIR REHEARSAL - Will be held this week on Thursday, November 1st following the All Saints Day Mass. New members are welcome! RESPECT LIFE MONTH - As we pray this month of October for a greater respect for all human life, special inserts from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops will be inserted in the bulletin. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord s kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God s love and care for us. Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves (Psalm 126:5 6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great banquet of God. Today on Priesthood Sunday, we ask God to bless all priests who faithfully build up the body of Christ, and we pray for our Bishop Malesic and all priests of our Diocese, for their dedication, leadership, service, and inspiration.

5 ALL SAINTS DAY On Thursday, November 1st we celebrate the solemnity of All Saints, a Holy Day of obligation, remembering all the saints known and unknown to us who enjoy the glory of heaven. The Gospel we will hear is the Beatitudes, which are guidelines for true joy and the attainment of Sanctity in our Christian lives. We will hear how to live lives of holiness so that we may attain happiness in the next life as we strive to likewise be numbered among all the saints in heaven. Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, November 1st at 10:00am & 7:00pm as we ask God for forgiveness and strength that we might be His living Saints here on earth. We remind Catholics of their obligation to attend Mass on this day. ALL SOULS DAY The commemoration of the faithfully departed is celebrated by the church on November 2. Prayer for the dead reaches deep into our human history, and it has been our custom from the earliest days of the Church. The belief that our prayers can be of assistance to the dead is a treasured tenet of our Catholic faith. We profess it every time we recite the Nicene Creed: I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. On All Souls Day, Friday, November 2nd at a special 7:00pm Mass, we will remember the deceased of our parish family who died from November, 2017 October, A list of all those who have died this past year and were buried from our parish can be found in the bulletin today on a separate flier. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. FEAST OF ALL SOULS REMEMBRANCES - Additional fliers are available on the bulletin table for your deceased loved ones intentions. Remembrances will remain in the church during the month of November and will be remembered in special way during the Prayers of the Faithful. In His life we are reborn, Through His victory we are made whole, And because of His eternal promise, Life has no end. YOUTH MINISTRY HOMEMADE NUT ROLL SALE BISHOP MALESIC INVITES YOU TO JOIN HIM FOR A LISTENING SESSION Bishop Malesic invites every member of the Diocese to join him as he presents gatherings throughout the Diocese concerning the PA Grand Jury Report and the events of the past months which have evoked a great deal of pain, sadness, confusion and uncertainty for the faithful of the Diocese. Bishop Malesic will listen to your concerns and to respond to your questions. These sessions will give you the opportunity to express your feelings, observations and suggestions. Session in our area: Afternoon Session: 1:30 3:30pm at Holy Family Church in West Newton on Wednesday, October 31st. The schedule of evening sessions can be found in The Catholic Accent or on the diocesan website, NEWS FROM CHERYL HALL Coordinator of Catechesis Faith Formation News grades 1 to 5 Classes resume this week. Please be sure your child is attending Mass each week. We are having a Thanksgiving food drive for our parish and are encouraging our Faith Formation students to bring non-perishable food items to their next class on Sunday, November 11. Thank you for your help! Middle Youth Ministry grades 6 to 8 Will be meeting on Monday, October 29 in Edwardian Hall from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Their next scheduled meeting is the following Monday, November 5 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. There will be a meeting for the eighth grade Confirmation parents on Monday, November 5 in the meeting room in Edwardian Hall at 6:45 pm. Attention Youth in grades 8 to 12 NCYC (National Catholic Youth Conference) will be held from November 20-23, 2019 in Indianapolis, Indiana. This conference is held every two years and is an educational, prayerful, safe and interesting trip for all those who attend. This conference attracts over 20,000 Catholic teenagers across the country! Some of the activities include a trip to Dave and Buster s, nationally recognized speakers, powerful prayer experiences, Christian musicians and an interactive park to hang out with 20,000 + of your closest friends! Most students who attend once, want to return a second time! Please contact Cheryl if you are interested in receiving more information about this exciting trip! Ask to see the cool hats she traded for there! The Youth Ministry students are selling Apricot, Nut & Poppyseed Rolls for the Thanksgiving holiday season. They are in length and can be frozen up to 6 months. The cost is $10.00 each and delivery is November 17th at Noon in Edwardian Hall.
