How many times have you heard someone make a disparaging comment about Jesus or our Catholic faith? How did you react? Do you remain quiet not to cause a disturbance? Or, do you remain quiet because you believe people will think negatively about you? Pray for the courage to speak up and enter into a respectful dialogue when the opportunity arises. It is the ultimate drama of life and death. The Lord of Life meets the Prince of Darkness on a cross on Calvary. With every turn of events, a new element is added to the battle: betrayal by a friend, abandonment by followers, ridicule, abuse, pain, suffering, and great sorrow. Sin launches every weapon in its arsenal, and the outcome hangs in the balance. So then, why did Jesus have to die? Was it to satisfy God s sense of justice? Doesn t sin triumph in the death of Jesus? Couldn t we be saved another way? As we enter into Holy Week, we set our feet onto the path, following the Lord in His passion and death. As we walk beside Him, how can we ignore the suffering Jesus bore for us. As we begin to intimately understand His sorrows, they will spring forth in compassion for our brothers and sisters. This Palm Sunday begins a seven day journey that will transform us by the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus into joyous celebrants of Easter. Let us not rush down the path this week. Let each day be a step that brings us more in conformity with Jesus and His suffering. Only then can we truly know the miracle of Easter morning. Holy Week Offerings - Special envelopes are provided in your monthly packet for the Holy Thursday collection for the poor and needy, the Good Friday collection for the support of the services and facilities of the Church in the Holy Land, and your special Easter gift to the church. In celebrating these special events of Holy Week, your material resources are needed to bring Good News of the Resurrection to our parish family and our communities. Adult Lenten Folders and Rice Bowls - These may be returned during the Holy Triduum. Boxes are available on the bulletin table in the church vestibule. Day of Fast and Abstinence - Is to be observed on Good Friday. The obligation of abstinence begins with age 14, while the obligation of fasting begins with age 18 and extends to age 59. Blessing of Easter Food - It is an ancient tradition in many Catholic cultures that the food used for the Easter meals are brought to the church on Holy Saturday to be blessed. While the baskets traditionally contain meat, eggs, butter, cheese, horseradish, breads and wine, it is appropriate to bring any food item which will be used for the Easter meal. We invite you to bring your Easter Food Baskets to church on Holy Saturday morning at 11:00am for a blessing. Easter Flower Donations - The flowers that will decorate our church from the Easter Vigil until Pentecost will be a visible reminder of the Risen Lord and our desire for our deceased loved ones to share in the power of Christ s Resurrection. Additional envelopes are available on the bulletin table. Chrism Mass - Bishop Edward Malesic invites all the faithful of the Diocese to attend the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Greensburg at 10:00am. This year, we hear the Passion from the Gospel of Luke. These readings for Palm Sunday and the Passion used to be read on successive Sundays. Now they are combined into a single feast, so that we may see the whole sweep of the glory and the suffering played out. Jesus accepts the adulation of the crowd, the foreshadowing of his glory in the Resurrection. He bids farewell to his disciples in his last Passover, and forgives his tormentors as he dies on the cross. Later this week, we enter the Holy Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, when the whole story of our redemption will play out once again. 5 THE SACRED TRIDUUM, or Three Days, is the most solemn event of the Christian year. Beginning on the evening of Holy Thursday we commemorate the Last Supper and Christ s passion and approaching crucifixion. Good Friday is a solemn time in which we remember Christ s suffering and death on the cross. On Holy Saturday we celebrate the Easter Vigil and anticipate Christ s triumphant rising from the dead. The Sacred Triduum is the peak and climax of the liturgical year. HOLY THURSDAY MASS OF THE LORD S SUPPER beginning at 7:00 PM celebrates the institution of the Holy Eucharist. It is embroidered by several special rites; the reading of the mandatum (Jesus command to serve others as he has served), the Washing of the Feet, communion under both forms, and a procession with the Blessed Sacrament from the main tabernacle to an altar of repose. Adoration during the late evening hours until 11:00 PM. Everyone is asked to please leave the church in reverent silence. HOLY THURSDAY ADORATION HOURS will begin at 8:00pm until 11:00pm in the church. Groups and families are invited to visit the Altar of Repose and adore the Blessed Sacrament. Suggested hours for parish organizations are: (8-9pm) Altar Rosary Society, Choir, Masters of Ceremony, Altar Servers, Youth Ministry; (9-10pm) Finance Council, Ushers, Pastoral Council, Prayer Shawl Ministry; (10-11pm) St. Vincent de Paul, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Home Ministers, Lector s. Please try to attend during your allotted times so there is always someone in the church with the Blessed Sacrament. GOOD FRIDAY LITURGY will begin at 1:00 PM as we gather in silence to read Scripture and offer prayers for the whole world. The Church does not celebrate Mass on Good Friday, a reminder of the absence of Christ in death. The Veneration of the Cross takes place not simply to mourn Jesus suffering and death but to acknowledge that through the cross of Jesus we are led to glory. Communion will be distributed. Everyone is asked to please leave Holy Family Church in reverent silence. GOOD FRIDAY STATIONS OF THE CROSS will take place at 7:00 PM with Deacon John as we commemorate Jesus Christ s last day on Earth as a man. HOLY SATURDAY VIGIL MASS will begin at 9:00 PM. The new fire is blessed and candles glow in the celebration of Christ as our light. Salvation history is proclaimed through Scriptures, climaxing in the joyous proclamation that Christ has risen. Our Candidate, Tyler Livingston, who has been prepared, will enter the Church, and all Catholics renew their baptismal promises, for this night commemorates our share in the dying and rising of Jesus. WINE AND CHEESE SOCIAL will follow immediately after the Holy Vigil Mass in Edwardian Hall hosted by the RCIA Team. EASTER SUNDAY MASSES will be celebrated at 9:00 AM and 11:30 AM. Easter morning marks both the final hours of the Triduum and the beginning of a 50-day celebration period in the Church calendar. EASTER LITURGICAL MUSIC - Under the direction of Mrs. Robin Stahl, our Director of Music Ministry, our Parish Choir will be singing for the Easter Vigil Mass at 9:00 PM and the Easter Sunday Mass at 9:00 AM.
